2018 US Open Cup Round 5: Chicago Fire disappoint Atlanta United’s largest crowd in tournament history

After a Fourth Round match against the Columbus Crew that ended in a wild penalty shootout, the Chicago Fire needed just one goal and 90 minutes to continue its 2018 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup run.

Nemanja Nikolic’s 54th minute goal – his third goal of the competition – was enough to lead the Fire past Atlanta United 1-0 in front of an announced crowd of 41,012. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a US Open Cup game in the 105-year history of the tournament. It shattered the previous mark of 35,615 set in the 2011 Final when the Seattle Sounders hosted the Fire at CenturyLink Field.

For the Fire, they clinch a spot in the Quarterfinals for the 14th time in club history , which ranks third-most in tournament history. They will host their next game in the tournament on July 18 when they take on Louisville City FC (USL).

Atlanta United held the better of the play over the first half of the match, relying on strong possession and the play of Tito Villalba on the right wing – with that said, they failed to make the most of their chances and petered out a little as time went on. Chicago nearly made it 1-0 on the 16th minute off of a corner that was nearly touched home by Bastain Schweinsteiger, but barely kept from going over the line by Alec Kann.

Atlanta’s best chance came in the 33rd minute, as a beautiful run and curling shot by Villalba was stopped by Fire keeper Richard Sanchez.

atlanta-united-all-time-attendance-record-2018-us-open-cup-2000But poor defending on Atlanta’s part saw the Fire strike first in the 54th minute. Luis Solignac was afforded too much time to pass the ball to Nikolic, who calmly pegged it past Alec Kann for his team-leading ninth goal across all competitions. From there, Atlanta’s attempts to level the match and force extra time fell short as it lost in the Round of 16 for the second straight year.

“We spoke before the game that we wanted to keep the ball and create space,” said Nikolic. “It was great action from the whole team, from behind and in the finishing from (Aleksandar) Katai, (Schweinsteiger), and of course who made that final pass. For me, it was like he scored – it was an amazing pass from him.”

The Fire don’t continue in the competition until July 18 when they host USL side Louisville City in the quarterfinals, but they’ll hope to use this win to make a run toward getting back to playoff position in MLS, starting with an away match at Seattle on Saturday. They currently sit in seventh in the Eastern Conference, level with Orlando City in points with 19 but with five wins to Orlando’s six.

After winning in a stadium where Atlanta United have generally enjoyed an advantage, and in front of a USOC record crowd, Fire coach Veljko Paunovic hopes that it can give his team an extra push, both in the Open Cup and in MLS play.

“We achieved something that not many teams have done here – winning at this beautiful venue,” he said. “For our club, the tradition for fighting for the Open Cup means a lot, and getting this win today…I believe we are slowly getting to the point to play the way we played last year.”

DC United vs. Orlando City SC - 2018 US Open CupOrlando City SC (MLS) at D.C. United (MLS)
LIVE VIDEO (Kickoff: 7 p.m. ET)

It is an island of misfit toys melee on Wednesday as the team without a stadium (D.C. United) takes on the team without a coach (Orlando City SC) in the Round of 16. The winner of this game will play at the Philadelphia Union in the Quarterfinals on July 18.HOW THEY GOT HERE / RECENT FORMThese are interesting times for the two Major League Soccer sides. D.C. United (2-6-4, 10 points) are still three weeks away from the opening of their brand new stadium, Audi Field, and will thus be hosting Wednesday’s encounter at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. The venue has served them just fine so far in this tournament as they defeated North Carolina FC 4-3 on penalties in the previous round.

In league play, D.C. are coming off of a wild 4-4 draw with Toronto FC. Although they sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings their form has improved, and they’ve gotten points in three of their last five matches (1-2-2, 5 points).

As for Orlando City SC it has been an interesting week. On Friday, while most of the soccer-watching world was paying attention to Spain and Portugal or having a pint with friends at Providence Park or Children’s Mercy Park, Orlando City SC were firing their manager. The club announced that they would be letting go of Jason Kreis after the club lost their sixth consecutive match a few days ago. Although they did defeat NPSL side Miami United in the previous round of the Open Cup the club has struggled to find any real measure of consistency this season.

There have been some rumblings that the recently-retired former World Player of the Year Kaka (ESPN reports he is not being considered) and Brazilian coaching legend Carlos Alberto Perreira taking over, but odds are none of this will happen before Wednesday night. In the meantime, assistant coach Bobby Murphy will be taking over in the meantime. He already has some experience in this type of a situation, having served as the interim manager after Adrian Heath was fired in 2016.

PAST MEETING

On the pitch the two sides should be very well acquainted with one another having already drawn 1-1 in the first game of the year for both squads. United’s goal came from Yamil Asad in the 32nd minute and despite Orlando receiving a first half red card, Stefano Pinho would score a stoppage time equalizer in his Orlando City debut after emerging as one of the breakout stars from the 2017 US Open Cup (with the NASL’s Miami FC).

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Asad is United’s second-leading scorer with five goals behind Jamaican international Darren Mattocks (7), who joined the team in the offseason from the Portland Timbers. Mattocks’ seven goals ranks fifth in Major League Soccer.

For Orlando City, Pinho made a name for himself last year as a member of Miami FC. He tied for the US Open Cup lead with four goals as he helped Miami reach the Quarterfinals. The club’s leading scorer is veteran Dom Dwyer with seven goals with nine league games. Unfortunately for the Lions, Dwyer is recovering from an injury and has missed the last few games. It’s unclear if he will pay against United. One player who will definitely not play for Orlando is playmaker Yoshimar Yotun who leads the team in assists with five. Yotun is representing Peru at the FIFA World Cup.

Overall: 15-9-1 (1-0 PK) | As MLS: 3-3-1 (1-0 PK)
Away: 5-6-1 (1-0) | As MLS: 2-1-1 (1-0)
vs. MLS: 3-7-0 | As MLS: 1-1-0
Best finish: Quarterfinals (2013, 2015)

D.C. United has won three US Open Cup titles (1996, 2008, 2013) and come into tonight’s match riding a five-game home unbeaten streak. The club has played all of its Open Cup home games at the Soccerplex since hosting a Semifinal match in 2010 at RFK Stadium. It is no surprise that with three Open Cup titles in their trophy case, United is one of the winningest teams in the tournament. D.C.’s 32 wins are the fifth-most in the Modern Era (1995-present).

Orlando’s Open Cup history dates back to 2009 when the club began as the Austin Aztex in the United Soccer League. The Lions have reached the Quarterfinals twice (once in 2013 when they were a USL Pro club and in 2015 in their first season in MLS), and they are one win away from reaching the round of eight for the third time.

The club’s best tournament run was in 2013 when, as a USL Pro team, they upset a pair of MLS teams, headlined by a 1-0 road win over the defending champion Sporting Kansas City. The win was made even more special because Orlando was the USL affiliate of Sporting. What’s more, four of the Lions’ key players (including Dom Dwyer) were on loan from Kansas City which forbid them as the parent club from playing against them in the tournament. Even without those players, Orlando pulled off the upset.

Screen Shot 2018-06-18 at 9.26.49 AMNashville SC (USL) at Louisville City FC (USL)
LIVE VIDEO (Kickoff: 7 p.m. ET)

The only all-USL matchup of the Round of 16 means that there will be a lower division team in the Quarterfinals regardless of who wins the game. It will be a tough task for whoever advances as the winner will play on the road against the winner of the Atlanta United-Chicago Fire game on July 18.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

In their inaugural trip to the US Open Cup, Nashville SC finds themselves one win away from the round of eight after three straight home wins. They began their Cup run in Round 2 where they defeated Inter Nashville FC (NPSL) 2-0, followed by a 3-1 win over the PDL’s Mississippi Brilla, 3-1. After back-to-back wins over amateur sides, they met the Colorado Rapids of MLS in the Fourth Round and had no trouble advancing. Nashville not only kept Colorado off the scoresheet, but they held them to just two shots. Neither shot forced a save from veteran goalkeeper Matt Pickens.

Just like Nashville, Louisville City reached the Round of 16 by winning three games in front of their home fans. They began with a 5-0 win over the PDL’s Long Island Rough Riders, followed by a 1-0 win over fellow USL club Saint Louis FC. In the Fourth Round, they picked up a dramatic 3-2 win over the New England Revolution thanks to a stunning goal from Brian Ownby. The former University of Virginia star also assisted on another goal and his overall performance earned him TheCup.us Player of the Round honors.

PAST MEETINGS

This will be the third meeting of the season between the two clubs with the first two league games being won by the home team. Louisville won the season opener 2-0 back on March 17 and Nashville won the game in the Music City on May 13 by the same scoreline.

RECENT FORM / PLAYERS TO WATCH

Nashville’s first-year success in the USL is due, in large part, to their defense. They have only allowed eight goals in their first 13 games, with Matt Pickens leading the way in goal with a league-leading seven clean sheets. Only one team in the league has fewer goals allowed than Nashville (Pittsburgh Riverhounds with seven) Nashville is 6-2-5 in league play and is currently in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, however, don’t let that seven-point gap between them and first-place FC Cincinnati fool you. Nashville has played two fewer games than Cincinnati. Nashville is riding an eight-game unbeaten streak (4-0-4) in USL play. They haven’t lost a game in any competition since April 14.

Defending USL champion Louisville City FC’s title defense is off to a positive start with a 7-2-3 record in league play. They are currently tied for second place in the Eastern Conference, six points behind first-place FC Cincinnati. Just like Nashville, though, they also have played fewer games than FC Cincy. Three fewer games, in fact. They have yet to lose a home game in all competitions with an 8-0-1 record. Cameron Lancaster has been a big part of the team’s success, scoring six goals in nine matches so far this season. Lancaster also has two goals in Open Cup play, including a game-tying goal against the New England Revolution.

US OPEN CUP HISTORY

Louisville City FC (USL)
5th US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 6-3-1 (1-0 PK)
Home: 3-0-1 (1-0 PK)
vs. Div. 2: 2-2-0
Best finish: Fourth Round (2015)

Nashville SC (USL)
1st US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 3-0-0
Away: 0-0-0
vs. Div. 2: 0-0-0
Best finish: First appearance

Nashville, in its inaugural season in the USL, is trying to make Tennessee soccer history. Only one Tennessee-based club in the last 105 years has reached the Quarterfinals. Back in 1998, the Nashville Metros of the USL’s A-League (Div. 2 pro) upset the Kansas City Wizards (Sporting KC) 3-1 at the Colombia Soccer Stadium Complex in Nashville to become the first Tennessee team to reach the round of eight.

Louisville City is making the club’s fifth appearance in the tournament and could also make some state history with a win over Nashville. A Kentucky team has never reached the Quarterfinals and Louisville City would be the first. History is on their side as they are undefeated at home in tournament play with a 3-0-1 (1-0 PK) record.

Screen Shot 2018-06-18 at 9.26.43 AMChicago Fire (MLS) at Atlanta United FC (MLS)
LIVE VIDEO (Kickoff: 7:30 p.m. ET)

Atlanta United will look to do what it could not do in 2017: advance to the round of 8 in the U.S. Open Cup. They can do that with a win against fellow MLS side Chicago Fire at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night. The winner will host a USL team — either Nashville SC or Louisville City FC — in the Quarterfinals on July 18. A record-breaking crowd is expected in Atlanta that will not only shatter the Fifth Round / Round of 16 attendance record but may challenge the tournament’s all-time attendance record of 35,615 set at CenturyLink Field when the Seattle Sounders hosted the Chicago Fire in the 2011 US Open Cup Final.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

Chicago drew the Columbus Crew 2-2 in the clubs’ Fourth Round match on June 6 at MAPFRE Stadium, advancing to the Round of 16 with a 10-9 win in a penalty shootout. With things knotted at nine a piece, both goalkeepers took their turn in the eleventh round shootout. Fire keeper Richard Sanchez scored the eventual winner before stopping Columbus’s Logan Ketterer to see his team through to the next round.

Atlanta had a simpler time with the USL’s Charleston Battery in Kennesaw, Ga., opening its tournament run with a 3-0 victory. Andrew Carleton’s booming strike in the 14th minute started the scoring, while Ezequiel Barco (47th min.) and Romario Williams (65th min.) provided insurance for the home side.

PAST MEETINGS

The two teams have already grown familiar with each other this year. They met in MLS play on May 5 in Bridgeview, Ill., a 2-1 win for Atlanta. That gave Atlanta a 2-1-0 edge in the series. Last year, Atlanta beat Chicago 4-0 at Bobby Dodd Stadium on March 18, 2017 – the club’s third game in its brief history – before being shut out in Bridgeview 2-0 less than three months later.

RECENT FORM / TEAM LEADERS

Atlanta are led by Josef Martinez, whose 14 goals lead MLS. Miguel Almiron’s seven assists are best on the team and tied for third in the league. Their play has helped Atlanta to the top of both the Eastern Conference and Supporters’ Shield tables with 33 points.

Meanwhile, Chicago are tied with Orlando City SC with 19 points, but are seventh in the conference standings by virtue of five wins to Orlando’s six. Nemanja Nikolic leads the team with eight goals across all competitions.

US OPEN CUP HISTORY

Chicago Fire (MLS)
21st US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 40-14-6 (4-2 PK)
Away: 14-13-3 (2-1 PK)
vs. MLS: 21-9-2 (2-0 PK)
Best finish: 1998, 2000, 2003, 2006 champions

Atlanta United FC (MLS)
2nd US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 2-1-0
Home: 2-0-0
vs. MLS: 0-0-0
Best finish: Fifth Round (2017)

The Chicago Fire are the most successful MLS team in US Open Cup history. They are one of eight clubs in the history of the 105-year history of the US Open Cup to win four tournament championships (1998, 2000, 2003, 2006), but they have not lifted the trophy since 2006. No team in the history of the tournament has more Semifinals appearances (12) than the Fire, and only two teams (Kutis SC, FC Dallas) have more Quarterfinal appearances than Chicago’s 13. They are also the only club in the history of the tournament to reach four consecutive Semifinals twice (2003-06, 2013-16).

Atlanta is only in the club’s second year and has eliminated the Charleston Battery (USL) in their opening round match in each year. Last year, they fell 3-2 on the road against Miami FC (NASL). The state of Georgia hasn’t had a lot of success in the US Open Cup over the last century. The inaugural US Open Cup launched in 1913 and no Georgia-based club has ever won the tournament or even reached the championship game. In fact, only two Georgia clubs have ever reached the Semifinals: The 1980 Atlanta Wolves and the 1981 Atlanta Datagraphics. The only Georgia-based club to make a deep run in the Modern Era (1995-present) was the 2014 Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL) team that reached the Quarterfinals led by their head coach Eric Wynalda. In fact, only four Georgia teams have reached the Quarterfinals in tournament history. Atlanta United are one win away from joining that select group.

LIVE VIDEO (Kickoff: 10:30 p.m. ET)

The match between Sacramento Republic and LAFC is the lone Round 5 matchup that pits a USL side against a MLS side. Both teams are seeking their first trip to the Quarterfinals with the winner heading on the road to take on the Houston Dynamo on July 18.

HOW THEY GOT HERE / HISTORY

Sacramento reached the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup by taking down the four-time champion Seattle Sounders in the Fourth Round with a 2-1 extra time win at home. This win sent the Republic to the Fifth Round for a second straight season. This is the club’s fifth trip to the US Open Cup and of those five appearances, they have won multiple games in four of those years, but have never advanced beyond the Round of 16. The Fourth Round’s upset of the Sounders marked the second year in a row (and second time overall) that the Republic have upset a MLS side, having eliminated Real Salt Lake in 2017 by the score of 4-1.

Before beating the Sounders, the Republic had to get by the PDL’s San Francisco City in the Second Round. They then traveled away from home to beat USL rivals Reno 1868 1-0 in the Third Round. To this point, Sacramento has been led by Kevin Aleman who has two goals in the tournament, including the game-winner in the Reno game and Villyan Bijev, who had a man of the match performance to lead the Republic to a win over the Sounders.

The expansion MLS side LAFC is coming off their first ever Open Cup match in Round 4 where they beat Fresno FC 2-0 through goals from Diego Rossi and Latif Blessing. While LAFC, as a club, don’t have any Open Cup experience, they are led by a head coach in Bob Bradley who won the US Open Cup in 1998 and 2000 with the Chicago Fire. In 1998, the Fire were an expansion team in MLS so Bradley certainly has experience with putting together a winning team in Year One.

Los Angeles FC (MLS)
1st US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 1-0-0
Home: 1-0-0
vs. Div. 2: 1-0-0
Best finish: First appearance

Sacramento Republic FC (USL)
5th US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 11-3-1 (0-1 PK)
Away: 1-2-1 (0-1 PK)
vs. MLS: 2-2-1 (0-1 PK)
Best finish: Fifth Round (2017)

RECENT FORM / TEAM LEADERS

The Republic currently sit in third place in the USL Western Conference and are coming off a tough 1-0 loss at the weekend to San Antonio. They are led by Cameron Iwasa who has scored a team-best five goals, and also had one of the two goals in Sacramento’s win over Seattle in the Open Cup.

LAFC will be without a few players who are away for the World Cup, notably Omar Gaber (Egypt), Laurent Ciman (Belgium), Marco Urena (Costa Rica), and Carlos Vela (Mexico). They still have the talent to get the result, with new signing Adama Diomande scoring at will in MLS since joining LAFC from Hull City in England. LAFC currently sit in third place in the MLS Western Conference and are coming off a thrilling 4-3 comeback win against San Jose Earthquakes before having a week off for the World Cup. Their leading scorer is the absent Carlos Vela with seven goals and five assists, but Diego Rossi is not far behind with five goals and six assists.

2018 US Open Cup Round 5: Houston Dynamo hold off Minnesota United after late PK miss (video)

Houston Dynamo opponents don’t just find wins hard to come by at BBVA Compass Stadium, but goals are even a tall task in Texas.

Minnesota United FC became the Dynamo’s third straight shutout victim in all competitions as Houston made Mauro Manotas’ 47th minute glancing header stand up in a 1-0 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Fifth Round victory Monday night before 1,930 fans.

“I think we got the result we wanted,” said Houston goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who had five saves in the shutout and survived a furious Minnesota comeback in the closing 30 minutes, including a penalty kick attempt in the 87th minute that smacked off the right post.

Houston, which has not lost at home since March, will host defending US Open Cup champion Sporting Kansas City in the Quarterfinals on July 18. It will be the fourth straight year that Sporting KC and the Dynamo have squared off in the Open Cup with Kansas City having won two of the last three, including last year’s 2-0 win at BBVA Compass Stadium in the Round of 16.

“Obviously we’re disappointed,” said Minnesota head coach Adrian Heath. “I thought it was a little bit too late. I learned a valuable lesson today about this group, both individually and collectively, that will certainly help us moving forward. We’ve got to the stage now where we have to start to make some difficult and hard decisions on people and that is what we will do. I think tonight will turn out to be a really good night in the long term.”

The Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City will meet in the US Open Cup for the fourth year in a row.
The Houston Dynamo and Sporting Kansas City will meet in the US Open Cup for the fourth year in a row.

With Monday night’s contest coming in the middle of the MLS two-week World Cup break, neither squad put in their normal starting 11, which might have partly accounted for a lackluster first half that saw one shot on goal for the two teams combined.

“We were a little bit erratic with the ball when passing with our movements. You can consider that normal because some of the guys haven’t been able to play consistently, but they worked hard,” said Houston head coach Wilmer Cabrera. “In the second half, I think we improved. We came out much better – more energetic, sharper.”

It took the Dynamo just 90 seconds into the second half to break the deadlock as defender Adam Lundqvist, acquired by Houston on April 26 from IF Elfsborg in Sweden, sent in a curling left-footed corner kick to the near post, where Manotas perfectly timed a run and let the ball glance off his head and by Minnesota keeper Bobby Shuttleworth.

It added to Manotas’ club-best five career goals in US Open Cup play and it was Lundkvist’s first points since joining the Dynamo.

“I saw the excitement of the crowd and also saw Manotas come in just perfect, and it was a great call … just shows the type of goal scorer he is,” said Lundqvist. “He had perfect control with his head, and yeah, it felt amazing to see it going in.”

By the 56th minute, Houston had out-shot Minnesota, 12-5, in the contest and it appeared that the Loons offense was still waiting at baggage claim, but Minnesota peppered Seitz and Co. in the final 30 minutes with eight shots including four on target.

“I think we kind of stopped trying to play the ball, trying to play a little bit more possession, and they took the ball and they took the risk,” said Cabrera. “They were sending some guys up front and they created some options.”

Minnesota, which didn’t score in their first US Open Cup match this season, a win at Cincinnati FC in penalty kicks after a scoreless game, appeared poised to finally find the back of the net when Loon midfielder Miguel Ibarra was toppled in the air on a cross whipped in by Alexi Gomez. There wasn’t a lot of contact on the play but center referee Guido Gonzalez, Jr., pointed to the penalty spot.

“I think it’s one of those plays where they whipped a good, dangerous ball in to the back post … I don’t know if he was touched. I didn’t see that because I was following the ball, but the referee thought he saw something there and they called it,” said Seitz.

Darwin Quintero stepped up to the penalty spot for Minnesota and smacked the ball off the right post.

“These are the games you can win the championship with,” said Lundqvist. “I mean on a bad day, if you can still get to the next round … it’s huge. Also, cliché, but a little luck on our side.”

Cabrera tried to pad Houston’s slim advantage in the second half with the substation of three starters – Honduran forwards Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto as well as playmaker midfielder Tomas Martinez – but the Dynamo had to defend through four minutes of stoppage time to secure the win.

The Houston coach was pleased that he was able to get 90 minutes of playing time for center back Philippe Senderos, who is returning from injury, and got a good luck at Kevin Garcia at right back. Lundqvist, who has been playing out of position at right back since joining the Dynamo, was able to play in his more natural left back spot Monday as Houston captain DaMarcus Beasley had the night off.

Beasley was a mainstay with the US Men’s National Team and Monday’s goal scorer, 22-year-old Manotas, is working toward his goal of someday representing his country of Colombia at the World Cup.

“That is why I work every day. I wake up dreaming that I’m with the national team of Colombia,” said Manotas.

The Dynamo out-shot Minnesota, 14-13, in the win and The Dynamo picked up 19 fouls on the evening while the Loons were whistled just six times.

The Dynamo advance to the Quarterfinals for the third time in the last four years and the sixth time in club history. Houston is still seeking the club’s first trip to the US Open Cup Final with their best finish coming in a pair of Semifinal runs in 2006 and 2009.

Perhaps no MLS team was looking forward to the league’s two-week World Cup break more than the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo limped into their last MLS match with seven players on the injury report, including five defenders and another starting defender, center back Adolfo Machado, away on international duty with Panama in Russia.

While Houston head coach Wilmer Cabrera hopes his team can heal for the second half of the MLS season, he also isn’t taking Monday’s US Open Cup Round of 16 home match against Western Conference foe Minnesota United FC lightly.

“We want to win at home and we have to win at home, so it’s a very important game for us,” Cabrera told HoustonDynamo.com. “At home we have to be solid and we cannot go just play for fun. That’s not the way we are.”

The Dynamo come into Monday’s match on back-to-back shutout wins at home – 2-0 over struggling Colorado on June 9 and a 5-0 US Open Cup Fourth Round win over amateur side NTX Rayados on June 6. Those wins helped Houston stop a two-game MLS slide, both of those losses were by one goal on the road where Houston has struggled, including a 2-1 loss at Minnesota on April 28.

Weather is expected to be a factor Monday as a tropical system is moving into the Houston area from the Gulf of Mexico Sunday and could dump up to four inches of rain through Tuesday. The good news is that the system will knock down the temperatures with kickoff comfortably in the 70s.

How They Got Here

Houston defeated Dallas area amateur side NTX Rayados 5-0 at home on June 6. The match was scoreless at the half before the Dynamo busted loose with Memo Rodriguez and Aldo Quintanilla each scoring a brace and Matias Zaldivar adding the fifth goal.

Minnesota United FC needed penalty kicks to get past USL and recently announced MLS expansion team FC Cincinnati on the road after a scoreless draw through 120 minutes of play. The Loons converted their first three kicks from the penalty spot with Christian Ramirez, Collin Martin and Brent Kallman finding the back of the net. A couple of Cincinnati misses and a save by Minnesota keeper Bobby Shuttleworth sealed the 3-1 win.

The Dynamo jumped all over NYCFC at home, 3-1, on May 25 before falling 2-1 at Real Salt Lake (May 30) and 1-0 at Montreal Impact (June 2). The wins over Rayados and Colorado gives Houston five straight wins at home coming into Monday’s match.

2018 US Open Cup Round 5: Croizet’s “best goal”, Salloi’s brace keep Sporting KC perfect vs. FC Dallas

For the fourth time in their respective club histories, Sporting Kansas City hosted FC Dallas in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. On Saturday night, Sporting KC defeated FC Dallas for the fourth time in the Open Cup, winning 3-2 in front of 15,238 fans at Children’s Mercy Park.

After Daniel Salloi’s brace gave Sporting a 2-1 lead, Roland Lamah of FC Dallas tied the game in the 77th minute. It appeared as though the match was headed to extra time, but Yohan Croizet, who entered the game to replace Salloi, sent an unstoppable volley into the upper 90 of the goal to send the defending US Open Cup champions into the Quarterfinals for the second year in a row and the third time in the last four years.

The game took a while to get on track as both teams felt each other out. Manager Peter Vermes told the post-game press conference the club wasn’t sure whether Dallas would play a five-man midfield or a 4-4-2. He said they adjusted well to the 4-4-1-1 Dallas ended up in.

Dallas struck first in the 18th minute. Off a throw-in, Maxi Urruti put a ball into the penalty area that Michael Barrios got on the end of. Goalkeeper Adrian Zendejas made the initial save, but the ball rebounded back to Barrios, who put a looping shot back on frame. It initially looked as if the ball was across the line before Carlos Gruezo got a touch on it, but the goal was eventually given to Gruezo, staking Dallas to a 1-0 lead.

After the goal, Sporting KC seemed to get much more of the possession and it paid off. Shortly after having hit the woodwork twice in quick succession, Graham Zusi put a cross into the penalty area from about 30 yards away, finding Ike Opara at the back post. Opara’s header across the goal mouth was tapped in by Salloi from close range to tie the match in the 43rd minute.

screen_shot_2018-06-16_at_10.16.16_pmAfter halftime, Sporting continued to take the lion’s share of the possession, taking six of the first seven shots of the second half. That domination led to Salloi’s second goal of the contest. Jaylin Lindsey found Wan Kuzain near the top of the penalty area, who squeezed a ball through two Dallas defenders to Salloi. The Hungarian settled the ball quickly with his left foot and shot with his right, putting the ball past goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to tie the game.

Combined with his three goals in last year’s tournament, the brace gave Salloi his fifth US Open Cup goal, the most by an active Sporting KC player and second only to Dom Dwyer’s six goals in club history.

In the 77th minute, it was Dallas’s turn to equalize, and the goal came against the run of play. After a poor punch by Zendejas, the ball fell to Roland Lamah. Lamah took one touch, taking the ball to his left. Lamah’s shot then somehow found its way through four Sporting KC players before settling in the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2.

The match seemed destined to follow last year’s route into extra time, but Yohan Croizet had a different idea. After subbing into the match for Salloi in the 85th minute, Croizet had not yet been on the pitch for four minutes when he hit a candidate for goal of the tournament. While trying to clear a ball intercepted from Khiry Shelton, Maynor Figueroa popped the ball up in the air. Croizet waited for the spinning ball to come down and hit it on the half-volley, giving Gonzalez no chance and putting Sporting KC into the Quarterfinals.

89′ ⚽️… Pin this goal tweet to the moon. @SportsCenter, keep it in your top-10 until 2039. @TimesSquareNYC, don’t show the ball drop on NYE, just loop this greatness.

— Sporting KC (@SportingKC) June 17, 2018

After the match, Croizet said, “Seriously, it’s my best goal in my career. In the last minute. I’m really, really happy tonight.” It was the second-latest regulation game-winner in Sporting Kansas City history. The latest game-winner by the club came in the 2006 Third Round when Scott Sealy scored in the 90th minute against the PDL’s Des Moines Menace. “I had the perfect angle,” Opara said. “I saw him winding up. He hit it great with contact. Well, maybe sliced it a little bit, but it was good contact to begin with. The keeper had no chance. That’s a goal that wins a game right there.” Sporting KC will travel to face the winner of Monday’s Minnesota United-Houston Dynamo match in the next round. If Houston wins, the game will take place on July 18. If Minnesota wins, the game will take place at a date still to be determined.

For the fourth straight year of US Open Cup action, the Philadelphia Union and New York Red Bulls faced off. This time around, the Union defeated their MLS rivals, 2-1. With the win, and move on to the Quarterfinals for the fifth time in seven years where they will host either D.C. United or Orlando City SC on July 18.

Cory Burke and Haris Medunjanin each scored for the Union with US international Alejandro Bedoya assisting on both goals to lead the way.

Philadelphia held an 11-6 shots advantage including many prime opportunities within striking distance. Cory Burke headed Fabrice-Jean Picault‘s cross just wide in the 31st minute as the young forward was wide open inside the box. Moments later, Picault’s shot forced Robles to his left to keep the game scoreless. In total, six of the Union’s 11 shots missed the frame in the first half as the home side could have easily taken a lead into the locker room.

After the intermission, the Red Bulls came out with their own opportunities. Connor Lade’s shot from outside the box was blocked a minute after New York earned a free kick that didn’t lead to any threatening chance on goal. Two minutes later, in the 49th minute, Andre Blake was forced to save Kemar Lawrence’s shot before Marc Rzatkowski left-footed shot was blocked in the box. New York threatened with a header that went wide.

The Union finally opened the scoring on Medunjanin’s impressive strike from outside the box. The 52nd-minute goal was Medujanin’s first career Open Cup goal and gave the Union the lead. Bedoya brought the ball up the right wing before finding Medujanin in the center of the field where the midfielder dribbled to his left from about 25 yards out and sent a rocket into the back of the net.

Philadelphia didn’t let up after the much-needed score and doubled their lead less than nine minutes later. Burke, who frustrated the Red Bulls’ defensive unit regularly, capped off a quality team effort as Medunjanin fed Bedoya who sent a through ball to a wide-open Burke in the box.

Each team traded missed chances later in the second half as the Red Bulls attempted to make a comeback. Bradley Wright-Phillips cut the deficit to one as Kaku slotted the ball to the dangerous forward who finished accurately to score his fifth career US Open Cup goal. With that tally, Wright-Phillips ties Amado Guevara for the most tournament goals in club history.

While New York had a few more plays towards goal, the Union’s defensive unit hunkered down and held on for the 2-1 victory over their MLS foes. With the win, the Union remain undefeated against the Red Bulls in Open Cup play (2-0-2, 1-1 PKs). This marked the first time in the Modern Era (1995-present) that two teams have met in four consecutive tournaments.

The win also extends the Union’s tournament unbeaten streak to 12 games (7-0-5, 2-3 PKs), the second-longest in the Modern Era. (NOTE: Matches that end in penalty kicks are officially listed as draws)

2018 US Open Cup Round 5 preview: Round of 16 continues with two Saturday MLS games (video)

June 16, 2018 by Phil Naegely

2018 US Open Cup bracketThe Portland Timbers became the first team to punch their ticket to the 2018 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday night. Two more Round of 16 matchups are on the schedule for Saturday night with a pair of MLS vs. MLS games.

At 7 p.m. the Philadelphia Union will host the New York Red Bulls followed by the defending champion Sporting Kansas City welcoming FC Dallas to Children’s Mercy Park.

This is just the ninth time in the Modern Era (1995-present) that a Major League Soccer team has played in a US Open Cup game on a Saturday. The last time it happened was during another World Cup break in 2014 when there were three games on the same night involving MLS teams. In fact, all three of those MLS teams (Chivas USA, New York Red Bulls, Real Salt Lake) were all eliminated by teams from the North American Soccer League (NASL). The two most notable Saturday games of the Modern Era were championship games as the Chicago Fire lifted the trophy in 2000 and the Los Angeles Galaxy won their first US Open Cup title.

Check out a preview of each Saturday game below, including links to tonight’s live video feed.

For the first time in the Modern Era (1995-present) two teams will meet for the fourth tournament in a row when the Philadelphia Union take on the New York Red Bulls in US Open Cup play on Saturday night at Talen Energy Stadium. If you include Open Cup qualifying, this will be the fifth meeting with the first match coming in the now-defunct 2010 MLS qualifying tournament. It was one of the first official games at the newly-opened Red Bull Arena and hometown Red Bulls prevailed 2-1 on April 27, 2010.

While the Union have struggled in league play this year, the Philadelphia heads into Saturday’s match riding an 11-game unbeaten streak in Open Cup play,  the second-longest unbeaten streak in the Modern Era (matches that go to penalty kicks are officially listed as a draw). Their last US Open Cup loss was a 3-1 result against the Seattle Sounders in the 2014 Final. In this year’s edition, the Union advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating the Richmond Kickers, 5-0 in the previous round. Five different scorers tallied a goal for Philadelphia in June 6 match.

The New York Red Bulls travel to Chester, PA on short rest after defeating the Seattle Sounders, 2-1 in league play on Wednesday night. New York advanced to face the Union after defeating New York City FC, 4-0 in front of its home crowd.

HISTORY

Philadelphia Union (MLS)
7th US Open Cup appearance

Overall: 13-3-6 (3-3 PK)
Home: 12-2-2 (1-1 PK)
vs. MLS: 5-3-5 (2-3 PK)
Best finish: Runner-Up (2014, 2015)

After falling in consecutive finals matches in 2014 and 2015 to the Sounders and Sporting Kansas City, respectively, the Union have yet to return to the Semifinals. In the 2016 Quarterfinals, the New England Revolution advanced on a 4-2 decision in penalty kicks after the Union scored an equalizer in the 90th minute to tie the game at 1-1. In 2017, the Red Bulls ousted the Union 5-3 in penalties.

With the Union last playing on Friday, June 8 against Toronto FC, Philadelphia most likely will play its regular players. Alejandro Bedoya and Haris Medunjanin served red-card suspensions during this match, so both of these players should see the field during Saturday’s US Open Cup match.

New York Red Bulls (MLS)
20th US Open Cup appearance

Overall: 22-18-3 (2-1 PK)
Away: 11-12-1 (1-0 PK)
vs. MLS: 8-10-3 (2-1 PK)
Best finish: Runner-Up (2003, 2017)

Just like the Union, the Red Bulls’ best US Open Cup finish is runner-up. And they have done it twice. In last year’s tournament, the Red Bulls lost 2-1 to Sporting Kansas City. It was their first trip to the Final since 2003 when the Red Bulls (then the Metrostars) lost 1-0 to the Chicago Fire at Giants Stadium.

It wouldn’t be shocking if the Red Bulls rest some of their regular starters after playing a league match on Wednesday. However, nothing is officially confirmed at this time.

At Children’s Mercy Park, two of the best clubs in the MLS Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas, will meet in a Round of 16 clash in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, named after the original owner of both clubs. The weather is expected to be a factor in the match with a heat advisory predicting temperatures in the upper 90s and heat index readings between 100 and 105 degrees.

FC Dallas picked up a 1-0 win on the road in the Fourth Round over USL side San Antonio FC, while Sporting KC defeated Real Salt Lake 2-0 at Rio Tinto.

Both clubs are in good form of late. Sporting KC is on a seven match unbeaten streak across all competitions, their last loss a 1-0 road defeat to the New England Revolution on April 28. FC Dallas is on an eight match unbeaten streak and have won their last five. Their last loss was on April 29 to NYCFC in a 3-1 match at Yankee Stadium.

This will be the fourth meeting between these two clubs in the US Open Cup and the fourth time that the match has been played in Kansas. In 2004, the then-Kansas City Wizards defeated the then-Dallas Burn 4-0 in a quarterfinal match played at the Blue Valley District Activity Center. In 2015, Sporting KC dismantled FC Dallas 6-2 in a Round of 16 clash, behind four goals from Dom Dwyer and a brace from Krisztián Németh. The 2017 match-up in the quarterfinals saw three red cards as 10-man Sporting KC defeated 9-man FC Dallas 3-0 on three goals in extra time from Latif Blessing (2) and Daniel Salloi.

FC Dallas has two players with six goals each in league play in Roland Lamah and Maxi Urruti. Mauro Diaz leads the club in assists with eight. Sporting KC’s top scorer is Johnny Russell who has six goals across all competitions. Roger Espinoza has a career-high six assists in league play so far in this campaign.

HISTORY

Sporting Kansas City (MLS)
20th US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 27-13-6 (4-2 PK)
Home: 19-7-2 (2-0 PK)
vs. MLS teams: 13-8-3 (3-0 PK)
Best finish: 2004, 2012, 2015, 2017 champions

FC Dallas (MLS)
21st US Open Cup appearance
Overall: 34-17-6 (5-1 PK)
Away: 14-11-2 (2-0 PK)
vs. MLS teams: 13-12-3 (2-1 PK)
Best finish: 1997, 2016 champions

The matchup is also a meeting of the last three US Open Cups championships. FC Dallas have won the Open Cup twice, in 1997 and 2016. They also reached the final in 2005 and 2007. Sporting KC are the reigning titleholders and have won the Open Cup four times: 2004, 2012, 2015, 2017. If Sporting wins one more title, they will tie the all-time record for most Open Cup championships.

FC Dallas can make history with a win tonight. If they advance, it will be the 17th Quarterfinal appearance for the club, which would tie the all-time tournament record, held by Kutis Soccer Club (St. Louis).

2018 US Open Cup Round 5: With Blanco’s goal, Portland Timbers hold off LA Galaxy to reach Quarterfinals

Timbers head coach Gio Savarese lamented numerous chances the Portland Timbers left on the table the last time his club played the Los Angeles Galaxy in MLS league play. The 1-all draw broke the Timbers’ winning  streak at six, but Savarese was hoping for better offensive efficiency and more cohesive defense.

Thirteen days later, the same two sides were paired up in the Fifth Round of the 2018 US Open Cup at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon, but the tune from Savarese was very much different. Behind a stout defense, stellar goalkeeping from Jeff Attinella and a Sebastian Blanco goal in the 30th minute, the Timbers used a complete team effort to hold off the Los Angeles Galaxy to advance in the tournament. Portland now awaits the June 20 meeting between the Sacramento Republic (USL) and Los Angeles Football Club (MLS) at Banc of California Stadium to learn who and where they will play, as the Republic/LAFC winner will host the Timbers on July 18 in the Open Cup Quarterfinals.

For the Timbers, it will be the club’s third all-time appearance in the Quarterfinals, and the first since 2014.

Savarese made the tactical decision to sit leading scorer Diego Valeri, instead opting for a two-forward attack with Fanendo Adi and Samuel Armenteros up top. Savarese also changed up the formation to use four midfielders in a more traditional 4-4-2 approach versus the “Christmas Tree” formation used over the last few weeks. Savarese gave Lawrence Olum and Diego Chara the task of patrolling the middle and keeping tabs on the Galaxy’s midfield engine of Servando Carrasco and Perry Kitchen. Finally, Savarese gave the creative controls of the Timbers’ offense to Blanco, and he responded with five chances created, an 84 percent passing accuracy, and the team leader in fouls won.

While Armenteros challenged the Galaxy with his speed and Adi used his size, Blanco challenged all night with his guile and passion and the Timbers rallied around him repeatedly.

Los Angeles has seen their season go very up and down, but Galaxy head coach Sigi Schmid had to feel good after watching young forward Ariel Lassiter carry the Galaxy over their Fourth Round win over FC Golden State Force, and the Galaxy dismantle Real Salt Lake at home behind a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimović. With Zlatan traveling overseas, Schmid turned to his veteran playmakers in Ola Kamara, Chris Pontius and Emmanuel Boateng to break down the Timbers defense.

However, the Galaxy never appeared in sync for much of the match as Lassiter’s 89th minute near miss being their best overall chance on the night. Credit should be given to the Timbers’ defensive line of Larrys Mabiala, Vytas, Bill Tuiloma and Zarek Valentin, who worked seamlessly to frustrate the Galaxy and keep Attinella from facing too many chances.

While Armenteros and Chara were active on the offense early, it was Blanco that ended up tallying the Timbers’ 50th US Open Cup goal in the 30th minute. After a buildup on the right-hand flank, Timbers defender Zarek Valentin dropped a cross outside the box to Adi, who executed a lovely drop pass to a charging Blanco on the right. The Timbers midfielder dribbled left quickly and launched a shot that trickled past Galaxy goalkeeper Dave Bingham for the night’s only tally.

Armenteros nearly extended the Timbers’ lead with several key chances between the 53rd and 60th minutes, including hitting the woodwork with a dipping shot off a Valentin cross, but the Timbers would not extend their lead any further. The Galaxy did their best to increase the intensity late to challenge Attinella, but Lassiter’s missile would be their best opportunity to equalize.

With the win, the Timbers eliminate a Southern California team (amateur or professional) for just the second time. The only SoCal team that Portland had defeated prior to Friday night was the Bakersfield Brigade of the Premier Development League.

The Portland Timbers and Los Angeles Galaxy met for the first time in the Round of 16 of the 2016 US Open Cup.

LIVE VIDEO TONIGHT (11 p.m. ET kickoff)

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Round of 16 kicks off tonight with the Portland Timbers hosting MLS opponent the Los Angeles Galaxy at Providence Park.

This is just the fifth time in the Modern Era (1995-present) that a Major League Soccer team has played in a US Open Cup game on a Friday. The last one came in 1999 when the Colorado Rapids edged the Tampa Bay Mutiny 1-0 in a Quarterfinal match that doubled as a MLS regular season game. The 1998 US Open Cup Final between the Chicago Fire and the Columbus Crew took place on a Friday.

The Timbers are looking to extend a nine-game unbeaten streak across all competitions that reaches back into early April and includes a 1-1 draw against the Galaxy on June 2. That streak also includes the team’s 2-0 home win over the San Jose Earthquakes in the Fourth Round of the US Open Cup. In that match, Portland looked to Diego Chara for leadership of a starting XI populated by both first team starters as well as call-ups from the club’s USL franchise, T2. With the World Cup break, Portland supporters can expect to see more first-teamers in the line up.

Speaking of first-teamers, the Timber’s offense is led by Diego Valeri (6 goals) and Sebastian Blanco (5 goals), who have accounted for 11 of the team’s 20 goals in league play.

The Galaxy have had their own struggles this year despite winning their MLS home opener against the Timbers 2-1 in early March. They suffered a stretch during the season when they lost five of six matches. However, they have done well lately, earning three wins and that draw with Portland in their last five matches (3-1-1). This has moved them the table into their current position of eighth place in the Western Conference and back within striking distance of a playoff spot.

The Galaxy will likely feature more first team players with the World Cup giving players a break, but Los Angeles will be without superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic, their leading scorer (7 goals in 11 matches). Ibrahimovic was in Moscow Thursday for the start of the FIFA World Cup to promote a new Visa product.

HISTORY

Portland Timbers FC (MLS)
14th US Open Cup appearance (7th as MLS)
Overall: 15-12-1 (0-1 PK) | 8-6-0 as MLS
Home: 7-6-1 (0-1 PK) | 5-2-0 as MLS
vs. MLS teams: 5-8-1 (0-1 PK) | 5-5-0 as MLS
Best finish: 2013 Semifinals (Lost 2-1 at Real Salt Lake of MLS)

Over the years, the Timbers have struggled against Southern California teams in US Open Cup, famously falling to a pair of SoCal amateur sides: Hollywood United in 2008 and Eric Wynalda’s Cal FC squad in 2012. Most recently, in 2016, they lost 1-0 to the Galaxy in the Round of 16 on a first half goal by Raul Mendiola. The Timbers have an Open Cup history that dates back to their USL days when they made their tournament debut in 2004. They never advanced beyond the Fourth Round as a USL team, and their best finish as a MLS franchise came in 2013 when they lost 2-1 to Real Salt Lake in the Semifinals.

Los Angeles Galaxy (MLS)
18th US Open Cup appearance

Overall: 31-15-1 (1-0 PK)
Away: 9-12-1 (1-0 PK)
vs. MLS teams: 12-11-1 (1-0 PK)
Best finish: 2001, 2005 champions

After winning the club’s second US Open Cup title in 2005, the Galaxy returned to the Final the following year. They lost to the Chicago Fire 3-1 and that began a dark period for the Galaxy in the tournament, which some could argue was a shift in priorities as David Beckham arrived in 2007. From that point on, the Galaxy were eliminated by the Richmond Kickers (USL Second Division) in 2007, failed to qualify in 2008 and 2009, lost their second game to the Sounders in back-to-back years (2010, 2011), then lost three years in a row to the NASL’s Carolina RailHawks on the road (2012-14). Since 2015, the draw has been more kind to the Galaxy as the federation has put a greater emphasis on minimizing travel (i.e. no more trips to the East Coast). The Galaxy have reached the Quarterfinals in each of the last three years, including a run to the Semifinals in 2016 where they lost eventual champions FC Dallas in extra time. Los Angeles is tied with D.C. United with 12 US Soccer Majors, which is the most in the Modern Era. Is this the year they can snap their 13-year US Open Cup trophy drought and break that tie with United?

2018 US Open Cup Round 4: Brian Ownby of Louisville City voted TheCup.us Player of the Round

As soon as Brian Ownby brushed off Scott Caldwell as if the New England Revolution midfielder was a youth team player, Ownby had one thing in his mind.

Four touches later, Ownby put the cherry on top of a fantastic performance for Louisville City with a laser of a shot to the top corner, helping the USL side defeat the Revolution, 3-2, in a wild and entertaining Fourth Round match in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup (WATCH BELOW).

Ownby’s goal and overall individual performance earned him TheCup.us Player of the Round, beating out fellow USL player Justin Davis of Nashville FC and Minnesota United FC goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth for the honor.

The award is voted on by the staff of TheCup.us and a select panel from the North American Soccer Reporters.

“You could see the juice out there,” Ownby said with a laugh. “Everyone was buzzing around, everyone had each other’s backs regardless of a mistake here or there. We always believed in the process, and always had each others backs, and I think that showed (in the win).”

The former University of Virginia star began his professional career with the Houston Dynamo, after being drafted seventh overall in the old MLS Supplemental Draft. Ownby made the team and played parts of three seasons with the club, including making 21 appearances in 2014, though mostly off the bench, and perhaps played out of position.

But after two years back in his native Virginia with the Richmond Kickers and now in his second season in Louisville, Ownby has carved out a position for himself as a left winger, sometimes swapping and showing up on the right wing.

What’s clear is he’s at his best when he has the ball and can run at opposing defenses, taking advantage of his pace and quick acceleration to put defenders on their heels. He did that all evening against the Revolution, running himself into the ground and keeping the Revolution from pushing up on the right wing thanks to the danger of Ownby on the counter.

He set up three goal-scoring chances, including assisting on Oscar Jimenez’s goal, and had three shots in the match against the Revolution. Ownby also won both of his aerial duels and finished second on the team in overall duels, constantly putting his body on the line to win the ball.

Ownby recorded seven goals and four assists for Louisville on its run to the USL Cup title in 2017, and after a slow start, the June 5 match against the Revolution brought out the best in Ownby, and could set him up for more success in the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup.
