A historic ride for San Fernando Valley FC in the U.S. Open Cup ended in the Second Round as California United Strikers dominated the field with its consistent offensive push over the defense which resulted in a 5-0 victory.

If you appreciate our coverage of the US Open Cup for the last (nearly) two decades, and want to see it grow in the future, consider joining our Patreon team by clicking above.

“It was a refreshing performance. We’ve been struggling, you hadn’t scored. So we’ve all been pressing a little bit to score early. And to score five, I think relieved and relaxed the whole team,” Cal United Strikers FC head coach Don Ebert.

There was no hesitation from Cal United Strikers FC and four minutes into the match, 15-year-old, Marcus Lee was able to finish a pass from Omar Nuno to create the 1-0 lead.

“I was really shocked, actually. But I believed in myself, and it was a great pass from my teammate, Omar . So I’m just really happy and All Glory to God,” Lee said.

It is very likely that Lee is the youngest player to score a goal in the US Open Cup’s Modern Era (1995-present), but TheCup.us is unable to confirm that. The youngest player in recent years to score a US Open Cup goal was 16-year-old San Antonio FC academy player Ethan Bryant who scored a goal against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the 2018 US Open Cup.

SFV FC being in a deficit early into the game left them in a position they were not accustomed to from any of the Open Cup matches. SFV FC kept more of a defensive shape as Cal United Strikers FC continued to push their offense higher on the pitch.

“We’re normally the aggressor, we’re normally the team that’s pushing higher up the field and pressing,” said SFV assistant coach Kyle Keenan. “So we’re not used to playing in a mid-to-low block like this. We’re not used to being the team from coming from behind. So it’s just something that we haven’t done much. And we don’t have a lot of experience solving those types of situations in a match.

Cal United Strikers FC created several opportunities to lengthen their lead but SFV FC goalie Steve Acosta Mercado held his backline and in the 12th minute saved a header attempt that was just a few feet away from the five-yard line.

However, his countless saves were short-lived in the 15th minute when Strikers player Gustavo Villalobos was able to find his teammate, Anthony Carillo Lopez’s foot and then complete the pass to raise the score 2-0.

Pressure from the growing lead, SFV FC tried to maintain their defensive formation but seemed to slowly break shape on various occasions. The team lacked control with their possession and left Cal United holding the ball most of the first half.

This proved to continue and in the 30th minute, Cal United’s Ayden Bowers added a third goal for his team as they took that 3-0 lead into the halftime break.

Entering the second half, SFV FC showed more aggression snd motivation to cut the deficit in any way they could. However, Cal United Strikers FC carried on with their strong offense and kept SFV FC in their backfield for the first 15 minutes of the half.

“We’re trying to be a very attacking offensive team. And tonight, we played a lot of the young guys and they came up big. So it was them who the energy to our team,” Ebert said.

Breaking away from the backfield, SFV FC finally saw the opportunity to move their offense up but a foul outside of the Strikers penalty area left SFV FC, and reigning TheCup.us Player of the Round Tomas Bosuel being awarded the only yellow card of the match.

The match went on with the same play from both teams but it would be in the 71st minute that Cal United’s Lee, would make a run from the deep in the backfield and end with an assist to Guilherme Farias to extend their lead to 4-0.

That momentum would carry on and what seemed to be a foul in the midst of a play halted members from both teams waiting for a call, but Cal United’s Lopez would continue with the play and claim his second goal of the match.

With a 5-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the match, SFV FC tried regaining its composure and focused on holding their defense strong,

However, the half would end before SFV FC could finish any chances they made for themselves resulting in Cal United coming out on top and advancing to the next round in their first-ever tournament game.

While Cal United Strikers FC waits to hear word for their next opponent (which will be announced Friday at Noon ET), they will look towards their future games and focus on their training.

“Just take care of us. You know that in a tournament like this, we’re gonna play somebody who’s a higher seed. We’re gonna be an underdog. I don’t know where we’ll play. Just it’s only the beginning for us,” Ebert said.

It was announced that Cal United has been put in a group with FC Tucson (USL-1), LA Galaxy (MLS), LAFC (MLS), Orange County SC (USL-C), San Diego Loyal (USL-C)

2022 US Open Cup Round 1: Tomas Bosuel of San Fernando Valley FC voted TheCup.us Player of the Round

Scoring a hat trick in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in a one-sided contest doesn’t always guarantee a player an award. In this case, Tomas Bosuel of San Fernando Valley FC did more than enough to earn TheCup.us Player of the Round.

If you appreciate our coverage of the US Open Cup for the last (nearly) two decades, and want to see it grow in the future, consider joining our Patreon team by clicking above.

Bosuel was involved in five of San Fernando Valley’s six goals in a 6-2 First Round win over fellow UPSL club Escondido FC. The Argentine was the only player in the opening round to score three goals and he added two assists to give his club a win in its US Open Cup debut. Bosuel also becomes the first player from Argentina in the Modern Era to score a hat trick in the tournament.

“To be honest, I’m happy to score three goals, but helping the team win is what really matters,” Bosuel told TheCup.us. “I just tried to be as focused as possible, and tried to have fun and do what I know how to do.”

The award is voted on by TheCup.us staff, a select panel from the North American Soccer Reporters and select backers (those that pledge $10 or more) of TheCup.us’ Patreon team.

In the 30th minute, SFV FC’s Bosuel beat a defender for a breakaway. Facing the goalie one on one, he ended with a straight floor shot to the back of the net. Putting SFV FC on the board first, 1-0.

It wasn’t long for SFV FC to raise the score again. In the 42nd minute, Bosuel delivered a ball to Irvin Lopez who made a long run cutting in front of the goal, where he slipped the ball past the goalie to make it 2-0.

After Escondido pulled one back just before halftime, Bosuel dished out another assist as he found Giancarlo Ponciano two minutes into the second half to restore the two-goal lead.

Bosuel completed his hat trick with two goals in less than five minutes. In the 62nd minute, a long ball came in from Rivas which was headed by an Escondido defender, and fell to Bosuel who put it into the back of the net.

About four minutes later, Cristo Deras served up Bosuel to complete the 63rd hat trick of the Modern Era.

It was an impressive performance considering it was just the third competitive game that he had played with the club.

Growing up in Argentina, Bosuel’s dream was to be a pro soccer player. By the time he was 14 years old, he found himself playing at River Plate, and later suited up for clubs like Tigre, Barracas and Sportivo Barracas. However, some personal issues forced him to walk away from the game at the age of 17. After a couple of years away from the game, he found it extremely difficult to resume his career.

“It’s a decision that I have regretted for many years,” said Bosuel about his decision to walk away from the game at a young age. “Supposedly in Argentina when you are 19 years old, you are already too old to enter a club.”

At the age of 20, he began a new journey, with a renewed motivation. He left his home country with the goal of seeing the world, and playing the game that he loves.

He moved to Mexico where he lived there for six months and then moved to the United States in the fall of 2021, settling in the Culver City area, which is about an hour’s drive to get to the club’s home field in Thousand Oaks, Calif. where the UPSL club trains five times a week.

“ I began to trust myself again and understood that it is never too late to go for your dreams,” said Bosuel. “And that was when life, God and the universe began to give me what I was asking for.”

Three months ago, he joined San Fernando Valley FC and says he has fit in well with the team’s culture and is very thankful to the club for embracing him.

Christine Lam, the President and CEO of San Fernando Valley FC believes Bosuel has fit in well in such a short time.

Aside from being a great athlete and team player, he has such a positive attitude and brings great energy to the club,” said Lam. “He initially was not a starter but was subbed in due to an injured player and he just took that opportunity to really give it his all and shined. He is very dedicated to his fitness and training and it shows. And most importantly, he is just a really nice and wonderful young man. You know he will give you his all.”

“I haven’t seen my family and friends for a year and a half and sometimes it’s hard,” said Bosuel. “But I feel like is like my family and it helps me continue on the path to my dreams.”

Those dreams he had as a teenager are still alive and have been reborn here in Southern California and he hopes that if he can continue to perform well for San Fernando Valley, and in the US Open Cup, he can continue on that journey.

“Of course, I want to be a pro soccer player and I know that I’m going to be,” said Bosuel, who credits SFV’s head coach and owner Carlos Cortez for helping him adapt to the team and regain his form during his short time with the club. “Everything in life comes when one is prepared for it to come, that’s why I’m living this dream and I will continue working 100 percent to continue improving and growing.”

With the win, San Fernando Valley FC advance to face a pro team in Round 2. They will travel to Irvine, Calif. to take on the California United Strikers FC (NISA) on April 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 10:30 p.m. ET.

In the First Round of the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, a hat trick from San Fernando Valley FC’s Tomas Bosuel and a handful of cards, helped lock in their spot in the next round with a 6- 2 win over fellow UPSL side Escondido FC.

If you appreciate our coverage of the US Open Cup for the last (nearly) two decades, and want to see it grow in the future, consider joining our Patreon team by clicking above.

“It’s very hot outside,” SFV captain Richard Minaian said. “We started a little slow but we always usually do and then we got in our groove after a while and the calls just kept flowing in and we just stuck together and then we won.”

Early into the match, the battle to maintain possession was evident between the teams. However, it would be SFVFC that would find themselves keeping it to a 60-40 possession. The intensity of the match would lead to a yellow card award to Omar Rodriguez from Escondido FC in the 15th minute.

In the 42nd minute, on a long run cutting in front of the goal, Irvin Lopez was able to get the ball past the goalie for his first goal of the match to make it 2-0.

“It’s really nice when they see work is paying off. The challenge is when sometimes it doesn’t happen, but we were lucky enough,” SFV FC head coach and owner Carlos Cortez said.

However, at that same moment, a foul was called on the play. Escondido FC’s Erik Papke would be awarded a yellow card, but Escondido FC would still be given a penalty kick for the foul made within the box.

Escondido’s Raymond Soro would complete the penalty kick and change the score to 2-1 in the 43rd minute.

The remaining minutes of the half continued with the fast pace play and battle for possession, but halftime arrived with the score 2-1 in favor of the home team.

Just two minutes into the second half, San Fernando Valley’s Giancarlo Ponciano lengthened the team’s lead to 3-1.

“When the wind is blowing, just used it to keep pushing, and try to go as far as you can, basically capitalized on it,” Cortez said.

With the lead getting father ahead, Escondido FC seemed to be slowly losing its formation as frustration between players was rising. This intensified the match which SFV FC responded back but led to the team’s first and only yellow card awarded in the 49th minute to Fabricio Alvareng.

“Frustration happens of course, but we always stick together no matter what,” Minaian said. “We’re together literally every single day. So things like that always happens, like with brothers, of course family, and we just always stick together no matter what. We may bicker, but we just let it go and just move forward.”

However, that did not stop SFV FC from adding to the scoreboard in the 62nd and 66th minutes. The first goal came on a long ball from Rivas which was headed by en Escondido defender, fell to Bosuel and he made no mistake. Four minutes later, Cristo Deras served up Bosuel to complete his hat trick. Bosuel was the only player in the First Round to score three goals in a game and the 63rd player in the Modern Era (1995-present) to complete a hat trick in the US Open Cup. He is also the first Argentine to score a hat trick in the Modern Era.

With a 5-1 lead, the momentum and urgency to tie the match were the prime focus on Escondido FC, but that led to two more yellow cards awarded during the match  (71st minute, Robson Rolim De Moura, and 81st minute, Josue Hernandez).

In the 79th minute, Escondido FC, David Achaerandio, finished the opportunity his teammate Christan Bahera created to alleviate the score to 5-2.

However, with all their efforts, at the 90th-minute SFV FV Ramiro Hermida, in a moment of pure luck, his shot which seemed to be heading past the outside post of the goal ended up skimming on the inside. Leaving SFV FC on top with a 6-2 win.

SFV FC will now travel to face the California United Strikes FC (NISA) in the next round on April 7 in Irvine, Calif., but the team see this as another opportunity to showcase their skills.

“Obviously its a huge opportunity for all the players, you know, for us as a staff to, for me such a young team,” said Cortez. “As I mentioned before, nothing to lose, a lot to gain.”

2022 Meet the Underdogs: San Fernando Valley FC bridging opportunity gap for young players

Owners of San Fernando Valley FC, Carlos Cortez (head coach) and Christine Cortez (president), built an organization that fulfilled their and their athletes dream of being able to bridge the gap between young athletes’ who wanted to continue competitive play beyond their youth years.

If you appreciate our coverage of the US Open Cup for the last (nearly) two decades, and want to see it grow in the future, consider joining our Patreon team by clicking above.

In 2015 and 2016, the Cortezes saw the struggle between their Under-19 athletes who wanted to continue playing at a high-level of competition which could not be provided by an average Sunday league.

The decision to move to the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) soon followed in the Fall of 2017.

However, the Cortezes also wanted to construct an organization that focused on keeping cost as minimum as possible to keep these young athletes playing. They took into consideration the various backgrounds and demographics of each athlete that led to its strong foundation within the club.

Their goal would to eventually be able to provide the athletes the opportunity to play with no financial cost at all.

“We only required their time and commitment to training and playing,” said Christine Cortez. “We had a lot of immigrant players from underprivileged or single parent backgrounds so in addition we wanted to give them a healthy outlet.”

Joining the UPSL allowed their players to develop on a personal level but also expand their professional growth. San Fernando Valley FC was considered the youngest team at the time as the average player age was around 19 years old.

However, in its first club match that Fall, they were victorious in a 4-3 win which proved the level of talent the organization carried and would continue to carry as the year progress.

In its 2021 Fall season, San Fernando Valley FC held a 9-2-0 overall record in the SoCal North division and were named the SoCal North Division I Champions. In addition, the club was able to edge out both the SoCal East and South divisions for the SoCal Division I Western Championship title.

Adding to the whirlwind of the club’s success, San Fernando Valley FC earned its promotion to Premier Division for the 2022 Spring season.

“We are so proud of all our players and their achievements and so much time and effort went into this happening,” Christine Cortez said.

San Fernando Valley FC will be hosting the first round of the U.S. Open Cup on its home field at the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex. The club secured its position in the tournament following a 2-1 victory over Capistrano FC in the final qualifying round.

While the club has gained a new following, the organization is grateful for everyone who has helped along the way to bring the Cortez’s dream to life.

“They also believed in us and our mission, which is to help and showcase local homegrown players,” Christine Cortez said.

The organization missions continue to be at focal point that drives the club and its decisions. They hope to continue to promote their athlete’s development with hopes of them reaching a professional level.

The club’s future goal is to be able to showcase their athletes’ skills and worth ethic on a larger scale but will continue to leap over obstacles until they have reached that point.

“There are so many young players who would benefit from our professional training and coaching program, and we’d love to have the ability to offer this on a greater level,” Christine Cortez added.

The San Fernando Valley FC’s foundation is centered around a positive and developmental focus atmosphere that athletes in the area are flocking too. The community has also become involved with the club and supports its mission to help improve the athletes in both a personal and professional growth.

The club has just seen the beginning of its success in the last five-year and continues with their momentum to be the best team in the Valley and in its SoCal North division.

“I don’t think it’s even hit us yet, that we achieved something that hasn’t been done by another team in the valley for so many years,” Christine Cortez said. “It’s an honor to represent Los Angeles and specifically, the San Fernando Valley.”

2022 US Open Cup Qualifying: San Fernando Valley FC edge Capistrano to qualify

December 22, 2021 by Kathryne Padilla

In the “Win & You’re In” round of the Open Division Local Qualifying tournament for the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, San Fernando Valley FC maintained possession throughout the match to secure a 2-1 victory over Capistrano FC.

With the win, San Fernando Valley qualifies for the US Open Cup for the first time in club history, and becomes the first club from San Fernando Valley to enter the tournament since 1995. That year, the San Fernando Valley Golden Eagles qualified from the USISL Pro League (Div. 3 pro). SFV is the fourth UPSL club to qualify for the 107th edition of the tournament, which begins March 22-23.

(Editor’s Note: If any of our readers know anyone associated with the 1995 San Fernando Valley Golden Eagles, please contact us HERE)

At the start of the match, it was a battle between both teams in a battle for possession. However, Capistrano FC couldn’t hold its shape through the midfield which SFV saw opportunities to take control.

The offensive pressure that SFV had been putting on Capistrano FC finally led to a goal in the 17th minute. Charlie Cazares was first on the board after completing a pass from Miguel Ortiz that was outside of the 8-yard line.

With the score 1-0 so early into the match, Capistrano FC began to increase their intensity to even the game. However, this resulted in several minor fouls being called for both teams. The referee named most of these fouls as a fair play which frustrated both teams and resulted in an increase in the aggression of play.

Though Capo FC played with more intensity, the duration of the first half continued with a 60-40 possession, with SFV holding most of the control.

While more attempts on goals occurred for SFV and a few for Capistrano, the half ended at 1-0.

With the second half underway, it was evident that Capistrano reviewed its tactics in the first half and made adjustments. The team was no longer leaving its midfield open and moving together offensively which left SFV to fight harder for possession.

The possession between both teams leveled to 50-50 as Capistrano FC created more attempts on goal.

As the match continued, the number of injured players on the pitch for SFV increased but where all fouls were called fair play. The frustration and hostility between both teams finally led to yellow cards.

In the 50th minute, a collision between SFV goalie Bilal Danduli and a Capistrano player ended with Danduli being judged to be at fault and given the first yellow of the match. Just a few minutes later, Capistrano’s Sergio Montes was also given a yellow card.

However, by the 65th minute, a deflection from the Capistrano goalie ended with SFV’s Hadmid Babaali putting a foot on the ball to give his team a 2-0 lead.

The goal didn’t discourage Capistrano FC, instead, they used the score as more motivation to get on the board. Its offensive push was starting to push SFV out of shape and looking for a way to bounce back.

In the 82nd minute, that offensive push would pay off for Capo FC. A deflection off Danduli left a pile of players from both teams in front of the goal to retrieve possession but ended with a header from Capistrano’s Marcos Cervantes.

With less than 10 minutes left of the match, Capistrano FC continued to make attempts to even the score. A final yellow card was given before the end of the match to SFV’s Jeffrey Xochipiltecatl.

A few plays were made after the yellow but ultimately the game ended with SFV coming out victorious, 2-1.
