2016 US Open Cup qualifying

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Former Chivas player helps La Maquina eliminate 2015 darlings Chula Vista FC, 4-0 (video)

La Maquina wouldn’t mind having the kind of success Chula Vista FC had in last season’s US Open Cup.

But first, La Maquina had to beat Chula Vista FC.

Mission accomplished.

La Maquina put in a machine-line performance in a 4-0 win over Chula Vista FC to earn a berth in the final round of the open division qualifying tournament, which takes place next April.

One of the best teams in the strong Los Angeles-based United Premier Soccer League, which sent nine teams to the tournament this year – including LA Wolves FC, Del Rey City and Cal FC. The 2015 US Open Cup Division 4 $15,000 prize winner PSA Elite also competes in the league. La Maquina is attempting to qualify for the Open Cup for the first time.

While it might have been hampered by the absence of four starters and hindered by not having practiced together in several months, it didn’t show in the effort.

La Maquina took a 1-0 halftime lead after former Concordia University (Calif.) standout Edgar Orozco tallied the first of his three assists, delivering a cross to former C.D. Guadalajera and Pachuca player Edwin Borboa, who beat a pair of defenders and fired the ball into the back of the net.

After halftime, La Maquina poured it on with a second goal around the 60th minute. Alejandro Velasquez delivered a ball to former Laredo Heat (PDL) player Rodolfo Godinez who made it 2-0.

“The second goal really brought (Chula Vista FC) down,” said La Maquina assistant coach Edson Martinez. “It was a good game and Chula Vista is really good, but our team has been playing together for five to seven years and they know how to play.”

After the second goal, La Maquina had Chula Vista on their heels and they took advantage of it. Five minutes later, Orozco and Borboa linked up on another cross. Borboa, who scored in their first round win over Strikers FC South Coast, has been on a tear this season, scoring 37 goals in 16 UPSL matches.

In the 75th minute, Orozco helped put the game away as he assisted on a goal by Jose Castro, who played alongside his identical twin brother Rosendo.

Martinez says if the team can keep up its cohesion and family-like chemistry, they can replicate Chula Vista, which garnered attention in last year’s tournament after upsetting the USL’s Arizona United 3-0. But due to the having several members of the team who are soccer coaches at youth academies or at college programs, that could prove to be difficult.

“Honestly, I’m pretty sure we can be the next (US Open Cup) Cinderella story,” said Martinez, who also acts as the team’s general manager. “We’ve played against universities and beat them, we’ve played against all the (local) teams who have qualified for the Open Cup and we’ve beaten them. We’ve won games against teams from Mexico, but we’ve never been on the map because we’ve never entered the US Open Cup.”

Martinez is hoping the team can qualify and put their names on the American soccer map, like Cal FC, Chula Vista FC and PSA Elite before them.

The players on their roster have a lot of college, professional and international experience. They have former US youth internationals like Carlos Borja (Chivas USA), David Arviuz (Orange County Blues, Chivas USA) and Oscar Reyes (UCLA, US Beach Soccer National Team) in addition to Barboa and others.

In two weeks, La Maquina have another big game as they will take on San Nicolas in the UPSL Quarterfinals.

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: CD Motagua pulls away from Queen City United, 5-2, advance to Round 3 (video)

CD Motagua of New Orleans took another step toward being the first amateur team from Louisiana to qualify for the US Open Cup in the modern era after defeating a well-traveled Queen City United side 5-2 on Saturday in the second round of the 2016 US Open Cup qualifying tournament.

Coming out of the Louisiana Premier League, CD Motagua would be the first amateur team from the state since the modern era began in 1995. Motagua plays in the final round of Open Cup qualifying in April 2016.

Charlotte-based Queen City United arrived at Pan American Stadium in New Orleans after traveling more than 700 miles, but there were no signs of road-weary legs as they came out flying with a high-pressure approach and kept Motagua on their toes.

After the two teams canceled each other out for the opening 15 minutes, Motagua started to control the game and create some chances.

Around the 22nd minute, Motagua’s Stuart Hayers had a bad pass in the defense which resulted in a counterattack by Queen City. Jary Barahona was able to get enough space in the final third and slotted home the first goal of the match.

The match began to pick up and Motagua began to regain control of the game. Three minutes later, Leo Feirrera de Barros slotted home Motagua’s first goal with a perfect through ball by Reece Wilson to tie the game.

Motagua had a few chances before the half but nothing too threatening, but enough to keep the pressure on the visitors.

The second half started out in Motagua’s favor as they got on the board quickly with a header by Leo Feirrera de Barros from a Steven Morris cross around the 50th minute.

A few minutes later, United tied the game at 2-2.

From then on, it was all Motagua.

In the 63rd minute, with the wind at Motagua’s back, Stuart Hayers sent in a heavy-footed cross from about 35 yards. With a little assistance from the wind, and some distraction from forward Reece Wilson, it sailed over the keeper’s hands and into the back of the net to give Motagua a 3-2 lead.

Around the 71st minute, Motagua doubled their lead off well-struck 35-yard free kick from Honduran defender Jaime Rosales.

Motagua’s fifth and final goal came from another free kick, this time from Honduran midfielder Fernando Vargas (VIDEO BELOW).

How about this free kick from CD Motagua of New Orleans’ Fernando Vargas.

UPDATE: Click here for a review of the final eight games of Round 2.

Eight spots in the third and final round of qualifying are up for grabs this weekend as we turn our attention (mostly) out west. Three games will take place on Saturday, Nov. 21 while the other five will be played on Sunday, Nov. 22.

You can keep up to date with all of the games this weekend by following and using the hashtag #USOC2016 on Twitter. If you’re attending any of the games, use that same hashtag to share your photos and videos on Twitter and Instagram.

The winners of these games will join the six teams that have already advanced to the final round. The matchups for Round 3 will be announced in January.

Check out a preview of each game and you can check out the entire first round results and second round schedule below.

SATURDAY, NOV. 21

Queen City United (NC) at CD Motagua of New Orleans (LA)
Pan American Stadium; New Orleans, LA – 8 p.m. EST
UPDATE: CD Motagua 5:2 Queen City United

This is the only inter-state matchup on the schedule this weekend. CD Motagua of New Orleans got here by way of a forfeit when Tobacco Road FC, also of North Carolina, withdrew on Sept. 30. Queen City United will carry on and make the 700 mile trip to the bayou after cruising to a 4-1 win over Charlotte Sporting Soccer Academy FC in Round 1. As their name might suggest, CD Motagua were founded in tribute to the Honduras professional side of the same name. They play in the latin influenced Liga Islano system in New Orleans and are aiming to become the first Louisiana-based amateur club to qualify for the Open Cup in the Modern Era. Queen City United, who are seeking their first tournament berth, call the National Soccer League home.

La Maquina (South CA) at Chula Vista FC (South CA)
Eastlake High; Chula Vista, CA – 9 p.m. EST
UPDATE: La Maquina 4:0 Chula Vista FC

The Santa Ana, Calif.-based La Maquina are attempting to qualify for the US Open Cup for the first time and they began that journey with a 3-2 Round 1 win over their United Premier League rivals Strikers FC South Coast. Chula Vista FC, meanwhile, are anxious to get back to their second straight Open Cup. They shocked USL side Arizona United in the 2015 edition of the tournament last spring. Chula Vista will be missing team captain Luis Alvarado, who tore his MCL in the team’s 5-2 comeback win over Temecula FC in Round 1. His presence will be missed as his side bring back just eight players from the team that beat Arizona United and only just won their first league game recently. Cal FC (South CA) at LA Wolves FC (South CA)
Toyota Sports Complex (Field 1); Torrance, CA – 10:30 p.m. EST
UPDATE: LA Wolves FC 2:1 Cal FC

The LA Wolves celebrate one of their goals in a 2-1 win over Del Rey City SC in Round 1 of the 2016 US Open Cup qualifying tournament.
The LA Wolves celebrate one of their goals in a 2-1 win over Del Rey City SC in Round 1 of the 2016 US Open Cup qualifying tournament.

Speaking of former Open Cup darlings, Cal FC are looking to get back to the tournament that put them on the map in 2012, when they took down MLS side Portland Timbers in one of the most incredible Open Cup upsets ever. They’re in good form after crushing Valley United 4-0 in Round 1. LA Wolves are looking to make some history of their own after winning their first ever qualifying match a few weeks ago against Del Rey City FC. They’ll be ready for anything after they needed an 85th minute goal from Suri Keira just to get to this point.

SUNDAY, NOV. 22

Boca Raton FC (FL) at Uruguay Kendall (FL)
Broward College South Campus; Pembroke Pines, FL – 3:30 p.m.

The lone game in the Eastern Time Zone will feature a pair of talented teams in Pembroke Pines, Fla. Uruguay Kendall FC, as their name suggests, has a roster influenced heavily by South America. Former Montevideo Wanderers (Uruguay) first teamer Alexander Joseph will feature as well as Mauricio Costa, who started in goal for Colombia’s U-17 World Cup team in 2007. Boca Raton FC feature a pair of former professionals as well: Nickardo Blake, formerly of Real Salt Lake and Fort Luaderdale Strikers, and Scott Gordon, formerly of FC Dallas, Chivas USA, and Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Uruguay Kendall FC beat local rivals Red Force 3-0 in Round 1 while Boca Raton defeated Real Miami CF 2-1 in extra time after regulation ended 0-0. These two sides met in the inaugural American Premier Soccer League final, where Boca Raton came away victorious, 1-0, after Uruguay Kendall received not one, but two red cards early in the second half.

Colorado Rush (CO) at Harpo’s FC (CO)
Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (Field 8); Commerce City, CO – 4 p.m. EST

Harpo's FC and the Colorado Rush won't be playing on this field, but at one of the fields just outside the stadium.
Harpo’s FC and the Colorado Rush won’t be playing on this field, but at one of the fields just outside the stadium.

Boulder pub side Harpo’s FC are looking to qualify for the second year in a row after eliminating the KC Athletics (USASA) and the PDL’s BYU Cougars in last year’s competition before falling just short against the USL’s Colorado Springs Switchbacks, 2-1. Harpo’s handled Colorado Rovers pretty easily, winning 4-1 in Round 1 of qualifying. Colorado Rush beat another Boulder side, FC Boulder, in Round 1 by a score of 5-2. The two sides will duke it out under the bright lights of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, the Commerce City home to MLS side Colorado Rapids. They will play on field No. 8 of the DSG complex.

Davis Legacy (NCA) at San Francisco City FC (NCA)
Kezar Stadium; San Francisco, Calif. – 5 p.m.

A 19th minute penalty kick was all the Davis Legacy needed to win their first-ever Open Cup qualifier in Round 1. They just formed in the spring of 2015 and, after beating IFX Ballistic, are looking to burst onto the Open Cup scene. Standing in their way is fan-owned San Francisco City FC, who qualified for the 2015 Open Cup and are anxious to get back. In the 2015 tournament, City lost a tight game to Cal FC in the Preliminary Round. The two sides will meet in San Francisco’s historic Kezar Stadium. You find more info about San Francisco City in this in-depth profile.

San Nicolas (SCA) at Real Sociedad (SCA)
St. John Bosco Football Stadium; Bellflower, Calif. – 7:30 p.m.

San Nicholas’ qualifying run has been, if nothing else, very strange up to this point. They advanced via forfeit after Round 1 opponents Corinthians USA failed to register the minimum number of players. The two teams played each other anyway and San Nicolas won 2-0 in a game that was cut short by the stadium lights going out unexpectedly. They’ll be hoping their most famous player, Cuban international and former Chivas USA player Maykel Galindo, makes a full recovery after he left the Round 1 “contest” with an injury. Real Sociedad will be brimming with confidence after battling back to tie Round 1 opponents Ozzy’s Laguna not once, but twice, and then prevailing in the ensuing penalty kick shootout.

Outbreak FC at San Pedro Monsters FC
Toyota Sports Complex (Field 1); Torrance, CA – 10:30 p.m.

Outbreak FC, top of the SoCal Premier League standings, took care of business in Round 1 against cellar dwellers Buena Park FC by a score of 5-1. Not to be outdone, San Pedro Monsters won their first round game by a score of 9-0 against Chino Hills-based Footballers Academy. The Monsters will be hoping for another stellar performance from Andy Nunez, who scored four times in Round 1. Both sides are seeking their first-ever Open Cup berth.

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Southie FC last Mass. team left standing after shutting out GPS Omens

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

With Worcester FC losing on Saturday night, Southie FC and GPS Omens were the final two open division amateur teams left in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup qualifying tournament from all of the New England states. In the end, there could be only one and it was Southie FC who would advance to the final round of qualifying with a 4-0 win.

After the opening kickoff, Southie came out as the aggressor and it paid off almost immediately. UMass Amherst product Chris Stoker played an through ball to Tim Ritter who held off a GPS defender and scored three minutes into the match.

Southie’s second was provided, again, by Stoker who released the pacey Trevor Hoxsie to calmly finish past the GPS keeper.

GPS caused problems with their two towering center forwards, including former Colorado Rapids draftee Keith Caldwell who had a pair of goals and a two more assists in GPS’ Round 1 win over Boston Olympiakos. Due, in large part, to the play of Harrison McGeady, Caldwell was unable to create any clear-cut chances to really concern Colin O’Donnell in goal.

southie-fc-logoSouthie’s third goal came around the 35th minute Hoxsie released Stoker who crossed the ball to Anthony Baumann to tap in and put Southie in a very strong position heading into the halftime break.

GPS, who were under the names GPS Massachusetts and Mass Premier Soccer in previous years, came out on the front foot in the second half and had Southie pinned into its defensive third but, again, couldn’t create any quality chances. Southie were always dangerous on the break and won a free kick approximately 25 yards out midway through the second half. Before GPS could sort out its 4-man wall, Roy Sandeman, one of the seven players on the field who played college ball for Providence College (Ritter, Baumann, McGeady, Stoker, Thomas Ballenthin and Sean Bakhtiari) who made an impact on this day, quickly whipped the free kick over the GPS goalkeeper, off the underside of the crossbar and across the line to put the game out of reach.

GPS continued to probe, and Charlie Romero produced a fine save from O’Donnell but GPS ultimately couldn’t find a way through and they were eliminated. The loss would deny GPS a USASA record-tying fourth straight trip to the US Open Cup and it put Southie FC one win away from their first-ever berth in the tournament. It was also the second straight shutout for Southie, who competes in the Massachusetts State Soccer League, after they defeated Battery Park Gunners in Round 1, 2-0.

“Having played for GPS the last 3 seasons I knew what we were up against and knew that we had to have a team-first focus in order to advance,” said Sandeman. “I thought we out-fought and out-competed GPS in the early stages which really set the foundation for the rest of the game. GPS are such a great team and have a fantastic set of lads, but I am really proud of our boys’ commitment and performance tonight.”

2016 US Open Cup qualifying review: New York Pancyprian Freedoms, four others win Round 2 matches

The first weekend of the second round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup open division qualifying tournament is in the books and five East Coast teams emerged victorious. Three-time US Open Cup champion New York Pancyprian Freedoms join four other teams seeking their first-ever berth in the tournament.

This weekend’s five winners join the North Texas Rayados in the third and final round after the International Portland Select (Oregon) withdrew from the tournament because they were unable to make the trip to Dallas.

The rest of the second round will take place next weekend (Nov. 21-22) with eight games in California, Louisiana, Florida and Colorado.

The final round of qualifying will take place in April of 2016 and the draw for that round will be announced sometime after Jan. 1.

Here is a brief summary of each game (updated results and schedule below):

Lansdowne Bhoys (East NY) 5:0 Worcester FC (MA) – MATCH REPORT

A match that started out evenly-played eventually turned into a rout as Worcester FC fell 5-0 to Lansdowne Bhoys FC in Saturday’s second qualifying round of the 2016 US Open Cup tournament at Foley Stadium in Worcester, Mass. The Bhoys are the only team of the round to win on the road

NY Pancyprian Freedoms (East NY) 2:1 Jersey Shore Boca (NJ) – MATCH REPORT

The Freedoms, who won the US Open Cup three times in the 1980s, emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over the Garden State’s last representative. Former New York Red Bulls and Long Island Rough Riders player Chris Megaloudis scored the game-winner just before halftime to bring the Freedoms one step closer to qualifying for the first time since 2011.

Aromas Café FC 3:1 Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks FC (DC/VA) – MATCH REPORT

The first-year entry from Virginia defeated the Aegean Hawks 3-1 to put themselves one step away from qualifying for the 103rd edition of the US Open Cup. Playing on the same field that he played his high school ball, Jake Van Yahres scored a pair of goals, and was involved in the third goal to lead the way into the final round.

West Chester United (East PA) 3:0 Salone FC (East PA) – MATCH REPORT

Since 2011, West Chester United has come close every season to qualifying for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, but the four-time Eastern Pennsylvania Open Cup champion as yet has not been able to make the tournament. West Chester is yet again close to its goal, one win away from a berth in the tournament after a 3-0 victory over Salone FC. Amherst College graduate and 2012 NCAA Division III 1st team All-American Julien Aoyama had two goals and an assist, and Widener University men’s soccer assistant coach Matt Poole contributed a goal in the comfortable victory.

Southie FC (MA) 4:0 GPS Omens (MA) – MATCH REPORT

Southie FC is the last Massachusetts team left standing in the tournament after a 4-0 win over Global Premier Soccer (GPS) Omens. Southie scored a trio of first half goals and didn’t look back as they seek the club’s first-ever US Open Cup berth.

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

Since 2011, West Chester United has come close every season to qualifying for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, but the four-time Eastern Pennsylvania Open Cup champion has not been able to make the tournament.

West Chester’s goals came after a disjointed start; it took about 20 minutes for the home side to start controlling the game.

“We went from a 4-4-2 to a 4-5-1,” West Chester head coach Blaise Santangelo said. “We started connecting a little more and started playing well.”

That change in formation almost immediately led to a goal. In the 27th minute, Christian Benner of West Chester University got past the defense down the right side of the field. He put a cross into the Salone box that Aoyama easily tapped home.

Salone FC, of the Philadelphia Premier Soccer League, gave up another goal 12 minutes later, when Poole beat the offside trap and scored past the onrushing Salone keeper.

Prior to halftime, the away side made two substitutions, changing its tactics to push as many men forward as possible. The first half ended without any more scoring, but United was able to take advantage of these tactics early in the second half.

Less than 10 minutes into the second stanza, Benner got a second assist after a nifty interchange with Eric Giovagnoli, a senior at Eastern University. After a quick give-and-go with Giovagnoli, Benner found Aoyama in the center of the box. Aoyama had no trouble bagging his second goal of the game.

Up 3-0, West Chester was content to let Salone push forward. United turned this pressure into quick counter attacks, but were left wanting more on the offensive side of the field. Whether it was missed final passes, poor shots, or great saves from the Salone goalie, West Chester just could not find another goal.

Santangelo said, “We messed around with the ball a little bit too much. We left some goals on the field.”

Despite leaving goals on the field, West Chester cruised to a 3-0 victory and a spot in the final round of 2016 Open Cup qualifying tournament. That round is scheduled for April of 2016, with matchups to be announced at some point after the new year.

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Aromas Cafe takes out Aegean Hawks 3-1 to reach final round (video)

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

Over the last 20 years, there has only been two USASA clubs from the state of Virginia (Mo’s Sport Shop in 1996 and Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks in 2007, 2009) to qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. On Sunday, Aromas Cafe FC of Charlottesville, Va. put themselves one step closer to joining that club with a 3-1 win over the Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks.

Jake Van Yahres scored a pair of goals to lead the way at Charlottesville High School, the same place that he played his high school ball.

Aromas Cafe, making their first attempt at qualifying for the Open Cup, will advance to the final round of the qualifying tournament which is scheduled to take place in April of 2016. Their opponent won’t be announced by the US Soccer Federation until after Jan. 1.

Aromas opened the scoring around the 40th minute when Ty Clare received the ball outside the 18-yard box with his back to the goal. He turned and chipped a pass behind the defense to an onrushing Van Yahres who fired a low shot that the goalkeeper got a piece of, but was unable to keep it out.

About 10 minutes into the second half, they doubled the lead with Ivan Arapovic playing a long searching ball forward for Van Yahres to run onto. Van Yahres, who played his college ball at Virginia Commonwealth, muscled his way past two defenders and was able to chip the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper.

Aromas finished off the scoring through Van Yahres who combined with Price Thomas for the third goal. Thomas made a long dribbling run out of the midfield to the edge of the 18 and laid it off to Van Yahres, who rifled a shot on goal that was saved by the Hawks netminder. Unfortunately for the goalkeeper, he was unable to control the rebound and Luke Oostdyk, who was trailing the play pounced on the loose ball to put the game away.

“You only get one career in soccer, and a lot of times you’re not able to play at a high level with friends that you’ve been with for a while,” Van Yahres told NBC29 after the match. “I’m 27, and this is something I probably won’t get to do again, so it’s a one-time thing. Two goals, I get the attention, but everyone is doing something that deserves it as well.”

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Lansdowne Bhoys cruise to 5-0 road win over Worcester FC

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

A match that started out evenly-played eventually turned into a demolition as Worcester FC fell 5-0 to Lansdowne Bhoys FC in Saturday’s second qualifying round of the 2016 US Open Cup tournament at Foley Stadium in Worcester, Mass.

Ovan Oakley opened the account in the 27th minute while Sikele Sylvester allowed the guests to go into halftime with a two-goal advantage after he tallied in the 33rd minute. The Bhoys put the game out of reach with second half goals by Karim Russell and Ian Sweeney, and then Gareth McGlynn scribbled his name on the scoresheet in stoppage time to put an exclamation point on the comprehensive victory.

With the win, Lansdowne Bhoys advance to the third qualifying round, which will take place during the weekend of Apr. 2-3, 2016. The loss ended Worcester’s first foray in US Open Cup qualifying only months after they were established.

“We didn’t have our whole team,” Worcester keeper Cam Staples said. “We were missing our (first-choice) right back, and that’s where they decided they wanted to come down and attack.”

Although temperatures dipped into the low-30s at kickoff, the early action kept the hardy spectators on the edge of their seats.

Inside of four minutes, Bhoys midfielder Daryl Kavanagh tested Worcester keeper Cam Staples with a blast from the left flank. Not long after, Worcester made a bid for the opener when Braima Samati slithered through the backline and beat keeper Abdoukarim Danso, who breathed a heavy sigh of relief when the shot veered wide of the woodwork in the 16th minute.

Samati’s miss proved to be the best chance for Worcester to take control of the match before Lansdowne unleashed an offensive that was for too much for the hosts to handle.

On a quick break, Ovan raced onto a through ball from Karl Sjostrom that split the Worcester backline before he froze Staples and sent it through to put Lansdowne ahead in the 27th minute.

The Bhoys wasted little time building upon the Ovan’s goal when Sjostrom crossed it for Sylvester, who coolly headed it through on the doorstep to put Worcester in a deeper ditch going into the 33rd minute.

Frustrated, but far from finished, Worcester entered the second frame hoping to pull one back and make it anyone’s match. Marcus Pizzetti, who scored twice in their first qualifying round victory over Newport FC, entered the match at halftime in a move to strengthen the attack.

But getting stronger up front wasn’t enough to overcome the holes in the rear. Staples was forced to make a trio of heady saves off his line early in the second stanza, but it wasn’t nearly enough to quiet Lansdowne’s lively attack.

Just after the hour, Russell exploited an opening and buried his close range shot to put the game well out of reach.

“We pressed up too high,” Staples said. “They figured it out and they just kept playing through balls and that’s what got us – those through balls.”

Twelve minutes later, Sweeney casually tapped through a cross through from point blank range, and in stoppage time, McGlynn gave his teammates one more reason to celebrate when he bagged the fifth goal of the game.

“Our core group of guys weren’t here,” Staples said, “and that’s what we needed. We fought to the end. We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we didn’t quit until the 90th minute.”

2016 US Open Cup qualifying: Three-time champion NY Pancyprian Freedoms edge Jersey Shore Boca, 2-1

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

The New York Pancyprian Freedoms are one step closer to its first US Open Cup berth since 2011 after defeating Jersey Shore Boca 2-1 Saturday in a qualifying match for the 2016 tournament.

On a cold evening on the turf field at Randall’s Island, former New York Red Bulls and Long Island Rough Riders player Chris Megaloudis scored what proved to be the game-winner just before halftime.

The Freedoms, who won the US Open Cup three times in the 1980s, advance to the final round of qualifying against an opponent to be announced sometime after Jan. 1. The final round is scheduled for early April.

The teams spent the first five minutes feeling each other out, keeping the play mostly between the boxes, but that soft tempo would not last long. In the 12th minute, winger Keith Dejetl found some space just outside the Boca box and blasted a shot into the upper corner beating keeper Charles Cunliffe to take a 1-0 lead.

The play got physical when former New York Cosmos player Stefan Dimitrov went up for a header with James Nelson. Nelson came down holding his eye after an errant elbow caught him causing some bruising. The Boca midfielder had to come off for a few minutes for treatment.

The Jersey team ratcheting up pressure continuing to press forward into the Pancyprian half. In the 20th minute, defender Bryant Avalos pushed up during a Boca corner attempt and after New York failed to clear the ball, it bounced out to Avalos who fired an open shot over the bar from about 20 yards out.

The increase in intensity would pay off for Boca in the 41st minute when a through ball from Chris Katona beat the New York defense leaving Thomas Gray one-on-one with keeper, Nick Takarny. Gray pushed the ball smoothly past the sliding goalie to pull New Jersey level.

It looked like the game was headed into the halftime break all even until the final minute of the half arrived. New York striker Yannk Reyering would find Megaloudis open on the back post for an easy tap in that gave the Pancyprians their second lead of the game, 2-1.

New Jersey came out knowing they needed to change their strategy to get a second goal. They brought on midfielder Sean Casey to help direct traffic from in front of the defense. He would replace Christian Bonzinos to start the second half.

The second half played much different from the first. During the first 45, the referee called a handful of fouls for some aggressive play. In the second stanza, not only were there more fouls, but also more cautions. About 10 minutes into the half, Jersey Shore’s Katona was cautioned and nearly picked up a second five minutes later for a hard tackle.

In the 64the minute, Boca would change the formation again adding Michael Lyons to the team replacing James Nelson. A few minutes after that, Bryant Avalos would pick up a yellow caution as the referee worked to keep the play physical but fair.

New York would bring in their first substitute in the 73rd minute as Frank Spanos replaced Vasillis Atoniou giving the Pancyprians some fresh legs to keep up with the runs of the Boca attackers. It would prove to be a smart move by head coach, Stratis Mastrokyriakos. Even with New Jersey applying more and more pressure they were never able to put away the equalizer. Two more late subs, Panagiotis Halkidis for Keith Detejl and John Koutsounadis replaced former MLS player Jeff Matteo to eat away the final two minutes of stoppage time.

Following the game, Mastrokyriakos through a translator, commented that despite having to play at a neutral site (their home field, Belson Stadium at St John’s University, was unavailable for the match), the Pancyprians were still the better team for the majority of the game and had more opportunities. He is very happy that the team won and is advancing to the next round, it’s very important to the players and to the club.

MORE: Five teams advance to final round of qualifying in first weekend

Just five second round matches to preview for this weekend and they are all out on the East Coast. The US Soccer Federation also confirmed that Round 2 will have one fewer game as Oregon’s International Portland Select withdrew from the tournament over challenges related to traveling to their game against North Texas Rayados.

You can keep up to date with all of the games this weekend by following and using the hashtag #USOC2016 on Twitter. If you’re attending any of the games, use that same hashtag to share your photos and videos on Twitter and Instagram.

Check out a preview of each game and you can check out the entire second round schedule below.

Lansdowne Bhoys (East NY) at Worcester FC (MA)
Foley Stadium; Worcester, MA – Nov. 14, 7:15 p.m. EST
UPDATE: Lansdowne Bhoys 5:0 Worcester FC – MATCH REPORT

Not exactly “Yanks-Sawx”, but regional pride is still on the line in this one. Landsdowne Bhoys dispatched another New England side, Connecticut’s Newtown Pride FC, in Round 1 by a score of 3-0 in game that was played in the Bronx. Worchester FC, meanwhile, dispatched Rhode Island’s Newport FC 2-0 in Worcester. Bhoys will have to fight a short turnaround after they took on NY Greek American SC in the semifinals of the US Amateur Cup on Thursday. Worchester, meanwhile, will have had plenty of rest as their first round win over Newport FC was one of their first matches ever played as a club; they formed just this past summer. Both clubs are looking to qualify for the US Open Cup for the first time.

Jersey Shore Boca (NJ) at NY Pancyprian Freedoms (East NY)
Randall’s Island Field No. 75; Randall’s Island, NY – Nov. 14, 7 p.m. EST
UPDATE: NY Pancyprian Freedoms 2:1 Jersey Shore Boca – MATCH REPORT

This one features two teams who won close matches in the first round. Jersey Shore Boca edged South Jersey Elite Barons 2-1 in Brick, N.J. New York Pancyprian Freedoms, a three-time winner of this tournament (1980, 1982, 1983), actually needed extra time to defeat four-time winners New York Greek American SC, though they scored twice in the extra time for a somewhat comfortable finish. Jersey Shore Boca, whose name is in fact inspired by that team from Argentina, are one of the more seasoned sides in the tournament; they just celebrated their 37th birthday this year. The qualified for the first and only time back in 2012 when they lost their opening round game on the road to the PDL’s Michigan Bucks. The Pancyprian Freedoms, as you might surmise from their name, has a distinctive Greek flair and was founded back in 1974 and are looking to qualify for the first time since 2011.

Aegean Hawks FC (MD) at Aromas Café FC (DC/VA)
Charlottesville High School; Charlottesville, VA – Nov. 15, 3 p.m. EST

The Aegean Hawks won a thrilling nail-biter, 2-1, in extra time over the Maryland Bays. Aromas Café, meanwhile, dispatched Pennsylvania side Tartan Devils Oak Avalon, 3-1, in Charlottesville, Va. You’ve heard of “pub football” over in England. Well in Charlottesville they’re looking to make “café soccer” a thing as the newcomers look to qualify in their first year of Open Cup competition. They’ll be hoping for some home field magic against the Hawks, another squad representing Greek heritage when it was founded, who are no strangers to the Open Cup having qualified three times in the last nine years.

GPS Omens (MA) at Southie FC (MA)
Lawrence Veterans Memorial Stadium; Lawrence, Mass. – Nov. 15, 4 p.m.EST

It’s an all-Massachusetts matchup in Round 2. Southie FC took care of business with a 2-0 win over Battery Park Gunners in Round 1 while Global Premier Soccer (GPS) Omens cruised to a 5-0 victory against a shorthanded Boston Olympiakos squad; both games took place in the greater Roxbury area. Southie FC are looking to qualify for the Open Cup for the first time, but GPS (who were under the names GPS Massachusetts and Mass Premier Soccer) is looking to get into the tournament for a USASA record-tying fourth straight year. Keep an eye on GPS’ Keith Caldwell, a former Colorado Rapids draft pick, who scored twice and added two assists in their first round match.

Salone FC (East PA) at West Chester United (East PA)
WCUSC Turf Field; West Chester, Pa. – Nov. 15, 5 p.m.

We finish up with an all-Eastern Pennsylvania match. Salone FC squeaked by Vereinigung Erzgebirge with a 1-0 win on the road while playing a man down in the second half. West Chester United needed extra time to defeat Junior Lone Star FC. Salone’s roster, coaching staff, and team officials are primarily made up of immigrants from Sierra Leone. Salone FC, who have never qualified for the Open Cup have run into West Chester before in their quest to qualify for teh Open Cup for the first time. In 2012, Salone eliminated West Chester’s Over-30 team in the Eastern Pennsylvania qualifying tournament, only to be eliminated by the senior team in the Final, 1-0. They met again in the 2013 state semifinals and West Chester won 3-2. Salone will have their work cut out for them as West Chester are the reigning Amateur Cup national champions and are looking to qualify for the first time after falling in the USASA Region I tournament three of the last four years.
