The win-or-go-home nature of the tournament resulted in a fiercely competitive game, which featured numerous yellow cards to both teams, a straight red card to Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon, and a post game melee resulting from the intense emotions surrounding the match.

2012 US Open Cup Quarterfinals: History repeats as Chivas USA edge Charlotte Eagles in dramatic finish

In the blink of an eye the Charlotte Eagles went from exuberance to having their Cinderella US Open Cup run come to an end. The Eagles were undone by two goals from Chivas USA forward Jose Correa in front of an estimated 1,500 fans at Titan Stadium, falling on a last-second goal reminiscent of the last time the two sides met in 2005.

The United States Soccer Federation announced the pairings and host scenarios for the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Semifinals set for July 10 or 11, two weeks following the conclusion of the Quarterfinals June 26 featuring five Major League Soccer teams and three sides from the third division USL Pro.

Former New York Red Bulls signee Sainey Touray became just the third player from a third division club to score twice against a MLS opponent in leading his Harrisburg City Islanders to a surprise 3-1 overtime victory in the Fourth Round of the US Open Cup, earning TheCup.us Player of the Round honors. The award is voted on by the staff of TheCup.us and a select panel of members of the North American Soccer Reporters.
