For the fifth year in a row, Major League Soccer will conduct a play-in tournament to narrow the number of teams that enter the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Beginning on June 28, eight MLS clubs will join the 98th edition of the tournament in the third round, with the top six MLS teams based on the 2010 league standings automatically qualifying. The 10 remaining US-based clubs are left to fight for the last two spots.

After a US Open Cup hiatus that saw the Columbus Crew missing from the tournament for the last two years, the Crew have returned to the championship game with a 2-1 extra time victory over DC United in the semifinals. They are back for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2002.
2010 US Open Cup Quarterfinal: DC United downs Harrisburg 2-0, continues home dominance
DC United struck early in both halves, then held on to defeat the Harrisburg City Islanders for the second year in a row in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals, this time by a 2-0 tally. Branko Boskovic struck in the first minute, and Thabiso Khumalo doubled the lead at 47′.
2010 US Open Cup Third Round: DC United hold off Richmond 2-0
A ten minute spurt to begin the second half was all DC United needed to defeat the Richmond Kickers of USL-2 2-0 in the Third Round of the US Open Cup. Jamie Moreno got the ball past Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascal at 47′, and Santino Quaranta followed suit at 56′.

Major League Soccer will add to their list of Lamar Hunt US Open Cup entries on June 2 when DC United hosts Real Salt Lake at RFK Stadium. DC, the 2008 Open Cup champions who have played 11 straight Cup-related games at home, will bring in the defending MLS Cup champions, who are trying to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2006.

Josh Wicks of DC United receives five game US Open Cup ban
A little over a month after he stomped on Fredy Montero of the Seattle Sounders in the US Open Cup Final, DC United goalkeeper Josh Wicks has received a five-match tournament suspension.
