As road teams huddle in bathrooms, warehouses, what are venue standards for US Open Cup qualifying?

Like all knockout competitions, open division qualifying for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is a grind that often has a charming edge to it lost in the later rounds when professional teams enter the fray. But there’s hardly anything romantic about a coach giving his team a halftime talk in a public bathroom or another team finding shelter from the cold in a storage shed only to be kicked out by a groundskeeper.

The North Texas Rayados scored twice in the final ten minutes to earn a comeback victory over CD Motagua New Orleans and clinch a spot in the 2018 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

2016 US Open Cup Round 1: State of Mississippi earns first tournament win as Brilla FC shuts out CD Motagua

CD Motagua Mississippi Brilla

Mississippi Brilla FC picked up their first ever US Open Cup win by beating CD Motagua of New Orleans 2-0. Goals from Brazilian Eduardo Cruz and Chilean Ignacio Flores provided the difference for the match. It was CD Motagua’s first ever Open Cup appearance and Brilla’s third.

2016 Meet the Underdogs: CD Motagua brings New Orleans flavor back to US Open Cup

CD Motagua has won the International Soccer League Association of New Orleans (ISLANO) the last three years and the Louisiana Premier League the last two years. Unfortunately for the team, they’ve had a tough time trying to qualify for the Cup.
