2010 US Open Cup Third Round: Houston outlasts Miami FC 1-0

The Houston Dynamo defeated Miami FC of the USSF Second Division on a Lovel Palmer late goal, and held leading Open Cup scorer Paulo Araujo, Jr. scoreless.

Houston started quickly, dominating the first ten minutes, however Araujo had Miami on the counterattack quickly. He had two shots in a 5 minute span, however Dynamo keeper Tally Hall kept both shots out of the net. Play evened out, and neither team could capitalize on their chances in the half.

Houston gained more attacking chances in the second half, however Miami keeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell proved up to the task, including blocking a Penalty Kick from the Dynamo’s Richard Mulrooney at 50′. However, 80 minutes into the match, Houston’s Dominic Oduro got a pass into a streaking Palmer, a halftime sub, who slid the ball underneath Patterson-Sewell.

Miami quickly counterattacked, as Abe Cunningham, a former Dynamo player, quickly came back with a shot, but Hall was able to save it. Miami’s comeback was squashed, however, as J.P. Rodrigues was given a second yellow card at 83′. This prompted Miami to go all-or-nothing, as midfielder Steven Cabas replaced defender Christiano Dias. This backfired, as Houston took advantage of the thin defense to control the rest of the game.

Houston will host fellow MLS side Chivas USA in the Quarterfinal Round on July 6. Miami’s Araujo finished his Open Cup campaign with 5 goals, three more than any player still in the tournament.

2010 US Open Cup Third Round: Charleston advances in PKs as Chicago can’t find net

After a scoreless two hours, the Chicago Fire’s scoreless woes continued as USL-2’s Charleston won the penalty shootout 3-0. Battery goalkeeper Tim Melia, on loan from MLS’s Real Salt Lake, was the star of the night, stopping all 8 of the Fire’s shots on goal, and adding a save in the shootout.

The Fire started several players not in the regular starting lineup, and the inexperience showed as Charleston dominated early play, Chicago only having one shot until 34′. Play was more even for the rest of the half, but neither team mounted any serious chances.

Chicago substituted two regulars to begin the second half, but still could not generate a goal, despite gaining an advantage over the Battery in play. The Fire got more chances in extra time, but Melia was equal to the challenge.

Melia would be up to the challenge in the penalty shootout, while things unravled for the Fire. Chicago captain Brian McBride, who subbed in at the beginning of extra time, kicked the first penalty shot well high of the goal, while the Battery’s Lamar Neagle was able to convert against Chicago keeper Sean Johnson. Melia saved Krzysztov Krol’s kick, while Mike Zaher converted, putting the Fire down to the Battery 2-0. With the pressure on Wilman Conde to get the Fire on the board, he couldn’t pull through and hit the crossbar. This gave Charleston’s Ian Fuller the opportunity to give his team their fourth straight trip to the Quarterfinals, and put it in the net to do just that.

Charleston will head north to play Columbus on July 6, attempting to make the Semifinals for the second time in three years.

2010 US Open Cup Third Round: Crew advance on stoppage time goal

Columbus Crew forward Steven Lenhart broke a 1-1 tie with a goal four minutes into stoppage time to send the Crew into the quarterfinals over the Rochester Rhinos of the USSF Second Division.

Columbus took control early on, and broke through first. Eddie Gaven crossed a corner into position, and Andy Iro headed the ball past Scott Vallow for a 1-0 lead. The Crew couldn’t capitalize on their dominance any further, and took the single goal into the half.

Rochester got going in the second half thanks to Darren Spicer, who subbed in for Ryan Heins at 62′. Spicer sparked the Rhinos immediately, and scored 7 minutes after coming in on a rocket from the edge off the box to tie the score at 1. The match continued evenly across the board until 84′ in, when Felix Motagalvan of the Rhinos tackled the Crew’s Emilio Renteria with his studs up, drawing a straight red card. This let Columbus take back control, and they pressed ahead hoping to avoid extra time. Four minutes of stoppage time were added, however it seemed that for all the Crew’s pressure, they were headed for extra time. That changed in an instant, as Eric Brunner’s long pass bounced off a Rhino defender and right to Lenhart, who capped the heroics with an edge-of-the-box shot that went through the right side of the net.

The Crew will host the Charleston Battery of USL-2 on Tuesday, July 6, attempting to avoid becoming the Battery’s second straight MLS victim.

2010 US Open Cup Third Round: DC United hold off Richmond 2-0

A ten minute spurt to begin the second half was all DC United needed to defeat the Richmond Kickers of USL-2 2-0 in the Third Round of the US Open Cup. Jaime Moreno got the ball past Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascal at 47′, and Santino Quaranta followed suit at 56′.

United held possession through most of the first half, but the Kickers’ defense held firm, and the game was scoreless at halftime. Richmond appeared to gain control at the start of the second half, winning a corner kick in the 47th minute. However, Quaranta, a late first half sub, won control of the ball and fed it deep to Thabiso Khumalo, who hit a perfect pass for Moreno to slot the ball in the left side to give DC a 1-0 lead.

Richmond tried to mount a counterattack, however, an offside call against Edison Elcock ended their chance to equalize. Moments later, Quaranta dribbled into trouble in Richmond’s penalty box, but was able to find Moreno, who got the ball back to Quaranta to deflect it off a defender and into the net. Richmond was able to get a couple more chances in the next ten minutes, but could not capitalize, and DC maintained possession to close out the match.

DC United, who followed 2008’s Open Cup championship with a loss in last year’s finals to Seattle Sounders FC, will host another USL-2 team in the Harrisburg City Islanders on Tuesday, July 6 in the Quarterfinal Round.

2010 U.S. Open Cup Third Round: Chivas USA hold on, defeat Austin 1-0

Chivas USA scored early, then held on to defeat USSF Second Division team Austin Aztex, snapping two winless streaks. The Goats had not won a game in almost two months, and had not won an Open Cup match in seven years.

Chivas got on the board quickly, as Jesus Padilla took a pass from Osael Romero and notched the lower left corner of the goal in the 12th minute. Despite a few Aztex shots that required good saves from Goats keeper Zach Thornton, Chivas dominated the half.

Austin made their presence felt more in the second half, with Jamie Watson leading the surge. However, they were unable to get the ball past Thornton to equalize, heading home in the Third Round for the second consecutive year. Chivas USA will visit the Houston Dynamo in the Quarterfinals on July 6.

2010 US Open Cup Third Round: Galaxy send AC St. Louis home after 2-0 win

Despite solid defense from AC St. Louis, the Los Angeles Galaxy came away with a 2-0 win in the Third Round of the U.S. Open Cup. Both goals came more than an hour into the match, with Chris Klein scoring in the 69th minute and Juninho sending the ball into the back of the net at the 80 minute mark.

Both teams played evenly for the first twenty minutes, but after that, the Galaxy started to impose their will on the offensive end, but were unable to solve the defense. St. Louis, however, couldn’t get anything going, seemingly drawing offside flags every time they tried attacking, and the half ended scoreless.

The Galaxy kept attacking, and finally broke through when Klein took the pass from Tristian Bowen and slotted it home to give the home team the 1-0 lead. St. Louis sent in more offense right afterward, but in what was to be a bad omen, Chris Salvaggione was given a yellow card for stepping onto the pitch too early. LA kept attacking, and Juninho slipped the ball, sent by Eddie Lewis, past St. Louis keeper Alec Dufty. St. Louis was never able to mount any effective comeback, sending Los Angeles on to play either Seattle Sounders FC or the Portland Timbers Wednesday, July 7 in the Quarterfinals.

2010 US Open Cup Second Round: Portland’s Bright Dike wins Player of the Round after hat trick

Chinedu “Bright” Dike was voted the Player of the Round for the second round of the 2010 US Open Cup after netting three goals against the PDL’s Kitsap Pumas. Dike torched the middle third of the match, scoring his first goal 37 minutes into the game, and netted two more in the opening 20 minutes of the second half to give the Timbers a 4-0 lead and seal a game that ended 4-1.

The award is voted on by the staff of TheCup.us and a selected panel of members of the North American Soccer Reporters (www.soccerreporters.com).

After a rough 0-5-3 stretch in the USSF Second Division, the Timbers have used Open Cup play to propel themselves on a four game winning streak, with Dike scoring 4 goals in the last two games. However, he was quick to credit team chemistry for his success.

“The difference is really the team effort, not just about me,” said Dike, who goes by his middle name. “I think we’ve been playing together recently after we had several games when we ended up with losses or draws when we should have won. But when we are playing together better they have given me more chances to score, and that’s been the difference.”

The Timbers will host longtime rival Seattle Sounders FC in the Third Round on Wednesday, June 30, in their last match before Portland joins Seattle in MLS next year. The recent win streak has given Dike and his teammates plenty of confidence heading into the game.

“We’ve played well recently after having a series of results when we think we could have done better so this is a good time to be playing this match.”

2010 US Open Cup Second Round: Dike’s hat trick leads Timbers past Pumas, into rematch with Sounders

Bright Dike had a hat trick and lead the Portland Timbers to a 4-1 victory over the Kitsap Pumas in Bremerton, WA in the second round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The first 30 minutes the teams matched up fairly equally, until Alex Nimo’s corner in the 34th minute led to Ross Smith’s header to open the scoring for Portland. Dike attacked on the counterstrike to scorch the net just three minutes later. Kitsap was able to pressure the ball in the last five minutes of the half, but could not capitalize.

Two minutes into the second half, Dike found the net again, as Portland controlled the game almost the rest of the way. Dike had another score at 62 minutes, and it took Kitsap 87 minutes to finally establish themselves. Stephen Phillips found the net to restore some pride for Kitsap, avoiding their second consecutive shutout loss to Portland in the Open Cup.

Portland will host Seattle Sounders FC from MLS at PGE Park in Portland next Wednesday. The last time the two rivals met was in the third round of last year’s Open Cup when the Sounders prevailed 2-1 at PGE Park in Portland in front of the biggest crowd (16,382) for a non-final, non-doubleheader in the Professional Era (1995-present).
