For the first time since 2013, a third division professional team is heading to the Quarterfinals after Union Omaha upset Minnesota United on the road, 2-1 in the Fifth Round of the 2022 US Open Cup.

With the win, Minnesota United becomes the first Minnesota club in the history of the US Open Cup to advance to the championship game. They will face Atlanta United FC on Aug. 27 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Colombian connection offered a potent punch Wednesday at Allianz Field. Combining for three of Minnesota’s goals in the 4-1 win, Darwin Quintero and Angelo Rodriguez propelled the Loons to their first victory in four tries against Sporting KC.

After last year’s historic run to the quarterfinals and a roster built to compete again this year, FC Cincinnati’s run in the 2018 U.S. Open Cup came to an abrupt end in the fourth round, falling 3-1 via penalty shootout after a scoreless regulation to Minnesota United.
