2011 Gold Cup & US Open Cup: The Overlap
Beyond the obvious fact that the first two rounds of the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup occur during the current edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup that kicked off Sunday, there is some extended overlap with players. The overlap will come when the Major League Soccer teams enter the competition in the Third Round, set for June 28 – three days after the Gold Cup Final.

Six clubs representing five states met at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee this weekend for the National Premier Soccer League’s Southeast Division tournament for one of the league’s four Lamar Hunt US Open Cup berths. When the dust settled, it was the host team, Chattanooga FC, who qualified for the Open Cup for the first time.
2011 US Open Cup Qualifying: Brooklyn Italians defeat FC Sonic Lehigh Valley 2-1 for NPSL Northeast berth
The third of four 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup berths allotted to the National Premier Soccer League will be determined Friday night at Lehigh University’s Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania when the Brooklyn Italians visit FC Sonic Lehigh Valley at 7:30 pm ET.
2011 US Open Cup Qualifying: ASC New Stars & Regals FC claim berths at USASA Region III tournament
The draw for the USASA Region III Open Men’s tournament to be held in recently tornado-ravaged Tuscaloosa, Alabama May 27-30 that will also determine the region’s two Lamar Hunt US Open Cup berths was held at the University of Alabama Recreational Center Thursday evening. The draw set the stage for the next four days of competition, which kicks off Friday morning at 10:00 am ET.
2011 US Open Cup qualifying (Win & You’re In): Sporting KC qualify with drubbing of 2nd string New England
In the pouring rain, Sporting Kansas City became the eighth and final MLS entry into the 2011 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup after thrashing the New England Revolution, 5-0. Chance Myers and CJ Sapong each scored two in the most lop-sided MLS qualifier ever.
2011 US Open Cup qualifying: Chicago Fire rally, beat Earthquakes in PKs to keep Open Cup streak alive
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, it looked as though the Chicago Fire were going to miss the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the first time in team history, but a pair of second half goals and a San Jose shot off the crossbar in sudden death penalties kept the perfect appearance record intact. The rally by the visitors dashed the Earthquakes’ hopes of returning for the first time since 2005.

In two very contrasting USASA Region I semifinal matches, the three-time US Open Cup champion New York Pancyprian Freedoms qualified for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the fifth time in the Pro Era with a dramatic 4-2 victory against Mass Premier Soccer while Phoenix SC of Philadelphia shutout Go Soccer FC 3-0 to advance to the tournament for the first time. Both clubs won on the road.
