This year’s Semifinal marks just the 10th time in the US Open Cup’s 106-year history that all four remaining teams have never lifted the trophy.

With the kickoff temperature sitting at 90 degrees and the Seattle Sounders debuting a new home for their Open Cup games, the leadup to Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt US Open Cup game against the Portland Timbers didn’t feel like your typical rainy Cascadia Derby.
Since the expanded format in 1997, a PDL team has failed to reach the third round only four times (1998, 2002, 2007, 2008). The recent struggles can be attributed to the fact that in 2007, the format was changed so that all non-MLS teams began the tournament in the first round, unlike previous tournaments where PDL teams were matched up with USASA or other PDL clubs.

The Seattle Sounders are on their way to their fifth U.S. Open Cup Final in the last six years – and they couldn’t have gotten there in a more emphatic fashion.
Seattle has run its Open Cup winning streak over its archrivals to four straight (3-1-1, 1-0 in PKs), with its only loss coming in 2005.
In front of a standing-room-only crowd, the Sounders swept aside amateur club PSA Elite 5-0 to reach the fifth round of the tournament. Kenny Cooper scored a pair of goals, Brad Evans and Cam Weaver added first-half tallies and Sean Okoli chipped in with a fifth late in the match.
To date, the Open Cup has only had a Fourth Round six times (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2012, 2013).

In an open vote that saw six different players names selected on ballots for the TheCup.us Player of the Tournament, it was five-time finalist Osvaldo Alonso of the Seattle Sounders that received the honor while Cal FC’s Danny Barrera was an overwhelming choice as TheCup.us Lower Division Player of the Tournament as well as runner-up behind Alonso.
