2010 US Open Cup First Round: Riverhounds defeat Detroit United, 2-0

June 18, 2010 by Josh Hakala

Pittsburgh Riverhounds Communications

On a humid Tuesday evening at Chartiers Valley Stadium, the Riverhounds defeated the Detroit United Soccer Club of the USASA to advance into the second round of the US Open Cup.

The first half appeared to be a battle of the midfield as each team tried to figure out the other’s style of play. The Hounds started to cause problems for Detroit when a long diagonal ball by Adam Gazda played outside midfielder Matt Tuttle in behind the defense. He beat his man to the goal line, but his cross got deflected for a corner.

Both teams battled for the ball off the corner kick. Detroit was holding strong, thwarting many chances, but not for long. The constant pressure by the Hounds had Detroit scrambling causing a defender to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line with his hand. A penalty kick was awarded in the 35th minute, and Alex Weekes stepped up confidently. Weekes froze the goalie with a stutter step and tucked the ball into the right side of the net putting the Hounds up 1-0.

In the remaining minutes of the first half, there was a free kick from about 30 yards out. With the crowd on their feet, Adam Gazda struck a laser of a shot into the upper left corner of the goal, putting the Hounds up 2 goals going into the half.

The Hounds started off strong in the second half to put the game away. The first scoring opportunity of the half occurred when Riverhounds defender Nate Salsi played a diagonal ball to Matt Tuttle. His shot was deflected and Detroit regained possession.

In the 51st minute, Detroit player Fernando Gatica received a caution for a dangerous tackle. The Hounds remained level headed and continued to play hard and fight for another goal.

In the 52nd minute, Niko Katic, Gazda and Weekes combined on a third man run to create another shot on goal. The Detroit goaltender stifled another attack when Lee Kouadio Tobey deflected a ball off the crossbar and was cleared out of danger by Detroit.

The final minutes of the game were an even match between the two teams, ending in a score of 2-0 with the Hounds on top.

The Hounds will travel to take on the Rochester Rhinos next week in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup.

2010 US Open Cup First Round: Rhinos beat shorthanded Dayton Dutch Lions 2-0

June 18, 2010 by Josh Hakala

Dayton Dutch Lions Press Release

Dutch Lions give up 2 early goals in defeat at Rochester 2-0.

In the Dutch Lions first-ever US Open Cup match, the Rochester Rhinos were too much for the under-manned Lions, taking a 2-0 win over the Dayton-based PDL team. The Lions gave up two early goals, before taking over in the second half; unfortunately it was too late for the Lions.

The Dutch Lions were entering the game only being able to play 5 international players, and still were without core midfielders Bret Jones and Johan Wigger. But from the opening whistle, the Lions worked hard and took shape having several opportunities to land punches to the Rhinos goal.

The Rhinos got busy early on their home turf in the 14th and 18th minutes. The 18th minute resulting in their first goal. A miscommunication in the back, found Tino Nunez left alone. With an awkward bounce on the turf, Lions GK Moens read the bounce wrong, and got caught too far out as Nunez flicked it over Moens to make it 1-0.

Just 10 minutes later, in the 29th minute, another Rhinos flash down the right side found DDL Defender Kyle Segebart tracking back, and a physical comeback resulted in the Rhino striker falling down, as the referee issued a PK. Jamie Franks would take the PK as Moens dove the correct way, but couldn’t reach it as the Rhinos went up 2-0.

The Dutch Lions finally got into the game 30 minutes in with some great offensive attacks, as their game came to them with many opportunities. The biggest coming in the 44th minute when a great ball was played through to George Davis IV. Davis was battling a defender, pushed a shot with his in-step as the ball would hit off the far post.

The second half found the Dutch Lions on the attack for the majority of the time. With the Lions holding most of the possession on the Rhinos, the Lions would have several chances. Two big chances came in the 63rd and 76th minutes, by McCarthy and Bas Ent as Rhinos’ GK Vallow had to make a one-footed save.

In the 80th minute, Davis had a look from 20 yards out, as it deflected of a Rhinos defender on goal, but Vallow made a diving save to keep the game scoreless for the Dayton-side.

The Lions found themselves out-playing Rhinos the last 20 minutes, with possession and high-pressure by putting 8 men forward. The Dutch Lions were only 2 shots behind the Rhinos in the total shot count, 12-10.

It was a bittersweet performance for the Dutch Lions in its first-ever appearance in the Open Cup, as the Lions are in its inaugural season in the USL, qualifying for the Open Cup undefeated; yet unable to pickup the tough road result in Rochester.

The Lions will leave Rochester with its next goal in mind- Qualifying for the PDL Playoffs and a run to the PDL Championships. The Lions will swing by Cleveland for a match against the Internationals on Thursday in Medina, OH at 8:00pm.

2010 US Open Cup, Round 1: RailHawks win battle of North Carolina, 1-0 vs. Charlotte Eagles

June 17, 2010 by Josh Hakala

Charlotte Eagles (USL-2) 0 : 1 Carolina RailHawks (D2)
7:05 p.m. ET – WakeMed Soccer Park; Cary, N.C.

Scoring Summary
Carolina: Sallieu Bundu 24’ (Franks)

From CarolinaRailHawks.com

CARY, N.C. (Tuesday, June 15, 2010) – The Carolina RailHawks defeated the Charlotte Eagles 1-0 on Tuesday night to advance to the second round of the US Open Cup. Sallieu Bundu scored the lone goal in the 23rd minute assisted by Floyd Franks. The RailHawks will travel to Charleston to face the Battery in the second round on Tuesday, June 22 but not before returning to league play on Saturday June 19 against Crystal Palace at WakeMed Soccer Park.

“I am very pleased that we are able to advance to the second round of the tournament.” Said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. “I would’ve liked to capitalize a little better on our chances but overall I am happy with the result.”

After a half hour lightning delay, the game started with both teams sizing each other up. The RailHawks started to attack more after about ten minutes and almost came close in the 14th minute when Matt Watson cleared a ball from the sideline with a spectacular slide and brought it into the box but the ensuing cross was deflected by a Charlotte defender. Mark Schulte tried a few minutes later in the 17th minute with a shot from the top left corner of the box easily saved by Eagles’ keeper Brian Edwards. The goal came after a couple of efforts by Daniel Paladini in the 18th and 21st minutes. In the 23rd, Watson sent Floyd Franks down the right side with the ball and, after beating his defender, Franks crossed it into the middle of the box where Sallieu Bundu was waiting to tap it in for the lead. The RailHawks defended the lead well and  the Eagles only got dangerous in the 29th minute with a point blank shot by forward Ogunseye easily saved by Reed.

Reed would prove to be the hero of the match as he was called into play several times during the second half. Floyd Franks and Sallieu Bundu tried another one-two in the 59th minute but the ball ended in the side netting. In the 61st minute Paladin ihad a cracking shot from the top of the 18 yard box that was sived again by Edwards. The Eagles had some clear chances towards the end of the match with Joel Delass and Miguell Ferrer but Reed was ready on every ball.

“it was a fantastic battle,” said RailHawks keeper Eric Reed. “Charlotte has great players who bring everything they have and it is always great to play against them. At first I felt they sat back and let the heat subside in the first half. In the second half they put a lot of pressure on us but we were able to control and come away with the win.”

Next the RailHawks return to league play on Saturday June 19 as they host Crystal Palace Baltimore at 7 p.m. It will be “Bark in the Park” night and special dog tickets will benefit the Wake County SPCA. It will also be our Father’s day celebration and all fathers in attendance will receive two passes to the 10th anniversary of the SAS Championship in September. 2010 US Open Cup, Round 1: Richmond Kickers avoid PKs, score late in OT to beat Crystal Palace Baltimore

June 17, 2010 by Josh Hakala

Crystal Palace Baltimore (D2) 0 : 1 (AET) Richmond Kickers (USL-2)
7 p.m. ET – University of Richmond Stadium; Richmond, Va.

Scoring Summary
Richmond: Matthew Delicate (Stephen Nsereko) – 119th

With a flair for the dramatic, the Richmond Kickers pulled out a 1-0 extra time win over Crystal Palace Baltimore on a goal from Matthew Delicate just one minute before the match was to go to a penalty shootout.

Delicate nearly gave Richmond an early lead twice. In the 13th minute, Delicate headed Sascha Gorres pass on goal, but Baltimore goalkeeper Even Bush was equal to the challenge. Five minutes later, he took a shot from a Mike Burke pass, but was again denied by Bush. Matthew Mbuta almost gave Baltimore the opening goal in the 76th minute, when the Cameroonian striker attempted a bicycle kick, though his shot was sent directly at Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale.

Scoreless through full time and nineteen minutes of extra time, penalty kicks looked certain. Delicate put an end to all
of that with a header six yards out, meeting a pass from Stephen Nsereko to advance the Kickers to the second round.

2010 US Open Cup, Round 1: Monarchs reign supreme, beating Reading United in overtime 2-0

June 17, 2010 by Josh Hakala

Real Maryland FC Monarchs (USL-2) 2 : 1 (AET) Reading United A.C. (PDL)
7:30 p.m. ET – Don Thomas Stadium; Reading, Pa.

Scoring Summary
Reading: Andrew Wenger 57’
Real Maryland: Nick Paterson 70’
Real Maryland: Jyler Noviello 98’

The Real Maryland Monarchs needed extra time to get past the PDL’s Reading United AC 2-1 at Reading, Pennsylvania. Reading nearly took an early lead when ten minutes into the game, forward CJ Sapong fed Billy Schuler down the right side, whose shot was deflected wide by Monarch’s goalkeeper Brian Levey. On the ensuing corner kick, United again just missed an early lead. Once again Levey deflected a shot away, this time from Eric Schoenle.

Reading finally broke the deadlock in the 57th minute. Luke Mulholland was fouled just outside the penalty area, and Schoenle headed home the ensuing Andrew Wenger free kick for a 1-0 lead. Real Maryland only needed 13 minutes to respond however. On just their second shot on goal of the game, Nick Paterson converted a free kick to tie the score.

The Monarchs took the lead for good eight minutes into extra time when Ben Hunter’s free kick was headed in by Jyler Noviello.

2010 US Open Cup Round 1: Rough Riders win New York battle, oust Pancyprian Freedoms 2-0

June 17, 2010 by Josh Hakala

NY Pancyprian Freedoms (USASA) 0:2 Long Island Rough Riders (PDL)
Cy Donnelly Stadium; South Huntington, N.Y.

The Long Island Rough Riders earned a rare US Open Cup victory, 2-0 against the USASA’s New York Pancyprian Freedoms. The Rough Riders, making their fifth Open Cup appearance in their 17-year club history, picked up their first tournament win since 1997 when they upset the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer back when they were a member of the A-League (now USSF 2nd Division). Now the Rough Riders compete in the Premier Development League and brought an unbeaten league record (4-0-2) into their match with the Freedoms, a 3-time Open Cup champion (1980, 1982, 1983).

Long Island opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Ben Arikian sent a cross to former USL pro Danny Kramer who put it past the Freedoms’ goalkeeper. After halftime, the PDL side would add a second when former Columbus Crew player Alex Grendi fired home a loose ball in front of the Freedoms’ goal. The ball found it’s way into the box thanks to a cross by Kramer.

Long Island will move on to the second round where they will travel to City Island to take on the Harrisburg City Islanders on June 22.
