Sporting Kansas City are shooting for a third Open Cup title in six years, and a fourth overall, but the one that got it all started was the first one in 2004.

Playing at home at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City Wizards forward Igor Simutenkov broke the scoreless tie in the fifth minute of extra time with the golden goal that would lift the Wizards to the Open Cup championship and deny the Chicago Fire their second in a row. The 2004 tournament would be the last tournament to utilize the golden goal overtime system.
