2020 US Open Cup Qualifying Win & You’re In: Flooding aids NY Pancyprian Freedoms’ return to USOC

Heavy rain and flooding brought an early end to the 2020 US Open Cup qualifier between the New York Pancyprian Freedoms and Brockton FC United. The Freedoms punched their ticket to the 107th edition of the tournament since they were leading 1-0 when the game was halted.

The New York Pancyprian Freedoms traveled down to New Jersey and pushed the Jackson Lions FC to its limits during regulation, but with a 0-0 scoreline after 120 minutes the visitors needed a penalty shootout to advance.

Two of the titans of the famed Cosmopolitan Soccer League in New York City battled for 120 minutes and neither could find a goal. The match had to be decided in penalty kicks with the reigning Amatuer Cup champion Lansdowne Bhoys edging three-time US Open Cup champion New York Pancyprian Freedoms, 4-3.

The Freedoms, who won the US Open Cup three times in the 1980s, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the Garden State’s last representative. Former New York Red Bulls and Long Island Rough Riders player Chris Megaloudis scored the game-winner just before halftime to bring the Freedoms one step closer to qualifying for the first time since 2011.

The four-time champion New York Greek American SC hosted three-time champion New York Pancyprian Freedoms at the historic Metropolitan Oval in what is one of the longest-running rivalries in American soccer.
