2017 US Open Cup Round 2: North Carolina FC dominate Carolina Dynamo in first trip to Greensboro

The last time these two teams met, former UNC-Greensboro standout and Montreal Impact draftee Hakan Ilhan put a scare into the then-RailHawks before the NASL team pulled away at the end. This game between the Carolina Dynamo and North Carolina FC was not that close, as NCFC hammered the Dynamo 6-1 in North Carolina’s first-ever trip to MacPherson Stadium in Brown’s Summit, North Carolina.

2017 US Open Cup Round 1: Carolina Dynamo return to Round 2 for second time in a decade

Things you should know about the Third Round of the US Open Cup

Since the expanded format in 1997, a PDL team has failed to reach the third round only four times (1998, 2002, 2007, 2008). The recent struggles can be attributed to the fact that in 2007, the format was changed so that all non-MLS teams began the tournament in the first round, unlike previous tournaments where PDL teams were matched up with USASA or other PDL clubs.

On Wednesday night in Charlotte, NC, USL PRO’s Charlotte Eagles defeated Greensboro’s PDL side Carolina Dynamo 3-1 in the Second Round of the 2014 US Open Cup, thanks to two goals and one assist from Colombian forward Jorge Herrera.

2013 US Open Cup Second Round: RailHawks down Dynamo 3-1 in Carolina Clash

Though the visiting Carolina Dynamo of the PDL made things difficult and tense at times, the NASL Carolina RailHawks came away with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night, securing a Wednesday, May 29 home date with the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup.

The spirit of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was splendiferous at Macpherson Stadium in Browns Summit, N.C. as the Carolina Dynamo defeated the NPSL’s Chattanooga FC 4-1 in a PK shootout after a 4-4 draw to advance to the second round of the 100th edition of the tournament.

2012 US Open Cup First Round: Aegean Hawks top Carolina Dynamo to earn first Open Cup win

The Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks of the U.S. Adult Soccer Association defeated the Premier Development League’s Carolina Dynamo 3-1 Tuesday night in the U.S. Open Cup First Round at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, Md. Two goals by former Georgetown Hoya forward Scott Larrabee led the Hawks to the club’s first ever appearance in the Open Cup’s Second Round and a home match against the Richmond Kickers of the third division USL Pro.
