Bear Bryant and the Alabama Crimson Tide are associated with the type of football normally played in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, but this weekend the other game of football will hold court at the University of Alabama Recreational Center. Eight amateur teams will compete to determine which two will represent the USASA’s Region III in this summer’s Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The New York Pancyprian Freedoms and the Brooklyn Italians are back in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup after victories in the USASA Region I semifinals. The Freedoms will make their fourth Open Cup appearance in the Professional Era (1995-present), while the Italians, a two-time Open Cup champion, are making their first appearance since they won it all in 1991.
Arizona Sahuaros qualify for 3rd straight US Open Cup, Ambassadors from Bay Area to make their debut
After an exhausting five games in three days, the Arizona Sahuaros will make their third straight Open Cup appearance, while the Bay Area Ambassadors have not only punched their ticket to the Open Cup but won the entire Region IV tournament.
Detroit United, KC Athletics win high-scoring shootouts to qualify for their first US Open Cup
After 16 goals and two penalty kick shootouts, the USASA has booked their first two teams for the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Detroit United finished extra time tied 5-5 with 402 Academy, but emerged victorious in a PK shootout, while the KC Athletics finished overtime locked up at 3-3 before winning their own PK contest. Both teams are first time qualifiers to the tournament.
12 teams from California, Arizona and Washington to battle for 2 Region IV Open Cup spots
2010 US Open Cup qualification is set for USASA Region IV, and it will take place during the weekend of May 21-23 in Sacramento, California. Qualifying will be slightly different from previous years, as there are 12 entrants to the competition instead of eight. Three groups of four will compete for the right to play in the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
