While the Richmond Kickers held their own for much of the game, it was a barrage of Charlotte FC goals early in the second half that dashed their hopes of an MLS upset.

Dave Sarachan, who has the highest win percentage of any coach of the Modern Era,  is now the manager of North Carolina FC, and in Round 2 he earned his first Open Cup victory in Cary, leading the Hawks to a 4-1 win over USL League One side Richmond Kickers.

The 1995 US Open Cup champions Richmond Kickers, a professional side from USL League One started off the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 6-2 victory against amateur side Virginia United.
