The professional teams in Division II and Division III leagues (USL Championship, USL League One, and NISA) now know who they will or could face in the Second Round.
The United States Soccer Federation announced the pairings for the Second Round of the 107th edition of the tournament that will take place April 7-9. In Round 2, the 19 winners of Round 1 will join 25 USL Championship, 6 USL League One, and 8 NISA teams in 29 matches. This is the largest round by number of matches in the Modern Era.
The hosts for the First Round, and all future rounds, are determined by random selection. If both teams apply to host and both teams meet the federation’s minimum venue standards, then the home team is decided by random draw.
The winners from Round 2 will advance to the Third Round which is scheduled to be played April 21-23. The 11 lowest ranked Division I (MLS) teams will enter in this round.
All games will be exclusively broadcast live on ESPN+ as part of the tournament’s new media rights agreement.
Interesting Notes:
- This is, by far, the earliest start for the Second Round in the Modern Era (1995-present). Prior to this, the earliest the Second Round had started was in 2014 when it began on May 13.
- The single-game Modern Era attendance record for the Second Round is 12,790 which was set in 2017 in a match between AFC Cleveland (NPSL) and FC Cincinnati (USL) at Nippert Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio (May 17, 2017).
- The number of Open Division teams that have eliminated professional teams since 1996 is 78. USL League Two has eliminated 56 pro teams, the Open Division Local teams from the USASA have eliminated 18 and the NPSL has upset 4.
- The last Division III team to reach the Semifinals was Richmond Kickers in 2011.
