2024 US Open Cup Round 4: Atlanta United takes over in 2nd half, blanks Charlotte Independence

USL League One side Charlotte Independence traveled down to Fifth/Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia for some Open Cup “Action at the Fraction” against Atlanta United on Tuesday evening. After a slow start in the first half, United’s offense kicked in during the second half with a brace from Nick Firmino and a goal from Daniel Rios as Atlanta won 3-0. It was the 2019 US Open Cup champs’ first tournament win since 2022.

The two sides kicked off in beautiful weather in front of an announced crowd of 2,522.

A heavily rotated Atlanta United squad faced an early setback in the eighth minute as the recovering center back Stian Gregersen was forced off due to a concussion protocol concern. His replacement was Noah Cobb, a product of Atlanta’s academy and one who’s seen significant first team minutes recently.

The first half progressed rather quietly, save for a couple of dangerous free kick opportunities in favor of Charlotte, but tons of possession and half-chances by the Five Stripes. However, Atlanta United found themselves fortunate due to the absence of video review when Ronald Hernandez brought down Obregon Jr. just inside the box in the 38th minute. Despite the close call, the referee signaled for a free kick rather than awarding a penalty.

Though they dominated possession and generated numerous chances, Atlanta United struggled to convert their superiority into goals, a recurring theme in recent matches. Atlanta enjoyed 67% possession in the first half and took nine shots compared to Charlotte’s three, but they failed to find the breakthrough goal.

The defensive setup of Charlotte’s back five and low block presented significant challenges for Atlanta’s forwards, who struggled with clinical finishing in the final third.

Charlotte, for their part, seemed content to absorb all the pressure and try and strike on a counter. A slippery pitch caused multiple players to lose their footing, and Charlotte nearly took advantage early on after an Atlanta corner was played out to midfield. The last defender slipped, leaving Charlotte in a 1v1 vs keeper Josh Cohen, but the Independence weren’t urgent enough to set up the shot in time.

It wasn’t until the 52nd minute that the deadlock was broken, with Firmino putting the Five Stripes ahead after a well-executed cut-back and assist from Matt Edwards.

The momentum continued to favor Atlanta United as they made substitutions in the 63rd minute, bringing on Brooks Lennon and Caleb Wiley for Edwards and Ashton Gordon.

In the 70th minute, Wiley and keeper Josh Cohen played a crucial role in doubling the lead. A goal kick was taken by Cohen, looking to find Daniel Rios, who held off a Charlotte defender so the ball cleared over both of them. Meanwhile, an on-running Wiley snagged the ball and dribbled to the end line before providing an assist for Firmino’s second goal of the night.

Following the second goal, Atlanta United made two more changes, bringing on Bartosz Slisz and Xande Silva for Luke Brennan and Dax McCarty in the 71st minute. The hosts effectively sealed the victory in the 85th minute when Silva’s run down the flank culminated in a low cross to Rios, who slotted home the third goal of the night.

Atlanta United will now move on in the Open Cup to face either South Georgia Tormenta or Charleston Battery, and Charlotte Independence returns to league play against Forward Madison on Saturday.

2023 US Open Cup Round 3: Memphis 901 scores late equalizer, OT winner in upset of Atlanta United

It was a fresh match between two sides with absolutely no history — at least on paper — but Wednesday’s Third Round tie between visiting Memphis 901 and 2019 US Open Cup winner Atlanta United conjured up some of the best underlying storylines a Cup match could manifest in a 2-1 Memphis victory in extra time at to advance to the Round of 32.

Memphis 901’s new manager, Stephen Glass, was Atlanta United 2’s gaffer early in their tenure before becoming interim manager of the first team in 2020. He left for Aberdeen in Scotland before arriving in Memphis in November of 2022, where he took over a team ripe with former MLS and Atlanta United 2 talent. The proverbial chip on the shoulder was on full display Wednesday night as Glass took absolute advantage of the tools at his disposal to helm another 2023 “Cupset.”

Atlanta — playing host at Fifth Third Bank Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State University — started the match well, slotting a goal in the third minute, but it would ultimately be Glass’ side that came out on top.

Atlanta quickly became lax and Memphis’ chances racked up one by one — as did Atlanta’s yellow cards. That lack of inspiration seemed to progress into an inability to string together passes or win duels, and 901 continued to take advantage. Memphis was finally rewarded in the 96th minute when a penalty was given via a late tackle in the box, and former Atlanta United 2 player Phillip Goodrum stepped to the spot. He calmly buried it past Atlanta keeper Clement Diop and forced extra time.

The killer blow came moments later as extra time began. A sustained spell of pressure forced a turnover against Atlanta, and Memphis drove forward with numbers into the box. Nighte Pickering took full advantage of his opportunity and put the Tennessee side up 2-1. Atlanta continued to push for the equalizer but ultimately came up short, leaving behind one of their most distraught performances — in all competitions — in history.

“I felt that today Memphis were more ready for the battle, they were trying to win the duels and do everything they can to put pressure on us,” said Atlanta United coach Gonzalo Pineda. “It didn’t manifest today.”

The Memphis playbook was on full display the entire match; from the opening whistle they were disrupting Atlanta’s desire to possess the ball and play from the back. But it was a quick Atlanta switch from right to left by Luiz Araujo that found Tyler Wolff early — and somewhat against the run of play — to give Atlanta the quick 1-0 lead when Wolff fired the ball just past former D.C. United keeper Bill Hamid.

It all went downhill for the Five Stripes from that moment.

Memphis continued to win the battles, as Pineda eloquently described in his post-match press conference, while the Five Stripes fell short on their individual duels.

“This happens to be more mental to me than any other thing,” Pineda described of his team’s overall performance. “But the reality is today, we didn’t play well. And we need to correct many things.”

Luis Abram, Araujo, Wolff, and Ajani Fortune all received yellow cards during the match as frustration appeared to creep through the team.

Halftime came and went with no subs to either side, and the match progressed similarly to the first half. Memphis created multiple chances and shots, ultimately finishing the match with 12 corners, 30 total shots with 10 on goal. Meanwhile, Atlanta United settled for 11 total shots with two on goal and three corners. Memphis also forced Diop, a seasoned keeper with plenty of MLS and first-team experience, to tie his career high number of saves at eight. Memphis simply passed both the eye test and stat test as the better team, while Atlanta floundered.

“We are in shock because they didn’t beat us with quality, they beat us because of attitude,” said Atlanta wingback and captain Ronald Hernandez. “We are upset about it because we talked about it before the game. We as a team are more upset than you guys.”

It all came to a head in the 96th minute when Memphis finally got the opportunity they were looking for. Juanjo Purata went in for a sliding tackle in the box and just missed the ball, instead catching Goodrum’s legs and giving up the penalty for him to take. Goodrum made no mistake and leveled the game at 1-1 in the dying seconds, forcing the extra 30 minutes against his former club.

Memphis rapidly struck again in the 100th minute when Pickering was able to firmly redirect a short cross from Luiz Fernando past Diop. The last solid opportunity for Atlanta to find an equalizer came from forward Machop Chol in the 103rd minute, but Hamid was positioned well and made a comfortable save.

The 2-1 scoreline would hold and be the final nail in the coffin for Atlanta, as they burned out of the Open Cup as quickly as they entered.

Memphis, on the other hand, will view this as one of their best results in team history, and the first time they’ve ever defeated an MLS side.

“I think after the first goal in the first half we couldn’t really get set and they kept coming,” Wolff said. “We didn’t have many answers. It just wasn’t great.”

Memphis are now unbeaten in their past five matches in all competitions, and appear to be entering a more confident run of form as Glass settles in as manager.

That mindset will be vital if they wish to surpass their previous Open Cup best finish from 2019, where they exited in the Fourth Round. Meanwhile, Atlanta will return to league play on Saturday against Nashville, who pulled out a 1-0 win over San Antonio FC in their own Open Cup match.

Marking its first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup appearance as a Major League Soccer club, Nashville SC scored three unanswered goals to erase a 2-0 second half deficit to eliminate Atlanta United, 3-2, at GEODIS Park in extra time on Wednesday night.

Second half goals from Nashville midfielder Hany Muhktar and second half substitute CJ Sapong provided the team much-needed offensive momentum, which carried into extra time.

After a goal from former LA Galaxy II forward Ethan Zubak in the 94th minute, Nashville claimed its first lead of the game and, later, came away victorious to maintain its undefeated record in all competitions at their new home stadium. In fact, with the comeback win, Nashville remains undefeated at home in the team’s Open Cup history (5-0-1, 0-1 PKs).

The squad started off slow as Atlanta’s Thiago Almada and Luiz Araújo each executed off shaky defense from centerback Walker Zimmerman, giving Atlanta a commanding 2-0 lead at half.

Nashville, however, regrouped in the second half as Atlanta’s Alan Franco was yellow carded off a foul on Aké Arnaud Loba allowing Muhktar to convert on a right corner penalty kick to slice Atlanta’s lead, 2-1, in the 50th minute.

Throughout the game, both sides found themselves in a frenzy as missed calls resulted in game changing opportunities.

Seeking to tie in the 78th minute, Muhktar passed to Zimmerman, who found the net off a header. The goal, however, was called back due to a controversial offside call on Zimmerman.

The tying goal did come in stoppage time, though, as Sapong provided a header to the top right corner.

After a 2-2 score at the end of regulation, the game continued with two 15-minute extra time sessions.

Not wasting any time, Nashville scored in the 93rd minute with a through ball from Muhktar to Zubak, who avoided the recovering defenders and fired a left footed shot into the far post to take the lead.

From there, Atlanta was provided several opportunities to score but due to impressive play from Nashville SC goalkeeper Joe Willis, Nashville successfully held on to defeat the reigning US Open Cup champions, ending the club’s six-game winning streak in the tournament dating back to 2019.

— Nashville SC (@NashvilleSC) May 12, 2022

Overall, Muhktar stood out as the player of the game as he came away with one goal, one assist, three shots and seven duels won in his 112 minutes.

After the thrilling comeback, Nashville SC will now advance to the Round of 16 in its first US Open Cup run since joining the MLS in February of 2020. Advancing to Round 5 matches the club’s deepest run in the tournament after reaching that same round in it’s augural cup run in 2018 as a member of the USL.

The game marked just the 18th time in the tournament’s Modern Era that a team came back to win (in regulation or in extra time) after trailing by two goals. In fact, combined with Tuesday’s comeback win by Sporting Kansas City over FC Dallas, it is the first time in the Modern Era that two teams from the same round won games after overcoming a two-goal deficit.

Nashville’s next opponent will be announce on Thursday night when the USSF conducts the draw for the Round of 16 which is scheduled to take place the week of May 24-25.

Atlanta United forward Pity Martinez is used to playing in finals.

Before coming to MLS, the former South American Footballer of the Year was a key part of River Plate’s victory over archrival Boca Juniors in the 2018 Copa Libertadores in his native Argentina. On Tuesday, his goal in the 16th minute turned out to be a deciding one as Atlanta held off Minnesota United 2-1 to win the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Martinez not only found the scoresheet, but was involved in the buildup of Atlanta’s opening goal. In the 10th minute against Minnesota, the Argentinian played an inch-perfect toward the box to a streaking Leandro Gonzalez Pirez. Minnesota defender Chase Gasper’s failed tackle attempt deflected the ball past a lunging Vito Mannone to put Atlanta up 1-0.

— Atlanta United FC (@ATLUTD) August 28, 2019

Martinez’s efforts on the night saw him voted TheCup.us Player of the Round for the Final, as voted on by TheCup.us staff, a select panel from the North American Soccer Reporters, and members of TheCup.us’s Patreon team that pledge $10 or more. He edged teammate Justin Meram, who delivered the pass on Martinez’s goal, and defender Miles Robinson.

A native of Mendoza, Argentina, Martinez came up with his boyhood club of Huracán, joining its senior team in 2011. He then joined storied club River Plate in 2015, where he scored 34 goals across 160 appearances in all competitions with the club. After a successful run there, he signed for Atlanta United for a record $17 million.

Martinez has collected a growing list of honors collected during his playing career. Along with winning three domestic cups in Argentina – once with Huracán and twice with River Plate – he collected a pair of Copa Libertadores titles with River Plate in 2015 and 2018. Just a couple weeks prior, he won Campeones Cup with Atlanta as they defeated América 3-2 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, he can add U.S. Open Cup champion to his list.

Martinez becomes just the second player from Argentina to win TheCup.us Player of the Round. The first was Mauro Diaz of FC Dallas who won the award twice in 2016 (Semifinals, Final), including being named TheCup.us Player of the Tournament.

2018 US Open Cup Round 5: Chicago Fire disappoint Atlanta United’s largest crowd in tournament history

After a Fourth Round match against the Columbus Crew that ended in a wild penalty shootout, the Chicago Fire needed just one goal and 90 minutes to continue its 2018 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup run.

Nemanja Nikolic’s 54th minute goal – his third goal of the competition – was enough to lead the Fire past Atlanta United 1-0 in front of an announced crowd of 41,012. It was the largest crowd to ever watch a US Open Cup game in the 105-year history of the tournament. It shattered the previous mark of 35,615 set in the 2011 Final when the Seattle Sounders hosted the Fire at CenturyLink Field.

For the Fire, they clinch a spot in the Quarterfinals for the 14th time in club history , which ranks third-most in tournament history. They will host their next game in the tournament on July 18 when they take on Louisville City FC (USL).

Atlanta United held the better of the play over the first half of the match, relying on strong possession and the play of Tito Villalba on the right wing – with that said, they failed to make the most of their chances and petered out a little as time went on. Chicago nearly made it 1-0 on the 16th minute off of a corner that was nearly touched home by Bastain Schweinsteiger, but barely kept from going over the line by Alec Kann.

Atlanta’s best chance came in the 33rd minute, as a beautiful run and curling shot by Villalba was stopped by Fire keeper Richard Sanchez.

atlanta-united-all-time-attendance-record-2018-us-open-cup-2000But poor defending on Atlanta’s part saw the Fire strike first in the 54th minute. Luis Solignac was afforded too much time to pass the ball to Nikolic, who calmly pegged it past Alec Kann for his team-leading ninth goal across all competitions. From there, Atlanta’s attempts to level the match and force extra time fell short as it lost in the Round of 16 for the second straight year.

“We spoke before the game that we wanted to keep the ball and create space,” said Nikolic. “It was great action from the whole team, from behind and in the finishing from (Aleksandar) Katai, (Schweinsteiger), and of course who made that final pass. For me, it was like he scored – it was an amazing pass from him.”

The Fire don’t continue in the competition until July 18 when they host USL side Louisville City in the quarterfinals, but they’ll hope to use this win to make a run toward getting back to playoff position in MLS, starting with an away match at Seattle on Saturday. They currently sit in seventh in the Eastern Conference, level with Orlando City in points with 19 but with five wins to Orlando’s six.

After winning in a stadium where Atlanta United have generally enjoyed an advantage, and in front of a USOC record crowd, Fire coach Veljko Paunovic hopes that it can give his team an extra push, both in the Open Cup and in MLS play.

“We achieved something that not many teams have done here – winning at this beautiful venue,” he said. “For our club, the tradition for fighting for the Open Cup means a lot, and getting this win today…I believe we are slowly getting to the point to play the way we played last year.”

A nail-biter to the final whistle https://t.co/1RMevHXwuL
