2024 US Open Cup Round 2: Louis ‘Chapa’ Herrera’s OT winner lifts Greenville Triumph past One Knoxville

Louis “Chapa” Herrera had not scored a goal since 2021.

He was playing for El Paso Locomotive and scored in a loss. Over the next three seasons, he failed to record a goal.

On Wednesday in Knoxville, that changed. Herrera scored the extra-time winner in Greenville Triumph SC’s 3-2 win over fellow USL League One rival One Knoxville SC.

“He’s not a goal scorer, but he was in the right place at the right time and stuck it away,” Greenville head coach Rick Wright said. “He had a chance a little bit later. So, we were very excited for him.”

Greenville Triumph started the scoring early on, as Lyam MacKinnon took a chance in the 15th minute. One Knoxville goalkeeper Johan Garibay made the initial save, but the rebound fell to MacKinnon, which he put away.

One Knoxville was given an opportunity just three minutes later, as the club was awarded a penalty off a handball. Kempes Tekiela put it past the goalkeeper to level the score.

MacKinnon earned his brace in the 33rd minute. He took advantage of a deflection to find himself close to the goal with just Garibay to beat. He used his left foot to put the ball across his body for his second goal of the evening.

Tekiela leveled the score once again, this time from open play. Thanks to a crafty assist by Innocent Nshuti, Tekiela found himself with some space in the box. He took advantage, leveling the game after the 62nd minute.

Greenville Triumph was awarded a penalty with just five minutes remaining, giving Brandon Fricke a great opportunity to send his side through. He tried to beat Garibay to his right but couldn’t do so as Garibay saved his team’s chances.

He couldn’t do so in added time, as Herrera dispatched the game-winning goal in the second half of extra time. Leonardo Castro made a run down the left wing, cut inside to draw the defenders near the penalty box and played the ball left to a wide open Herrera making an overlapping run. Herrera took a couple of touches, moved it to his right foot and curled a shot to the far post to beat the goalkeeper in the 107th minute.

One Knoxville had several chances to find the equalizer, but Greenville Triumph was able to see out the game through their defending and their perseverance of draining time holding the ball in the corners.

With 16 USL Championship teams entering in the Third Round, Wright wants to take the opportunity and play a new opponent. The draw for the Third Round will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.

“I’d like to play a Championship team because we’re going to play all these other guys in the league,” Wright said. “So a little different team that we’ll have to play against. Hopefully, we’ll host because we’ve been on the road for the last little bit.”

2024 US Open Cup Round 2: Miami United make USSSA history with upset of Club de Lyon

On a breezy evening in Pembroke Pines, Fla., Miami United triumphed over Club de Lyon (NISA) with a dominant 2-0 win in the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Although a bit shaky than the home team would have liked, United pulled off the upset in a drama-filled game at UPSL Stadium at Broward College South campus.

With the win, Miami United makes history. United, a member of the United States Soccer League, becomes the first team from the United States Specialty Soccer Association (USSSA) to reach the Third Round of the US Open Cup.

After a nervy back and forth from both teams in the opening 20 minutes star ex Atletico Nacional John Pajoy from Colombia found the back of the net after a good pressure from Alejo Fernandez against defender Andrew Anyafo who could not parry the ball correctly allowed Fernandez to whip in a cross for a 1-0 lead. It was Pajoy’s second goal in as many Open Cup games this year. He scored the lone goal in Miami’s 1-0 upset win over Chattanooga FC (MLS NEXT Pro) in Round 1. By then, Club de Lyon lost momentum and could not break under Miami’s attacking spell after the goal.

United had many chances to extend the lead as fullback Serrano even tried a few shots on goal and Pajoy hit the woodwork just before halftime. Martinez could barely get a whiff of the ball from then as Club de Lyon sat further and further back and could not get past their own half.

During halftime, Miami head coach Claudio Frean pleaded with his team to not become complacent and close the game out in the second half.

“We’re alright guys. Relax, relax,” Frean shouted. “We cannot get crazy here.”

These words of encouragement were enough for Miami to attack the same way they did after they scored the first goal. Finally, after a string of chances, Serrano, after some passing exchanges with Insua the number 10 set him up down the flank to make a run that allowed him to make another low cross where Fernandez had an easy tap-in with no defender seemingly marking him.

From then on, it was smooth sailing until minute 71 where the match began to get heated.

Club de Lyon’s Malik Thom received a long pass in behind the defense and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper. United defender Frank Fraggetti attempted to track him down and mis-timed a tackle and knocked Thom down in the box and the referee called for a penalty kick. Fraggetti received a second yellow card for thet foul and was sent off.

The bench was infuriated with the call and many were protesting from the staff with the referee threatening to expel multiple staff members from Miami United’s side.

Club de Lyon had a chance to cut the lead in half from the penalty spot, and spending the remaining 20 minutes with a man advantage. Juan Martinez stepped up to take the penalty, but he not only had his attempt saved, but when the rebound came back to him, Miami goalkeeper Cristian Blanco saved that one too as the crowd and the team cheered as if they had won a final.

“Vamos Carajo!” was heard shouted from the bench.

After that missed opportunity, despite being a man up, Club de Lyon’s players seemed deflated and had no way to break Miami’s concentrated defense. Even with fresh legs and substitutions, it proved to be too late after Blanco’s heroics shut them down from a comeback.

Once full time was called, Miami United players cheered Ole Ole Ole as fans jumped into the stadium to join in on the fun. The home advantage was respected and it was full of emotions from start to finish but not without its complications that will definitely have Claudio Frean looking for improvements going into the Third Round.

“It was a tough match, they are a great rival,” admitted Pajoy after the match. “I think the team was able to handle that stress and thank God the goals came and we were able to get the win, step by step.”

About 200 spectators attended to watch as Miami’s new project of building a competitive team for the US Open Cup continues to make waves. United, who is competing in its sixth tournament, will try to match it’s best run in 2018 where the reached the Fourth Round.

Miami United needed to keep the momentum after their win over Chattanooga and tonight over Club De Lyon, as an early elimination would raise questions surrounding Claudio Frean and his team. And this has proven to be a good start on all accounts.

Club De Lyon by contrast had more experience on their roster in this tournament so many felt the pros from NISA were the favorites. Juan Martinez the team’s 38-year-old captain, caused problems for Miami’s defenders through various parts in the game, but the Argentinian international just could not get going during the game and will be exiting the tournament early.

2024 US Open Cup Round 2: Dembor Benson’s brace propels El Farolito to historic upset of Central Valley Fuego

El Farolito isn’t through with scoring upset victories in the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and has obtained yet another historic result on the road, this time in the heart of California’s San Joaquin Valley.

The National Premier Soccer League side came from behind to knock off USL League One’s Central Valley Fuego FC 2-1 in Merced, CA thanks to two goals from striker Dembor Benson.

El Farolito, an amateur club named after a local Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, became the first NPSL side to upset consecutive professional team opponents in regulation, previously stunning MLS NEXT Pro side Timbers2, 2-1 at Providence Park in Round 1.

Orange County FC was the last amateur side to beat two professional teams in the same tournament, defeating FC Golden State Force (USL-2), 2-0, before advancing against Orange County SC (USL-C), 2-2 (5-3 PK), but their second round match went to penalties.

Lopez called for intensity from his players and went on the offensive from the beginning. Fuego FC had trouble advancing from its own half as El Farolito put high pressure on its back line in an attempt to recover the ball closer to goal.

In the 12th minute the NPSL side almost opened the score early on as Benson connected a header that bounced off the post and ended up in the hands of Fuego FC keeper Andre Zuluaga.

Fuego FC was awarded a penalty just a few minutes later following a slide tackle inside the box, which Jose Carrera-Garcia converted into a goal to make it 1-0 for the hosts.

However, El Farolito kept pressing as Benson found the late first-half equalizer, capitalizing on a rebound from a long ball inside the box, and placed it in the bottom right corner of the net.

Lopez’s team remained persistent in pushing forward during the second half and came close. Just as they did in Round 1, El Farolito came from behind to win it thanks to a late goal from Benson, who netted the ball in the 88th minute at the far post following a pass from Sebastian Yabur inside the box.

This was Benson’s third goal of the cup and his second match-winner after scoring the decisive goal in the previous round against TImbers2.

Benson celebrated the win with his teammates, all of whom called him over for the team photo in front of the scoreboard as he carried his son in his hands with him.

“To me this is more than just a team, it’s a big family,” Benson said. “I’m so happy and proud to be a part of this. It’s not easy to get on a bus and travel five hours to beat such a tough team. It’s been nothing but joy for me since this team opened its doors to me.”

Regardless of picking up a win over Fuego FC head coach and former USMNT standout Jermaine Jones, El Farolito head coach Santiago Lopez expressed how grateful he is to lead his team to victory in the tournament.

“I’m very honored to be a part of the US Open Cup and be involved with this group,” Lopez said. “Jermaine Jones is a great coach. Regardless if it was him or someone else we still have to compete, and I wish him all the luck in the world.” 

It’s the club’s first time in the Third Round in the Modern Era of the US Open Cup.

2024 US Open Cup Round 2: Charlotte Independence survive PK shootout with upset-minded SCU Heat

There was little to separate the two teams on the field Tuesday night in Charlotte in the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The visiting South Carolina United Heat (UPSL) and the host Charlotte Independence (USL League One) played to a dramatic scoreless draw through 120 minutes that could only be broken by the strong right hand of Independence keeper Austin Pack in the fifth round of penalty kicks.

The South Carolina amateur side was looking for another road Cupset in North Carolina after they had knocked out Crown Legacy FC in the first round just two weeks ago.  The North Carolina pros were dealing with several injuries in their team selection and these changes disrupted the rhythm and circulation of the team.

“It was a hard night and they (SCU Heat) gave us a very good game,” said Independence head coach Mike Jefferies. “They were super organized. We were prepared in terms of what we expected from them, but I don’t think we were strong enough mentally going into the game. I thought we were casual with the first half, not sharp, let the game drift, and played at their tempo too much.”

The first half of the match saw both teams unable to find the final, quality ball in the attacking third resulting in mis-timed connections and errant shots from distance.  The Independence enjoyed a 2-to-1 edge in possession on the evening but this ball control wasn’t in the attacking half and never translated into dangerous chances inside the Heat penalty box.  The Heat were very organized defensively with large numbers behind the ball and the visitors were content to absorb the pressure and then break out on a quick counter when the moment arrived.

The second half saw the best chances in the run of play from both teams as the Heat in the 55th minute produced a wild scramble in a crowded Independence box that had Pack charging off his line blocking two Heat shots around the penalty spot.  The Independence in the 73rd minute after some quick combination play had a shot from the top of the box rattle off the bar to keep the score at 0-0.

During extra time both teams were searching for a long-range winner but none of these hopeful shots could find a way through the concentrated defensive blocks guarding their goals.  Both teams had emptied the tank over the 120 minutes played and two exhausted teams went to the spot to decide who advances into the third round.

SCU Heat kicked first and converted their penalty despite Austin Pack getting a touch to the ball in the Charlotte net. 

Zach Rowell then made a diving save for the Heat punching away the stutter-step Independence effort to give them the advantage.

Both players made the second penalty to make the score 2-1 Heat after two rounds.

The third Heat kicker slipped at the time of his penalty and Pack dove to the left and turned the stray ball away. Charlotte converted their third kick and it was knotted 2-2 after three kicks.

Both teams netted the fourth penalty to set up the final deciding moment of the match. 

Austin Pack waited for the left-footed Heat kicker to open his hips and then Pack dove confidently to his right to flip the advantage to Charlotte.  The final, penalty-winning kick was hammered high into the net by Charlotte defender Fabrice Ngah to send them through to the third round.

It was a very muted celebration as Ngah embraced Pack and his teammates after this exhausting match.  The Charlotte Independence now await Thursday’s Third Round draw to see which USL Championship side they face in couple of weeks.

In their Lamar Hunt US Open Cup debut the UPSL amateur side SCU Heat posted a 1-0-1 record recording two shutouts against professional opponents. The victory over MLS NEXT Pro Crown Legacy 1-0 and the draw versus USL One Charlotte Independence 0-0 are exactly the type results Heat head coach Asher Quave-Robinson prepares his side to deliver.  The Heat were on a mission to be “more than just a UPSL team” when they take the field. A solid debut and clever warmup shirt from the “drywall installers and substitute teachers” in the 2024 US Open Cup.

2024 US Open Cup Round 2: JJ Jimenez hat trick helps NYCFC II win reserve version of Hudson River Derby over Red Bulls II

On a rainy night in Queens, New York City FC II did something its parent team has never done – beat a professional soccer team from New York City. NYCFC II knocked off rival and fellow MLS NEXT Pro side New York Red Bulls II, 4-2, mostly thanks to a hat-trick from Jonathan “JJ” Jiménez.

NYCFC II head coach Matt Pilkington said after the match that making team history, being the first NYCFC professional outfit to beat an Red Bulls unit in a knockout competition (Open Cup, Leagues Cup) means something.

“Not only is it a derby, it’s a cup game, it’s a home game. There’s a lot at steak tonight. It makes it a little bit sweeter,” said Pilkington. “I thought we had a really good test tonight. (Red Bulls II are) a really good team. They’re really well coached … I thought it was a good derby match and entertaining lots of goals and good for the fans.”

Jiménez echoed that point as he spoke to the media after his performance, emphasizing how the team had been preparing since its last league match last week.

“We have been preparing all week,” he said. “We know it’s a derby, and we know it’s win or go home. So, we prepared (mentally) more than preparing our bodies and we got ready for a fight.”

New York City II entered the match missing a handful of players due to them playing in 

2024 Generation Adidas Cup. While Red Bulls II looked to be the stronger side, head coach Ibrahim Sekagya’s lineup had some glaring omissions. These included keeper A.J. Marcucci and defender Omar Valencia, who started the game on the bench.

The Red Bulls got on the board early thanks to a run up the left side by Serge Ngoma. His low cross into the box hit off players from both teams, but Mohammed Sofo pivoted to get a left footed strike off on the loose ball. The shot went right towards Tomás Romero, but slipped through his legs to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 6th minute.

It was the third time the Baby Blues conceded a goal within the first ten minutes of a match this season. However, the home side was able to counter in the 22nd minute. A NYRB II goal kick and series of headed passes ended with Christian McFarlane feeding Jiménez. The forward was on side and between defenders as New York pressed high. With a defender on him, Red Bulls keeper Dallas Odle came off the line to challenge. However, Jiménez sidestepped the keeper to his right and punched in the tying goal.

Momentum fully swung towards the home side, who cut through the Baby Bulls defense. Bulls II head coach Ibrahim Sekagya played three center backs to start the game, telling the media afterwards that usual starting left back Omar Valencia was dealing with an injury late in the week. City II was able to capitalize this and continued to find holes in the first 45.

Jiménez struck again in the 38th minute, as a long kick from City’s end found him in the middle of the field. A slick move past the covering defender set up another 1-v-1 with Odle, who the forward once again rounded to make it 2-1.

According to Jiménez he and his team knew exactly how to play against their Hudson River Derby rivals. 

“We basically planned for it, we knew that they were going to press us building out,” said Jiménez. “We wanted to play out the back and break their press because we knew once we broke that press, we were in behind – Me, Malachi , Agustín , and myself just running behind. We all have pace, any ball in behind, we’re going to get.”

Roald Mitchell had a chance to tie the game in the 41st minute with a shot that rang off the left post. New York countered with a chance to extend the lead at the other end and kept the ball there.

Malachi Jones, the 8th overall pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, had a stellar night as well. He got on the scoresheet in the 45th minute when a series between Piero Elias and Taylor Calheira set him up at the left post. He chipped Odle and a last ditch NYRB II defender to make it 3-1.

In the second half, coach Sekagya’s group came out hot. Mitchell continued his late half momentum with an easily saved shot in the 47th minute.

But forty seconds later, a long pass to Mohammed Sofo allowed him to through pass to Ngoma in the box. Running toward the left side, Ngoma shot low and towards the right to cut into the deficit.

The visitors continued to have momentum in the second half, controlling possession and keeping NYCFC out of their end. In the 62nd, substitute Omar Valencia crossed a pass into the box from the left side, a part of the field NYRB frequented throughout the night. While the pass was intercepted, Ngoma charged for the loose ball in the box and was tripped by NYC’s Christopher Tiao. The Red Bulls’ Julian Hall stepped up for the potential tying penalty kick, the 16 year old’s shot was saved by Tomás Romero to keep it 3-2.

After the match, Romero, who joined the NYCFC first team earlier this year and is officially a “loan” to the reserve team, said he had a feeling what Hall was going to do to try and throw him off during the penalty run up.

“Nowadays, a lot of guys are doing that pause thing where they run up and pause . So, I kind of expected it,” said Romero. “Something was telling me he was going to do it and I think he stopped right before. So on those, you really have to just stay in your position as long as possible and wait for him to make the decision. I kind of tell by his body shape where he was going, and I just waited until the last second and went for it. It was a big moment in the game and I’m happy about that. I’m proud that I was able to save it.”

Asked about his player’s miss, coach Sekagya said Julian Hall will have plenty of time to grow and move on from it. Especially since his team will be back at Belson Stadium on April 10 to face NYCFC II in the regular season.

“(It’s) unlucky for him, but he’s a player which we know that he’s a strong young boy. He can come away from that. We talked about it,” said Sekagya. “We just encourage him to think about it and he will take more.”

New York (the red one from New Jersey) continued to look for an equalizer against New York (the blue one from New York) for the rest of the half. A 72nd minute shot by Steven Sserwadda curved over a defender’s leg and looked to be heading for just under the crossbar but hit off the hand of an outstretched Romero to force a corner. That chance pales in comparison to the one five minutes later, when Sofo sent a long pass to Hall on the left side. The young Bull sent a high cross into the box, where Mitchell flew into frame to attempt a shot. NYCFC II’s Alexander Hauschild blocked the ball off the line, where it hit off the right post and then off the hand of Mitchell to end the play.

The home side got the final say in the 85th minute when in the 85th minute when Taylor Calheira’s shot from the top of the box struck the hand of Red Bull defender Juan Gutierrez, earning him the night’s first and only yellow card. It was also NYCFC II’s first shot on target of the half. Jiménez calmly sent the keeper to the right post while sliding the ball towards the left one. The goal sealed the result, notched Jiménez his first hat-trick as a professional, and eventually saw NYCFC II become the first MLSNP side to qualify for the Third Round.

Jiménez noted afterwards though that it wasn’t actually his first-ever hat-trick as a player.

“On the hat trick, it’s actually a cool story. My first ever hat trick was against Red Bulls when I was in the academy,” the forward said. “When I was in high school, I think I scored four, and now I did it here (in the pros), so it is just amazing.”

2024 US Open Cup Round 2 Highlights: The Magic of the Cup Continues

The first of two nights of the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup kicked off on Tuesday night with four of the six games seeing professional sides advancing to the Third Round. The two amateur sides to survive were in the round’s only amateur vs. amateur matchup as Lubbock Matadors blanked FORO SC 2-0 and El Farolito pulling off the upset on the road, 2-1 at Central Valley Fuego (USL-1). 

Wednesday night will feature 10 games and all of them will be streamed online. There are just three amateur teams left to play (Apotheos FC, Miami United and Vermont Green FC) and all three will host professional teams. You can find a preview of all 10 Wednesday night games with video links HERE. 

The draw for the Third Round will take place on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m. ET. It will be streamed live online via US Soccer’s YouTube channel.

2024 US Open Cup Round 2: Lubbock Matadors blank FORO SC in all-amateur matchup

In the lone all-amateur battle of the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the Lubbock Matadors defeated FORO SC, 2-0 at home.

An announced crowd of more than 2,000 fans showed up on a Tuesday night to cheer on the Matadors, at Lubbock Christian University.

The match appeared to be headed to the halftime break scoreless, but the home team was awarded a penalty kick after Luke Jones was taken down in the box. Jones stepped up to take the PK, but he missed it high over the bar and the half did, in fact, end up tied after 45 minutes.

The Matadors struck first with a right-footed tap-in goal from midfielder Salvador Martinez in the 71st minute. A free kick from the left wing was driven low into the box and it took a deflection and found its way to Martinez at the back post who put it in from close range. It was his second goal of the competition after scoring the 83rd minute equalizer in the Matadors’ upset win over the Arizona Monsoon (NISA).

Five minutes after the opening goal, Nigel Katawa of FORO SC was shown a second yellow card to put the Dallas-area club down to 10 men. It was the second game in a row that FORO had a player get sent off late in the second half. In Round 1, FORO saw a red card in the 81st minute, but managed to force extra time and upset Austin FC II in penalty kicks.

Moments after Tristan Singh of the Matadors was shown a yellow card, Lubbock put the game away in second half stoppage time. Douglas Appiah-Kubi made a physical run down the left wing into the edge of the box, created space and found Shuma Sasaki toward in the top of the box. Sasaki cut to his left to allow him to get off a shot to beat the onrushing goalkeeper. Sasaki assisted on Martinez’s game-tying goal in Round 1, and now had a goal of his own.

Despite only possessing the ball 42% of the time, the Matadors became more aggressive, taking 12 total shots to FORO’s nine.

Matador head coach Paul Gilbert said he was very proud of his guys.

“They sacrificed and made history,” Gilbert said. “Now we get to go to round 3.”

With the win, the Matadors advance to the Third Round of the US Open Cup. They will find out their next opponent when the US Soccer Federation conducts the live draw on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m. ET. The draw will be streamed online.

Michigan Stars head coach Enis Dokovic said that he predicted his team’s win over Minnesota United 2.

“You can ask my players,” he said, beaming.

Seer though he may be, he likely didn’t forecast the manner of his side’s win. It took extra time at Allianz Field, and a Stars goal in each half of the extra 30 minutes, to push the NISA heavyweights past the home MLS NEXT Pro side in a 2-0 Round 2 victory in the 2024 US Open Cup Tuesday in St. Paul.

Sacko Konate headed home a corner in the 99th minute, and Hunter Olson contributed a solo goal in the 106th minute, to lift the visitors into the third round for the first time in club history. The Stars put just three shots on target for the game, and none in regulation after the ninth minute, but were able to beat MLS veteran keeper Clint Irwin twice in extra time.

Michigan also benefited from the surprise inclusion of their own MLS veteran, the recently retired Justin Meram, who’d just finished a 13-year MLS career. Meram entered the game with a lot of US Open Cup experience with the Columbus Crew, Orlando City SC and assisting on the game-winning goal in the 2019 Final for Atlanta United FC.

Dokovic said that it all came down to a bit of back-fence convincing.  

“Justin is my neighbor,” he said. “When he retired, we as a club were trying to bring him in for months. Having his calm on the ball for the first 60 minutes, that was huge for us.”

Minnesota had the better of the chances during regulation, and dominated possession, eventually attempting 23 shots. None was a better chance than one that came from a Michigan defensive error, in the 58th minute.

Stars goalkeeper Talenda Mkuruva, out of his goal and attempting to play the ball more than 20 yards to the right of his net, saw his pass go wayward into the middle of the field. MNUFC2 midfielder Moses Nyeman played it to a wide-open Molik Jesse Khan, standing on the penalty spot, but Mkuruva — at a dead sprint — managed to get back into position just in time to stifle the shot.

Despite the possession and chances, though, Minnesota never found a breakthrough, and when regulation was up, it was Michigan that was the stronger team — even though the Stars had played just one game so far this season.

“The field was amazing, and the environment – for us coming from the Third Division it was something amazing,” Dokovic said of playing at the MLS Loons’ home. “I told my players , we’ve had an amazing 90 minutes in this environment — it’s up to you if you want to go for another 90 minutes.”

The Richmond Kickers notched its second competitive win of the season with a 5-2 win over the Maryland Bobcats, moving into Round Three of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the fifth straight year. The result also saw the Kickers earn its 36th all-time Open Cup win, tying for fifth in the Modern Era (1995-present) with FC Dallas and the Charleston Battery.

The Kickers got off the mark early, earning a penalty in the 5th minute after the official seemed to spot a handball from Luis Almeida off a Chandler O’Dwyer shot. Nil Vinyals’ shot sent keeper Trevor Jackson the wrong way with a low shot to the left for his first goal of the 2024 season.

From then on, the match took a chippy tone, with yellow cards issued to both teams before the 15th minute. Richmond dominated possession but the Bobcats played a physical game and took several opportunities to make forays forward.

Richmond’s out-of-possession pressing paid off in the 20th minute, when an errant pass at the back led to Jackson taking a heavy touch in the six-yard box. O’Dwyer was there to tap the ball in from close range and score his first goal of the season.

Maryland responded quickly, earning a corner a few minutes later. A scramble in the box saw the ball drop to Abdul Kooistra’s feet and the centerback made no mistake in finishing past Richmond keeper Pablo Jara. 

Richmond rallied to finish the first half strong. A free kick on the left wing saw Vinyals play an arcing ball into the box that centerback Dakota Barnathan finished with a powerful header. Halftime saw the Kickers ahead 3-1 on goals and the teams even 2-2 on cards.

Undeterred by the scoreline, the Bobcats came out bright in the second half. Putting the Kickers backline under pressure as they tried to clear the ball, Darwin Espinal earned a penalty after drawing a foul from Justin Sukow. His shot agonizingly hit the crossbar on a Panenka attempt. Maryland’s difficulties were compounded just two minutes later when Josselin Possian earned his second yellow of the night in the 61st minute and was sent off.

Yet the Bobcats weren’t finished quite yet. Despite his penalty miss, Espinal brought his side back within a goal with a thunderous strike in the 71st minute from outside the box.

Despite being an early contender for goal of the tournament, his efforts weren’t enough to rally the Bobcats and the Kickers added two more goals late. Nil Vinyals played Adrian Billhardt in off a gorgeous one-touch through ball and the winger squared it to Ryan Sierakowski to tap in in the 83rd minute while Barnathan added a second goal to his tally and player of the match performance, finishing at the right post off a corner in the 88th.

Richmond Kickers head coach Darren Sawatzky spoke approvingly of his team’s performance after the game.

“We worked on some things and they showed up,” said Sawatzky. “Chandler and the timing of his counterpress was perfect. He scored a great goal. We’ve been waiting for some guys to take some opportunities and they took them. I’m really happy with it.”

Richmond is now 9-0-1 (1-0 PK) all-time vs. Division 3 teams and the result saw them score their most goals in a game since they beat Virginia United FC 6-2 in the 2019 Second Round. It was a night to forget for the Bobcats, while Richmond will aim to build off their momentum as they seek their first league win since July 3, 2023 this weekend against Central Valley Fuego in USL League One play.

The Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup wrapped up on Wednesday night. Three amateur teams advanced to the Third Round. On Tuesday, two amateur sides from the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) survived as Lubbock Matadors blanked FORO SC 2-0 and El Farolito pulling off the upset on the road, 2-1 at Central Valley Fuego (USL-1). On Wednesday, the lone amateur team to move on made some history as Miami United upset Club de Lyon (NISA) 2-0. United, who competes in the United States Soccer League, became the first team from a United States Specialty Sports Association league to reach the Third Round. 

USL League One were the big winners of the Second Round as eight teams advanced to Round 3. MLS NEXT Pro had just three teams survive and the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) had just two punch their ticket to the next round. 

The draw for the Third Round will take place on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m. ET. It will be streamed live online via US Soccer’s YouTube channel.

The Richmond Kickers booked their place in the Third Round of the 2024 US Open Cup after beating the Maryland Bobcats (NISA) 5-2. Richmond jumped out to an early lead in the 6th minute when Nil Vinyals converted a penalty for a dubious handball. Chandler O’Dwyer added the second goal for the Kickers in the 20th minute, but Maryland would respond quickly. Abdul Kooistra bundled the ball over the line just minutes later to make it 2-1. Dakota Barnathan would add a third for Richmond in stoppage time.

Maryland was immediately on the attack in the second half. They were awarded a penalty in the 59th minute, but Darwin Espinal, a goalscorer in Round 1, put his chip too high as he hit the crossbar. Maryland’s task went from difficult to impossible in the 61st minute as midfielder Julian Possian received his second yellow card for lashing out at a Kickers player after a foul was called. Despite being a man down, Espinal would make up for his error and gave Maryland a lifeline in the 71st minute. An outrageous strike from long-range was just what his team needed to feel like they were still in the match. It was too little too late, as tired legs conceded goals four and five to Richmond’s Ryan Sierakowski and Dakota Barnathan respectively as Richmond advanced to Round 3 for the fifth year in a row. It was the Kickers’ 36th all-time Open Cup win, which is tied for fifth-most in the Modern Era (1995-present) {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Charlotte Independence and South Carolina United Heat played with intensity and desire in their contest to determine who moves onto the Third Round of the 2024 US Open Cup. There were plenty of chances for both sides, but last-ditch saves, off-target shots, or miss-placed passes deterred either team from scoring. Even after 90 minutes, in extra time, both teams were unable to find a winner. It took penalty kicks to decide a victory. South Carolina United Heat jumped out to an early lead, but Charlotte was able to claw their way back and seal their place in Round 3 for the second year in a row. The shootout’s final score ending with Charlotte prevailing, 4-3. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

In a match dubbed the “Hudson River Derby Jr.,” both NYCFC II and New York Red Bulls II traded goals as they sought to progress to the Third Round of the 109th US Open Cup. Red Bulls II jumped out to an early lead after NYCFC II goalkeeper Tomas Romero failed to stop Mohammed Sofo’s shot in the 6th minute. NYCFC would equalize through Jonathan Jimenez in the 22nd minute. He would add another goal in the 38th minute to make the score 2-1. Malachi Jones scored in stoppage time to ensure that NYCFC had a strong 3-1 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, the Red Bulls came out in their signature press. They immediately scored a goal from Serge Ngoma to put the pressure back on their cross-town rivals. They were later awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute, but Romero made up for his early error and denied the Red Bulls starlet Julian Hall. Jonathan Jimenez completed his hat trick in the 88th minute to seal the victory. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

The Lubbock Matadors of the NPSL were the sole amateur team to punch their ticket to the Third Round on Wednesday night after besting FORO SC, 2-0, at home in the Lone Star State. The match was the only match of the Second Round to pit two amateur teams against each other.

After a scoreless second half, Salvador Martinez scored the opening salvo in the 71st minute following a free kick. The ball fell to Martinez’ feet inside the box and he coolly slotted it home for the hosts. Lubbock then took advantage of a 76th-minute red card to FORO to salt away the match with a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time through Shuma Sasaki who connected on a corner from Douglas Appiah-Kubi. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

It took extra time, but Michigan Stars FC edged Minnesota United FC 2, 2-0, to reach the Third Round. The Stars were the lone NISA club to secure advancement on Tuesday night.

After a scoreless regulation, it took another nine minutes for the opening goal to be scored. Sacko Konate did the honors, heading home a cross from Steven Juncaj in the 99th minute of play. Hunter Olson supplied the finishing blow in the 106th minute, capping off a fast break from Elias McCloud’s assist.

The win marks the first time the Michigan Stars won advancement to the Third Round of the US Open Cup and the club’s first win over a professional team. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

El Farolito delivered a late stunner to Central Valley Fuego FC, triumphing, 2-1, over the professional outfit in Second Round action on Tuesday night. El Farolito is now the only NPSL team in history to beat two professional teams in regulation in one tournament.

Despite a bright start from El Farolito, it was Central Valley who found themselves with a 1-0 lead after a 19th-minute penalty scored by Jose Carrera-Garcia. El Farolito wouldn’t be deterred, however, leveling the match just before halftime through Dembor Benson.

With extra time beckoning, Benson delivered the late heroics just like he did in his club’s First Round match, one-timing a looping cross from Jhohann Yabur into the bottom right corner in the 88th minute. Though Central Valley had an opportunity to level it, the El Farolito defense stood tall to secure the victory.

The win moves El Farolito to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in road matches in Open Cup play. It’s the 1993 US Open Cup champs’ first time in the Third Round in the Modern Era of the competition. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Miami United FC won comfortably 2-0 over fellow Floridians Club de Lyon (NISA). Windy conditions played a big part in the match as both teams struggled in the elements. Miami opened the scoring in the first half when pressure from Alejo Melo Fernandez led to miscommunication in Club de Lyon’s backline. This gave a golden opportunity to Jhon Pajoy, who only had to beat the goalkeeper to score. Miami would double their lead in the second half, with Pajoy setting up Fernandez at the back post. The goal capped an excellent passage of play from Miami, featuring some great passing in the tough weather. Club de Lyon would have a lifeline in the 71st minute as Miami defender Frank Fraggetti would be sent off for a second yellow card offense, and conceding a penalty. It wasn’t to be for Club de Lyon as Juan Manuel Martinez put the penalty at hip height and goalkeeper Cristian Emanuel Blanco made the save. Martinez tried to follow up on the rebound, but Blanco made another save, tipping the ball out of touch over the crossbar.

Even with their extra man advantage, Club de Lyon was unable to create many meaningful chances. Miami United FC made a few substitutions and let their experience in the US Open Cup guide them to victory. With the win, United become the first USSSA club to advance to the Third Round. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

South Georgia Tormenta FC (USL-1)

South Georgia Tormenta FC stormed past Savannah Clovers FC in a Peach State showdown, 4-0, to advance to the Third Round for the second year in a row. Four different players scored for the USL League One outfit on the night.

Fans of the home side didn’t have to wait long for the opening salvo, with Niall Watson scoring in just the second minute off Pedro Fonseca’s assist. Joshua Ramos doubled South Georgia’s advantage in the 35th minute thanks to help from Jackson Khoury. At the 57-minute mark, Pedro Fonesca recorded his second assist of the evening, helping Sebastian Vivas make it 3-0. Austin Wehner then put the finishing touches on the scoreline in the 90th minute.

The win was South Georgia’s first against a Third Division opponent in Open Cup play. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Greenville Triumph SC (USL-1)
After Extra Time

A cagey affair between USL League One foes saw Greenville Triumph SC edge past One Knoxville SC, 3-2, after extra time. Chapa Herrera scored the matchwinner after the contest ended 2-2 in regulation.

Greenville struck first through Lyam MacKinnon in the 15th minute, but the match saw itself knotted up quickly at 1-1 through Kempes Tekiela’s penalty conversion just three minutes later. MacKinnon bagged his brace in the 33rd minute to send Greenville into halftime nursing a 2-1 advantage. Not to be outdone, Tekiela scored the second half’s lone goal in the 62nd minute for a brace of his own off an assist from Innocent Nshuti.

With the match tied 2-2 after 90 minutes of play, extra time heroics were needed to determine a winner. Herrera stepped into that spotlight in the 107th minute, thanks in part to Leonardo Castro’s assist.

As a result of the win, Greenville has secured passage to the Third Round for the second straight season. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Carolina Core FC (MLSNP)

Vermont Green looked to build on their Round 1 success as they played host to Carolina Core on Wednesday night. The amateur side from USL League Two had another stellar crowd, featuring United States Women’s National Team player Samantha Mewes, even with rain and snow in the forecast. The home fans went crazy in the 28th minute as Carolina Core conceded a penalty, which was converted by Yaniv Bazini. Vermont would take their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Several great attacking opportunities and saves for both teams led to a thrilling second half. Carolina made up for their first-half mistake when Papa Ndoye converted a penalty to equalize in the 60th minute. Substitutions would also play a big role for Carolina Core. Striker Joshua Rodriguez came into the match at halftime and made a huge impact in the 70th minute, rebounding the ball into the back of the net for a 2-1 Carolina lead. Vermont made a valiant effort to equalize, but they were reduced to 10 men in the 89th minute. Jacob Lebovitz was shown red for retaliating and headbutting a Carolina Core player. Vermont would throw everything they had left into the mix, but Carolina was resolute. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Chattanooga Red Wolves SC (USL-1)

A 52nd-minute strike by Stefan Lukic was all that separated Chattanooga Red Wolves SC from their amateur counterparts, Apotheos FC in Second Round action.

Knotted up at 0-0 after the break, Lukic finally found the breakthrough the USL League One outfit from Chattanooga was searching for in the 52nd minute. The winger fired home with his left foot into the bottom left corner to provide the match’s lone goal in favor of the visitors.

The win marks the Red Wolves’ first on the road in their third attempt. The club will be advancing to the Third Round for the first time in club history after bowing out in the Second Round the last two years. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Chicago Fire FC II (MLSNP)

Forward Madison FC (USL-1)

Goals on either side of halftime pushed Chicago FIre FC II into the Third Round over Forward Madison FC on Wednesday night. 

David Poreba got the scoring going just 11 minutes into the match, tapping in from close range to put the MLS NEXT Pro side up 1-0 over their visitors from Madison. Jason Shokalook then put away a second for the hosts in the 90th minute, with Lamonth Rochester assisting on the effort.

Chicago Fire FC II remains unblemished in their Open Cup debut, defending their home field twice so far. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Union Omaha (USL-1)

Union Omaha fended off Cup darling Des Moines Menace, 3-1, on Wednesday evening in Open Cup action. In doing so, Omaha moved to a sterling 4-0-0 in home contests in tournament play.

With halftime beckoning, Pedro Dolabella got on the end of Josue Gomez’s corner to put the host side up 1-0 in the 44th minute. Shortly after the restart, in the 48th minute, Union Omaha secured an insurance goal thanks to Marco Milanese. Lagos Kunga put the final touches on the scoreline with a goal in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

Not to be denied a goal on the evening, Leroy Enzugusi cleaned up Rashid Nuhu’s save on former US Men’s National Team player Sacha Kljestan’s initial effort to pull one back in the 87th minute.

As a result of Wednesday night’s triumph, Union Omaha has now reached the Third Round in every Open Cup the club has participated in. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

After a scoreless first half, both teams found an offensive spark in the second. Opening up the scoring just two minutes into the second half, Wayne Frederick II got on the end of a Marlon Vargas cross to put the Colorado Rapids 2 up 1-0. Northern Colorado answered in the 59th minute through Marky Hernandez.

An 80th-minute goal by Ethan Hoard meant that the Hailstorm had surely won it, but it was all for not. Kimani Stewart took advantage of Northern Colorado’s failure to clear a cross to level the match in the third minute of stoppage time and send it to extra time.

With the match appearing to be headed to penalties, it was Northern Colorado who found the late-match heroics necessary to see out the win. Taking advantage of a harried Rapids 2 transition, the Hailstorm sprung a fast break that saw David Garcia tap in a low cross from Lucky Opara to clinch victory in the 121st minute.

The consummate road warriors, this marks Northern Colorado’s fifth road win in three tournament appearances. Every Cup win for the Hailstorm has been on the road. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Irvine Zeta FC (NISA)

A rush of blood to the head saw Irvine Zeta FC enjoy a man advantage for 74 minutes to see out a 3-0 victory over Ventura County FC.

Nicola Barros Schelotto earned a straight red in just the 16th minute of action, putting Ventura County at a disadvantage that Irvine Zeta would capitalize on before the end of the opening stanza. Linking up with Oscar Cervantes, Rafael Espinoza fired his shot into the upper right corner to take a 1-0 lead into halftime for the visitors from Irvine. George Almeida and Marcel Salceda scored insurance goals in the second half as Irvine cruised into the Third Round.

The win marks Irvine’s first road win and first win over a Third Division side in their debut tournament appearance. Irvine was the only NISA representative to advance to the Third Round on Wednesday, and just one of two NISA teams to win in the Second Round overall. {FULL MATCH REPORT}

Luis Gil’s late goal proved the distance as Spokane Velocity FC edged out LA Force, 1-0, to earn advancement to the Third Round of the US Open Cup. Spokane is the sixth USL League One side to punch their ticket on Wednesday night.

After being frustrated by the LA Force defense for 84 minutes, Spokane finally claimed a deserved lead in the 85th minute of action through Gil. After Andre Lewis’ attempt was saved, Gil was there to clean up the rebound and put the hosts through to the Third Round. {FULL MATCH REPORT}
