Severe weather brought the US Open Cup third round match between the Philadelphia Union and the Rochester Rhinos to a halt in the first half, but that was about the only thing that was able to slow the Union offense down. Josue Martinez scored first, and Freddy Adu added two more to give the Union a 3-0 victory over their USL Pro opponents.

2011 US Open Cup qualifying updates: MLS play-in tournament underway
For the fifth year in a row, Major League Soccer will conduct a play-in tournament to narrow the number of teams that enter the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Beginning on June 28, eight MLS clubs will join the 98th edition of the tournament in the third round, with the top six MLS teams based on the 2010 league standings automatically qualifying. The 10 remaining US-based clubs are left to fight for the last two spots.

Down 2-1 and playing with 10 men, Brian Carroll equalized late in the second overtime for Philadelphia, but DC United would emerge victorious in the penalty kick tiebreaker. United will return to the Maryland Soccerplex to host the New England Revolution in the next round on April 26.
New York Red Bulls edge Philadelphia Union 2-1 to move on in US Open Cup qualifying
Conor Chinn scored his first two professional goals for New York to lead the way, but the story of the match was the goal and, more importantly, the injury to Sebastien Le Toux. The Red Bulls will host New England in the next round on May 12.
