In its first ever U.S. Open Cup match, Capistrano FC enjoyed a veteran-like second half to come-from-behind and advance to the second round of America’s oldest soccer tournament.

Javier Castro and Norberto Ochoa scored goals in the opening 20 minutes and Jose Mirada saved a late penalty kick as the two-year-old United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) club hung on to advance to a Second Round trip to face the United Soccer League’s Oklahoma City Energy.
At least five teams either fielded an ineligible player or had one on their gameday roster during the first or second rounds of the tournament. However, only two of the teams were discovered in time to file a protest.
“We are embarrassed by the situation,” said Ascencio. “We registered our players and they all came back cleared. That is why we played .”
According to LA Wolves head coach Yan Skwara, the Fusion fielded a player that was already cup-tied to another club.

It wasn’t until, after 120 minutes and 16 penalty kicks, when Edgar Espinoza couldn’t answer Matt Sheldon’s spot kick in the third round of sudden death, that the Fusion survived 6-5 on PKs after a 3-3 draw.
