Pat Healey, a midfielder from Crystal Palace Baltimore, was selected as the Player of the Round for the First Round of this year’s Lamar Hunt US Open Cup by the editorial staff of TheCup.us.

His two goals led the USL Second Division club to a 2-1 victory over the PDL’s Los Angeles Legends. A 2008 draft pick of Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards, Healey returned to Baltimore to finish his degree at Towson University and chose to play for his hometown side.

Recently, we caught up with Pat to discuss the First Round match, Palace’s upcoming Second Round matchup with the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) and his career to date.

TheCup.us:  What was the team’s initial reaction when it found out that they would be heading to Los Angeles to play in the First Round, one of only two teams of the 32 to be subject to a cross-country trip?

Healey:  We knew it would be difficult going across the country to play the Legends, but it was just how the draw worked out. The draw is what it is, so we were fine with it. It was difficult to travel 3000 miles during the week when you had two games the previous weekend and a game at home the weekend after the Open Cup game. We were very happy to go to L.A. and get a very good win against a very good PDL team.

TheCup.us:  Talk about playing for your hometown team and being raised in a soccer environment from an early age. Was there interest from USL-1 sides, MLS or abroad following your career at Towson?

Healey:  It is great to play where you grew up. Growing up, I watched a lot of professional teams play in the area and to part of Baltimore professional soccer is great. I was very excited to sign with Crystal Palace. I have always wanted to play professional soccer and this made my dream come true.

I was drafted by the Kansas City Wizards in the fifth round of this year’s draft. I went to their pre-season camp trying to make the squad, but it didn’t work out that way. When I got released, I went home to Baltimore. When I came back, I decided to finish my last year of college. A few days later, I began talking to Crystal Palace and signed in a day or two. It was the perfect fit for me and I couldn’t be happier. It is great to be the hometown boy signing with the hometown team.

TheCup.us:  Preview a bit your club’s Second Round match against Harrisburg, a fellow USL-2 opponent that Palace lost to just two weeks ago at home. Does their pedigree in the Open Cup give them an advantage?

Healey: Harrisburg is a very good team. We played them on June 8th and lost 1-0. It was a very hard fought game on a very hot day. We came up on the wrong side of the stick in that game. We learned a lot about Harrisburg and ourselves after that game. It will be a good match in Harrisburg, and I hope we can go on the road again and get a good win.

TheCup.us:  Who are some of your soccer role models? Who do you model your game after most?

Healey:  My soccer role model is my father (former Baltimore Bays/Blast coach Kevin Healey). He is a very good coach who has coached from professional soccer to youth soccer. He has been successful at every level. From an early age, he has taught me everything. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. I can sit and talk to him about soccer for hours and it only feels like a short time. I could not have had a better role model.

I try to model my game after Paul Scholes. The guy is a world-class player. He isn’t the fastest guy or have the most step-over moves, but he gets the job done. He cares about the team success above everything and that is the most important. He is a winner!

TheCup.us:  I see you are majoring in Sport Management at Towson. Any ambitions for a post-playing career in soccer?

Healey:  I am finishing my degree this summer. For my post-playing career, I am interested in a lot of things. I have thought about it, but playing professional soccer is the most important right now. I have been putting hard work in for many years to get to this point, so I am going to put my best foot forward with soccer at this time.

Things you should know about the First Round

In the lone upset in this year’s opening round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, Hollywood United became only the second USASA club to defeat a USL First Division team in the tournament, knocking off the Portland Timbers with a dramatic, stoppage-time goal from Earl Alexander.

A pair of penalty kicks by Matt Taylor kept Hollywood level with their professional hosts. The Timbers tallied with goals fron Chris Brown (32nd minute), and Arsene Oka (51st minute). A crucial turning point in the match came in the 53rd minute, when Hollywood goalkeeper Javier Barragan saved a penalty kick from the Timbers’ Takayuki Suzuki, keeping the score 2-1 in favor of Portland.

Four other amateur teams nearly joined Hollywood in the Second Round.

In Phoenix, Arizona, the defending USL First Division Champion Seattle Sounders needed 118 minutes to find the winning goal against the USASA’s Arizona Sahuaros. Kenji Treschuk scored the winning goal with just a couple minutes remaining in extra time, before the match would go to penalty kicks.

In Austin, Texas, the Atlanta Silverbacks got a penalty kick goal from David Hayes late in overtime to tie the game back up at 2-2 and sent the game into a tiebreaking shootout against the PDL’s Austin Aztex U23s. However, Atlanta would prevail, with Hayes sending the USL-1 side to the next round with the winning kick.

In Rochester, the Rhinos also needed extra time to knock off Chicago USASA club RWB Adria 2-1. Awadallah Morad tied the game for Adria with just four minutes remaining in regulation, and Hamed Diallo scored the eventual winning goal for Rochester just seven minutes into the extra period.

One match on Tuesday’s schedule was washed out by inclement weather, but the day after New York Pancyprian Freedoms (USASA Region I) took the Real Maryland Monarchs (USL-2) to overtime. The Monarchs needed an 85th minute equalizer and a late extra time goal to end the Freedoms’ upset bid.

2008 First Round: Real Maryland’s late goal, OT winner, spoil Freedoms’ upset bid

June 13, 2008 by

The Real Maryland Monarchs survived the New York Pancyprian Freedoms’ upset bid with two late goals, one in regulation and the other in extra time, after New York were reduced to ten men for a 3-2 First Round win.

The USASA side took an early lead when Julio Cesar DoSantos took advantage of a mistake by Maryland defender Marcos Chantal to score the first goal of the match. The score remained 1-0 until a few minutes into the second half, when Dennis Alas’s free kick was headed home by Muner Hassen to tie the score.

Thirteen minutes after the Monarchs drew level, the Pancyprian Freedoms regained the lead, when a free kick was headed into the penalty area, and Matia Damiani met the ball at the back post  for a 2-1 lead.

The turning point came in the 83rd minute, when the Freedoms’ Panagoitis Halkidis was booked twice in the span of a minute, reducing New York to ten men. Just two minutes later, the Monarchs found the tying goal, when Nilson Perez put away a pass from Alas. In the final minutes of the half, Maryland pressed for the winning goal, but short-handed New York survived to send the match to extra time.

On through extra time, Maryland held the run of play, but New York withstood the pressure. Just as the game seemed destined for penalty kicks, the Monarchs scored. A free kick from Alas was initally blocked by goalkeeper Dilmer Martinez, but Marcos Chantal met the rebound with a header for the winning goal.

The Monarchs now move on to face the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division in the Second Round, with the winner to take on a team from Major League Soccer in the Third Round.

A gutsy performance by 10 man New York playing on the road against a team from a higher division, but the extra bit of class showed in the end. The loyal Monarchs fans stayed and sang to the end and are now headed to Cary, North Carolina on June 24th to face the Carolina Railhawks of USL-1.

2008 First Round: Kupono Low saves RailHawks against Brooklyn Knights

June 10, 2008 by

Midfielder Kupono Low scored on a free kick in the 85th minute, giving the Carolina RailHawks a 1-0 victory over the PDL’s Brooklyn Knights in a First Round US Open Cup match in Cary, N.C.

Carolina had a 10-6 advantage in shots, but the USL First Division team put only two shots on goal. The only one that got past Knights goalkeeper Elvir Prasovic was Low’s free kick that got through the Brooklyn defense to give them a late lead. The RailHawks defense would hold on in the final minutes to advance to the next round.

It hasn’t been easy for Carolina lately. The club has allowed the tying or winning goal in the final six minutes three times in their previous five games. Chris McClellan earned a clean sheet while only having to make two saves for the RailHawks, who will play host to Real Maryland in the Second Round.

2008 First Round: Spicer’s hat trick helps Charleston shoot down USASA’s New Stars

June 10, 2008 by

Darren Spicer’s natural hat trick in the first half was all the Charleston Battery needed for a 3-0 victory over the visiting ASC New Stars.

The Houston-based USASA club nearly jumped out to the lead after 12 minutes, as Esteban Lotero found Alex Bolan with a through ball. Bolan beat Charleston goalkeeper Keith Wiggans, but the shot just missed wide right.

Five minutes later, Spicer began his scoring surge, heading home a cross from David Kenga. Spicer struck again in the 27th minute, this time receiving a pass from Aaron King, who found Spicer at the middle of the box for an easy header.

Just before halftime, Spicer completed his hat trick. Spicer recovered a loose ball after ASC tried to clear a cross by King, and the midfielder beat ASC goalkeeper Emilio Frias for the final goal. The Battery were dominate in their second all-time meeting with a USASA club. In a Second Round match in 2006, they narrowly defeated the Sonoma County Sol from California 1-0 at Blackbaud Stadium.

The Battery move on to the Second Round, where they will host the Charlotte Eagles of the USL Second Division on June 24.

2008 First Round: Harrisburg spoils Yakima’s cross country trip

June 10, 2008 by Aaron Stollar

The Harrisburg City Islanders wasted no time making sure the Yakima Reds wasted their cross-country trip, scoring in the first minute en route to a 5-1 drubbing of the PDL club. The Open Cup draw forced the Washington state-based PDL team to travel to City Island in Harrisburg, Pa. and the extra travel showed on the field as the City Islanders jumped on the Reds early.

David Schofield needed only 30 seconds after the kickoff to bead Yakima goalkeeper Robert McCurdy for a 1-0 lead, and the City Islanders never looked back. The lead doubled when a shot deflected off Yakima defender Joshua Hacker for an own goal. Harrisburg widened their lead to 4-0 by halftime through goals from Brett Wiesner and Almir Barbosa.

Geoff Bloes pushed the lead to 5-0 in the 57th minute. In the dying moments of the game, Alonzo Rojas ensured the Reds wouldn’t go home empty-handed, scoring with four minutes remaining to make the final score 5-1. The City Islanders will visit fellow USL-2 side Crystal Palace Baltimore in the Second Round on June 24.

Midfielder Pat Healey’s second goal of the night, a low strike inside the right post in the 88th minute, lifted Crystal Palace Baltimore to a 2-1 victory over the 10-man Los Angeles Legends in Azusa, Calif.

Healey opened the scoring for the USL Second Division side in the 43rd minute, connecting on a volley from the back post. The Legends were reduced to 10 men in the 59th minute as Ross Schunk drew a straight red card for a tackle. Three minutes later, though, the homestanding PDL club equalized through Kevin Gallagher.

Healey, though, made Palace’s 2,500-mile trip worth the while in the waning moments, matching his season goal total coming in with his second of the night and sending his club back to the East Coast for a Second Round meeting at the Harrisburg City Islanders.

2008 First Round: Hollywood (United) ending; USASA club stuns Portland Timbers

You all know the cliché, if you turned this story in to a movie producer, he would laugh at you because of the ridiculous ending. Well, since someone already turned this script in two years ago with the name Dallas Roma FC on it, perhaps it was time for a more dramatic sequel.

Hollywood United became only the second USASA club to defeat a USL First Division team in the US Open Cup, knocking off the Portland Timbers with a stoppage-time goal from Earl Alexander.

The Timbers jumped on the score sheet first. After gaining a free kick from a foul against Arsene Oka, Chris Brown connected on a low shot from 25 yards out, and just inside the left post. Just before the halftime whistle, Hollywood were given the breath of life they were looking for. Timbers defender Tim Karalexis was whistled for a foul in the penalty area, and former MLS veteran Matt Taylor stepped up and slotted his spot kick home past Jordan James for a 1-1 halftime score. Portland out-shot Hollywood 12-4 in the opening half.

Oka put the Timbers in the lead just six minutes before the re-start. Neil Dombrowski sent a precision cross that met the head of Oka, who tucked it inside the left post. Just two minutes later, Portland forward Takayuki Suzuki and United goalkeeper Javier Barragan faced off in what would turn out to be the pivotal point of the match. The Timbers were awarded a penalty for a foul in the area, and as Suzuki took the kick, his slow approach allowed Barragan to react correctly and stop the shot. Barragan started the game in goal over regular goalkeeper Mike Littman, who was forced to serve a one game suspension for a red card he received as a member of the Utah Blitzz in his last Open Cup game in 2003.

It only took United three minutes to capitalize on the momentum shift, as they were awarded their second penalty kick of the game when Timbers midfielder Kiki Lara fouled former Timber Alex Bengard just inside the box. Taylor stepped up once again and leveled the match a 2-2 in the 58th minute.

As the game headed into stoppage time, it appeared as if extra time was a certainty. However, Earl Alexander, a late sub for Hollywood, blasted a shot from the top of the box that appeared to deflect off a Portland player, reaching the top left corner of the goal and silencing the PGE Park crowd. For the few minutes that remained, the Timbers desperatley tried to tie the score, but Hollywood held on for the upset win. A joyous Hollywood United president Anthony LaPaglia ran from player to player, often jumping into their arms in celebration as the dejected Timbers left the field.

2008 First Round: Rhinos survive extra time with USASA’s RWB Adria

June 10, 2008 by

The Rochester Rhinos escaped the clutches of the upset-minded RWB Adria, needing an extra time goal from Hamed Diallo to overcome the Chicago-based USASA club 2-1. The match marked the first time that the Rhinos, competing in their 13th US Open Cup competition, had faced a club from the USASA.

The teams played to a scoreless tie for 73 minutes, when Diallo was brought down in the penalty area. Tiger Fitzpatrick stepped up and converted the spot kick for a 1-0 lead. Just as Rochester seemed ready to book their Second Round ticket, RWB Adria proved why the game is 90 minutes long. Joey Carver found a wide-open Awadallah Morad, who buried the ball into an open net with just four minutes remaining.

The Rhinos took the lead back for good six minutes into the first extra period, when Diallo received a header from Matthew Delicate, dribbled past RWB Adria defender Justin Dugena and scored. Scott Vallow preserved the Rhinos’ win with a kick save on a wide-open shot by Carver with just five minutes remaining.

2008 First Round: City Stars overcome early blunder, knock out Michigan Bucks

June 10, 2008 by

The Cleveland City Stars overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Michigan Bucks 2-1, and move on to the Second Round. The game was played in the Bucks’ new indoor soccer stadium in Pontiac, Mich. but Cleveland eliminated the home team in the opening round for only the second time in eight tournament appearances.

In the 4th minute of play, a defensive mishap led to a Bucks goal. On a back pass to goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap, the ball took a funny bounce over Gilstrap’s foot, allowing Ty Shiplane to swoop in for the easy score.

Midway through the first half, Cleveland was able to equalize, as Floyd Franks scored off a pass from Neil Hlavaty. A few minutes later, the pair switched roles, as it was Hlavaty benefiting from a Franks cross to head home what would prove to be the game-winning goal.

One might assume that this would mark the first time that a US Open Cup match was ever played indoors. Actually, this was the second indoor match in the tournament’s history. In the Fourth Round of the 2004 Open Cup, the Minnesota Thunder hosted the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Metrodome in front of 5,505 fans. Minnesota won that match 1-0.

With the win, Cleveland has advanced to the Second Round in each of their first two seasons in franchise history. The Minnesota Thunder of the USL First Division await them in the next round.
