The Seattle Sounders became the first Major League Soccer expansion team since the 1998 Chicago Fire to lift the Open Cup trophy in their inaugural season with an exciting 2-1 win over D.C. United. Roger Levesque’s goal in the 86th minute would prove to be the game-winner, as Seattle becomes only the fourth team since 1995 to win the Open Cup title on the road.

Pat Noonan capped off an outstanding tournament with a goal and two assists in the Final to earn two Player of the Round awards (Semifinals, Final) and was an easy choice as the Player of the Tournament. It was only the third time in the Professional Era (1995 – present) that the road team was victorious in the championship game.

The Chicago Fire set themselves apart from all other Major League Soccer clubs with their fourth Open Cup championship, beating Los Angeles 3-1 at Toyota Park. Andy Herron scored a goal (his fourth of the tournament) and assisted on another as the Costa Rican earned Player of the Round (Final) and Player of the Tournament honors.

Playing at home at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City Wizards forward Igor Simutenkov broke the scoreless tie in the fifth minute of extra time with the golden goal that would lift the Wizards to the Open Cup championship and deny the Chicago Fire their second in a row. The 2004 tournament would be the last tournament to utilize the golden goal overtime system.

The only thing more exciting than Alexi Lalas’ golden goal in overtime of the Semifinals that beat the Chicago Fire was Danny Califf’s golden goal in the championship game that helped the Los Angeles Galaxy beat the New England Revolution 2-1 for their first Open Cup title. The Galaxy became the first Los Angeles-based club to the win the Open Cup since 1981.
