2010 US Open Cup Quarterfinals: Sounders FC’s Nate Jaqua scores brace and Player of the Round

August 4, 2010 by J.T. Alwin

Nate Jaqua scored both goals in the Seattle Sounders FC’s 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy in the US Open Cup quarterfinals. The win not only sent Seattle to the semifinals for the second consecutive year as a MLS side (and fourth straight year under the Sounders banner), but also served as revenge against LA.

TheGalaxy had beaten Seattle 3-1 three days before in Los Angeles. Jaqua’s clutch performance earned him the Player of the Round for the quarterfinals.

The award is voted on by the staff of TheCup.us and a select panel of members of the North American Soccer Reporters (www.soccerreporters.com).

Jaqua edged Justin Braun of Chivas USA for the award, who scored a pair of goals in the Goats’ 3-1 win over the Houston Dynamo. Both Braun and Jaqua will face off with their respective teams in the final four, which will be held at Starfire Soccer Complex in Tukwila, Wash. The game will be played September 1 at 10 p.m. Eastern Time.

Jaqua was gracious enough to make time to talk with Matt Gaschk of SoundersFC.com about his performance:

How important was the 2-0 win over LA for the Sounders?

Jaqua: It was big. Especially since we just played them and lost to them down there , so there was a bit of revenge there. There was also the Open Cup – we’re the defending champions and it’s something we want to defend. It was good for us and got us some motivation going forward. We’re in the semifinals now, so were one game away from the final and another chance to bring another championship back to Seattle.

You had two goals in that game, how were they set up?

They were both good service. One was bouncing around and I was able to get my head on it. The other one, Miguel Montano put a good ball in. If you make good runs and get to the right spots and we get good service, we’re going to score a lot of goals.

You were fresh off an injury at that point. How important was it for your confidence to go into a game and get a couple of goals?

It was big. I was trying to carry that over a little bit and had a bit of a setback with the injury, so now I’m just trying to get going again.

How much did that help the team in starting the run that you’re on now?

I can’t really pinpoint what it was that got us playing better and playing more as a team, but that was one step in the right direction. It’s something that we are trying to build going forward every game. We’re still not playing to our potential. I think we can still improve and get better and have everybody more on the same page and be the team we can be. I don’t think we’re there yet, but we’ve definitely made some good steps in the right direction.

How close does this team feel to the one that won the US Open Cup last year?

We’re really close. We’ve got the game at home at Starfire again and that will be a big lift. It’s fun playing out there. We’re definitely close. It’s just a matter of getting out and playing at home against Chivas. If we play the way we can and get that win we’ll be in the final again and anything can happen then.

2010 US Open Cup Quarterfinals: Justin Braun’s brace powers Chivas USA past Houston, 3-1

Justin Braun of Chivas USA scored early and late, and the Goats defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-1 to reach their Open Cup Semifinals. The win was also their first at Houston’s Robertson Stadium.

However, the Dynamo were left in the dust in the second half as well. Ante Jazic split the Houson defense to give Michael Lahoud an easy finish at 65′ to double the Chivas lead. Houston finally managed to strike late, as Joseph Ngwenya rocketed a shot that got a piece of Dominc Oduro and between the posts. Braun ended any hope the Dynamo had of equalizing four minutes later, splitting through defenders and into the net.

Braun got Chivas going early, heading home a Mariano Trujillo pass in the fifth minute. The Goats pressed their advantage throughout the half, however Houston was able to hold their own defensively and kept the game 1-0 at the half. Photo: Houston Dynamo

Chivas USA will await the winner of the Los Angeles Galaxy/Seattle Sounders FC match on July 7.

Lamar Hunt US Open Cup quarterfinals trivia

July 4, 2010 by Josh Hakala

The quarterfinal round of the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is fast approaching and with that, TheCup.us is testing your knowledge. For each team taking part in the round of eight, we have a related trivia question. The answers will be posted periodically. Check our twitter account (@usopencup) for updates.

The Charleston Battery don't often stray far from Blackbaud Stadium in US Open Cup play. Photo: Allison Andrews | SoccerCityUSA.com

Including the 2010 Quarterfinals, the Charleston Battery will have played 34 US Open Cup matches. How many of those games have NOT been played at Blackbaud Stadium?
(A) 12
(B) 10
(C) 7
(D) 15

ANSWER: (B) 10

The upcoming Quarterfinal match at Columbus Crew Stadium will be just the second time the Battery have played two Cup matches away from Blackbaud in the same tournament. The only other time this happened was in 2004, when the Battery played the Rochester Rhinos at Frontier Field and the Chicago Fire at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville, IL.

Which Los Angeles area team has made the most appearances in the US Open Cup Quarterfinals?
(A) Maccabee AC
(B) Los Angeles Kickers
(C) Los Angeles Galaxy
(D) A & C

ANSWER: (D) A & C

The Galaxy’s appearance in this year’s quarterfinal round puts them even with five-time Open Cup champs Maccabee AC with eight appearances (1973, 1975-1978, 1980-1983) in the final 8. Maccabee only lost one of those Quarterfinal appearances, another mark the Galaxy will look to equal this year.

What major controversy took place at the 1983 Open Cup Semifinals and Final in Houston in 1983?

(A) One of the teams in the semifinals were later found to use ineligible players
(B) The Region IV Final was replayed the night before the semifinals due to a court injunction
(C) Bad weather forced the winner of one semifinal to play the Final on the same day
(D) The stadium the games were scheduled at was unavailable, forcing games to be played at a local park

ANSWER: (B) The Region IV Final was replayed due to a court injunction.

On May 29, the Seattle’s FOE Eagles had beaten Greek American A.C. of San Francisco 1-0 in the Region IV final, but were later disqualified for using an ineligible player. The Eagles managed to get a court-ordered replay of the match for July 1, the night before the Open Cup semifinals in Houston, Texas. By midnight, the Eagles walked away with another 1-0 win on a goal by Peter Fewing. John and Jim Rally, owners of the Greek American team announced they would sue the USSF, and threatened to have their players take the field against NY Pancyprian Freedoms in the semifinals. The Rallys were upset that no USSF officials were present in Seattle for the court hearing, and planned to sue the USSF for the expense of traveling to Houston, which they estimated at $50,000. The Eagles went on to lose their semifinal match to the Pancyprian Freedoms 4-2.

Who is the all-time leading US Open Cup goalscorer for the Columbus Crew?

(A) Jeff Cunningham
(B) Edson Buddle
(C) Brian McBride
(D) John Wilmar Perez

ANSWER: (C) Brian McBride.

The MLS and the U.S. National team veteran has scored seven goals for the Columbus Crew in Open Cup play over three tournaments. Three came during the Crew’s run to the 1998 final, and he had two each in 1999 and 2002.

DC United holds the Professional Era record for consecutive US Open Cup home games.
(A) True
(B) False

ANSWER: (B) False.

The Pro Era record is currently held by the Rochester Rhinos, who played 11 straight Open Cup games at home (Frontier Field and PAETEC Park) between 2004 and 2008. The streak could have been 17 games between 2004 and 2010, except it was interrupted twice by, you guessed it, DC United. DC United will tie the Rhinos once their Quarterfinal game with Harrisburg is official. The last time DC United did not play a home Open Cup game was in 2007, against the very same Harrisburg City Islanders. A game that they lost 1-0.

What year did a team from Seattle make its first appearance in the US Open Cup?
(A) 1965
(B) 1963
(C) 1967
(D) 1962

ANSWER: (A) 1965.

The Hungarian Soccer Club was Seattle’s first Open Cup representative. It took part in San Francisco’s qualifying tournament that year, winning it’s first game against Teutonia AAC (3-2), before falling to eventual San Fran winners Greek American AC, 2-1. In following tournaments, the Seattle representative (only one team entered from Seattle for a number of years) would face the San Francisco winner for the right to play the Los Angeles qualifying champion.

How many times have two Los Angeles area clubs reached the US Open Cup Quarterfinals in the same year?
(A) 3
(B) 1
(C) 2
(D) 0

ANSWER: (B) 1
2010 is the first year this has happened. In pre-Pro era Open Cup tournaments, the Los Angeles area teams played off until one team was left. That team faced the winner of the San Francisco knockout games (or the San Francisco/Seattle winner in the late 60s/early 70s). This game was usually one half of the Western semifinals (i.e., National Quarterfinals).

Who is the Harrisburg City Islanders all-time leading US Open Cup goalscorer?
(A) Geoff Bloes
(B) David Schoffeld
(C) Steve Fisher
(D) Chad Severs

ANSWER: (A) Geoff Bloes
Bloes became the City Islanders leader with his goal against the Long Island Rough Riders in this year’s second round. Bloes’ four goals is one ahead of Fisher and Schoffeld.

Nate Jaqua scored two second-half goals to give the Seattle Sounders a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday night in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals.

The win sends Seattle, the defending Cup champion, into the semifinals against Chivas USA on Sept. 1. Chivas earned its spot Tuesday with a 3-1 victory against the Houston Dynamo.

Late in the 50th minute, rookie forward Miguel Montano took a shot that bounced off the underside of the crossbar, but Jaqua was right there to head it into a wide-open net.

Midway through the 62nd minute, a Montano cross from the left side floated right to Jaqua on the far side of the box, and his diving header beat Galaxy goalkeeper Josh Saunders to the back left corner.

Terry Boss earned the shutout for Seattle.

While the Sounders have struggled to a 4-8-3 record in MLS play this season, they now have won eight straight U.S. Open Cup games, including six last season when they won it all as an expansion team for the first cup of any kind in franchise history.

Los Angeles, which has dominated MLS play this year with an 11-1-3 record — including a 3-1 rout of Seattle last Sunday in Carson, Calif. — was trying to make the Open Cup semifinals for the seventh time in club history.

Although it was the quarterfinal stage, both teams kept most of their starters on the sidelines. The Galaxy’s two U.S. World Cup players, Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle, didn’t even dress for the game. Buddle, the leading scorer in MLS, had the first goal last Sunday in the Galaxy’s win over Seattle.

Seattle outshot Los Angeles 21-10, including 14-3 in the second half.
