New Mexico United faced off against the Lubbock Matadors in the Third Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Thursday, and took home a victory in front of a home crowd. The teams faced off at the Ram’s Soccer Field at Rio Rancho High School, under the glow of the New Mexico sun. United had a action packed four minutes where three different players scored three goals, and the Matadors made one goal off a penalty shot in the last minute of the game, to give New Mexico a 3-1 win.

With this win, United advance in their opening round game for the fourth year in a row and will move on to the Fourth Round (Round of 32). They will find out their next opponent after the Third Round is complete.

For New Mexico United head coach Eric Quill, it was his first Open Cup win in charge of the club and he hopes the win will build some momentum as the team returns to league play.

“We want to be a player in this tournament,” said Quill, who played in 11 US Open Cup games during his playing days. “And obviously we’ve got a game coming on the weekend, so it’s always nice to get a win before you go on the road so hopefully this gives us some confidence going into North Carolina and we want to keep it rolling. We want to be a consistent winner.”

The game started off fast from the New Mexico United with Jacobo Reyes and Daniel Bruce both had their own shots on goal in the first and third minute of the half. Bruce in the 11th minute would have another shot on goal that would be wide. Matteo Conci in the 15th minute was able to secure two more blocks by United, but United continued to put the pressure on the Matadors. Matadors’ forward Luke Jones tried to take back the momentum, but his miss on the right side goal post couldn’t find it.

Going into the 16th minute, United’s Daniel Bruce was caught offside on his goal attempt that otherwise would have scored. The turquoise wearing United continually kept up the pressure, but failed to successfully secure any goals within the first half. This continued all the way to the 34th minute, where goalie Matteo Conci was able to block back to back shots from United’s Jacobo Reyes and Harry Swartz.

Both teams continued to find anything in the first half, but it didn’t happen. Both left the pitch for halftime with a 0-0 score.

Going into the second half, the United had regrouped and came out strong. Forwards and midfielders were making fast and concise passes up and around the box, and that led to a streak of three consecutive goals.

Starting in the 58th minute, United’s Harry Swartz was able to sink the ball in the back left corner with an assist from Daniel Bruce. Less than a minute later, Daniel Bruce found his own goal as he sent the ball from the right side of the box into the back left corner of the goal.

Finally in the 62nd minute, Mukewelle Akale was able to take a free kick and sank the ball into the center back of the net. Within four minutes, the United had turned a scoreless game into a 3-0 scoreline.

From that point on, the United were filled with electricity and kept running up the pace, not letting the Matadors come back at all. The United held a dominant 65.1% possession throughout the game, and through the rest of the second half it showed. It wasn’t until the 90th minute that the Matadors saw some success off of a penalty kick scored by Shuma Sasaki. The game would go on for an extra six minutes, but there was not enough time for the Matadors to come back and even tie up the game.

“All in all, first half, we had quality chances, we just couldn’t put those two or three away that we had so we let hang around,” said Quill. “It’s a good amateur team right there who has a lot of college players that have a lot of talent. So, credit to them for making it this far but now it’s on to the next round and we’ve gotta be better and we’ll work on those things that will make us better.”

In the lone all-amateur battle of the Second Round of the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the Lubbock Matadors defeated FORO SC, 2-0 at home.

An announced crowd of more than 2,000 fans showed up on a Tuesday night to cheer on the Matadors, at Lubbock Christian University.

The match appeared to be headed to the halftime break scoreless, but the home team was awarded a penalty kick after Luke Jones was taken down in the box. Jones stepped up to take the PK, but he missed it high over the bar and the half did, in fact, end up tied after 45 minutes.

The Matadors struck first with a right-footed tap-in goal from midfielder Salvador Martinez in the 71st minute. A free kick from the left wing was driven low into the box and it took a deflection and found its way to Martinez at the back post who put it in from close range. It was his second goal of the competition after scoring the 83rd minute equalizer in the Matadors’ upset win over the Arizona Monsoon (NISA).

Five minutes after the opening goal, Nigel Katawa of FORO SC was shown a second yellow card to put the Dallas-area club down to 10 men. It was the second game in a row that FORO had a player get sent off late in the second half. In Round 1, FORO saw a red card in the 81st minute, but managed to force extra time and upset Austin FC II in penalty kicks.

Moments after Tristan Singh of the Matadors was shown a yellow card, Lubbock put the game away in second half stoppage time. Douglas Appiah-Kubi made a physical run down the left wing into the edge of the box, created space and found Shuma Sasaki toward in the top of the box. Sasaki cut to his left to allow him to get off a shot to beat the onrushing goalkeeper. Sasaki assisted on Martinez’s game-tying goal in Round 1, and now had a goal of his own.

Despite only possessing the ball 42% of the time, the Matadors became more aggressive, taking 12 total shots to FORO’s nine.

Matador head coach Paul Gilbert said he was very proud of his guys.

“They sacrificed and made history,” Gilbert said. “Now we get to go to round 3.”

With the win, the Matadors advance to the Third Round of the US Open Cup. They will find out their next opponent when the US Soccer Federation conducts the live draw on Thursday, April 4 at 1 p.m. ET. The draw will be streamed online.

It was a thrilling first ever Lamar Hunt US Open Cup game for the Lubbock Matadors as they hosted professional side Arizona Monsoon of NISA, who were also making their tournament debut. The Matadors fought hard, battling adversity, including giving up an early goal, but ultimately came back to beat Arizona in extra time, 2-1.

An announced sellout crowd of 2,258 packed LCU Field at Lubbock Christian University on a picture perfect afternoon in West Texas. According to TheCup.us records, it was the first time that the oldest tournament in American soccer took place in Lubbock.

The match was dominated early on by the Matadors. It was reported before the match that Arizona had only traveled with 13 players, and it showed in the way they approached the game. As the first half developed, you could see Arizona growing into the game inch by inch.

This culminated in an amazing curling effort by Izsak Fierro in the 37th minute that landed perfectly in the top right corner, completely against the run of play. The Matadors had some smaller chances, but going into the half, they had a 1-0 deficit to come back from.

Talking about second half adjustments, Lubbock Matadors head coach Paul Gilbert talked about dropping players more into the central area to open up that attacking third for his team.

The second half began, and it was all Matadors from there. They were constantly knocking at the door of the Arizona goal, and overall, they were a much more dangerous team. Thirty-five minutes passed by, with chances occurring but nothing concrete for the home team. Then the game broke open for the Matadors as Arizona midfielder Giancarlo Canas-Jarquin was given a straight red for dangerous play when he stuck out his foot straight into the stomach of Lubbock foward Luke Jones.

From here, the attacks got more dangerous, with the Matadors having the man advantage. Then, in the 83rd minute, Shuma Sasaki whipped in a cross that was scored by Salvador Martinez. Coach Gilbert could not stop singing his praises for the Japanese winger calling him “unbelievable” and being grateful that he has joined the Matadors. With the game all tied up after regulation, the game went into extra time.

Early into extra time, it was now the Matadors who were on the receiving end of a red card, as Bruno Garcia was given his second yellow. This still did not stop the Matadors from attacking, as the fatigue from the Monsoon was clearly showing having already used up their lone substitute.

Time was winding down in the second half of extra time. It seemed all but certain that the game was heading for penalty kicks. Then, in the 118th minute, a brilliant move from Shuma Sasaki allowed him to slip a pass into Lucca Motta, who perfectly squared it to the hero of the night for Lubbock: Toufik Najem. Najem’s goal sent the packed stadium into a frenzy.

The referee would blow his whistle for full-time and Lubbock came away with a 2-1 victory.

“This Open Cup is so special, and we gotta keep this going in our country because it brings people together; it brings the soccer community together,” said Gilbert.

The Matadors will advance to the Second Round which will take place the week of April 2-3.
