2015 US Open Cup Round 2: Tommy Stewart’s hat trick leads Sacramento Republic to win over Sonoma County Sol, 4-2 (video)

May 23, 2015 by Evan Ream

sacramento-republic-logoIt was a night of firsts in California’s capital.

Sacramento Republic FC forward Tommy Stewart became the first Northern Irish player in the US Open Cup modern era to score a hat trick.

That hat trick was the first hat trick tallied in the Republic’s four-game Open Cup history.

The Republic became the first team to draw over 10,000 fans (10,386) in a Second Round game, breaking the previous record of 9,339 set by the Columbus Crew in 2001.

In the end, it was a wild 4-2 win for Sacramento over the NPSL’s Sonoma County Sol that, in classic Open Cup fashion, featured plenty of drama.

First it appeared as if the Republic would score an easy victory as Stewart scored a goal and set up another from Gabe Gonzalez in the first 12 minutes of the match.

Though Sacramento dominated the possession, the Sol pulled a goal back 14 minutes later when Sonoma forward Omar Nuno picked up a ball near the top of the box, turned and fired it into the upper 90 of Dominik Jakubek’s goal to half the deficit.

“I think this game should have been over , but we made it a little difficult for ourselves,” said Republic head coach Preki. “We got lucky in the end.”

Just as the Sol thought they were getting momentum, Stewart scored his second goal just before halftime after capitalizing on a defensive miscue set up by Republic midfielder Zev Taublieb.

Stewart scored the fourth goal – set up by Sacramento-native Cameron Iwasa – 16 minutes after the break to extend the lead, but the Sol answered right back with another banger from Nuno just 12 minutes after the break.

In the 76th minute, the Sol looked to be making a legitimate case for a comeback when Jakubek took a Sol player down in the box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot.

Up stepped Taylor Varnadore, whose shot beat Jakubek, but not the post, leading to an eruption from the Tower Bridge Battalion, who were standing behind the goal that Varnadore shot on.

Holding a two-goal lead, the Republic figured to be in the next round drama free until the 87th minute, when a rough tackle from Jesus Arroyo brought down Stewart in the middle of the field.

Writhing in pain, Stewart had to be stretchered off the field due to an apparent ankle injury, and the Republic were forced to play the rest of the game with 10 men as they had already used all their subs.

“Goals will come in bunches and different places. I’m not really worried who scores them. Tommy was on the end of some goals tonight and that was good, but we still should have had more goals,” Preki said.

The Republic will host Chula Vista FC of the USASA on Wednesday at Bonney Field in a Third Round matchup.

“They’re not amateurs. They went to Arizona and beat Arizona, who’s in our league,” Preki said. “I’m expecting a tough game.”

To help cover travel costs, Chula Vista have started a GoFundMe campaign (gofundme.com/uvvs9h6e).

2015 US Open Cup Round 1: Subs steal show as Sonoma County Sol edge Burlingame Dragons in OT

May 14, 2015 by Tim Jaxon

Acevedo and Larson
In a hard fought battle, the Sonoma County Sol defeated the Burlingame Dragons FC 2-1 in the First Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in Santa Rosa, Calif. on Wednesday night. Angel Acevedo netted the game winner in extra time to push the home team onto a second round match-up next week against Sacramento Republic FC.

Both teams had chances throughout the match. While the Sol maintained a possession advantage during the first half, the Dragons looked dangerous on the counterattack with their speedy forwards Gabriel Silviero and Fredy Razo seeing a number of shots on goal.

The game appeared to be heading to extra time scoreless when substitute Alfonso Verde received a deep cross and put his header on frame past goalkeeper Arturo Ornelas to take the lead for the visitors in the 77th minute. A flurry of attacks by the Sol finally pierced the Burlingame defenses just before full time as midfielder Alfonso Salazar grabbed a pass from Taylor Varnadore and pushed a half volley beyond the hands of Dragons goalkeeper Josh Cohen. Cohen had been stellar all night up until letting in the vital goal.

Acevedo put the Sol up 2-1 with a mazy dribble through the center of the Burlingame defense in the 97th minute.

“Honestly, I just got the ball and had a bad first touch.”, Acevedo said about his game winner. “Once I got it back under control I just hit it with everything I had.”

Burlingame spent the rest of extra time vying for an equalizing goal, aided by an injury to Brenton Frame in the 100th minute. The substitute went down along the touchline with a twisted ankle and the Sol played the last 20 minutes with 10 men. The Dragons had a number of shots that came close including a strong ball by Armando Garcia that bounced solidly off the woodwork, but the Sol held on to pick up their first tournament win since 2009.

2015 US Open Cup qualifying: Sonoma County Sol stun CD Aguiluchos USA 2-1 to return to US Open Cup

March 22, 2015 by Josh Hakala

sonoma-county-sol-2014-logoThe Sonoma County Sol are headed back to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup after a dramatic 2-1 win over CD Aguiluchos USA in the championship game of the NPSL’s Golden Gate Conference qualifying tournament. The Sol, playing in front of a home crowd at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif., took a 1-0 lead into the 89th minute but CDA tied the game just before stoppage time. However, with less than a minute to go in stoppage time, Simon Wheatley sent the Sol to the US Open Cup for the first time since 2010 with a goal in the 93rd minute.

The Sol have qualified for the tournament for the fifth time in team history, having made the Open Cup in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010.

The Sol opened up the scoring just before halftime as Trevor Hurst sent a cross into the box that found Brandon Boone. Boone volleyed it home in the 44th minute.

Sonoma County managed to hold CD Aguiluchos in check for most of the second half and were mere minutes away from punching a ticket to the tournament when CDA found an equalizer. As CDA was throwing everything forward, a long ball was played from midfield into the penalty area. The goalkeeper stayed home to guard the net and a scrum ensued as players battled for the loose ball. Eventually the ball fell to CDA’s Matheus Freire who blasted it into the back of the net.

However, due to a lengthy injury stoppage earlier in the half, more time was added to the end of the game, giving the Sol five extra minutes to find a game-winning goal. A few minutes into stoppage time a ball was played in behind the defense and after the initial shot was saved a CDA defender attempted to clear the ball to safety. Unfortunately for CDA, a club seeking its second straight Open Cup berth, the defender’s clearance was a poor one and it fell to second half sub Wheatley who pounced on it and scored the game-winner.

Assistant coach Ben Zeimer, who was filling in for head coach Vince Cortezzo, was proud of his team’s effort.

“I think we were in control for most of the game,” said Zeimer, who guided the Sol to a pair of US Open Cup tournaments as head coach in 2009 and 2010. “Generally we dominated possession and as we tired a bit, they started to chase the game more and put us under pressure.”

Zeimer was particularly proud of how his defense held former Sol player, and 2013 NPSL player of the year Ross Middlemiss in check.

The NPSL’s final spot in the 2015 US Open Cup will be determined on Sunday night (Mar. 22) when FC Tacoma 253 hosts the San Diego Flash. The game will be played at Memorial Stadium in Seattle with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time.

2015 US Open Cup qualifying: San Diego Flash need penalty kicks to join NPSL West’s final four (video)

March 16, 2015 by Evan Ream

npsl-logo-largeAfter returning to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the first time in 13 years, the San Diego Flash had their run end before it began. Their first round opponent forfeited, and the Flash were forced to forfeit in Round 2 due to the lack of a suitable field. Now, San Diego are one win away from qualifying for the fifth time in team history (dating back to the Flash’s previous incarnation as a pro team from 1995-2001).

On Saturday, the Flash repeated as NPSL Southwest Conference tournament winners, moving them on to a one-game playoff against Northwest Conference champion FC Tacoma 253. The game will be played on Sunday, Mar. 22 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle with the winner qualifying for the 2015 US Open Cup.

Elsewhere, CD Aguiluchos and the Sonoma County Sol both advanced to the Golden Gate Conference final where another 2015 Open Cup berth will be determined next week (details below).

San Diego hosted Deportivo Coras USA of Riverside, Calif. at Balboa Stadium on the campus of San Diego High School, and came away with a wild 4-1 penalty kick victory after the two sides were deadlocked at 2-2 after extra time.

“If I could describe it in one word, it would be ‘entertaining,'” said Flash director of operations Robb Watson. “It was back and forth, both sides were very evenly paced. There were plenty of missed opportunities by both sides, it could have realistically ended in a 5-5 tie if it wasn’t a qualifier.”

While Flash goalkeeper James Stroud was able to save one of the Coras penalties in the shootout, the visitors missed the target on two of their other three attempts, letting forward Brandon Zuniga seal the victory by calmly sending the Deportivo goalkeeper the wrong way to book San Diego’s ticket up north.

Zuniga had earlier tied the game in the 19th minute with a header at the back post off an in-swinging ball from a set piece, 16 minutes after Francisco Hernandez had opened the scoring for Coras off a near post header on a corner kick.

The Flash would then take the lead through former Orange County Blues defender Duach Jock in the 27th minute before Coras leveled the game in the 39th on a Christian Zamora header.

When the second half and both periods of extra time ended scoreless, San Diego easily dispatched its first four penalties en route to victory.

When the Flash take on FC Tacoma on Sunday, it will just the second game in franchise history for their opponents. Tacoma defeated Portland Spartans FC 2-1 in the only game of the Northwest Conference tournament.

According to Watson, San Diego is looking for a long run in the tournament to honor former CEO Clent Alexander.

“It’s a starting point,” Watson said of the win Saturday. “It’s good for the players to have this opportunity to grow. Some of the guys on our team are, I’m not going to say old, but are getting to the point where they maybe aren’t going to have another opportunity to advance.

“With the recent loss of our CEO, who passed away, it would be nice to move as far along as we could in the cup should we beat Tacoma.”

Aguiluchos, Sol advance to Golden Gate Conference Final.

Defending Golden Gate Conference champions CD Aguiluchos USA opened 2015 in the most emphatic way possible, stomping the San Francisco Stompers 8-1 thanks, in large part, to 2013 NPSL National Player of the Year Ross Middlemiss.

The striker was able to bag four goals for Aguiluchos, who qualified for the tournament in 2014 by virtue of defeating Portland Spartans FC in a playoff.

This year, the winner of the Golden Gate Conference will qualify directly for the Open Cup.

Middlemiss’ former team, the Sonoma County Sol defeated Real San Jose 4-3 Sunday night in San Jose with goals from Brandon Boone, Carlos Hernandez, Tyler Hurst, and Taylor Varnadore to garner hosting rights for the final, which will be played Saturday at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif.

The Sol are looking for their fifth Open Cup appearance after qualifying in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010. Their best results were second round runs in 2006, and in 2009 when they also were NPSL national champions.

2014 US Open Cup qualifying: CD Aguiluchos edge Sonoma County Sol in PKs to win NPSL Golden Gate title (video)

March 12, 2014 by Evan Ream

Through a goal by Jorge Ruiz and four made penalties, CD Aguiluchos USA edged Sonoma County Sol to win the National Premier Soccer League’s Golden Gate Conference Open Cup qualifying tournament. They won 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw after extra time Saturday night at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif.

With the win, they put themselves in position to qualify for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the first time. At this time, the format for the 101st edition of the tournament has yet to be announced. However, according to the Seattle Sporting FC Facebook page, the winner of the Seattle-Spartans FC Northwest final will visit CDA on Saturday, March 15 in what is expected to be a “Win & You’re In” match.

Sonoma struck first through a goal from forward Ross Middlemiss before Salvadorian forward Jorge Ruiz took advantage of a Sol goalkeeping error to level the game in the first half.

The sides then played through a scoreless second half, and two scoreless extra time periods to set up a penalty kick shootout.

Ruiz, Kevin Sanchez, Francisco Mendoza and Rodis Rebera all scored for the Oakland-based team to take them to where they’ve never been before.

“We’re very excited because we represent the Salvadorian community,” Aguiluchos chairman Roger Amaya said. “This helps our marketing and support and is good for us because more people will come and believe in our team.”

Founded in 2012, CD Aguiluchos USA is named after 15-time Salvadorian champion CD Aguila similar to how Chivas USA is named after Guadelajara of Mexico, though no formal partnership exists between Aguiluchos and their namesake.

The team includes former Aguila and El Salvador striker Rudis Corrales, who played 77 times for his country of birth, scoring 17 goals.

“He made history in our culture,” Amaya said of Corrales. “And now he’s trying to help us.”

The team is made up mostly of Salvadorian and Mexican players, but does include former San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo forward Julian Nash. Prior to being drafted into Major League Soccer, Nash, an Oakland native, was the top scorer of the 2004 US Open Cup when he scored four goals for the Chicago Fire Reserves of the PDL.

Aguiluchos made their debut in the NPSL last year, finishing 4th in the old West-Northern Conference with a 3-6-3 record.
They are coached by former Aguila forward and manager Hugo Coria.

2014 US Open Cup qualifying: Sonoma County Sol, three other NPSL clubs, advance in qualifying

Second half strikes from Tyler Hurst and Taylor Varnadore lifted the Sonoma County Sol to a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Real San Jose Saturday night in the semifinals of the Golden Gate Conference US Open Cup qualifying tournament. The Sol are one of four National Premier Soccer League teams to take another step toward qualifying for the 2014 US Open Cup.

With the win, the Sol ensured they will play next weekend in the tournament final at Rancho Cotate High School, the site of Saturday night’s triumph.  Their scheduled opposition, CD Aguiluchos USA, saw off the San Francisco Stompers 1-0 in the conference’s other tense semifinal. The deciding goal came in the 89th minute when Nestor Palacios came through with a 30-yard strike to send the club to the Golden Gate Conference’s championship game. The winner is expected to qualify for the 2014 US Open Cup, but the official format has yet to be announced by the US Soccer Federation.

Hurst, who netted his second goal in as many games, opened the scoring for Sonoma County in the 47th minute in opportunistic fashion.  As a frantic scramble in the Real San Jose goalmouth cast doubt on the continuation of the scoreless stalemate, the ball fell perfectly into the path of the on-charging midfielder, who promptly fired the ball into the lower-left corner and the Sol into a lead they would not relinquish.

Reacting to the setback, Real San Jose opted to switch to a more attacking formation, pushing an extra player forwards and leaving just three back to defend. The move failed to spur the desired effect, though, as a skilled Sol side poured forward with even more gusto than before.  The orange-clad Sonoma County squad were especially busy on the right flank, repeatedly testing the mettle of their reeling southern neighbors during a dominant stretch sandwiched between both goals.

The insurance the Sol craved finally arrived in the 71st minute and took the form of an extraordinary solo effort. Varnadore, who had been a prime culprit in terrorizing the San Jose defense, narrowly missed doubling the lead twice in the preceding exchanges—once with a downward header from a long throw that was well saved, and once with a close-range shot that appeared to skim the right post.  But on this occasion, he left no doubt about the outcome.

In the undisputed highlight of the night, Varnadore stormed through the gap between Real San Jose’s defense and midfield and into the final third with the ball roped to his feet and then unleashed a left-footed stunner into the top-left corner to cap his splendid run and give the Sol a 2-0 cushion. The goal all but extinguished Real San Jose’s lingering hope of equalizing.

The remaining twenty minutes offered more of the same, as the Sol continued to assert their influence on the increasingly one-sided encounter. With the affair beginning to take on the air of an inevitable Sonoma County Sol victory, Brandon Boone very nearly added a third.  As the Real San Jose keeper was sprawled on the ground, Boone latched onto a bouncing ball, but his effort from the penalty spot was deflected and fell agonizingly to the wrong side of the crossbar.

Then, as Real San Jose was forced to come to grips with their waning hopes in the latter stages, the yellow cards started to emerge from the referee’s pocket more frequently.  Despite the frustration on both sides, none of the cautions turned a darker shade and both teams finished the game with their squads numerically intact.

As mentioned in the report of the Sol’s 2-1 first round victory against the Sacramento Gold last week, the Sonoma County side is bidding to make its first appearance in the US Open Cup since 2010, when the Californians fell in the opening round to the Portland Timbers.  At the time, the Timbers were in their final season prior to joining Major League Soccer as an expansion club along with fellow Cascadia Cup contender Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Sol have qualified for the Open Cup four times since 2005, tied for the most by any NPSL club with the Brooklyn Italians.

In other NPSL US Open Cup qualifying action Saturday in California, two teams advanced to the semifinals of the Southwest Conference. The Santa Clarita Storm only needed a 17th minute goal from Robbie Giuk and a stingy defense to keep Del Rey City at bay and advance by a slim 1-0 margin. According to the Storm, they limited their opponents to just three shots on goal for the entire game. The Storm move on to the conference final four where they will meet FC Hasental on Saturday. FC Hasental will host at Thousand Oaks High School in an attempt to qualify for the second year in a row.

In the other opening round game, FC Force defeated Temecula FC 5-2 to reach the semifinals. The 2014 expansion team will face a big test in the next round as they will travel to San Diego to take on the Flash, who have won two of the last three division titles.

The Golden Gate final will take place on Saturday, March 8 at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif., while the Southwest semifinals are scheduled for Sunday, March 9. Details are listed below.

2014 US Open Cup qualifying: Sonoma County Sol knock off Sacramento Gold to kick off NPSL qualifying

February 24, 2014 by Evan Ream

Behind goals from Eric Larson and Tyler Hurst, the Sonoma County Sol dispatched the Sacramento Gold 2-1 Saturday night at Rancho Cotate High School in Rohnert Park, Calif. to move one step closer to qualifying for the 101st edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

The win puts the Sol into the semifinals of the 2014 Golden Gate Conference US Open Cup Qualifying Tournament.

“It wasn’t our most beautiful game, but it was our first game , so we feel like we’re going to get better with our style of play and get back to the way we want to play the game,” said third-year Sol head coach Vinnie Cortezzo. “That being said, it was a great result for us. Last year, Sacramento knocked us out in the early rounds of Open Cup qualifying so it was nice to get a little revenge.”

Sonoma got off to a fast start in the match when some prolonged possession through Nico Spann on the right wing. Spann crossed it to Hurst who took a heavy touch past a defender then knocked the ball across the mouth of the goal to Eric Larson who smashed the ball into the net from eight yards out in the 14th minute.

Sacramento, who qualified for last year’s Open Cup, quickly responded when a 35-yard set piece was served into no man’s land and headed home by Jose Martinez in the 22nd minute.

Shortly after the break, Hurst scored what would prove to be the game-winner. In the 47th minute, Larson received the ball at the top of the Sacramento box, dribbled in, and found Hurst who hit a slow-roller off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net.

The Sol, who were the 2013 NPSL runners-up, dominated the rest of the game, coming close on a few more occasions, but further goals were not needed.

“I thought we could have scored a couple more,” Cortezzo said. “We had some really great opportunities.”

The Sol will now change their focus to Real San Jose who they will host Saturday at 7 p.m. also at Rancho Cotate High School.

“There tends to be quite a bit of change from year-to-year and I haven’t seen so I don’t know exactly what to expect,” Cortezzo said. “We’re expecting a good game and a tough team and a very physical game. That has always been the case with San Jose.”

The Sol last qualified for the US Open Cup proper in 2010 where they were beaten in the first round of the then USSF Division 2 Professional League Portland Timbers.

Their best runs of the four times that they have qualified were in 2006 when they made it to the second round before losing 1-0 to the USL First Division Charleston Battery in Charleston and in 2009 when they made it to the second round before losing to the Portland Timbers 3-0, who were that year playing in the USL First Division, in Santa Rosa. The Sol and the Brooklyn Italians remain the only clubs from the NPSL who have qualified for the Open Cup four times since the league launched in 2005.

2013 US Open Cup qualifying: Saturday’s NPSL “Win & You’re In” to decide who will join Sacramento Gold in Open Cup (video)

March 27, 2013 by Josh Hakala

The National Premier Soccer League’s Western Conference US Open Cup qualifying tournament will wrap up this weekend when the San Diego Flash take on FC Hasental in a “Win & You’re In” match on Saturday. The winner will join the Sacramento Gold in the 100th edition of the tournament who punched their ticket with a convincing 5-1 win over the Sonoma County Sol back on March 23.

The Western Conference represents two of the NPSL’s eight spots in the Open Cup, with three teams yet to be announced by the league.

The qualifying tournament was split into the conference’s north and south divisions. All five teams took part from the Northern Division and the Gold cruised their way into the championship game with back-to-back shutouts over newcomers CD Aguiluchos USA (3-0) and Real San Jose (2-0).

The Sol entered the tournament as the only team in the field who have qualified for the US Open Cup. In fact, they have reached the tournament four times: 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010. They have a 1-3-2 (1-1 in PKs) record in their four appearances with their lone regulation win coming against the PDL’s Orange County Blue Star in 2009. They used their experience and skill to crush the San Francisco Stompers 5-2 in the semifinal round while getting goals from Brandon Boone, Chris Daly and the Hurst brothers Tyler and Trevor.

The Northern Division’s “Win & You’re In” match came down to the Sol, who ran away with the division crown last year with a 4-0-2 record, and the Gold, who finished second last year. In the opening 20 minutes, it appeared as though the Sol, who swept both games against the Gold last year by a combined score of 8-3, were going to make another Open Cup appearance.

Sonoma’s Ross Middlemass opened the scoring in the 18 minute, but it was all Sacramento after that. The Gold scored five unanswered goals, including a hat trick and an assist by Manolo Pina.  Clemente Fonseca also scored and assisted on two other goals, including a goal by John Jones II. With the win, the Gold become the first Sacramento-based club to qualify for the US Open Cup since the Sacramento Knights of the NPSL (then known as the MPSL) reached the Second Round in 2004. If they are lucky enough to host their opening round game, that will mark the first time an Open Cup game has been played in the city of Sacramento since 1982.

In the other bracket, both first round games were forfeited, as the Las Vegas Stallions and Orange County Spartans did not properly register their players. This sent FC Hasental and San Diego Boca into the final four where they were matched up against the Santa Clarita Storm and the San Diego Flash, respectively.

In what was a theme that weekend, the Storm scored an early goal, but Hasental rallied with goals from Manuel Cazares and Alberto Anguiano to win 2-1. (SEE highlights below)

In the other semifinal, it was a San Diego derby as the Flash came back to beat San Diego Boca 4-2. Boca got on the board early with goals from David Luquen and Joe Schloss in the first 15 minutes. However, just like the other two games, the team that fell behind early came roaring back as the Flash scored four unanswered goals from Brandon Zuniga, Daniel Ortega, Justin Picou, and Andy Ortega.

The Flash will host the “Win & You’re In” match against FC Hasental on March 30 at 5 p.m. local time at Del Norte High School. If Hasental wins, it will mark their first appearance in the US Open Cup, but if the Flash qualify, it will be the franchise’s first time in the tournament since 2001 when they were a professional team in the USL’s A-League. 2013 US Open Cup qualifying: NPSL West tournament continues this weekend; Sacramento Gold qualify (UPDATED)

March 20, 2013 by Josh Hakala

UPDATE: According to the San Diego Flash’s official website, the Orange County Spartans had to forfeit their 2-0 win over San Diego Boca due to improper player registration.

UPDATE (3/24 – 12:41 a.m. ET): The Sacramento Gold have qualified for the 2013 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 5-1 win over the Sonoma County Sol.  FC Hasental also advanced to a “Win & You’re In” match next weekend with a 2-1 win over the Santa Clarita Storm. Results updated below.

The National Premier Soccer League Western Conference is holding a qualifying tournament for the 100th edition of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, and the competition is down to six teams. Of the six remaining teams, just two will advance to the US Open Cup, and according to NPSL officials, both will begin play in Round 1.

Each division of the Western Conference will submit their winner into the 2013 Open Cup, and the Northern Division has already determined their championship game. On Saturday, March 23, the Sacramento Gold will host the Sonoma County Sol at River City High School in West Sacramento in a “Win & You’re In” match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.

The Sacramento Gold reached the Northern Division final with a pair of shutout victories away from home. On March 9, they traveled to Oakland, Calif. and defeated CD Aguiluchos USA 3-0. The scoring opened with an own goal in the 31st minute, and the game remained tight until John Jones and Eliot Ricks-Chambers scored clinching goals in the 78th and 83rd minute respectively.

“We came away with a positive result but we only expect to get better,” said Sacramento coach Ruben Mora. “With a lot of returning players it will not take long to find our rhythm. You can’t say enough about the role the solid defense and goalkeeping played in the shutout.”

A week later, the Gold earned a 2-0 win at Real San Jose to punch their ticket to the final where they will face the Sol who only needed to win one game to reach the championship game. The Sol received a bye into the semifinals and defeated the San Francisco Stompers 5-2 on March 16.

The Sol are the only team in the field who have qualified for the US Open Cup. They have reached the tournament four times: 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010. They have a 1-3-2 (1-1 in PKs) record in their four appearances with their lone regulation win coming against the PDL’s Orange County Blue Star in 2009.

In the other bracket, the final four is set with the Orange County Spartans — formerly known as the Fullerton Rangers — traveling to San Diego to take on the Flash, while Santa Clarita will host FC Hasental. Both games will take place on March 23 and are both are scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. local time.

The Spartans were the only team that had to earn their way into the semifinals, as they defeated San Diego Boca 2-0 in the opening round. FC Hasental was scheduled to play the Las Vegas Stallions in Round 1, but according to Hasental team officials, the Stallions failed to submit the necessary paperwork for their players and were forced to forfeit. The Flash and Santa Clarita both received byes into the semifinals. The final is set for March 30.

Last year, the NPSL received 6.5 spots and the West had 1.5 berths. The Rangers qualified while the Bay Area Ambassadors claimed the “half berth.” Bay Area faced fellow California club Stanislaus United Turlock Express in a play-in game — Stanislaus United won that match 3-0 to become the first US Club Soccer team to qualify for the Open Cup.

This year, the NPSL received eight spots, and three of those teams have been confirmed: FC Sonic Lehigh Valley, Madison 56ers and Chattanooga FC. According to NPSL officials, the two teams that emerge from the Western Conference will join those three teams in the first round of the US Open Cup. The remaining three teams are still to be determined, with two of them beginning their cup run in the Qualifying Round against either the US Club Soccer representative or the US Sports Specialty Association representative. The third team will begin play in Round 1.

2012 US Open Cup qualifying: Fullerton Rangers clinch NPSL berth, Bay Area Ambassadors reach play-in game

The National Premier Soccer League qualifiers for the 2012 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup are nearly complete with one Western Conference team clinching a spot, while another put themselves one win away from the 99th edition of the tournament.

The Fullerton Rangers defeated San Diego Boca, 3-2, in their final qualifying match to punch their ticket to the US Open Cup. The club formerly known as the Santa Ana Winds before an off-season rebranding, will enter the tournament in the first round, which is scheduled to begin May 15. It was a single-elimination tournament for the Western Conference’s Northwest flight and Fullerton advanced to the final without allowing a goal. They defeated Santa Clarita Storm 5-0 on March 24 and three days later, edged FC Hasental 1-0 to reach the final against Boca.

On the north side of the conference, the Bay Area Ambassadors punched their ticket to the tournament with a win over the Sacramento Gold in a penalty kick shootout (VIDEO BELOW). It looked as though Bay Area was going to walk away winners in regulation with Brayan Walle scoring off a rebound in the 64th minute, but Sacramento’s Manolo Pina tied the game in the 82nd minute. There was no extra time played as the match was decided by penalty kicks. The shootout was knotted up at 4-4 when Bay Area goalkeeper Derek Leslie dove to his left, but was still able to get a foot on Mykell Bates’ shot down the middle to make the save. Mohamed Abalil would follow up with a goal on the next attempt to send the Ambassadors to an April 28 Open Cup play-in match that they will host against the winner of US Club Soccer’s qualifying tournament. The Ambassadors will be attempting to qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2010, when they lost an opening round match against the PDL’s Kitsap Pumas, 4-2.

Bay Area’s path to the play-in game started in the Southwest Flight’s round-robin competition. They blew a 3-1 lead in the final minutes to Sonoma County Sol to finish regulation 3-3. The referee mistakenly failed to call for penalty kicks to decide the outcome, but the Ambassadors made sure that error didn’t matter as they stomped the San Francisco Stompers by a score of 8-0 to put them into the final against Sacramento. Walle and Dylan Leslie each scored a pair of goals in the victory. The Gold cruised through their group, beating Real San Jose 2-0 and North Coast Tsunami 5-0.

There was some confusion following both teams earning their respective victories as to which team would enter the Open Cup directly, and which would participate in the play-in game against a US Club Soccer representative. The league website erroneously announced that Bay Area would get the Open Cup spot, but TheCup.us later confirmed that Fullerton have indeed qualified.

Five other NPSL clubs have already booked their place in the 2012 competition, as all of the other conferences decided to submit their teams based on 2011 results. Already qualified are last year’s NPSL champion Jacksonville United, Southeast Conference co-champion Georgia Revolution, Northeast-Atlantic Conference title holder Brooklyn Italians, and Midwest Conference winner Milwaukee Bavarians (the NPSL version of the Bavarian Soccer Club). Originally the league announced the Erie Admirals would represent the Northeast-Keystone Conference, but the club elected to withdraw from the Open Cup, allowing runner-up FC Sonic to replace them (as TheCup.us had originally reported).

This is just the second year NPSL teams have been given direct access to the Open Cup. Prior to last season, clubs had to get in through the USASA’s regional qualifying tournaments.
