The New England Revolution celebrated the 20th anniversary of the opening of Gillette Stadium in style, routing Cincinnati FC 5-1 in Round 4 of the US Open Cup that saw Carles Gil score the first hat trick in the history of the competition for his club.

Cincinnati opened the scoring in the 12th minute, when a leading pass through a gap in the central defenders from Haris Medunjanin found a streaking Alvaro Barreal, who coolly slotted it home for his third goal of the tournament.

While they seemed to have the momentum early, Cincinnati’s goal marked their only shot on goal of the first half. New England got off to a slow start — tallying only one shot in the first half-hour of the game — but luck began to change in the 33rd minute, when Arnor Traustason was taken down by Cinncinati defender Zico Bailey in the box for a penalty. Gil calmly flicked the penalty past the keeper a minute later to tie the game at 1-1.

Gil found the scorer’s sheet again three minutes later. In the 37th minute he connected with a pass from Tommy McNamara at the top of the box and put it past a diving Kenneth Vermeer.

“If we went into halftime 1-0, I think it would have been a very challenging second half,” Arena said. “It was important to get the first goal, and the second one allowed us to relax a little bit.”

The Revolution carried their momentum into the second half. In the 47th minute, Polish national Adam Buksa sent a cross from Brandon Bye off the crossbar and into the net to extend the Revolution lead to two. This was Buksa’s first career goal in the US Open Cup, but marked the sixth consecutive game in all competitions where Buksa scored.

In the 54th minute, Gil made Revolution history as he scored the first hat trick in the club’s Open Cup history. His bending shot from the top of the box found the top left corner, giving Brandon Bye his second assist of the night. GIl also became the first Spanish player to score a hat trick in the Modern Era of the competition. His three goals put him in a tie for second in goals scored in this year’s competition.

“I don’t think we had a good first 30 minutes, we were a little bit slow and we didn’t want to tackle. After the first goal, we started to play good and win tackles,” Gil said. “We now have four more games to win a trophy.

“We are focused on this competition and also in the MLS.”

Even with the score at 4-1, the Revolution continued to pour it on. Four minutes after Gil’s hat trick, Adam Buksa found the back of the net with a powerful, bending shot fired from five yards outside the top right of the box, with his momentum bringing him away from goal. Buksa was subbed off a few minutes later, preventing him from possibly obtaining the second hat trick of the night.

Vermeer struggled to perform in his first start for Cincinnati in 2022; he allowed five goals on seven shots on target. His New England counterpart, Djordje Petrovic, fared better in his first career start for the Revolution; he made two saves and allowed one goal. The 22-year-old Serbian national was signed from FK Čukarički in early April.

This was the first meeting between the Revolution and Cincinnati in the competition. New England has reached the final on three occasions, winning the Cup in 2007. Cincinnati’s best run in the tournament came in 2017 when they still played in the United Soccer League; they reached the semifinals that year.

The Revolution’s 5-1 win marked their largest margin of victory in US Open Cup play since 2013, when they defeated the Rochester Rhinos by the same scoreline. New England now moves on to the Round of 16, where they will be grouped geographically into a group of four.

2022 US Open Cup Round 4: NYCFC trio helps knock Rochester New York out, 3-1

May 12, 2022 by Julian Cardillo

New York City FC fought off a challenge from Rochester New York FC in Round 4 of the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, emerging as 3-1 victors in front of 1,513 Wednesday night at Belson Stadium on the St. John’s University campus.

At times, Rochester — a tournament entrant from MLS Next Pro, the third-tier league in American professional soccer — looked more dangerous than the reigning MLS Cup champions, threatening with dynamic runs down the flanks and quick counters.

But after successfully absorbing stretches of Rochester pressure, NYCFC opened the scoring in the 23rd minute.

The decisive play started on the right flank with Gabriel Pereira, who cut to his left foot and floated a beckoning cross toward the top of the penalty area for an oncoming Thiago Andrade. Free of a marker by several feet, Thiago struck the feed with a one-time lob and sent the ball looping past goalkeeper Phillip Ejimadu and into the back of the net.

— New York City FC (@newyorkcityfc) May 11, 2022

It was Thiago’s fifth goal this year across all competitions.

Eight minutes later, a goalkeeping howler doubled NYCFC’s advantage. Ejimadu lingered on a back pass just long enough for Heber to create calamity; the goalkeeper’s botched clearance never left the box, instead caroming off Heber’s thigh and bouncing into the net for the 2-0 lead.

On a different day, and with slightly more precision, Rochester may have produced a historic USOC upset. The visitor’s matched NYCFC’s physicality throughout the night and started with a higher tempo, producing the game’s first two scoring chances.

Raymond Drai rolled an effort just wide of the far post after finding space on the right side of the box inside the first 38 seconds, and Gibran Rayo narrowly missed an open net off Christian Wood’s 17th minute feed.

Jesus Batiz scored what would become a consolation goal for Rochester in the third minute of first-half stoppage time, poking a loose ball past NYCFC goalkeeper Luis Barraza.

“I think we felt a little bit under it in the first 15 minutes…backs were against the wall a bit,” said NYCFC defender Kevin O’Toole, who made his first team appearance of the year. “Thiago’s finish was amazing, and that really gave us a lift. I think we felt more comfortable after that, we were able to possess it through the midfield, we got our outside backs high, and that sort of took the pressure off a little bit.

“Then we were able to get the second with Heber pressing really hard on the goalkeeper. It was a good way to get into halftime with those two goals.”

NYCFC limited Rochester throughout the second half, their third goal arriving in the 76th minute as Maxime Chanot headed in Santiago Rodriguez’s corner.

Ejimadu partially redeemed himself for his error on NYCFC’s second goal by saving Gedion Zelalem’s penalty after referee Ernie Constantine awarded a spot kick for a late foul on Andres Jasson.

More late-game drama ensued, as both teams had players sent off. For NYCFC it was Pereira — who received his second yellow in a fracas inside the penalty area following the penalty save — and Rochester’s Preston Popp in added time for a late hit near the benches.

NYCFC, which extended its unbeaten run across all competitions to six with the win, advances to the Round of 16 for the second time in club history.

“These games are always hard,” NYCFC head coach Ronny Deila said. “Rochester was physical, they were organized and they gave everything. It was a tough game, but I think the boys did the job. They were fighting, we got three goals, and we win in the end.”

While NYCFC has never advanced past the quarterfinals, clubs representing the state of New York have had an impressive record: Since the tournament’s inception in 1913, 26 New York-based teams have won the trophy – the most of any state – with the most recent being the Rochester Raging Rhinos (ceased operations in 2017 as the precursor to Rochester New York FC) in 1999. The other 25 teams were based in New York City, but the Big Apple has not had a team lift the trophy since the Brooklyn Italians in 1991.

2022 US Open Cup Round 4 Review: Three underdogs left, another prize money winner, but MLS in command

The Fourth Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is nearly complete with one more weather-delayed match yet to be played. However, the other 15 matches are in the books and when the dust settled, 12 Major League Soccer teams punched their ticket to the Round of 16, along with three lower division clubs (two USL Championship teams, one USL League One team).

Minnesota United will host the Colorado Rapids on Thursday afternoon (2 p.m. ET) to complete the 16th and final entry of the Fifth Round. Heavy rain, wind and lightning washed out Wednesday night’s game in St. Paul, Minn.

In a battle of the two remaining USL League One sides, Union Omaha blanked Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC to advance. Combined with the LA Galaxy’s road win over California United FC, Union Omaha won the $25,000 prize money as the third division team that advanced the furthest.

Union Omaha, the defending USL League One champions, are joined by the Sacramento Republic FC (USL Championship) and Louisville City FC (USL Championship) as the only remaining lower division teams.

There were plenty of dramatic games in Round 4, including the Houston Dynamo’s late winner to knock out San Antonio FC.

Two games went to penalty kick shootouts with Louisville City traveling to the Motor City and eliminating fellow USL Championship side Detroit City FC, and the San Jose Earthquakes outlasting the CONCACAF Champions League winners Seattle Sounders in one of the longest PK shootouts of the Modern Era.

Two-goal comebacks are pretty rare in the Modern Era of the US Open Cup, but for the first time since 1995, there were two of them in the same round. Sporting Kansas City rallied to beat FC Dallas on Tuesday and Nashville SC came back to beat Atlanta United FC on Wednesday.

The draw for the Round of 16 will take place on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. ET. The bracket for the remainder of the tournament will be set, so teams will know their path to the championship game.

New York City FC welcomed Rochester New York FC of MLS Next Pro to Belson Stadium and came away 3-1 winners to advance to the Round of 16.

Thiago Andrade scored a highlight goal to open the scoring for NYCFC in the 23rd minute. The Fourth Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup went off without a hitch for the Los Angeles Football Club as steady possession and set plays led them to a 2-0 victory over the Portland Timbers.

“We’re ecstatic to be a round further in the Open Cup, Portland is a tough team to beat,” said LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo. “I think for the most part we were satisfied with how we played. I think our matchplay was correct and I think they implemented it well. In these tight games, plays or set pieces are kind of what unlock the match and results.”

As the whistle sounded at the beginning of the first half, both teams were eager to capitalize on any opportunity they created to be the first on the board.

LAFC would have its first shot of the match in the fourth minute but would ultimately end up being blocked by Portland goalkeeper David Bingham.

Another close save was made by Portland would follow in the 13th minute when a shot from LAFC would brush off the fingers of Bingham and was deflected away from the goal.

Time would pass in the first half with both teams keeping a steady possession. The intensity on the field slowly would increase as each team continued to change the score, but both teams displayed great defensive work stopping any opportunity.

It would be in the 32nd minute when LAFC’s Kwadwo Opuku entered from behind the defensive line and a short pass in front of the goalie was completed by his teammate Cristiano Arango; putting LAFC in the lead.

“I get a chance to look at Ryan pass so at that point I tried to find the first post and the ball was set and flicked it with the heel and the rest was the goal. It was amazing,” Arango said.

The remaining minutes of the half carried on with both teams playing almost a 50/50 possession and strong defensive lines. The first half would end with LAFC still in the lead, 1-0.

As the second half was underway, the momentum of the game seemed to increase just a bit for Portland as they trailed behind.

In the 49th minute, Portland would find themselves in a close opportunity to even the score when a shot right in the center of the goalie box would be inches away from Nathan Fogaca. However, a collision would occur between Fogaca and LAFC goalie Maxime Crepeau who stepped out to clear the ball from his zone.

By the 54th minute, LAFC would find themselves lengthening their lead. A subtle pass through the middle of the goalie box would end with Mamadou Fall seeing the pass and taking the chance to finish the play.

“What first came to my mind was they have been telling us to play those balls any chance we get,” Fall said.

LAFC reigns 2-0 over the Portland with less than 40 minutes remaining in the match.

— LAFC (@LAFC) May 11, 2022

With fouls adding up throughout the match and riling up both teams, a yellow card would finally be called in the 60th minute and awarded to LAFC’s Danny Musovski.

It wouldn’t be long until another yellow card was shown on the field. The card was awarded to Portland’s Fogaca in the 65th minute.

In the 73rd minute, Portland would try their luck as they created two opportunities in front of LAFC’s goal, but Crepeau deflected each occurrence leaving LAFC with possession.

Portland had just under 20 minutes left to create a comeback but LAFC’s defense would hold its shape. Crepeau would finish with six saves to earn a clean sheet in his Open Cup debut.

The match would conclude in LAFC’s favor, 2-0, and push them through to the Round of 16 for the third tournament in a row.

The draw for the next round of the US Open cup will be held on Thursday, May 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

2022 US Open Cup Round 4: New York Red Bulls dominate young, rotated D.C. United

In a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Round of 32 matchup between two original MLS rivals, the New York Red Bulls came out on top, 3-0, against their hated foe D.C. United at Audi Field on Tuesday night.

Luquinhas, John Tolkin, and Zach Ryan bagged goals against the three-time US Open Cup champions. Ryan Meara was rarely tested in goal, making one save to earn the clean sheet. Despite their close proximity, this was just the third all-time meeting between the two rivals, and the first since 2006.

Red Bull, after some nerves early in the game, settled into the game around the 15th minute and would go on to dominate United’s young and heavily-rotated lineup.

To start the game, things turned on its head for Red Bull and their manager Gerhard Struber, as their club captain & USMNT CB Aaron Long needed to be subbed off after 10 minutes due to “stiffness” in his calf. Uruguayan youth national Lucas Monzon would be first off the bench and even with his lack of minutes with the first team, looked the part for Red Bull in their excellent backline.

Other then the Long injury, the first half was a real snoozer. That would be until the third minute of first half stoppage time where Red Bull would find the breakthrough just before the half time whistle.

A little over the top ball from Sean Nealis to Frankie Amaya would be the moment to free up space for players making secondary runs towards the box. As Amaya turned back, he found Dru Yearwood in acres of space as the Englishmen rumbled forward.

With the focus on him, Yearwood toe poked the ball into the path of Luquinhas, who got inside his defender and then ripped one far post on DC keeper Rafael Romo to give Red Bull a 1-0 lead and all the momentum going into the locker room.

Even though they were down 1-0 going into the break, D.C. deserves some credit. D.C. heading into the game against Red Bull heavily rotated their team. With a young & hungry team, who were looking to impress manager Chad Ashton, D.C. were running with Red Bull stride for stride in the first half. Unfortunately for them, their quality would be their downfall against an almost full XI from Red Bull.

In the second half, things would turn for the worse if you are a fan of D.C., and pretty quickly. Just three minutes into the second half, left back John Tolkin doubled Red Bulls lead as the team from New York would not look back any time soon.

THE BOBBLEHEAD GUY DID IT!!!!!!

Luquinhas escaped a doubled team on the RW, and once he got to the end line cut it back to the penalty area where Tolkin was making his run. In an awkward shot while falling, the Chatham, NJ native scored his first goal of 2022.

Red Bull were on their way to a victory at D.C. for the first time since 2020 after going 0-2 last season, but they were not done at Audi Field.

In the 67th minute, Dylan Nealis caught the D.C. sleeping on a FK as he threaded a through ball to a sprinting Cameron Harper down the RW, who would find Zach Ryan at the near post for a tap in and it was 3-0 just like that.

— New York Red Bulls (@NewYorkRedBulls) May 11, 2022

No more goals were scored by either team, but the game started to get physical down the stretch with both teams picking up multiple yellow cards in typical D.C.-Red Bull fashion.

After three minutes of stoppage time, official Matthew Franz blew his whistle one last time and it is Red Bull moving on to the US Open Cup Round of 16 slated for later this month. New York will learn their opponent on Thursday when the USSF conducts the Fifth Round draw.

Post-game

Red Bull’s manager Gerhard Struber in his opening statement postgame said, “We are right now very happy we are in the next round. I expected today from my boys that we go with all our power in this game. We were good in some transition moments, we were sharp when we have the one-on-one chance and we can see how important Luquinhas is for us to create overload moments, to create the right passes, and then we can see how easy it is to score.”

On new young players like Daniel Edelman & Cameron Harper contributing and having very solid individual performances, Struber could not be happier for those two specifically. “Especially some new faces coming in the game, Daniel Edelman today a starting player, the first time for him in the Open Cup and he created and also had a good game. With Cameron Harper in the second half, he has a long-term injury behind him, right now we can see his dribbling ability, also he was clean in the box, and I think in the end, we deserved to win and with this result and this high.

Scorer of the second goal, John Tolkin, said winning at Audi Field was the first thing the boys talked about in the dressing room.  “It’s always a tough place to come here and win. Obviously last year, we didn’t get a win here, so we’re really happy with this. It helps us with our momentum, and we carry it on to this weekend with a big game against Philly.”

Talking to the media for the first time this season, USYNT U20 midfielder Daniel Edelman could not hide his excitement to one, get his first career start for the first team and two get the win.

“I’m super happy and stoked I was able to start today and get the victory”, said Edelman. “I’ve been ready for this moment and I’m always preparing for whenever my chance comes. Today, I got the opportunity, and we got the three points. My teammates and everyone were helping me get through the game and we got the three points.”

Wrap Up

Red Bull have been on fire when it comes to playing on the road this season. With the win, Red Bull improves to 7-0-0 on the road this season in all competitions, outscoring their opponents 18-4 with three clean sheets. They will look to continue that trend at Philadelphia as they look to become the first team in MLS history to start a season 6-0 on the road.

For DC United, that is a wrap on their hopes of capturing their 10th major trophy in franchise history. They now look to improve their form in MLS, which currently has them in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 4-0-5 (12 PTS) as they look for some redemption on the road against Inter Miami.

2022 US Open Cup Round 4: History repeats as Louisville City silences crowd with PK win over Detroit City FC

Detroit City FC and Louisville City FC may now be competitors in the USL Championship, but it’s been a while since meeting in the US Open Cup. Much like 2016 when the teams last met in Cup play, Louisville City advanced on penalties to the Round of 16 after a 1-1 draw with host Detroit, who were then an amateur side in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

With the 4-2 win in the shootout, Louisville City is one of the last lower division sides remaining. The last time they made it this far was 2018, when they reached the Quarterfinals before bowing out to the Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer.

Both sides were tested early in the match. In the 4th minute, DCFC striker Francis Atuahene was served a long ball from Maxi Rodriguez along the right wing, where he was able to get past the defense and hit a shot toward the back post. Louisville goalkeeper Kyle Morton made the diving save to his right to stop the effort. Four minutes later, LCFC’s Brian Ownby was the recipient of his own long ball toward the net, but his advance into the box was cleared by Detroit’s Deklan Wynne before the goal could be threatened.

The game continued back and forth until the 12th minute. Atuahene intercepted a failed clearance from the Louisville defense and lobbed the ball past defender Sean Totsch. Totsch then recovered to clip Atuahene in the box, earning DCFC a penalty kick.

Just like in Detroit’s win over the Columbus Crew in the previouus round, reigning TheCup.us Player of the Round Maxi Rodriguez stepped up to take the spot kick. This time, he went the opposite way of Morton, going to his left to give Le Rouge the 1-0 lead in the 14th minute. It was Rodriguez’s third goal of this tournament (second from the penalty spot), and fourth of his USOC career.

Although Louisville City went down, they were not discouraged, and kept pressing on. They earned a free kick just outside of the box after a cleared corner led to Antoine Hoppenot checking Joshua Wynder to the turf in the 16th minute. Paolo DelPiccolo took the free kick, aiming for the top left corner. However, Steinwascher was able to tip the ball off the crossbar and back into his possession.

Louisville was rewarded for their efforts in the 24th minute, as a corner kick led to multiple LCFC players touching the ball prior to Wes Charpie taking a shot from the top of the six-yard box. His effort was blocked by Connor Rutz, but the rebound fell to striker Wilson Harris, who was able to bury the ball into the back of the net and equalize the match. It was Harris’ second goal of the tournament. The first was the lone goal in the team’s 1-0 home win over Chattanooga Red Wolves (USL League One) in the Second Round.

LCFC was able to earn one last chance before halftime. Ownby was able to head a one-time cross toward the net. He had Steinwascher beat, but not defender Devon Amoo-Mensah, as he headed the ball off the line.

The second half saw more chances from both sides, but neither were able to break the deadlock. The last 10 minutes of regulation saw Louisville City earn more opportunities as the limited roster for DCFC due to injuries appeared to catch up with them, but the Detroit City back line held firm, and the result led to extra-time.

— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) May 11, 2022

Each club had one good chance to take the lead in extra time, but neither were successful. Detroit’s came first in the 102nd minute as substitute Billy Forbes sent in a cross for Pato Botello Faz inside the box. Botello Faz was able to volley a shot on target, but a diving stop by Morton prevented the home side from taking advantage. In the 109th minute, it was Louisville’s turn. A feed into the box turned in to a one-time shot, but a sliding Amoo-Mensah blocked the opportunity.

For the second round in a row, Louisville City’s match would be decided by a penalty kick shootout. In Round 3, they defeated St. Louis CITY 2 (MLS Next Pro) 9-8 after a scoreless draw. While Lou City entered the game having never lost a shootout (2-0), Detroit City, as a club, entered the night as one of the most experienced clubs, having reached PKs on four occasions (2-2 record).

— Louisville City FC (@loucityfc) May 11, 2022

Sean Totsch started the penalty kick session for Louisville and put the first shot away. Goals were then traded by Rodriguez and Niall McCabe. The second DCFC kick, taken by Rhys Williams, was saved by a diving Morton, leaving Louisville with a 2-1 lead after two rounds. Harris and Hoppenot then both put away their kicks as LCFC led 3-2 after three. Ian Soler was able to bury his penalty, putting DCFC on the brink. Their captain Stephen Carroll stepped to the spot ready to keep his club alive, but instead skied the shot over the crossbar, leaving Louisville City victorious.

Detroit City FC leaves the tournament, but not before claiming victory over an MLS side (Columbus Crew) and advancing the furthest they’ve ever been in the USOC, surpassing two Second Round finishes from 2016 and 2018 as an amateur side. The game itself was the focus of the night with much of the pre-game controversy fading to the background. Normally the crowd at Keyworth Stadium is known for being energetic from the first whistle to the last, but notably, the supporters of Le Rouge stayed silent for the first five minutes of the match in protest of the club enforcing a rule about displaying profanity on signs and clothing. Traveling Louisville City supporters remained quiet in solidarity. Once the clock hit the 5:00 mark, the rowdiness of the stadium was restored and the “censorship” drama was moved to the background.

For Louisville City, they advance to the Round of 16, and extend their unbeaten streak in all competitions to 13 games. They will learn their opponent on Thursday when the USSF conducts the draw for the Fifth Round.

2022 US Open Cup Round 4, Day 1 Review: Historic comeback, 30-yard golazo, dramatic PKs among highlights

May 11, 2022 by Chuck Nolan Jr.

May 10, 2022

The first of two days of matches for the Fourth Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup are in the books. While none of the six games on Tuesday nights included upsets, there was no shortage of drama.

Louisville City survived an all-USL battle at Keyworth Stadium in Metro Detroit with a penalty kick shootout win, while Inter Miami CF prevailed in the only game featuring a MLS team against a lower division side. The game of the night was Sporting Kansas City’s historic comeback over FC Dallas, while the goal of the night was Orlando City’s 30-yard bomb that turned out to be a game-winner.

There are 10 Fourth Round matches scheduled for Wednesday. Those 10 winners will advance to the Round of 16. The draw for the Fourth Round is Thursday.

All games this round, and the rest of the tournament, will be broadcasted on the ESPN+ subscription service. Additionally, as first announced by USL Director of Content Nicholas Murray, there will be an Open Cup “whip-around” show on ESPN+ for Wednesday’s 10-game slate. This will likely a program in a similar vein to Sky Sport’s “Match of the Day” or, for us hot-blooded Americans, something like the NFL Redzone.

As always, TheCup.us will have reporters at every game and will be providing in-game updates on Twitter (@USOpenCup) and as we have done for more than a decade, the hashtag we recommend is #USOC2022.

Click HERE for a preview of every Fourth Round match with links to ESPN+ broadcasts. Look below for a brief recap of all six of Tuesday’s games with links to a full match recap (with video highlights):

Philadelphia Union (MLS) 1:2 Orlando City SC (MLS)
Exploria Stadium; Orlando, FL

Orlando City SC advanced to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 win over a  reserve-laden Philadelphia Union at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

After a scoreless first half, Orlando opened the scoring on Ercan Kara’s 54th minute goal. After a shot from Junior Urso was blocked by goalkeeper Matthew Freese, Kara put away the rebound. Andres Perea followed three minutes later with a blast from about 30 yards out to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

In the 77th minute Stuart Findlay cut the lead in half off a Jose Martinez lob pass, and Kai Wagner nearly sent the game into extra time in the fourth minute of stoppage time with a header, but Mason Stajduhar was right there for the save.

Facing a rough stretch of 4 games in 15 days, Philadelphia used a lineup with many reserves in order to give regular starters a rest. [+] FULL MATCH REPORT

New York Red Bulls (MLS) 3:0 D.C. United (MLS)
Audi Field; Washington, D.C.

The New York Red Bulls cruised past D.C. United 3-0 at Audi Field in Washington to advance to the Round of 16.

Just as the first half looked to finish scoreless, the Red Bulls snatched the lead when Luquinhas put away a pass from Dru Yearwood in the third minute of first half stoppage time. The second half had been underway just a couple minutes when Luquinhas helped extend the lead. The Brazilian sent a pass from the right side of the box, and John Tolken met the ball as he was sliding down and put it past goalkeeper Rafael Romo for a 2-0 lead.

Zach Ryan put the game away in the 68th minute when he snuck a Cameron Harper pass just inside the post at close range to push the lead to 3-0. [+] FULL MATCH REPORT

Louisville City FC (USL-C) 1:1 (AET) Detroit City FC (USL-C)
Louisville City FC advance on penalties, 4-2
Keyworth Stadium; Hamtramck, MI

You just can’t expect a boring Open Cup game at Keyworth Stadium in 2022.

Detroit City’s 3-0 Second Round win over Michigan Stars brought accusations of “sabotage” from their opponents. Then Detroit won their Third Round game 2-1 over the Columbus Crew with an 86th minute penalty.

Their Fourth Round game versus league rivals Louisville City went all the way to penalties, and the raucous Keyworth fans went home disappointed when the visitors came out on top in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 extra time draw to advance to the Round of 16.

Detroit scored first in the 14th minute. After Detroit’s Francis Atuahene was brought down in the box by Sean Totsch, Maxi Rodriguez stepped up and converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead. Louisville needed just ten minutes to respond, as a corner kick found its way to Wilson Harris, whose shot found the bottom left corner of the goal. An action packed first half ended 1-1.

Along with their respective back lines, goalkeepers Nathan Steinwascher of Detroit and Kyle Morton of Louisville each made several key stops through the second half and extra time.

In the penalty shootout Morton gave Louisville the early advantage in the second round of kicks, saving Rhys Williams’ attempt. Louisville converted all four of their penalties, and the end came when Stephen Carroll sent his shot sailing over the bar. [+] FULL MATCH REPORT

South Georgia Tormenta FC (USL-1) 1:3 Inter Miami CF (MLS)
DRV PNK Stadium; Fort Lauderdale, FL

In Inter Miami CF’s first-ever home game in the US Open Cup, they held off a game South Georgia Tormenta of USL League One, 3-1 to advance to the Round of 16.

The hosts grabbed the lead just before halftime, taking advantage of a Tormenta turnover which led to Indiana Vassilev rolling a pass to Ariel Lassiter, who fired past goalkeeper Pablo Jara for a 1-0 lead.

Just two minutes after halftime Miami took advantage of another Tormenta turnover, as Robert Taylor intercepted a pass from Jara and fed halftime sub Robbie Robinson, who fired a shot from the top of the box for a 2-0 lead.

Tensions boiled over in the 65th minute when Robinson and South Georgia’s Jake Dengler got into a wrestling match at midfield, resulting in both men receiving red cards.

Vassilev and Lassiter teamed up again for Miami’s third goal in the 83rd minute. Lassiter collected Vassilev’s pass at midfield then dribbled into the penalty area, his shot partially blocked by defender Chris Thorn before bouncing off the crossbar and across the line.

South Georgia pulled a goal back in the 88th minute when Kazaiah Sterling collected a through ball from Owen Green, putting his shot past Drake Callender. [+] FULL MATCH REPORT

FC Dallas (MLS) 2:4 (AET) Sporting Kansas City (MLS)
Children’s Mercy Park; Kansas City, KS

Just call Sporting Kansas City the Comeback Kids.

Down 2-0 to FC Dallas at halftime, SKC fought back to tie the game at 2-2 in the 8th minute of second half stoppage time, then scored twice in extra time for a 4-2 win and a spot in the Round of 16.

Franco Jara took advantage of a defensive mistake by Sporting in the 8th minute to score from a tight angle for a 1-0 lead. Edwin Munjoma doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a shot from just outside the penalty area after an assist from Jader Obrien.

In the 60th minute Nikola Vujnovic jumped on a sloppy defensive pass in the penalty area to hit the top corner of the goal to cut the lead to 2-1.

Disaster struck for Dallas in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Jose MArtinez was shown a red card after fouling Daniel Salloi on a breakaway. Just one minute later Marinos Tzionis headed home a corner kick from Remi Walter to bring KC back from the brink of elimination, giving them 30 more minutes to win.

Four minutes into extra time Kansas City got a lucky bounce, as a Khiry Shelton shot was stopped by Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer, but the ball deflected off the back of Dallas’ Edwin Cerrillo and into the goal for a 3-2 Kansas City lead. Shelton confirmed the comeback win in the 113th minute, jumping on a Dallas throw-in that Cerrillo couldn’t control in the penalty area to easily beat Maurer to cap off the 4-2 comeback victory. With the win, LAFC avenges their 1-0 loss to the Timbers in the 2019 Quarterfinals. Cristian Arango opened the scoring for the home side with a goal in the 32nd minute on an assist by Kwadwo Opoku. In the 54th minute, Mamadou Fall pounced on a loose ball that sprung loose from a corner kick and buried i to double his team’s lead. Max Crepeau made six saves to earn the clean sheet for LAFC. 2022 US Open Cup Round 4: Sporting KC’s historic equalizer sparks OT comeback over FC Dallas

A red card. A saved free kick. A corner.

It all happened late in second-half stoppage time for Sporting Kansas City, trailing by a goal. Remi Walter lined up the perfect corner, all Marinos Tzionis needed to do was get a piece of it.

He did. Jimmy Maurer didn’t have a chance in the FC Dallas net. That came in the eighth minute of second half stoppage time.

It was his first goal for his new club.

Sporting Kansas City, in front of 14,922 at Children’s Mercy Park, came back from a two-goal deficit to force extra time before winning 4-2 in Round 4 of the US Open Cup. It was the latest regulation goal in Sporting Kansas City history.

That two-goal deficit after the first half wasn’t for nothing.

First Sporting goal.

First Open Cup goal.

Sporting was miserable in the first half and unplayable in the second. The hosts did not have a shot until deep into first-half stoppage time and it was nowhere near challenging Jimmy Maurer in the east-side net. After getting outshot 8-2 in the first half, Sporting outshot Dallas 23-12 by the time the match finished.

SKC looked left for dead after Edwin Munjoma made it 2-0 for Dallas, especially after the visitors’ opening goal came off a wrong-team assist from goalkeeper John Pulskamp to Franco Jara.

— Sporting Kansas City (@SportingKC) May 11, 2022

After the half-time whistle, though, Dallas’s collapse began.

“The first half was my fault,” Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said. “I think that we weren’t prepared to play in the system that we put together; we just didn’t feel comfortable.

“We made a change in that first half, we went back to a 4-3-3, then all the sudden the guys started to get a little more comfortable.”

The win comes at an important time for Kansas City, as its last victory in all competitions came March 26 against Real Salt Lake. It also extends the club’s unbeaten run in home matches in the Open Cup to 10, which is tied for the second-longest active streak with Chicago Fire. Philadelphia Union’s 11-match home unbeaten streak is the longest.

It was the fifth time the two clubs have met in the tournament — all SKC wins, all in Kansas City.

Tuesday was the third time in the past four Open Cups that the two had faced each other.

“We’ve been working hard,” SKC forward Khiry Shelton said. “We needed this. We needed to be lifted a little bit because we didn’t have the start we wanted this season, but the effort’s been there … It’s not like a team has actually beat us, it’s been our own mistakes.”

Two-goal comeback wins are not common in US Open Cup play. Tuesday’s rally by Sporting Kansas City was just the 17th time that a team overcame a two-goal deficit in the Modern Era (1995-present). It was the third time that Kansas City were the comeback kids.

Both teams had a completely different starting lineup from their most recent match.

Sporting’s revitalization was clear from the second-half kickoff. Fifteen minutes later, Nikola Vujnovic’s first goal for his new club, a rifle into the roof of the net, set off the comeback. Shelton’s shot deflected off Dallas defender Edwin Cerillo for an own goal to ice the match for the win for Sporting Kansas City.

— Sporting Kansas City (@SportingKC) May 11, 2022

“That was pretty funny actually,” Shelton said. “Sometimes you need some luck. That’s what happened on the first goal.”

Cerillo’s turnover in his own box in the second half of extra time led to Sporting’s insurance goal from Shelton, who needed to do nothing more than simply pass it into the open net.

“I’m big on energy, and I kinda took a peek over to their bench and everyone’s head is down. They’re kind of exhausted,” Shelton said. “We’re like, ‘Come on, this is ours. This is for us right now.’”

The story of the match lies on one coin — one side showing the comeback, the other showing the collapse.

Leading 2-0, FC Dallas should never have let that lead slip. Sporting Kansas City only made one substitution prior to its opening goal — a forced move in the 18th minute as Ozzie Cisneros made way for Cam Duke after an apparent injury.

“I believe that we’ve been building towards this for a while,” Vermes said. “I think we’ve had really good performances… It has a lot to do with the fight of the guys.”

Dallas’ collapse began long before Jose Martinez’s red card in the 97th minute. The visitors came out flat in the second half, allowing Sporting Kansas City to dictate the match. From there, the chances piled up and the defense began to buckle.

It was only a matter of time.

After Vujnovic scored Sporting’s first, it appeared that there would only be one winner.

“I was so happy for myself and for (the fans),” Vujnovic said. “For a second, I thought I would score a second one but then I got subbed out.”

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup made its return to the former site of Lockhart Stadium, now known as Drive Pink Stadium. It was the herons of Inter Miami hosting the visiting ibises of South Georgia Tormenta FC. USL League One teams have so far been the nice surprise of this edition of the tournament, with Union Omaha and Northern Colorado Hailstorm both upsetting MLS teams in the previous round. Tormenta came down to South Florida looking to hopefully add on another cupset to League One’s tally.

In the end, Inter Miami was too strong playing in front of their home fans, beating Tormenta 3-1 to earn a spot in the Round of 16. Ariel Lassiter led the way with a pair of goals to keep Miami’s inaugural cup run moving.

Tormenta’s coach Ian Cameron made it clear that they were going for it and at the start of the match, his squad were instantly pressuring Inter Miami. A handful of on-target attempts by Tormenta in the first ten minutes were saved by Inter’s Drake Callender.

Two players stood out in the first half with Jamil Roberts orchestrating Tormenta’s attack while Miami’s Ariel Lassiter led a siege each time he got on the ball with his blistering pace.

Tormenta looked the better side and it seemed like it was only a matter of time before they scored. It was going to take one quick counter attack for someone to breakthrough. Near the end of the first half, Inter Miami won possession which led to a counter attack led by Gonzalo Higuain and Indiana Vassilev. Returning loanee Vassilev set up Lassiter’s first goal of the night, playing a pass to the left side of the penalty area. Lassiter settled and fired a shot inside the near post to beat Tormenta goalkeeper Pablo Jara to give Miami the lead before halftime. Tormenta were unlucky to be going into the break down a goal despite their dominance.

Higuain’s return only lasted the first 45 minutes as he was subbed off and Robbie Robinson took his place at the start of the second half. He made an instant impact by scoring 87 seconds into his stint; giving Miami a 2-0 lead. The Tormenta goalkeeper attempted a pass along the ground up the middle of the field to a teammatte but Jara’s pass was knocked away by Miami’s Robert Taylor who stepped in from behind to send the ball up to Robinson just outside the box. Robinson made Tormenta pay for their mistake, firing a shot into the back of the net from the right side for his first career Open Cup goal.

In the 65th minute, Robinson made a different kind of impact by engaging in a physical altercation with Tormenta’s Jake Dengler. This would see both players sent off and the teams playing with just 10 men for the remainder of the match.

A lapse in concentration from Inter Miami’s defense in the 73rd minute gave Tormenta a chance to get one goal back. Before Kingsford Adjei could score, Jairo Quinteros was able to clear the ball and keep Inter’s lead intact. Tormenta had another short stint of great attempts but Miami held strong.

Despite the best efforts of the Ibises, Ariel Lassiter would seal the game for Inter Miami with a “Schrodinger’s goal” that was hard to tell if it went in after deflecting off the underside of the crossbar. The referee judged that it did as Lassiter bagged his seventh career Open Cup goal, six more than his father Roy scored in his playing career that spanned more than a decade.

Tormenta would not leave quietly into the night, as their long-awaited goal would come from Kazaiah Sterling in the final minutes, taking away Callender’s clean sheet performance. The game would end 3-1 with South Georgia Tormenta being eliminated in the Round of 32.

“I didn’t take much joy out of winning this game,” said Phil Neville in the post-game press conference. He felt that Tormenta should have been multiple goals up by halftime and called his squad’s first half performance “unacceptable.” He added that some players who were asking for playing time got their wish and showed why they won’t be playing in this Saturday’s league fixture.

Having played local rival Miami FC in the Third Round, now Inter Miami face the possibility of matching up with league rival Orlando City SC in the Round of 16. Both sets of fans will eagerly watch the draw on Thursday to see if the first ever Open Cup edition of the Sunshine Classico will happen.

For Orlando City goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar, it was a very special Tuesday night.

Getting the second straight start in the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, he came up with three big saves, including the game-clinching stop in the last seconds of the match.

As his team celebrated around him, he ran to one of the athletic trainers to get a special gift for a special person.

Moments later, Mason’s girlfriend Tatiana found him on the field, he got on his knee and proposed.

“I got engaged! She said yes!” Stajduhar said after the game, “I was more nervous than before the game, but she said yes.”

That moment capped off the night for Orlando City as they beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 to advance to the Round of 16 in the US Open Cup for the third tournament in a row.

“I thought it was a very enjoyable game for our fans and the intensity just shows the respect that both teams had for the cup,” Orlando head coach Oscar Pareja said after the game, “It was not far from the high level in the league. I liked the effort a lot from our players, especially in a very, very difficult match against a very good team.”

The first 45 minutes saw both teams feeling each other out with nothing on the scoreboard to show for it.

Then the Lions took the advantage just nine minutes into the second half. Fullback Mikey Halliday made a darting run down the wing, crossed the ball into midfielder Junior Urso, who had his initial shot blocked. Designated Player Ercan Kara was there to clean up the shot and put it past goalkeeper Matt Freese to take the advantage. It was Kara’s first career US Open Cup goal.

After Orlando survived a few minutes of Philadelphia pushing for the equalizer, the Lions added a second in the 57th minute in spectacular fashion. Alexandre Pato had a ball cleared at the top of the box, as it fell right to Andres Perea.

Perea did just that. From 30 yards out, the midfielder smashed a line drive past Freese and into the back of the net to create some breathing room for the Lions.

As the game wore on, the Union continued to get closer and closer to closing the gap. In the 77th minute, Stuart Findlay got on a ball into the box and tapped it past Mason Stajduhar to make it a one-goal game.

The Lions were able to hold on for the final 23 minutes, as they advance into the round of 16.

The Philadelphia Union, on the other hand, have extended their road winless streak in the Open Cup to eight games. That’s the second-longest streak of the Modern Era (1995-present).

Orlando, who reached the Semifinals in their last Open Cup run in 2019, will await Thursday’s draw to find out their next opponent.
