2025 US Open Cup Qualifying: Late goal, PK shootout win propel NJ Alliance to first USOC

On a windy night in Clifton, New Jersey Alliance FC and Steel Pulse FC battled like two teams near the top of their respective tables. Stoppage time goals by both teams forced a penalty kick shootout after 120 minutes with the score tied 2-2. In the end, Alliance keeper Yamil Macias made two huge saves to give his team the win, 4-2 in PKs, and qualify for their first ever US Open Cup tournament in 2025.

NJAFC are the first Open Division Local team from the Garden State to qualify for the US Open Cup since FC Motown in 2017.

NJAFC head coach Robert Kruk said after the game that he knows his group is up for playing in America’s national soccer tournament..

“They’re looking for a new challenge,” Kruk said following the PK shootout. “It’s so hard in the UPSL because we’ve been on top of that league and, again, in the national tournament (and) in the playoffs, it’s one game. It’s a card here, a goal here changes everything and we haven’t again.

“New competition, new faces, new teams, it’s always a challenge to play and guys get up for it.”

On the other side, Steel Pulse manager Mike Pieterson was proud of his group reaching this far. They have a league playoff semifinal coming up and state cups, including the Maryland Stewart Cup which could lead to a possible National Amateur Cup in 2025.

“We’re always proud of our work, especially when we give it our all,” Pieterson said. “This is an improvement from the past. So what we’re gonna do is make some kind of introspective, look to be able to plan and come back a little bit harder.”

Saturday night’s match at Athenia Steel Park was the third straight home match for NJ Alliance, and a devoted crowd of 60 fans came out for the monumental game. The home side had reached the final round of qualifying last year but fell in penalty kicks to Vereinigung Erzgebirge on the road. Meanwhile Steel Pulse, playing in their first road game of qualifying, had never played in a “Win & You’re In” match prior to Saturday.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the first half. The Pulse had the edge in the first 20 minutes, forcing keeper Macias to make a few saves and jump on loose balls in the box. The visitors weren’t scared to be aggressive either, fouling NJ Alliance in their own end multiple times and giving the home side free kicks in dangerous spots. But these chances were culled for the most part.

NJAFC took the momentum in the last twenty minutes of the half, racking up corner kicks but not getting many dangerous looks on net.

The second half began much like the first half did. NJ was playing long balls, probably being the more tactical of the two united. Pulse was being more aggressive. The visitors had an issue when Brandon Williamson went down with a non-contact injury, holding the back of his left calf.

Manager Mike Pieterson noted after the match that Williamson wasn’t 100% coming into the game, and with his team missing some players, he might have aggravated something trying to push himself. Still, the game was open for anyone to win.

The game left the rails in the 82nd minute when Emiland Elezaj scored the opening goal for the home side. Brian Canales sent a low ball towards the goal, which got past a diving Patrick Tettah and hit off a sliding Elezaj. The ball didn’t have enough momentum and Elezaj scooted on the ground quickly to tap it in the net for the 1-0 lead. It was Elezaj’s third straight qualifying match with a goal and his fourth overall goal of qualifying.

With time winding down, Alliance tried to see the game out as best they could. The home side made two subs, though one wasn’t initially planned. Elezaj went to ground following a play and had to be helped off the field in the 86th minute, with early “reports” saying the Albania native broke his toe. Still, overall Alliance was being defensive and earned two yellow cards after the goal.

In the second minute of stoppage time, the Pulse were still driving and a highball found its way to Stephen Jude on the left side. He shot on target towards the right post, but NJAFC’s Kelvin Preciado intercepted it and headed the ball into his own net. Officially speaking, since Jude’s first shot was on target the goal is credited to him.

Regardless, Steel had a Pulse. Right after the goal, Steel’s keeper Tettah ran to midfield and called to be subbed off and replaced with Justin Appler. The visitors nearly got the game winner in the sixth minute of stoppage time when a cross from the right side was just a few steps ahead of an attacker. Instead, the game went to extra time.

Normally, allowing a game-tying goal would crush a team. But NJAFC head coach Robert Kruk was, admittedly, up for the challenge.

“I think it was a blessing. We had a semi final in the UPSL (that) we lost last weekend. It was a tight one. We could have won and we would have had to play a midweek game like Thursday.” Kruk explained. “I think that was a blessing. It gave us extra motivation to not end this good season, where we were building and building and building to get something out of it… We had a good heart to heart at the 90, then a great even heart to heart at the 15, and sometimes you just need a little bit of luck.”

The first 15 minutes of extra time went by as normal. A high Alliance shot hit off the football woodwork while a Pulse shot went just wide left of the post. Meanwhile, the home DJ was put on thin ice for continuously playing things during the game. All very normal things for lower division soccer.

In the second extra time period, it took 24 seconds for Pulse to break through. Running up the right side after kickoff, the visitors crossed in and shot but were blocked by a defender. The ball went back into play where Stephen Jude recovered it and passed off to Emmanuel Olusesi. His shot from 30 yards out arched between the post and an unready but jumping Macias to make it 2-1.

With their backs to the wall, the Alliance pushed forward. Yet another Pulse foul gave NJAFC a free kick in a dangerous spot, which was shot on target but saved in the 111th. With about five minutes to go Alliance made two subs in a last ditch effort to change the strategy. The team earned two corners but neither were very threatening.

On a last ditch play, beginning with a quick restart at midfield off a Pulse foul, NJ sent the ball to the right side before passing to the middle and finding Preciado. The player who caused the game to go to Extra Time helped extend it further, when he passed off to Dorgeles Coulibably on the right side of the box. A right footed shot as he slid to ground went between the post and diving keeper to once again tie the game.

“I was waiting for this goal because I always score when I play, always, when I say always, I always score,” Coulibably said afterwards. “It was amazing to score in the last minute of the game. I’m very happy.”

With momentum on their side, Alliance went into the shootout and made their first attempt. Pulse’s Olusesi, the goal scorer from extra time, stepped up for his attempt, took a few steps back, and proceeded to do a stutter run for about five seconds before his shot was saved by Macias. The next two rounds were perfect before Konrad Rodzeń converted for NJAFC. On a match point attempt, Diarra Zoumana’s shot was saved by Macias and the Alliance officially qualified for the tournament, 2-2 (4:2 on pks).

With his team qualifying for the USOC, coach Kruk was pretty open to playing anyone come March.

“Give us anybody. If we could get an MLS NEXT Pro team it would be great because you’re playing a name,” he said, unsure of what the format will be next year. “But give us anybody, we’ll play you anytime.”

2025 US Open Cup Qualifying: Record number of entrants compete in four rounds this fall

The US Soccer Federation announced the 114 clubs that will take part in Open Division Local qualifying for the 2024 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. These teams, a record amount for the qualifying tournament since it began in the fall of 2015, come from 24 states and the District of Columbia.

The previous record for most teams in the qualifying tournament was 108 teams, which was set in the fall of 2017 in the leadup to the 2018 US Open Cup. This year’s total is also seven more than the 107 that attempted to qualify for the 2024 tournament proper.

The most represented league for yet another year is the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL), comprising nearly half of the field with 50 entrants. The only other league with double digit entrants is the Eastern Premier Soccer League (EPSL) with 13. Coincidentally, both of these leagues had teams earn spots in the tournament proper via other means.

The four rounds of single elimination matches will take place over the rest of 2024 with 14 qualifiers being determined. Match-ups will be geographical to minimize travel for all teams. To achieve this, the 114 teams will be grouped into 14 regional pools from which the Qualifying Round draw will be conducted. The schedule for the qualifying rounds is as follows:

  • October 5-6, 2024 – First Qualifying Round
  • October 26-27, 2024 – Second Qualifying Round
  • November 16-17, 2024 – Third Qualifying Round
  • December, 7-8, 2024 – Fourth Qualifying Round

The pairings for the first round will be linked to here once that information becomes available.

This year’s tournament features a number of returning teams. Eight teams that qualified for the 2024 tournament are back seeking a repeat appearance, including Miami United FC who beat two professional teams earlier this year. Another team from this group is Azteca FC from Colorado, which has the most wins (17-1-1) of the new qualifying tournament era. They are seeking their fifth qualification in seven attempts, and also looking to forget an early exit from the 2024 tournament against Colorado Rapids 2 (MLS NEXT Pro).

Two teams have already qualified for next year’s tournament and bypassed the qualifying phase. Three-time US Open Cup champion New York Pancyprian Freedoms won the 2024 USASA National Amateur Cup in July to qualify. Likewise, Soda City FC from South Carolina won the 2024 UPSL Spring Championship to qualify for 2025.

Two other Open Division national leagues will bypass qualifying and enter in the First Round as well, using 2024 season results to determine entrants. USL League Two (USL-2) and National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) will each receive their own slots in the competition. As with last year the UPSL, although it meets Open Cup national league status, chose not to go down this qualifying route. Instead, it let each team in the league choose on its own if they want to participate or not in local qualifying.

In the announcement, US Soccer explained that a change by the US Open Cup committee have made additional slots available to teams that compete in the Open Division. Of the 32 slots reserved for Open Division teams, half (16) will be allocated to the two National Leagues (how many each league will receive is still to be determined). The other half will be allocated to the designated UPSL and USASA champions and the Qualifying Round entrants.

2025 US Open Cup Qualifying: Soda City FC punches ticket with wild UPSL championship win

August 12, 2024 by Michael Battista

On a warm summer’s evening at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA, home of USL Championship side Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, Soda City FC became the second team to qualify for the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The South Carolina side beat Inland Empire FC, 3-2 after extra time, to win the Spring 2024 United Premier Soccer League national championship in one of the most chaotic matches this year.

Since 2023, the UPSL Spring national champion, as the league has a split calendar format, has earned direct qualification into the following year’s US Open Cup. Last year, A.S. Frenzi became the first team to qualify via this method. This is Soda City’s first time qualifying for the Open Cup after narrowly missing out on making the tournament in two local qualifying appearances.

“Very excited (to be in the Open Cup),” said head coach George Trifos. “It’s a great competition and we’re privileged to be entered, especially being a national champion.”

To reach this game, both Soda City and Inland Empire needed to win semifinal matches on Friday. Inland Empire played Kansas City side Dodge City Toros FC to a 3-3 draw, before winning in penalty kicks 6-5. Soda City beat Rochester New York FC, 4-1.

RNYFC is not the same team that used to play in MLS NEXT Pro and forfeit its Second Round match in the 2023 Open Cup. The team is a soccer academy from Rochester, Empire United, that merged with RNYFC prior to its ceasing operations in March 2023, but has continued to use the name for academy purposes. Coincidentally, Soda City is a “sister” club to Rochester’s other former professional team, Flower City Union.

Following Dodge City’s win in the third place game, Soda City and Inland Empire took the field for a close clash to determine the UPSL National Champion. The first half was back and forth with neither side giving an inch.

Soda City took the lead in the 33rd minute when a corner kick bounced to Rauf Salifu on the left side. He cut towards the end line and crossed in, where an Inland player deflected the ball to clear. However, SCFC’s Cole Falco shot off the volley from inside the box to make it 1-0. It was Falco’s second goal in as many games after he scored against Rochester in the national semifinals.

That ended up being the only “natural” goal from openly play in a game with five goals.

Following the halftime break, Inland started to take more control. The emotions of the first half, which included forward Alexis Perez being injured and needing to be consoled by teammates as they headed off, were either put aside or fueled the group. It came to a head in the 51st minute after multiple IE attacks. A free kick near midfield by Empire’s Fernando Alejo was put into the box where SCFC’s Caleb Daniels accidentally headed the ball into his own net to tie the game.

If that wasn’t enough, both teams converted penalty kicks within a five minute span. Inland forward Cody Bell was fouled in the box by Soda City’s David Tuso. IEFC’s Brian Castillo stepped up to the spot and shot bottom right as keeper Jacob Cotton dove to the left, making it 2-1 in the 73rd.

A few minutes later, Inland returned the favor after Soda City’s Wynston Johnson was fouled in the box. Forward Rauf Salifu stepped up to the spot and shot to the left. IEFC keeper Luis Flores guessed correctly but couldn’t get a hand on it, tying the game once again, 2-2, in the 78th.

Neither team could find a go-ahead goal in regulation, meaning two more extra time 15 minute halves were in store. In the 95th minute, goal scorer Falco was involved in the game winner when he made a long throw-in towards the IEFC goal. Inland’s Darrin Vogel attempted to clear but headed right into the back of the net for the game’s second own goal to make it 3-2.

Inland was unable to find another equalizer in the rest of extra time and Soda City earned its first ever UPSL National Championship and first US Open Cup berth.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said coach Trifos. “We worked very hard to be here… we made the most of it and the boys are taking it home.”

Previously, Soda City took part in the Open Division Local qualifying tournaments for the 2019 and 2020 US Open Cups under the name Soda City FC Sorinex. In the fall of 2018, the team reached the third qualifying round before losing to fellow UPSL side America SC. The following year, Soda once again reached the third round, this time with it being a “Win & You’re In” match, but lost to Nashville United, 4-0.

According to TheCup.us records, Soda City is the ninth non-professional team to ever qualify for the tournament. Since 2022, four Open Division teams from South Carolina have qualified for the Open Cup.

The New York Pancyprian Freedoms won the USASA Region I Amateur Cup over Christos FC, 2-0, to qualify for July’s national tournament. Goals at the bookends of the match were enough to beat an over-extended Christos team, which had a USL League Two match earlier in the day. The game was played at the Ukrainian American Sports Center during a weekend in which Region I also crowned other champions ranging from Under-23 to women’s amateur cup. The Freedoms are looking to join an exclusive club of teams to win both the National Amateur Cup and US Open Cup. The last team to do it was the Freedoms’ EPSL rival New York Greek Americans back in 2014.

Indiana Invaders Sports Complex – South Bend, IN

Bavarian United SC is back in the Region II Final after an unbelievable comeback win over Akron City FC, 7-5 after extra time. Despite being the host, Bavarians elected to play the game in South Bend, Indiana as a “meet in the middle” compromise with Akron City. The NPSL side trailed heading into halftime but responded by scoring four goals. The two teams traded goals in the last ten minutes meaning the score was 5-2 in the 82nd minute. The six-time National Amateur Cup champions then pulled off one of the greatest comebacks not seen (because there was no stream). Three goals, including two in stoppage time, forced the game to extra time. Akron seemed deflated and allowed a goal in each extra time half to exit its inaugural tournament.

FC Milwaukee Torrent scored a late goal over Vlora FC to advance, 1-0, to its first-ever regional final. A scoreless first half saw a Torrent goal called back for offside and two Vlora chances held up by strong defensive plays by the visitors. The critical chance came with under ten minutes to play in regulation. A run down the right side saw a cross from the end line find Juan Lopez for the game’s only goal. For Vlora, the loss ends a historic tournament which saw the Minnesota side reach the regional semifinals for the first time. The team was the only team without a bye to the Quarterfinals to reach the final four of Region II.

Terminus FC beat NTX Black Ice, 5-1, in a blowout performance. The Georgia side trailed midway through the first half before equalizing just before halftime. Four unanswered goals, including a second for Mischael Francois, secured the win.

This and the previous game’s result put both Tobacco Road and Terminus at six points each. However, based on Region III’s tiebreakers (Greatest Goal Differential capped at 3 goals per match), Terminus jumped TRFC for first place in Group A (+5 GD vs +4 GD). This meant Terminus would advance to the Region III final with either a win or draw against Tobacco later in the day.

Terminus FC (GA – Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League)

MESA Soccer Complex, Field 2 – Greer, SC

Tobacco Road FC beat Terminus FC, 2-1, in a thrilling match to reach the USASA Region III Amateur Cup Final. It is TRFC’s second straight appearance in the regional final and the team’s third straight tournament reaching the knockout stage. Terminus took the lead in the 20th minute before Tobacco equalized five minutes later. The game was back and forth and Terminus knew a draw would be enough to get through. However the Georgia side went down to 10 men during the second half and eventually a stoppage time header goal sent the North Carolina side back to the championship game. TRFC head coach Cedric Burke only used one sub in this match in hopes of keeping his player’s fresh for a potential final on Sunday.

In the end, a late error sent a ball off an ASC player into the back of their own net to equalize for Naples. That tie was enough to put the NPSL team through and break the hearts of ASC fans.

The first team heading to July’s national championship is now known. FC Arizona punched their ticket to play for the National Amateur Cup, and a US Open Cup spot, in the 100th anniversary of the competition. Meanwhile the Midwest narrowed its field and the South set its own.

Since 2018, the champion of the National Amateur Cup, the highest tournament in the United States Adult Soccer Association, receives direct qualification to the following year’s U.S. Open Cup. For the last few years, TheCup.us has tracked the National Amateur Cup from its regional stages all the way up until the national final. These updates have been provided on Twitter / X and stats have been kept internally.

USASA is broken into four regions, each holding their own amateur cup tournament respectively. The champions of these four tournaments qualify for the national finals later this summer.

You can find a brief summary of every from this past weekend below. Additionally, here are links to the Twitter threads and articles made over the two months regarding other results:

The 2024 U.S. Open Cup continues on with the Round of 32 next week and the introduction of eight Major League Soccer teams. Meanwhile, at the complete other end of the U.S. Soccer system, another tournament is still in its early stages. The 2024 National Amateur Cup is underway in two regions of the country as the historic tournament celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Additionally, here are links to the Twitter threads made over the last month regarding other results:

  • April 7 (Region I)
  • April 14 (Region I & Region II)
  • April 20 (Region II)
