2027 US Open Cup Format: All MLS teams return to the competition

US Soccer has announced the format for the 2027 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament proper and it will feature all 27 US-based MLS teams for the first time since 2023, with a total of 64 pro teams and 32 Open Division teams. There have also been numerous changes to operations of the cup, with the hosting priority rules expanding from the last two years to include both the Round of 64 and the Round of 32. The dates have also drastically changed for 2027, with most of the rounds happening after Labor Day and the Final happening on December 15.

TOURNAMENT COMPOSITION

Entering with the 32 Open Division teams in Round 1 will be 32 lower division (Division II and Division III) professional teams between the three total leagues in those divisions (USL Championship, USL League One, and MLS NEXT Pro.) Those 32 match winners in Round 1 will advance to the Round of 64 which will feature the entry of the 27 US based MLS teams and five high performing USL Championship teams. Only teams that have played in their league’s season that started prior to Jan. 1, 2027 will be eligible. This effectively means that no professional “expansion teams” will be eligible for the Open Cup. Along with the “one club, one entry” rule, which makes most teams in MLS NEXT Pro ineligible, this leaves 72 eligible professional teams for the 2027 edition of the tournament.

For the First Round, to determine the 32 lower division pro teams that will enter the competition, it will be

All eligible MLS NEXT Pro teams will enter, currently three: Carolina Core FC, Chattanooga FC, and Connecticut United FC
The remaining spots will be split amongst USL Championship and USL League One, using the 2026 season standings to determine who will enter if there are more teams than slots available. As of publication, a total of eight teams from this pool will not participate in the 2027 US Open Cup

The five USL Championship Teams that will enter the Second Round/Round of 64 with all MLS teams are:

The 2026 Players Shield winner (best regular season record)
The 2026 USL Championship league champion
The 2026 Prinx Tires USL Cup champion (only USL Championship teams remain)
The highest seeded Eastern Conference team that is not a trophy holder.
The highest seeded Western Conference team that is not a trophy holder.

As of publication, it is unclear who will fill a spot if a USL Championship team wins multiple trophies this year.

HOSTING PRIORITY

For the past two editions of the tournament, the Round of 32 has featured half of the 16 MLS teams that are in the Open Cup to be given priority to hosting the Round of 32 match only, with no priority given for any other round. The remaining matches in that round gave the lower division team priority to host the match.

For 2027, this has expanded to all 32 teams entering in the Round of 64 (27 MLS and 5 USL-C). Each will be given priority to host that Round of 64 match. To give Round 1 teams another chance to host, any team that enters Round 1 and makes it into the Round of 32 will have hosting priority for the Round of 32 match. The First Round and then from the Round of 16 to the Final hosts will all be done in a random fashion, should both teams desire to host the match with a suitable venue.

NEW DATES FOR 2027

Major League Soccer and MLS NEXT Pro are undergoing a transition in 2027 to a season that starts in July/August and ends in May/June, when for the entire existence of their leagues, the season would normally run from February/March and end in December. This new season schedule for MLS and MLSNP will also feature a winter break starting in late December and ending in late January.

Because of this major change to the only Division I league in the country, the US Open Cup schedule has been adapted to fit. It will still run on a calendar year basis, but will not have rounds for most of the summer, and the final five rounds of the tournament, from the Round of 32 to the Final will all happen after Labor Day in 2027.

First Round: April 13-14 and 20-21, 2027
Round of 64: July 8-11, 2027
Round of 32: Sept. 14-15, 2027
Round of 16: TBC
Quarterfinals: Nov. 23-24, 2027
Semifinals: Dec. 1, 2027
Final: Dec. 15, 2027

With the Round of 64 during what is presumably the MLS preseason, the match dates revolve around a weekend for, as far as our records say, the first ever time in the Modern Era. This also has the Quarterfinals on the two days prior to Thanksgiving. The Final will likely be one the last games on the MLS schedule prior to their winter break, making it possibly even more of a marquee match with little to no games on or around it.

Generally, this schedule still fits around USL Championship and USL League One schedules too, with their seasons beginning in March and ending in November. Only the final 3 rounds of the tournament may extend seasons for teams from those two leagues, typically 1-2 teams a season.

MLS ROSTER CHANGES FOR US OPEN CUP PLAY

In Major League Soccer’s press release, it states that gameday roster sizes will expand from 18 to 20 for 2027. This would apply to all teams in the tournament proper. They also state that “MLS clubs may select from any contracted first team, MLS NEXT Pro, and academy players.”

As of the last publication and update on their website, US Soccer policy requires teams to use their official league roster for the basis of all matches in the US Open Cup. This has been the policy for the existence of the US Open Cup. There are no provisions to combine official league rosters for another team they own in a different league, nor any youth league rosters. It has to go through official league processes to be on a league roster for any league, and verified by the league’s registrar to US Soccer.

There has also never been a numerical limit to professional team roster sizes for the US Open Cup, and a long time policy of limiting professional team match day rosters to 5 players on foreign visas was removed in late 2019.

What MLS is likely talking about is more towards their internal league rules surrounding rostering players for US Open Cup matches. This is governed and guided by the CBA with the MLS Players Association. Currently there are provisions in the CBA regarding how often a player from MLS NEXT Pro or an academy may be put on the first team roster, for how long, and how many players can be on a first team roster at one time. Therefore, this is most likely a rule that was agreed upon with the MLSPA, which may be announced by MLS in the future.

2027 US Open Cup Qualifying: Record-setting 155 teams enter qualifying tournament

The US Soccer Federation has announced the 155 teams that will enter qualifying for the 2027 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. 16 teams will emerge from qualifying for spots in the First Round proper next March, joining 16 other amateur teams directly entered in the First Round for a total of 32 Open Division teams.

Teams will be paired against one another based on distance, unless a geographical match-up is impossible. Teams playing anywhere from 2-4 knockout matches to advance to the First Round, with announcements of teams receiving byes already distributed to qualifiers. Teams will play on the following weekends:

September 12-13, 2026
October 3-4, 2026
October 31-November 1, 2026
November 21-22, 2026

Last year, US Open Cup qualifying set a record with 146 teams being announced for the tournament. This year, its another new record with 155 teams across 29 leagues. For the second year this also includes USL League Two (USL-2) and National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) teams, for those that did not receive direct qualification into the First Round based on league performance.

UPSL once again leads the way with a staggering 63 teams entered from their league, three less than their all-time high of 66 that was set last year. In total, 29 states, plus the District of Colombia (D.C.), will be represented in qualifying, tying the record set last year.

The most clubs from any one state is California with 22, with Florida just behind with 19.

There will be 16 Open Division teams directly entered into the First Round proper next March. USSF has expanded what leagues and competitions get direct entries into the Open Cup based on performance.

2026 National Amateur Cup: El Farolito run gauntlet to win Region IV title

The last regional champion has qualified for the 2026 National Amateur Cup. El Farolito SC of California, the team known for US Open Cup upsets of professional sides, won the USASA Region IV (West) Amateur Cup on Sunday afternoon after playing five games in three days. The final challenge saw El Faro beat defending regional champion Sin City FC, 3-0.

The Burrito Boys will head to Milwaukee, Wisconsin next month, July 24-25. Should they win that, they would qualify for a fifth straight US Open Cup tournament. The team would have also qualified in three different manners; using the National League path through the National Premier Soccer League, as John P. Motto Trophy winners, and then as National Amateur Cup champions.

The team has previously reached the national portion of the Amateur Cup, playing in the 1991 final under the name CD Mexico in a losing effort to St. Louis Scott Gallagher. Two years later in 1993, CD Mexico would win the US Open Cup, meaning a national title later this month could put El Farolito in rare company of teams that have won both national tournaments.

The Region IV men’s regional amateur cup tournament at the Western Sports Park in Farmington, Utah saw twelve, yes twelve, teams compete. These teams were broken up into groups of three and were as follows;

Sin City FC – Nevada, Southwest Premier League
Temecula FC – California South, Southwest Premier League
Rebels United FC – Nevada, Southwest Premier League

A few things to note here. Firstly, tournament officials claimed Bowaze, which competes in the non-USASA affiliated UPSL, also competes in the Southern Idaho Soccer League. However, no publicly available information supports that. Next, despite being from the state of Texas, which is part of USASA Region III (South), Sun City competes in Region IV (West) due to their home city of El Paso, Texas being closer to the western states versus the rest of Texas. Finally, Cal South Saturdays was a team created by various players from Cal South, meaning they might not have an official league. Their legal status was up for debate to be honest.

The group stage would take place over Friday and Saturday, with the teams from Groups A and B facing each other, and the teams from Group C and D doing the same. The top teams at the conclusion of the group stage would advance to Sunday morning’s semifinals, with a final between the eventual winners taking place later in the morning with only a few hours of rest. The points system in the group stage was also unique, with the following parameters.

WIN = 6 points
TIE = 3 points
LOSS = 0 points
GOALS SCORED (Up to 3) = 1 point each
CLEAN SHEET = 1 point

Meaning a team could end a game with a maximum of 10 points if it ended 3-0, along with other combinations of points for both teams in a game.

El Farolito came into the final match undefeated after beginning the weekend with a scoreless draw. After the slow start, they worked their way into the semifinals, narrowly escaping the group by two points. There they faced Cal South Saturdays and had to scrape back from a 2-1 halftime deficit to win 3-2, despite being down to 10-men. This earned them a date with the defending champions.

Sin City FC had a slightly easier route to the finals. Their second match was abandoned after 25 minutes and they lost their third, but they still made it out of the group. Their semifinals opponent only had eight players to begin the match — despite being a local team — and Sin City took advantage, going up 3-1 early and cruising to a 7-1 victory.

El Farolito dominated almost every aspect of the final match. They were physical and controlled the meaningful possession, not allowing Sin City to play their game the way they are used to. Neither team was able to score a goal, nor were they able to get too close, until the 29th minute when Erik Arias opened the scoring. El Farolito held the shutout through the rest of the half and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. The second half started about the same as most of the first half. Sin City had a few chances spread out in the second half, but all of their best attempts went over the crossbar. El Farolito put the match away within 15 minutes of the second half. Edgard Kreye doubled the lead in the 54th minute and Dembor Benson put it out of reach in the 59th minute.

El Farolito held onto the lead and won the Region IV title, booking their spot in the National Amateur Cup.

After the match, El Farolito SC’s head coach, Santiago Perez, spoke on how much the US Open Cup means to the club.

“Yeah, the US Open Cup is a huge thing for us — and then finding there’s another way of qualifying. It’s the first time that we’ve done this, I believe, it is actually in my generation, or at least it’s the first time, I think in the 90s, the club was runner-up in the US amateur cup. So hopefully, we could advance in the semifinal, and then try to win the cup. That’ll be the first time we ever win this national amateur. So to me, it’s a huge opportunity.”

On his team’s performance, Perez said, “I’m very proud of the boys, they came out in very, very tough conditions with very large pitches, very, very difficult to play, very slow play. And we were very fortunate to get out of the semifinal, with 10 men, down one, losing 2-1 and were able to turn it around, went 3-2 with 10 men. It was an unbelievable effort, and yeah, just closing off right now was an excellent performance — more of a tactical strategy.”

The month of April saw (most) of Round 2 of the USASA Region II (Midwest) Amateur Cup take place. Three of the four games were played, including two blowout wins and one game decided by a single goal. The fourth game was embroiled in so much controversy that the game will instead be played in early May.

The 102nd edition of the National Amateur Cup will continue on in the Midwest with a few changes. Two new teams will enter the competition next round; defending regional champion RWB Adria and defending regional finalist FC Milwaukee Torrent. To make the format work, that means two winning teams from this round have been granted byes into the regional semifinals which are meant to be played before Sunday, May 17.

The 2026 edition of the United States Adult Soccer Association’s top tournament will once again grant an automatic bid into the following year’s Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Meaning this is already 2027 US Open Cup qualifying.

Region II, which is made up of teams from the Midwest, is just starting, but the eventual champion will be the representative at the National Finals, alongside the other three USASA Regions.

Home side Drita Soccer Club advanced passed Livonia City FC earlier this month, 9-0, in a game where then referee became the star of the show. Three first half red cards saw Drita up two men in the first half hour before seeing a red card of their own.

Livonia saw Dylan Turner and Reece Still both shown straight red cards within the first 25 minutes of the match. Despite this, Drita only scored one goal in the first half. DSC’s Calvin Kalemaj was also shown a red around the 40th minute, though it is unknown if this was a second yellow offense, to make it 10v9 for the last 45 minutes plus.

Tired legs got the best of Livonia and Drita scored eight more goals unanswered in the second half to move on. Drita will not compete in the Quarterfinals and instead will recieve a bye into the semifinals.

An early goal gave Goshen City FC a huge win over 1917 SC, 1-0, in the all Indiana battle.

Both teams described the match as hard fought. Goshen took the early lead when Iker Andes found Roberto Sanchez early the first half, signaling this might be an all-offense affair. However, neither team could capitalize on chances and the score remained for the remainder of the match. Home side 1927 SC hit the crossbar twice during the match and forced a handful of great saves by Goshen keeper Rafael Sabas.

Goshen made their Amateur Cup debut last year, falling in penalty kicks to eventual regional finalist Michigan Rangers FC. They’ll now face the defending regional champion, 2-time national champion, and defending national finalist RWB Adria of Chicago in the Quarterfinals.

Green Bay Glory knocked off United Serbian Soccer Club, 8-1, with four goals in each half. The shocking result seems to be related to a few factors. The Serbs were missing players, struggled to stop set-piece goals, and suffered a red card early in the second half. All of these combined have Green Bay essentially a walk-over win.

The visitors came out flying and Josh Johansen scored about 10 minutes in to give Green Bay the early lead. A few minutes later, USSC’s Aleksandar Prpa scored off a deflection for an equalizer but it was down hill from there for the home team.

Right after, Cooper Re scored for GBG to make it 2-1. Griffin Pecore and Seth Schroeder also found the back of the net to enter the break up 4-1. Tommy Geocaris scored a fifth goal less than a minute into the second half. It’s hard to call this the nail in the coffin, but around the 55th minute, a breakaway chance with the Serbs’ goalkeeper ended in a foul and a DOGSO red card for USSC. Keven Sosa-Lassila stepped up and buried the PK. Abraham Navarro and Javoni Mendoza capped it off to close out an 8-1 statement win.

In total, eight different players found the back of the net for Green Bay.

After beating RKC Third Coast last round, Chicago House AC was originally disqualified from the tournament for allegedly using an ineligible player in their lineup. After a successful appeal, House is back in the tournament but their originally scheduled match vs Minnesota Blizzard FC had to be moved to a new date. Blizzard advanced after beating Vlora FC in Round 1.

The winner of this game will bypass the quarterfinal stage of the Region II tournament and qualify directly for the semifinals. This is because of two reasons, chief among them USASA Region II said RWB Adria and FC Milwaukee Torrent would have byes to the Quarterfinals but didn’t actually account for math and realize that you can’t have a quarterfinal round with six teams. So two teams are getting byes. The second reason is that this game has been delayed so long that it is taking place the day the USASA Region II Quarterfinal match window closes.

Honestly you can count this as a Quarterfinal match and pretend House and Blizzard had byes past Round 2. It’s overly complicated. It’s insane. It’s the Amateur Cup, baby.

UPDATE (May 1, 2026)

Chicago House AC has advanced into the regional semifinals after Minnesota Blizzard FC forfeit the match scheduled for Sunday, May 3. According to reporting by Northland Soccer Journal, the NPSL side was unable to have a team ready to travel and play in Illinois for the make-up date.

“Very disappointing as we did have a strong team ready to play on April 19” (the original scheduled date) they told NSJ in a statement.

The U.S. Adult Soccer Association and House have both confirmed the news to TheCup as well. A semifinal draw is expected to take place net week.
