2017 US Open Cup Round 2: FC Cincinnati needs late OT goal to oust in-state NPSL champions

It took FC Cincinnati until the 117th minute of extra time to break through, but the USL club found a goal off the head of returning forward Djiby Fall to put away AFC Cleveland, 1-0.

The game was played on May 10 at Nippert Stadium at the University of Cincinnati in front of the biggest crowd to witness a Second Round US Open Cup game in the Modern Era (1995-present). Even if there weren’t exactly 12,790 bodies inside the stadium, it was still by far the largest crowd to witness a Round 2 game. (announced attendance figures are usually based on “paid attendance” which includes fans who have Open Cup games included in their season ticket packages)

This game marked the first matchup between teams from the cities of Cleveland and Cincinnati in the Modern Era (1995-present).

Cincinnati has been struggling in league play due to injuries and scoring threat Djiby Fall in the middle of six-game USL suspension for biting an opponent, so playing a US Open Cup match at home against the defending NPSL champions offered a chance to regroup.

“Obviously, us playing at home, being a team from a higher league, we’re supposed to go out there and we’re supposed to win, but that doesn’t always happen in cup soccer,” FC Cincinnati manager Alan Koch said.

Cincinnati outshot Cleveland 44-6, but the game remained scoreless until deep into overtime, as Cleveland goalkeeper Alex Ivanov kept his team in the match despite the lopsided attacking statistics.

Djibi, who was able to play against Cleveland because his suspension does not apply to Open Cup play, clearly was energized by his first match in three weeks. He logged 16 shots, but couldn’t get the ball past Ivanov until late in the 120-minute game.

Cincinnati launched 15 shots in the first half, but Cleveland was able to keep the match scoreless.

The visitors had two fine chances in the second half, but were unable to score.

Early in the second half, Cleveland’s Ryan Ware sent a rocket that bounced off the left post and in front of the net, but teammates were unable to put the loose ball into the net.

In the 58th minute, Cleveland nearly scored as a header that was deflected on net, forcing Cincinnati keeper Dallas Jaye to make a save off the line.

With the match still scoreless, Cleveland fell back as the match wore on, content to let Cincinnati control possession as AFC’s players put everyone behind the ball as they played out the rest of regulation.

In overtime, Cincinnati took control of the match, dominating possession and stifling any opportunity for Cleveland.

Finally, in the waning minutes of the second overtime period, Djibi sent a header out of the keeper’s reach off a cross from Andrew Weideman and into the net for the game-winner.

With the win, FC Cincinnati earns another home game in Round 3, this time against fellow USL side Louisville City FC.

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Phil Saunders of Christos FC named TheCup.us Player of the Round

To casual soccer fans, the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup run of Christos FC may seem like an interesting anomaly for the Baltimore amateur side. But for Phil Saunders, TheCup.us Player of the Round for the Second Round, it says a lot about where he grew up and learned to play.

“I feel we’ve always had a lot of talent coming out of Baltimore, but we have a tough time getting seen, or getting opportunities,” said Saunders. “I think it’s shown the talent that’s coming out of this city.”

Saunders was voted TheCup.us Player of the Round for his performance against the USL’s Richmond Kickers, where he made seven saves and notched a shutout to carry his side to a 1-0 victory and a trip to the next round. Other players who received strong consideration were Charlotte Independence’s Enzo Martinez and Jose Angulo of Saint Louis FC.

TheCup.us Player of the Round is voted on by TheCup.us staff, and a select panel from the North American Soccer Reporters. With Christos FC forward Pete Caringi III winning last round, this marks just the fourth time since 2006 that a team has won back-to-back awards prior to the Semifinals. (Cal FC, 2012 / Seattle Sounders, 2007 / Dallas Roma FC, 2006)

Saunders started making waves long before 2017 in his hometown where he was an award-winning field player before racking up an NCAA semifinal appearance and championships in the Under-19 Maguire Cup, the amateur national championship and the Amateur Open Cup.

In high school, his Perry Hall team played in the state finals his junior year with him between the sticks. By his senior year, Saunders had already committed to play for the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) when he graduated.

“The other was Zach Kane who ended up going to Loyola , so we ended up having two Division I keepers at Perry Hall. I played the field growing up, so I said I’d be willing to play center back my senior year … and ended up getting All-State center back.”

The success continued for Saunders after high school. After his freshman year at UMBC, he rejoined his teammates on the Baltimore Bays for the Maguire Cup Under-19 US Youth Soccer National Championships. Saunders talked about that experience casually, saying simply “when we were 19, we got the team together and ended up winning nationals. So that was pretty cool.” He humbly doesn’t mention that he was awarded the Golden Glove award for his performance in the tournament.

His success continued in college, as UMBC topped the America East table in 2012 and 2013, and won three successive tournament titles from 2012 and 2014, moving on to the NCAA tournament each time. During their first two trips, the Retrievers fell in penalty kicks in the Second Round – first to Virginia, then to UConn. In 2014, though, the team thrilled tournament watchers with a run to the Semifinals, during which they took the scalps of a Who’s Who of college soccer powerhouses – Wake Forest, Maryland, Louisville, and Creighton – before falling to Virginia.

“I had a great career at UMBC,” said Saunders. “The coaching staff was great and they do everything for you.”

That’s when things got interesting for Saunders.

“Post-college, I didn’t get picked up by any MLS team, and I didn’t know a whole lot about going pro. But my dad’s from England, so I had dual citizenship,” said Saunders.

He ended up having a tryout with Crewe Alexandra in League One, but didn’t get an offer.

“I went to a few combines, and then I went to the Atlanta combine for Soccer Viza, and had few offers from a couple different countries,” Saunders explained. “Joe Funicello sort of took me under his wing and I had a trial in Iceland and it went well. I ended up playing there in the second half of the 2014 season.”

His team in Iceland, Bi/Bolungarvik, signed him again for 2015.

“It was a great experience, the level’s really good,” said Saunders. “We had ex-Premier League players on our team, guys from Scotland, England, France, they’re kind of from all over … It’s a summer season, it’s about 5 or 6 months long. There’s a winter league, but a lot of the international guys go home.”

The Icelandic First Division was pretty different from Baltimore, though.

“The practice field is right up next to the side of a mountain. The views were insane,” Saunders described. “It was definitely an awesome experience living there for two years. There’s only about 2,000 people in the town. I think there’s only about 300,000 people in Iceland overall, and most of them are in Reykjavik.”

Injuries that Saunders picked up in Iceland and while playing for the MISL’s Baltimore Blast convinced him to retire after the 2015 season. That’s when he decided to join Christos FC (the team is named after their main sponsor, a Baltimore County liquor store).

“All the guys either played for the Bays or other teams in the area, like DC United Academy, or University of Maryland, UMBC, Towson,” said Saunders, who is also the head coach of the Community College of Baltimore County in Catonsville, Md.

In fact, some, such as Pete Caringi III, Levi Houapeu, and Mamadou Kansaye, flirted with MLS or USL. But the coaches at Christos kept tabs on Saunders, and “they said if I was done playing pro I could just come over.”

He adds matter-of-factly, “last year we won the amateur nationals and Amateur Open Cup nationals. Winning two national championships in a year was cool.” To Saunders, winning is almost secondary to the team experience, saying “it’s like a family. We all call each other ‘brother.’”

Coach Andrew Dicea doesn’t mince words when he talks about Saunders’ important role on the team.

“Phil’s like the heart and soul,” said Dicea. “He’s saved our behinds on many occasions. He’s the backbone of our defense. He’s the leader, and he was with us from Day 1.”

Phil showed that in the game against Richmond, but he almost focusses more on the experience the team had on the road.

“First of all, it was a great experience. We met up at a Park and Ride and took a van down,” Saunders explained. “There’s no pressure on us, there’s no reason for us to be beating a pro team, so we just had a good time driving down. We had the same 20-minute warmup we always do. It was definitely one of the coolest things I’ve had in my soccer career, just going down there with a bunch of buddies and beating a pro team. It was a really, really cool experience.”

MORE >> 2017 US Open Cup Round 1: Peter Caringi’s hat trick delivers Christos FC its first US Open Cup victory

Coach Dicea saw the game a little differently.

“We were up 1-0 and they started throwing the kitchen sink at us. made a save on an upper 90 shot that he pushed out for a corner kick – there aren’t many people who are amateur who could do what he does. ”

Saunders did mention one unusual aspect of the Kickers game, that made Christos’ defensive effort even more impressive.

“The other crazy thing is that we didn’t even have two true center backs. One of them had a bad head injury a couple weeks ago. And the other guy had work. So we had a couple holding midfielders playing center back, but they did great in front of me.”

Coach Dicea has started thinking about their opponents in the Third Round, Chicago FC United (PDL).

“They beat the Riverhounds, that’s a feat in itself,” Dicea said. “It’s gonna be a tough match, but if we go out there and play our game we can beat anybody. If we go out there and play their game, from what I’ve seen on YouTube, they could put a waxing on us.”

“We’re flying out on a Tuesday,” Saunders said of the upcoming match Third Round match against Chicago FC United. “It should be another awesome experience going out there with the guys… We know if we go out there and play like we can play, we give ourselves a chance to win the game. I don’t think anything really changes. It’s not like we’re starting to practice or anything. It’s just the same old Christos.”

MORE >> 2017 US Open Cup Round 1: Pete Caringi of Christos FC spaces out hat trick to earn TheCup.us Player of the Round

Still, this Baltimore team is quietly seeking to make a point. Jody Haislip, the founder and general manager of Christos, mentions the fact that Baltimore lacks a pro team, though he is holding out hope for a USL team in the near future.

“Each of these guys if they were in the right situation … would be able to play in USL or NASL,” said Haislip. “We need that rumor to become true and get a USL team here in Baltimore. That would help these local guys out.”

Saunders is understated when asked about the team’s prospects, but is embracing the club’s underdog mentality.

“It’s a great tournament,” he said. “We’re just staying humble, keeping that chip on our shoulder, and seeing where the ride takes us.”

2017 US Open Cup Round 1: GPS Omens earns first-ever win in rematch with GPS Portland Phoenix

May 23, 2017 by Ian Foster

GPS Omens logo

GPS Omens, of the Bay State Soccer League, took down GPS Portland Phoenix of the PDL, 2-0, to advance to the Second Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. It was the second-ever Open Cup meeting between these two members of the Global Premier Soccer organization and Omens made good on avenging their 2-0 loss to Portland in the 2013 Second Round.

Jake Johnson opened up the affair early with a 2nd minute strike to give Omens the 1-0 lead at Memorial Park in Portland, Maine. But it was Ben Shuleva, centerback for the Omens, who really shone on the night.

Omens found themselves a set piece opportunity in the 25th minute of a relatively dominant first half. Shuleva came up from the backline and headed in the insurance goal.

Shuleva and Zach Abdu-Glass, the goalkeeper for Omens, kept the door shut on Portland despite ever mounting pressure on the visitors’ goal. Portland pounded four of their five shots at the Omens goal, but Abdu-Glass saved four of them to preserve the shutout.

“This game is historically a tough one for us as we have very little lead in time,” said Portland coach Craig Fannan after the match. “We were a little naive in the first half and got punished for it. We continued to push, never gave up and can count ourselves unlucky not to get back into the game.”

After their first win in Open Cup history, GPS Omens has a Boston derby to look forward to as they take on Boston City FC in the Second Round.

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Reno 1868 FC needs PKs to become first pro team from Nevada to advance

May 23, 2017 by Nick Schiffler

Reno 1868 FC logo

Reno 1868 FC were able to make their first Open Cup match a successful one – but they had to battle through 120 minutes of soccer and a penalty shootout to do it.

The first-year USL club traveled to Seattle to take on OSA FC, winning 4-3 in a penalty shootout after playing to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the 2017 US Open Cup. Reno goalkeeper Russ Klabough saved two penalties in the shootout, and Junior Burgos converted his to send Reno into the third round of the tournament.

OSA, an amateur team from the fourth-division NPSL, came out hot playing at home. They pressed Reno from the opening whistle and were rewarded 15 minutes into the match, when Eli Gordley collected the ball bouncing around in the six-yard box stabbing it home into the net.
Buoyed by the goal, OSA kept up the pressure, hitting the crossbar twice in ten minutes, but Reno turned the game around and equalized in the 30th minute. Cameron Vickers laid a pass toward goal to Dembakwi Yomba, who used his strength to hold off the OSA defense and his finesse to slot the ball into the net.

Reno controlled most of the rest of regulation, and Mackenzie Pridham hit the crossbar himself. The road team had three glorious chances in quick succession to score the winning goal in second-half stoppage time. The best of those chances required a game-saving tackle from behind from OSA defender Beau Blanchard to stop a sure Reno goal.

Neither team could find the same level of inspiration in the 30 minutes of extra time – although OSA goalkeeper Joshua Adachi was forced into making several fine saves – so on it went to penalties.

Blanchard shot first for OSA and had his effort saved. The teams traded marks before Reno’s Antoine Hoppenot, a former Philadelphia Union player, blazed his effort over the bar to level the shootout. But Klabough gave Reno the advantage back by making a dramatic kick-save on OSA substitute Hamza Haddadi.

Neither team missed from the mark again. It came down to Reno’s final shooter, Junior Burgos, who coolly tucked his penalty into the net before racing into the corner to celebrate the hard-fought victory with his teammates.

OSA had also gone to penalties in their first round match against the Seattle Sounders U-23s. In that game, they played 120 minutes of scoreless soccer before making all 5 of their penalty kicks to advance – making an appearance in the second round of the tournament for the first time in their history. They’ll now turn their focus back to NPSL league play.

Reno entered the tournament as the first pro club from Nevada to qualify for the US Open Cup, and now they are the first to advance. The club’s reward for the victory is a Third Round US Open Cup match on May 31 at fellow USL club Sacramento Republic. The winner of that game will get the chance to face an MLS opponent in the fourth round of the tournament.

Reno Lineup: Klabough, Griffiths, Ward, Richards, Felipe, Casiple, Pridham, Ward, Silva, Burgos, Yomba

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Set piece goals lead San Francisco Deltas to comeback win in USOC debut

May 23, 2017 by Thomas Hodul

San Francisco Deltas logoThe Deltas scored two set piece goals to come from behind and avoid the Cupset against the PDL Burlingame Dragons. Kyle Bekker provided the two deadly free kicks from similar spots on the field that resulted in a goal in each half. The comeback victory propelled the Deltas to their first-ever Open Cup victory and into the 3rd round to face Phoenix Rising. The winner of that match will travel to take on the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) in Round 4.

The PDL Burlingame Dragons did not make the game easy on the Deltas as they showed no fear early in the match. They forced the Deltas to defend deep in their own half and work for every 50-50 ball.

“I want to highlight the work of the Burlingame (Dragons) , because it’s always tough to play Cup games. In every country in the world, you always have surprises, and you have to play a team that has more to win than to lose,” said Deltas’ Head Coach Marc Dos Santos. “Burlingame created problems. They were a good team today.”

The first major chance the Dragons created was in the 26th minute when Matt Wiesenfarth was in on goal and forced a big save out of the Deltas’ keeper, Steward Ceus. Moments later, in the 28th minute, it was Dragons midfielder Khalid Arramdani’s turn to force another big stop out of Ceus.

The Dragons wouldn’t give up after these two big saves and kept the pressure up. They were justly rewarded for their team’s efforts and overall good play in the first half hour when in the 29th minute, Jamael Cox found the back of the net to give the Dragons the lead.

In the final 15 minutes of the 1st half, the Deltas climbed their way back into the match and eventually scored the equalizer near the end of the first half. Kyle Bekker whipped in a dangerous ball that was glanced into the back of the net by Reiner Ferreira to level the score at one heading into the break.

Marc Dos Santos told his players at the half: “Guys we got our warning.” He then went on to say in the interview that “two NASL teams got knocked out today by PDL teams. You know when you play one game, anybody could beat anybody. It’s a question of mentality.”

The Deltas came out of the 2nd half much more dominant than in the 1st half, and started to really control the game. “The 2nd half it was all us. They created problems, but a lot of it was long play and 50-50 balls that we knew we would have to be very aggressive on the second ball,” said Dos Santos.

The go ahead goal would come for the Deltas in the 63rd minute, when Bekker played another good free kick in that Jackson played back across the face of the goal to find Tommy Heinemann sliding in on the post for the go ahead goal.

“In soccer games, set plays are part of it and it’s something that we work a lot on and it’s something that with the patterns we have and the plays we have, we give a lot of importance to it. At the end of the day you have to find a way of getting results and that’s what we’ve been doing,” said the Deltas’ Coach.

The Deltas would then go on to hang tough and see out the 2-1 victory to advance to the 3rd round. “We knew it would be tough, but at the end of the day, again we find the way to win and that part of our mentality, that part of what we are building, and it’s just good to qualify”.

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Sacramento Republic overcome poor league form with emphatic win vs. Anahuac FC

May 23, 2017 by Evan Ream

Sacramento Republic logo

If any team appeared prime for upsetting heading into the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, it was Sacramento Republic FC.

In the midst of an 0-5-1 run in USL play in which the club had failed to score a goal in a club-record 563 minutes, the Republic were in arguably the worst form of their history, and facing an FC Anahuac side that had just come off an opportunistic penalty kick victory over the Sonoma County Sol.

But from minute one until the final whistle, this game was all Republic all the time as the Sacramento club ended their drought in an emphatic fashion: a 4-0 victory that advanced them to a third round game against USL expansion club Reno 1868 FC. The winner will host Real Salt Lake of MLS in Round 4.

“It’s been ages since we scored a goal, you never come out in front of guys and make excuses,” said Republic head coach Paul Buckle. “We’ve not found the back of the net in these games and it’s cost us, it’s cost us a lot of games. It’s been a very difficult time, and it still is.

“Any level of football, against any level of opposition, you’re going to come unstuck, as we did last year,” he added. “I thought the players, first of all, we approached the game in the right manner. I asked the boys to forget what had gone on before and focus on being on the front foot and being on a tempo, and we did. I think all night, we actually got better.”

English striker Harry Williams was the star on the night, becoming the third Republic player to tally multiple goals in the club’s nine-game Open Cup history.

Set up on crosses from wing back Elliot Hord, Williams struck in the 12th and 15th minutes to put the game out of reach early and become the Republic’s first goalscorer in over a month.
“It’s about time, isn’t it?” Williams said after the match.

He was joined on the scoresheet midway through the second half by substitute, and birthday boy, Wilson Kneeshaw, who was brought down in the penalty box and stepped up to send Anahuac goalkeeper Angel Alvarez the wrong way.

After not having scored for so long, the Republic sent waves of attackers forward until the last minute of the game, and were again rewarded when Trinidad and Tobago international Trevin Caeser broke through on goal in the left side of the box.

Though Caeser’s shot was saved by Alvarez, the rebound fell to fellow substitute Daniel Trickett-Smith, and the ex-Liverpool youth player struck a side volley into the back of the net that caused the crowd of 5,308 at Papa Murphy’s Park to erupt in exuberance.

With the win, the Republic improved to 6-2-1 in all-time Open Cup play, with the draw coming as a heartbreaking penalty kick loss in 2015 to the San Jose Earthquakes.

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: One mistake in extra time sends LA Wolves past Chula Vista FC

May 23, 2017 by Omar Avalos

LA Wolves Los Angeles Wolves

Soccer observers truly keen on LA Wolves and Chula Vista FC expected an even match by two clubs with similar possession-based style. This one had the makings of a chess match, a coach’s game, one in which the first team to make a mistake would pay dearly. It took 115 minutes for that mistake to occur in the form of a penalty kick awarded to the Wolves that striker Paolo Cardozo slammed into the upper right corner with a left-footed shot, enough to lift LA Wolves over Chula Vista 1-0. The win sets up a third round match with USL side Orange County SC, once again at Azusa Pacific University.

The match was a deadlock all throughout, with the Wolves creating some chances, but with greater difficulty and certainly less comfort than their first round match versus San Diego Zest. The few clear chances that they did create ended poorly, complicating the game for them.

And complicated it most certainly was for LA Wolves who had 5 yellow cards on the night, 2 of them in the first half, and 2 more by the 65th minute. This was a testament to CVFC’s individual skill on possession, with their players able to create their own space and get forward, needing to be cut down by fouls. CVFC had two yellow cards on the night and a pardoned card very late in the match on a tackle from behind on striker Chuck Pitts that very easily could’ve been a yellow, if not a red card.

After the match, Wolves head coach Eric Wynalda said, “We’re lucky to get through. We are. We need to say that. We had some injuries prior to the game so we had to shuffle things around in our midfield, and clearly it affected us. You have to really say that there was a lot of great technical ability on the other side of the ball tonight. The only good news is that we didn’t get scored on. Our keeper kept us in the game and we could’ve done better with our chances, but the truth is, all in all it was a very good game.”

When asked if this was the type of match he expected, Wynalda said, “We knew that this was a very good team and they made some additions from the last time we played them. This is what this tournament is about. There’s a lot of passion and a lot of heart.”

Goalscorer Paolo Cardozo said, “It was a very good, very intense match and we came out to fight to the end. Thank God we got the win.” On Chula Vista FC he added, “They’re a very good, very ambitious and difficult rival.”

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Orange County SC coast past FC Golden State Force to snap winless streak

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup can be a real surprise when it comes to upstart teams like the PDL’s FC Golden State Force but the USL’s oldest club on the West Coast, the newly labelled Orange County Soccer Club was dominant winning 5-2 in the Second Round at Citrus College in Glendora, Calif.

The win brings an end to a four-game winless streak for Orange County in the tournament. The last Open Cup win for Orange County came in 2013 when they defeated the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion in Round 2. After dropping a 2-1 decision to Chivas USA (MLS), they went on to lose three consecutive opening round games to amateur teams (Fresno Fuego, PSA Elite, LA Wolves FC).

Orange County opened the scoring with two fairly easy goals in the first 15 minutes from Victor Pineda and Monday Etim. Golden State kept fighting on and an attacking run in the 20th minute ended up on a wayward hand of an Orange County defender in the penalty area sending Mark Verso to the spot for a penalty that halved the deficit.

This was quickly voided by an Orange County attacking free kick in the 25th minute which hit a hand in the wall giving Orange County’s Dutch forward Jerry van Ewijk a converted penalty kick for the visitors to make it 3-1.

Pineda almost scored again right before the break with a 30-yard screamer that hit the center of the crossbar and bounced mere inches from being a fourth goal.

Orange County’s Cabo Verdean international Wuilito Fernandes scored an early goal 15 seconds after the second-half kickoff, and Verso responded in kind a minute later. Eventually play slowed down until a string of Orange County passes sent Etim to the right hand attacking corner flag putting in a cross that perfectly landed at the feet of Fernandes to finish the scoring for the night at the 55th minute.

The tempo of the rest of the game slowed down significantly and a lot of fouls were committed with the referee reaching for her pocket more often than would be expected for a game with a three-goal margin. It culminated in the 71st minute with a deliberate foul committed by Verso which landed him a yellow card. After the referee awarded a foul to Orange County, defender Saloman Wbias appeared to retaliate towards Verso as he was walking away from the site of the foul in the middle of the field. The referee without hesitation sent off Wbias, and despite Orange County playing the remainder of the game with 10 men, Golden State could not find another tally.

After the match Fernandes praised his teammates heart, discipline and work rate and was impressed by the creativity of their lower division opposition. Also despite Orange County Coach Logan Pause saying that early Cup games can sometimes be the hardest, that the team “came with the right mentality”.

FC Golden State Force Assistant Coach Salvador Moran was impressed with his charges especially their relentless attack while they had a man advantage towards the end. However despite having nothing to lose, he noted their professional USL opposition capitalized on their shortcomings.

Orange County will take on host LA Wolves in the Third Round, a team that knocked them out of their first cup match last year. The winner will take on the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer in Carson, Calif.

2017 US Open Cup Round 2: Without Didier Drogba, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Phoenix Rising win opener vs. Fresno Fuego

Phoenix Rising FC moved into the Third Round of the 2017 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 3-1 victory over the Fresno Fuego at Fresno State Soccer Field on Wednesday night.

“A lot of our guys who don’t get normal minutes stepped up, and it was good professional performance,” Phoenix Rising FC interim head coach Rick Schantz said. “It’s important to get wins in the Open Cup, and to be on to the next round is huge. Ultimately we want to get an MLS team in Phoenix, and this is what we are supposed to do.”

Phoenix Rising broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when Kody Wakasa finished a strike off of a corner kick, beating Fuego goalkeeper Agustin Rey near post for the 1-0 advantage.

After a Fuego giveaway one minute later in midfield, Eric Avila struck Mike Seth’s cross into the back of the net to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

In the 54th minute, Seth would get a goal of is own on a tap in to make it 3-0.

“We had one sleepy moment on that corner kick and we paid the price for it,” Fuego head coach Brian Zwaschka said. “Right after that, we left ourselves a little to open, and they punished us. Apart of that, I thought it was a good performance. We created dangerous chances, but credit to their goalkeeper, he kept them in it.”

The Fuego got a goal back in the 59th minute when substitute Fellipe Oliveira made it 3-1, but that was all Fresno could get past Phoenix goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

Zwaschka was visibly frustrated on the touchline after Abraham Campos received a red card in the 83rd minute, and he felt like it changed the momentum of the match.

“In the second half, we lost focus, and being a man down later was disappointing,” Zwaschka said. “We tied our hands behind our backs after that.”

With the favorable result, Schantz loved seeing his squad players step up so his starters could get some rest before they play San Antonio FC in league play.

“I thought Blair Gavin did a really good job for us in midfield,” Schantz said. “J.J. Greer was another standout, but goalkeeper Josh Cohen was fantastic for us. He made some important saves, and it kept the team confident.”

Phoenix, who played without their recent high-profile signings Didier Drogba and Shaun Wright-Phillips, will host NASL’s San Francisco Deltas in the Third Round of the Open Cup on May 31. The winner of that match will travel to take on the San Jose Earthquakes of Major League Soccer in Round 4.
