2013 US Open Cup First Round: Austin Aztex blanks NTX Rayados despite playing down a man

May 15, 2013 by Chris Hockman

The 100th edition of the US Open Cup had its first round on Tuesday and Austin Aztex won their first US Open Cup game since the squad’s rebirth thanks to a 3-0 win against amateurs NTX Rayados despite playing with 10 men for a majority of the contest.

Andres Cuero scored in the first half and Tony Rocha added one in the second half for the Aztex while the team benefitted from a Rayados own goal in the first half.

Austin will play the Wilmington Hammerheads in the second round on May 21 at House Park in Austin.

It was all Austin in the early going but the USL PDL team that opened its season on Saturday could not find a final touch to put the ball in right away.

In the third minute Austin’s Kris Tyrpak got the ball on the right of the box and hit a powerful shot in space that came back off the crossbar allowing North Texas to clear safely.

North Texas had a chance in the 10th minute as Victor Pinal broke free but timed his run poorly as he was flagged off for an offside.

Austin took the lead in the 14th minute after a shot from Chuy Cortez was saved but the Rayados failed to clear, which allowed Cuero to sneak the ball in. North Texas’ Raul Herrera made the save after it crossed the line.

Cortez nearly had a goal of his own as the roles were reversed with Cuero on the edge of the box volleying across for Cortez before shooting over the bar.

Later, Austin’s Aaron Guillen was shown a straight red card for contact with Herrera, who rolled around theatrically. To the referee’s credit Herrera was also shown a yellow for simulation.

The Aztex replaced Cortez with Walker Hume to cover Guillen’s position at the center defense in an effort to keep their passage into the second round safe.

Austin doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute as Tyrpak’s shot was redirected by Clifford Spencer into the back of his own net.

The second half started nervously with neither side really taking charge in what was an end-to-end period that produced little in a final product.

Austin had the first chance of the second half after a fluid series of passes allowed Tyrpak space in the box but he went wide of the post with his shot.

After the opening ten minutes of the half, North Texas saw plenty of the ball, but the closest it got was a solid shot from Alberto Rodriguez that could only find Austin keeper Josh Mikolewicz’s hands.

Austin looked content with a two-goal lead and a man disadvantage as they held off the Rayados and operated on the counter.

In the 72nd minute, Cuero ran at goal from the right and had a powerful low shot blocked away by Herrera over the crossbar.

Austin had a corner that almost went in off the foot of Rocha, but the ball was pushed out before the same happened again on the resulting corner. North Texas was able to recover in the scramble and clear the ball.

North Texas had a good chance in the 77th minute as Reese Wilson got through and saw his initial effort saved before the rebound was cleared by Zach Pope.

Austin added a third in the 85th minute as Rocha’s footwork bamboozled the Rayados defense before squeezing it through Herrera.

Herrera came to the rescue in stoppage time to prevent a fourth as Max Gunderson made a superb run and crossed for Jacob Powell but quick work from the keeper allowed him to make the stop.

2012 US Open Cup Fourth Round: Charlotte Eagles ‘Kings of Texas’ with third road win, edging San Antonio 2-1 in OT

In a Fourth Round showdown of two lower division professional clubs, the USL Pro Charlotte Eagles came away 2-1 overtime victors against the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL, making them, in essence, champions of Texas, having won three consecutive rounds on the road in the Lone Star State. For that triumph, they now face a trip to California.

“We don’t really do anything different any game,” said Charlotte coach Mark Steffens, “We did the same when we took on Dallas, we have good attacking players and that’s what we do.”

Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson was disappointed after the match “we have a job to do and we have to get better at our finishing, you put yourself in a position to win the game again and again but we didn’t put them away.”

The Scorpions got off to a great start and had their first shot on target in the second minute as Hans Dennison set Pablo Campos free only for his shot to be well saved by Clint Irwin in the Eagles goal.

Charlotte were going for it after that initial chance, and they dominated the opening 15 minutes with several chances but could not put them away.

Estaban Bayona made a good run in the 16th minute and was able to find Pablo Campos on the penalty spot but his shot was well saved by Irwin.

In the 28th minute the Eagle’s dominance was finally rewarded as Nate Thornton weaved through the San Antonio defense and unleashed a powerful strike from just inside the penalty area to open the scoring.

Any thoughts of Charlotte sitting back after the opener were quickly put to bed as they continued to dominate the match, earning several corners.

A corner in the 36th minute should have doubled Charlotte’s lead, as the restart from Sean Bateau caused all kinds of problems in the San Antonio area but Daryl Sattler made a great save, despite getting no help from his defense.

The Scorpions countered well and some good work from Hans Dennison put Campos through but the tight did not allow his quality effort to squeeze inside the post, bouncing off the woodwork allowing Charlotte to clear.

In the 40th minute another chance fell to the Scorpions as Estaban Bayona sent in a ball for Dennisen who chose to pass instead of shoot allowing Charlotte to clear. Campos was up to his usual antics in first half stoppage time as his opportunity faded after trying to run at too many men instead of passing the ball.

The Scorpions had a free kick in stoppage time which allowed them to push several men forward and they had four good chances in quick succession but were denied by some good keeping from Irwin. keeping Charlotte 1-0 up at the break.

The Scorpions suffered a big blow at halftime as Hans Dennison was unable to shake off the hamstring injury that has been with him for several weeks.

The Scorpions started the second half the better side showing a big improvement on the first half effort, but again struggled to break through. Ramirez impressed in the 47th minute, making a good run but his space was just closed off killing the chance and allowing Charlotte to clear.

The Scorpions defense continued to fail to communicate which again allowed the Eagles chances, and if not for Daryl Sattler the match would have been over much sooner.

A free kick in the 62nd minute nearly caught the Eagles off guard when the goalkeeper came off his line and couldn’t get to it, but the Scorpions weren’t able to put it away.

Scorpions coach Tim Hankinson made a surprise substitution in the 63rd minute, bringing on Javier Saavedra for Walter Ramirez, who was looking dangerous throughout the night. He stunned many with the substitutions again in the 69th minute when he took off striker Estaban Bayona to bring on a defender Fabian Kling despite chasing the game.

The Scorpions had a great chance in the 75th minute when Jonathan Greenfield hit a powerful shot, which was very well saved by Irwin

From the resulting corner San Antonio found a goal. After the Eagles cleared the restart partially, it found Saavedra who sent in a cross that was headed by Campos tamely but Charlotte were unable to clear as it dribbled over the line.

Throughout the final ten minutes Charlotte were looking dangerous on the counter much like they had done in Dallas.

Missed opportunities in extra time came back to haunt the Scorpions as Charlotte countered well and earned a penalty after Ryan Cochrane tried to clear and the ball bobbled up and hit his hand. Mauricio Salles stepped up and hit the game-winning penalty.

For Charlotte it’s going to mean another road game when they take on Chivas USA.

“We are exhausted, but I think playing at the Home Depot will be a big enough boost for the guys,” said Steffens.

Charlotte’s run began with a 1-0 victory against the PDL El Paso Patriots in the Second Round and was highlighted by a stunning 2-0 win against FC Dallas last round. It is an amazing run for the club, considering it had only won on the road twice before. One came a year ago in an intra-state affair against PDL Carolina Dynamo.

The other, oddly, came in 2005 versus the El Paso Patriots. That Second Round win gave the Eagles a Third Round contest against upcoming opponent Chivas USA. Charlotte took the MLS side to the brink, falling 3-2 in overtime in only previous meeting with an MLS club in the tournament prior to last week’s win in Dallas.

2012 US Open Cup Round 3: San Antonio Scorpions PK enough to upset Houston Dynamo

May 30, 2012 by Chris Hockman

The expansion San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL stunned the 2011 MLS Cup runners-up in an incredible night of US Open Cup action when they defeated the Houston Dynamo 1-0 at Heroes Stadium Tuesday night.

The Scorpions came out determined, lining up in an incredibly attack oriented formation, playing 4-3-3, looking to get at the Dynamo from the start.

That attacking philosophy, though, would not pay off until early in the second half. The Scorpions got the winner in the 50th minute after Kevin Harmse sent a ball over the top for Pablo Campos, who was brought down in the box. The foul gave a penalty to the Scorpions that Hans Dennison converted with a strike into the upper left corner of the net.

Scorpions Coach Tim Hankinson was delighted, saying “If you look at our chances compared to theirs we could have had three goals. We were a little unlucky not to have three goals.”

Houston Dynamo coach Dominic Kinnear, on the other hand, was obviously disappointed after the match. “We were expecting to win, but we knew it wasn’t going to easy.  It’s difficult (to shuffle the line-up) but I thought that was a team that was going to win the game tonight. It’s all about energy and desire to play; and it doesn’t matter what I do, it’s ultimately down to the players.”

The Scorpions will now face USL’s Charlotte Eagles, who defeated FC Dallas with a surprising 2-0 upset at Pizza Hut Park. Tim Hankinson, though, was not taking anything for granted. “I’m sure FC Dallas thought it would be easy, but they’re a very good team.”

Houston had the first chance of the game as they worked through to allow Cam Weaver space, but his shot went straight at Daryl Sattler.

The Scorpions had a great opportunity in the eighth minute as Pablo Campos made space on the left and sent in a beautiful ball that Estaban Bayona couldn’t connect with, allowing Colin Clark to clear for a corner.

Houston got back control after the quarter-hour mark, setting up a number of good set pieces, but without Brad Davis lacked that threat and failed to convert.

Bayona had another good opportunity in the 24th minute as he was able to get away a header from the edge of the area but there wasn’t enough power on the header making it an easy save for Tyler Deric.

Cam Weaver did brilliantly in the 26th minute but his effort to keep the ball in play but his hard work was not rewarded by his team mates.

Estaban Bayona got through one-one-one after an amazing 40 yard run that was very well saved by Deric to deny the opportunity and set up a great counter that saw Alex Dixon shoot from the edge of the area only to see another great save, this time from Sattler, to keep it scoreless at half time.

Five minutes after San Antonio took the lead, Adam Moffatt hit a typically powerful free kick that was well struck but the San Antonio defense stood up and blocked the shot.

Dennison was again put clean through in the 59th minute but again Deric stood up well and denied another one-on-one.

Pablo Campos again got clean through in the 68th minute with some neat footwork but his shot went across the face of goal with no one to tap it in.

In the final 20 minutes the match became much more physical as the fouls flew in preventing the build up at all costs.

Kevin Harmse set up Wes Knight clean through of the defense, but his shot with plenty of time and space but sent his shot just wide.

2012 US Open Cup Second Round: San Antonio Scorpions handily beat Laredo Heat 2-0 in first-ever Open Cup match

May 23, 2012 by Chris Hockman

The San Antonio Scorpions played in their first ever US Open Cup game against the Laredo Heat of the PDL in the Second Round of the 2012 edition, and they won 2-0 to advance to face the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer.

Fielding a surprisingly full strength line up, the Scorpions went for it early, with Pablo Campos nearly capitalizing on a Laredo mistake but his header was much too light. The Scorpions were sloppy early on, far too often giving the ball away in the opening 15 minutes as they struggled to string things together.

In the 21st minute, Walter Ramirez had a good chance from distance after being put in to space by Hans Dennison, but his shot was high and wide. In the 24th minute Laredo had a great chance when Juan Nava was left wide open on the far post but sent it just wide.

In the 25th minute things all went wrong for the Scorpions as Walter Ramirez went in for a header with Carlos Ordaz but ended up getting it all wrong and was shown a straight red card for a heavy body charge. “Everything changes,” said Scorpions defender Wes Knight, “but it’s adversity like that which makes a great team.”

The Scorpions almost got in front in the 28th minute as Campos found space in the box, but his curling shot went narrowly wide. The Scorpions had a good chance in the 43rd minute after some neat team work that played Dennison through on the right, but Emmanuel Frias came out well and claimed the ball, denying the four advancing Scorpions the opportunity. The Scorpions surged in stoppage time and had a great opportunity as Dennison sent in a corner for Ryan Cochrane, who got away a diving header but couldn’t find the target as the half ended scoreless.

The Scorpions were handed a lifeline in the 47th minute when Laredo player Adan Villanueva brought down Pablo Campos when he was clean through, forcing the referee to pull out another red card. Unfortunately for the Scorpions, they were unable to convert the free kick, sailing it over the bar. Kevin Harmse reflected, “I thought hurt them more than it hurt us. We were looking to play a block of eight (four midfielders and four defenders) so we felt comfortable.”

The Scorpions had a penalty shout in the 58th denied but the referee correctly called that it was a 50-50 challenge and awarded a goal kick. On the hour mark, Hans Dennison put Pablo Campos through in the box and Campos squared the ball but was unable to find anyone as the chance went away. In the 65th minute Wes Knight was found on the right and he sent in a wonderful cross in to a crowd that was cleared by Laredo.

In the 67th minute the Scorpions had the lead as Wes Knight sent the ball in again, finding Jonathan Greenfield who sent the ball on for Pablo Campos, who bundled the ball over the line. The Scorpions doubled their lead in the 74th minute when Hans Dennison put Kevin Harmse into space, allowing him to shoot low and hard and send it past Frias.

Laredo went down to nine men in the 77th minute when Juan Nava reacted poorly to a challenge and fought with his defender, earning a second yellow card and then throwing his shoes off and into the ground in frustration. Just one minute later Knight again sent in a wonderful cross, finding Pablo Campos whose header was solid but came off the bar.

Laredo showed little intent late on as the Scorpions eventually cruised to the 2-0 victory despite a nervous first half and will advance to face the Houston Dynamo.

Scorpions head coach Tim Hankinson was not entirely satisfied after the match. “I was disappointed we didn’t come out of the blocks faster and that red card…. there was no intent to play the man, so I thought it was a harsh call… we got lucky that they didn’t take advantage after the red.”

Kevin Harmse thought it was a tough game. “Whenever you have these games you fight hard and then after the red card… which I thought was a bit soft, but we played much better in the second half.” Wes Knight is seeking to get back to MLS in 2013 and was pleased. “Anything that gets you on the radar is great, but when you get there you have to perform.”

The Houston Dynamo will travel to Heroes Stadium in San Antonio for a 7:30pm kick off on Tuesday, May 29.
