Even though “officially” Seattle’s MLS and USL history are separate, the fact is, a team with the nickname of “Sounders” has reached the semifinals for the fourth year in a row. This year’s team will face Chivas USA on September 1, a team that a Sounders club has never lost to in US Open Cup play.

2008 Second Round: Battery escapes with late PK vs. Charlotte Eagles
On the cusp of extra time, the Charleston Battery escaped with a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Eagles, thanks to a 90th minute penalty kick by Osvaldo Alonso. In front of 1,411 at Blackbaud Stadium, Darren Spicer opened the scoring for the hosts in the 12th minute, who recovered a rebound from Charlotte goalkeeper Terry Boss after a shot by Aaron King.
2008 First Round: Charlotte Eagles soar past Galactics after delay
Two goals apiece from Robert Ssejjemba and Dustin Swinehart saw the Charlotte Eagles advance over the Clearwater Galactics 5-2 in the First Round of the US Open Cup. The amateur club from the USASA’s Region III put up a fight on the road, leading the Second Division Eagles at the halftime break, but in the end the hosts proved to be too much.
