2012 US Open Cup First Round: Fresno Fuego stops Turlock Express in its tracks 2-0

After playing at the home of the Fresno Fuego on their way to earning the first spot in the history of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for a US Club Soccer team, the Stanislaus United Turlock Express welcomed the Fuego to their home in Turlock, California in the First Round of the 2012 edition. The Fuego had not been in the Open Cup since their inaugural season in 2003, where a magical run saw them make it all the way to the Fourth Round and a date with the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy. Fresno, led by Abraham Campos, made their triumphant return by defeating the Express 2-0 to advance to the Second Round.

The two clubs started off the game slow, with the first half ending scoreless. Soon after second half kickoff, Campos, the soon-to-be junior at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, scored in the 47th minute to give Fresno the 1-0 lead. In the 59th minute, midfielder Nehemias Blanco earned a red card to bring the Fuego down to ten men. That didn’t hamper Fresno down as the second-year midfielder Campos struck again, this time in the 70th minute. He received an assist from Paul Islas, the Fresno native who is set to enter his senior season at Fresno Pacific University.

The two goals by Campos would turn out to be enough as the Fresno Fuego move on to the Second Round for the first time since that 2003 run. They will now play on the road against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the NASL on Tuesday, May 22. Kickoff time is set for 7:30 PM ET.

2012 Meet the USASA: PSA Elite from Irvine, CA

Welcome to our continuing series of Meet the USASA features where we annually profile the clubs representing the United States Adult Soccer Association in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Advancing from the four regional tournaments, these often unknown clubs have great stories to tell and each year, our goal is to allow fans to get to know them as they attempt to become this year’s Cinderella story.

Founded in 2002, PSA Elite is known as one of the premier amateur sides in Orange County, California. They are competing in their first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup this year as they travel to Portland to play the Portland Timbers U23’s. Despite this being their first trip to the national spotlight as a team, they are far from inexperienced.

Owner and executive director Alex Lujan is looking forward to the opportunity of competing in the US Open Cup this year. His club got their first taste of national competition last year, as PSA Elite competed in the 2011 USASA National Championships in Bowling Green, Kentucky. There, after defeating the Region III champion from Texas, they lost to a Chicago side from Region II by a score of 3-2 in the final.

Soon after the tournament, the option was presented to him to compete in the US Open Cup. It offered two things: being able to compete in the United States’ oldest national soccer tournament, and entering the amateur national championship. So he obliged and signed up to compete. He wanted to make sure that the team was prepared for the challenge, so out of the 17 players he is bringing to Portland, all but three of them were on the team last year. He wants to create continuity and a familiarity between the players.

The three players that were brought into the squad were midfielder Edwin Miranda, who came from the Los Angeles Blues of USL Pro, midfielder Miguel “Mikey” Lopez, who is entering his sophomore season at North Carolina this fall, and Miguel Ontiveros, who recently played with Premier Development League side Orange County Blue Star.

PSA Elite has no lack of talent, and plenty of players who have had professional experience. The aforementioned Miranda was drafted by the Dallas Burn in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, was signed by the Portland Timbers, and later moved on to Puerto Rico, Miami, and Hollywood. He has spent the last eight years in the USL professional ranks. PSA Elite’s captain, Cameron Dunn, has played for the Timbers, the California Victory, and the Los Angeles Blues. He is known for having a strong presence in the back, and having excellent leadership. Also, John “Tre” Lee, a defender for the club, has suited up with the Cleveland City Stars.

The club is run very professionally, with the only caveat being that it is an amateur side, and that no players are paid. There is an extremely high talent pool in Orange County the team is drawing from, and it shows in the competition. The players are treated like pros, from the moment they lace up their cleats to the minute they finish the match and walk off the pitch. Everything from scheduling to laundry is taken care of in house by staff, so that the players can focus solely on playing at their best. Also, in the offseason, professional players spend time training with the club. Players known to appear include Sporting Kansas City striker Kei Kamara, Blake Wagner of the San Antonio Scorpions, and Toronto FC’s Eric Avila (whose brother, Adrian, is a current member of PSA Elite).

Facing off against the Portland Timbers U23’s is a good test for the club, says Lujan. Due to the multitude of players that have suited up for the Timbers in the past, they know what to expect going into Jeld-Wen Field. “The facility is amazing. The crowd is going to be loud and exciting.” He exclaims that the veteran presence on the club should help the younger players adjust to the atmosphere. They have to “make sure some of the younger guys play within themselves, and handle the adrenaline rush effectively.”

Lujan feels that the US Open Cup experience is going to help his club and his players, regardless of the outcome. “This is an absolute win-win for us. If we win, we play an NASL team (Carolina Railhawks). It’s a great experience for the guys. If we lose, the experience will be extremely rewarding. … We’re trying to give these guys experiences and opportunities to be seen and play in front of crowds on an amazing football field.”

Lujan sums up the whole opportunity by exclaiming the following statement: “I want to go out and win, but if we don’t, hopefully will make everyone better players.”

2011 US Open Cup Quarterfinals: Chicago Fire turn out the lights on no-show Red Bulls (Video)

Severe storms in the Chicagoland area knocked out power to over 800,000 households, as well as Toyota Park, on Monday. Because of the lingering issues at the stadium, the Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls agreed to move up their Quarterfinal match to a 5 PM local start in order to get it in before dark. The Fire then proceeded to knock the daylights out of the Red Bulls, winning 4-0 to earn a spot in the Semifinals. It is their eighth all-time (tied for most), but the first since capturing the 2006 championship.

Dominic Oduro and Yamith Cuesta scored the first two and Orr Barouch added a pair to give the hosts the easy victory on the night against a defenseless Red Bulls squad.

In an action reminiscent of how most MLS coaches used to treat the US Open Cup, New York had purposely handicapped themselves before even leaving home. Only fourteen players made the trip to Illinois, and neither head coach Hans Backe nor assistant coach Jan Halvor Halvorsen followed them. Individual development coach (and recently retired Red Bull) Mike Petke became interim coach for the match, as he was the only coach on staff at the game. The players that were sent were a mere shell of the Red Bulls roster that many know. Not only did you not see stars like Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez, or Tim Ream; you didn’t even see less familiar role players like Joel Lindpere, Teemu Tainio, or Carlos Mendes. In fact, only one player, Mehdi Ballouchy,  at the match had seen the field more than 10 times this year. The other nine field players had only seen 11 previous starts all year – total (all belonging to Stephen Keel and Austin Da Luz).

On the other hand, the Fire were not out to play games. They had most of their starters play on short rest in Rochester in the last round, and meant business again in this contest. The only usual starter not on the field at kickoff was Diego Chaves. Turns out, they didn’t need him.

Chicago got started early, when in the 7th minute Dominic Oduro slotted home a goal past New York keeper Bouna Coundoul off a play from Cristian Nazarit to give the Fire a 1-0 lead. That goal would give Oduro a tally in his third straight US Open Cup.

The Fire would have many more chances in the first half, including a few shots just sailing over the crossbar. Despite the clear advantage, Chicago were unable to add to their lead and would enter the break holding a slim 1-0 edge.

The second half, however, was a different story as the Fire broke loose. It started in the 48th minute when a Daniel Paladini short corner kick led to a cross over to the far post. The cross was received by Yamith Cuesta, who headed it home past Coundoul to give Chicago a 2-0 lead.

Just a few minutes later, that lead would stretch to three. A pass from Gonzalo Segares into the box found the feet of Oduro, whose deflected shot ended up with Orr Barouch, who slotted it home to put the Fire up 3-0. Barouch would find one more goal for himself and his club in the 69th minute as he scored off a through ball from substitute Diego Chaves.

The Chicago Fire advance to the Semifinals of the 2011 US Open Cup, where they will take on the history-making Richmond Kickers of USL Pro. The Kickers have already defeated two MLS sides on the road (Columbus Crew, Sporting Kansas City), and will play this one away from home as well. The match will take place at Toyota Park on Tuesday, August 30 at 8:30 PM ET.

2011 US Open Cup Third Round: Red Bulls win Big Apple showdown 2-1 over FC New York

FC New York had been looking forward to this match since they proposed an annual exhibition with the New York Red Bulls during their expansion announcement back on April 1, 2009. The USL Pro side finally got their chance to take on Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls, but this game was much more than a proposed friendly. It was a Third Round match in the 2011 US Open Cup, and although they scored a stunning opening goal, they couldn’t hold on as the Red Bulls won 2-1 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

It was an important win for the Red Bulls who are aiming to put their recent Open Cup struggles behind them. This marked the first Open Cup game in their new stadium, and they had not won a game in the tournament since 2006. In fact, they had not tasted victory in front of their home fans in the competition since the 2003 Semifinals.

The Red Bulls controlled much of the first half, peppering FC New York goalkeeper Steve Diaz. However, Diaz held his composure and kept the USL side even. He had a couple good saves in the first half, one coming in the 28th minute as Corey Hertzog hit a shot from the top of the box. Diaz juggled the ball, but eventually held on to make the save.

Later, in the 40th minute, FC New York would get a great chance to take the lead as the team’s leading scorer in the tournament, Jhonny Arteaga, received a cross at the six yard box. He one-timed it toward goal, but Red Bulls keeper Greg Sutton made a point blank save to keep the game scoreless. That scoreline would hold through the remainder of the half.

The second half saw more action from both sides, particularly from the Red Bulls, as they continued to test Diaz in net. In the 53rd minute Austin Da Luz ripped a shot from the top corner of the 18-yard box only to see Diaz make a fantastic save once again to keep the MLS side off the board.

Just three minutes later though, FC New York would break through. Owen Morrison hit a screamer from 30 yards out to give his team a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. That lead, however, would be very brief.

Just two minutes after that stunner, the Red Bulls would tie it up, capitalizing on a defensive error. A failed clearance led to a header, which directed the ball to Hertzog. He took the ball near the touch line to the left of Diaz and placed it low and inside the near post at a very tough angle to equalize for the Red Bulls.

The MLS club would get its winner in the 65th minute as John Rooney (brother of English star Wayne Rooney) took a shot from 25 yards out, placing it low and inside the left post to give his team a 2-1 edge that they would not relinquish. Tim Ream, in his return from playing in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the United States, set up the goal.

The Red Bulls would get more chances to extend their lead later in the match. They might have had a claim to earning a kick from the penalty spot as Juan Agudelo, also back from the Gold Cup, was pulled down inside the penalty area in the 71st minute. They would receive one last great chance in the 85th as the US international received a cross from Marcos Paullo, who was stationed on the right sideline. Agudelo hit a shot mere feet from the goal, but Diaz once again came up with an outstanding save for FC New York, keeping a potential tying goal within reach. That goal would never come, though, as the match finished 2-1 in favor of the Red Bulls.

The New York Red Bulls now hit the road for their Quarterfinal match. They are slated to play the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on July 12 at 8:30 PM ET in a rematch of the 2003 US Open Cup Final. Chicago won that match 1-0 at Giants Stadium.
