The tournament kicks off with a battle of two South Florida teams at Tropical Park in Miami. Red Force FC, who are making their third US Open Cup appearance are loaded with international players (some with professional experience) from Colombia, Nigeria, El Salvador, Brazil, and Peru, just to name a few. After winning five titles in the SSM Premier League, they have now moved on to the American Premier Soccer League (APSL) where they have continued their success. Last year, they reached the championship game of the fall season.
Red Force qualified by shutting out Miami Nacional SC 3-0 in a weather-shortened game, followed by a comeback win over fellow APSL team Uruguay Kendall, the team that eliminated them from last year’s qualifying tournament. Red Force erased a 2-0 deficit with two goals by Alvaro Franco in the final 15 minutes to force extra time. Then, Gilbert Ruiz scored the game-winner in stoppage time to send Red Force to the US Open Cup.
On the other side, the South Florida Surf are making their US Open Cup debut out of the Premier Development League (PDL). The Surf, who are based in Port St. Lucie, Fla., have wasted no time getting adjusted to their new league, as they joined the PDL as an expansion team. In their inaugural season, the Surf finished second in the Southeast Division of the Southern Conference, just one point behind division winner The Villages SC. The club’s 8-2-4 record was enough to earn them a spot in the PDL playoffs, but their postseason run was short-lived, falling 2-1 to the Oklahoma City Energy U23s. They play their home games this year at South Fork High School in Stuart, Fla.
The winner of the game will stay in South Florida to take on Miami FC of the North American Soccer League. If the Red Force win, they will host Miami FC on May 16, but if the Surf are able to pick up their first Open Cup win, it is unknown as to where the game will be played.

Maryland-baesd Christos FC have been a powerhouse in amateur soccer in USASA Region I, the last few years. However, despite all the trophies (most recently, Amateur Cup champions), the one thing that has eluded them has been the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Now, after several years of trying, Christos FC has qualified for the first time. They did that by defeating Open Cup regular Dulles Sportsplex Aegean Hawks in the opening round of the open division qualifying tournament last fall. They clinched their first Open Cup berth with a narrow 1-0 win over West Chester United from the Philadelphia area.
Fredericksburg FC, formerly known as RVA FC (2013-15), has qualified for the tournament for the third time in the last four years. The NPSL side finished as co-conference champions in the Mid-Atlantic Conference with a 6-2-2 record. They tied with fellow Open Cup qualifier Legacy 76. Despite losing to New Jersey Copa in the playoffs by penalty kicks, they had done enough to earn a spot in the tournament. Fredericksburg are still seeking their first Open Cup win. They lost 6-1 to the Richmond Kickers in 2014, and last year, they fell short in a penalty kick shootout with West Chester United.

The Atlanta Silverbacks will look to atone for their 2016 US Open Cup Round 1 defeat away to Reading United AC as they host an SC United Bantams team making its first-ever Open Cup appearances.
The Silverbacks fell one win short of qualifying automatically to the US Open Cup, losing 2-0 to Miami United FC in the Southern Region Semifinals. As such, they had to sweat out the USSF’s decision on how many teams would get in. That is, until Myrtle Beach Mutiny defected to the PDL over the winter, rendering them ineligible and opening up the South Atlantic Division slot.
Of course, that South Atlantic Division no longer exists. With Tobacco Road FC, Myrtle Beach Mutiny, and North Carolina U-23s moving into the PDL, the Silverbacks were absorbed into a much more exciting division that includes Chattanooga FC, Memphis City FC, and Birmingham Hammers (to whom they lost 2-1 to open the NPSL season).
SC United Bantams qualified on a knife-edge for their first-ever US Open Cup after a playoff-qualifying PDL season in 2016. They lost 4-1 to Carolina Dynamo in the PDL playoffs, but the season was enough to edge out division rivals King’s Warriors (WV) by a point. The club sits atop a South Carolina development program.
Bantams will face an even tougher road to qualify for next year’s Open Cup, as NPSL division-winning Myrtle Beach Mutiny join an already competitive South Atlantic Division that includes the Carolina Dynamo, the Charlotte Eagles, and the Wilmington Hammerheads.

Led by captain and goalkeeper Jorge Rosales, El Farolito will not be afraid of anyone they play in the US Open Cup. That’s because the club won the whole tournament in 1993 under the name CD Mexico. They have a long tradition of success in the storied San Francisco Soccer Football League, having played there since 1986, and will be well-prepared to notch an upset or two. This will be the club’s first appearance in the tournament since they lifted the trophy.
Burlingame are led by a goalkeeper of their own – newly-hired head coach and former MLS mainstay Joe Cannon. Founded in 2015, the club are in their third season. They’ve made the US Open Cup every season, and have been knocked out in the first round in their previous two attempts. With a roster stocked full of Bay Area college soccer talent, the Dragons will be hoping their third time in the Cup is the charm.
The winner will get a high-profile regional matchup against the San Francisco Deltas, a NASL expansion team making their cup debut this year.

Morristown, New Jersey’s FC Motown defeated 2016 Open Cup darling Lansdowne Bhoys 3-2 in a US Open Cup qualifying match in October. Lansdowne beat Long Island Rough Riders and professional USL side Pittsburgh Riverhounds before a spirited loss at the storied Rochester Rhinos in 2016. FC Motown is looking to make similar waves with a strong showing in the club’s inaugural US Open Cup appearance and a trip to Rochester looming on the horizon.
FC Motown has developed itself into a statewide powerhouse, cleaning up in the Garden State Soccer League. The team is currently sitting atop the Super Division standings with a perfect 10-0-0 record against the best amateur sides in the state.
New Jersey Copa FC joined the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) ahead of the 2016 season and performed well enough to earn a playoff berth and a qualification slot for the upcoming Open Cup. NJ Copa FC is part of FC Copa Academy’s umbrella club, along with a United Women’s Soccer team and dozens of youth sides.
Former US youth international and professional player Andrew Giallombardo recently joined the coaching staff at NJ Copa FC while former New York Red Bulls homegrown player Sacir Hot has been coaching FC Motown since leaving the professional game as a player.
The two teams know each other quite well as they partnered together during the 2016 NPSL season. A number of FC Motown players formed the core of NJ Copa FC’s squad.
The battle for New Jersey kicks off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10 as New Jersey Copa FC hosts FC Motown with an away date against the Rochester Rhinos (USL) as the prize.

Two perennial Open Cup teams square off in one of the more storied matchups of this year’s First Round, as the Charlotte Eagles (PDL) host Chattanooga FC (NPSL).
The Eagles, once Charlotte’s representative in the USL, have fielded a team since 1993 and have participated in every Open Cup since 2004 except for one (2015, their transition season down to PDL). Meanwhile, Chattanooga FC, thrice the NPSL runner-up, are still the only team from the league to have upset a professional team, taking out the Wilmington Hammerheads in both 2014 and 2015.
Last year was a mild disappointment for the Chattahooligans, as the team “only” advanced to the NPSL semifinals and didn’t even beat the first pro team they came across in the 2016 Open Cup (losing 2-1 at home to Harrisburg City). Regardless, they still beat Reading United in a penalty shootout to get to that Third Round game last year.
Both teams qualified for this year’s tournament relatively comfortably. Chattanooga did on the strength of their semifinal berth in last year’s NPSL tournament while Charlotte won the South Atlantic Division of the PDL over the Carolina Dynamo. The Eagles will be looking for a chance to avenge their 2nd-round loss to the Charlotte Independence last year, as the winner of this game will host the third-year USL team.

One of the more prolific fourth division Open Cup teams in the Carolina Dynamo will host first-timers Viginia Legacy 76 on Wednesday night at MacPherson Stadium in Browns Summit, North Carolina.
Not only have the Dynamo been to the Open Cup 11 times (five times as a pro team, six times as a PDL team), they also have some impressive talent on their alumni roster, including Toronto GK Clint Irwin, New York Red Bulls M Sean Davis, Minnesota United M Sam Cronin, and Chicago Fire D Jonathan Campbell.
They won’t be allowed to field their alumni this season, however, as they look to improve on a 2016 season in which they came in second in the South Atlantic Conference (1st went to the Charlotte Eagles) and narrowly fell to Reading United in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Wednesday will mark the start of their first Open Cup run since 2014, where they fell 3-1 in the 2nd round to the Eagles.
Virginia Legacy 76 were knocked out of the NPSL playoffs one round before automatic Open Cup qualification, losing 1-0 to Clarkstown SC Eagles, but they still qualified comfortably for their first-ever tournament berth after a season that saw them go 6-2-2 in the NPSL Mid-Atlantic Conference.

It will be the battle for South Florida when Miami United plays host to Boca Raton FC. Miami United is looking for its second Open Cup victory, while Boca Raton FC is seeking its first.
The two clubs are located just 45 miles from each other and have played each other once already this season. Boca Raton FC qualified through the open division qualifying tournament out of the American Premier Soccer League (APSL), but this year they also joined the NPSL in the same division as Miami United. On April 30, United hosted Boca Raton and won 1-0.
After two games in the NPSL, Miami United sits on top of the Sunshine Conference at 2-0. Boca Raton’s only NPSL game was that 1-0 loss. In the APSL, Boca is 1-1-1, having earned its first win of the season on May 7.
Miami United qualified for the Open Cup by winning the NPSL Sunshine Conference for the second time. The team’s other Open Cup appearance in 2015 included a win over Southwest Florida Adrenaline in the first round and a loss to the Charleston Battery in Round 2. Boca Raton, which was founded in 2015 and has MLS ambitions, made the 2016 Open Cup but lost 4-1 to the NPSL’s Miami Fusion. The team qualified in 2017 by beating Hurricane FC, 4-1 last October.

Junior Lone Star, a club founded in 2001 by West African immigrants, ends a 16-year Open Cup wait when it takes on tournament veterans Ocean City Nor’easters.
Qualifying as a USASA club, Junior Lone Star is one of several teams that also participates in the NPSL. While NPSL play has not started for Junior Lone Star, the club has already played 10 times this season between friendlies, USASA regional competition and Philadelphia Premier Soccer League (PPSL) contests. The club is 3-0 in the PPSL and has advanced to the final of the USASA Region I Amateur Cup so far this year.
Ocean City Nor’easters have yet to play this season, as its PDL schedule begins on May 19. Founded in 1996, the Nor’easters are no strangers to the Open Cup, appearing in seven tournaments. Only two amateur teams in the country (Michigan Bucks, Des Moines Menace) have more Open Cup wins (8) and pro team upsets (5) in the Modern Era (1995-present) than the Nor’easters. The club’s best run might have been in 2013, when it won two games, including an upset of Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL), before falling on a goal in second half stoppage time to the Philadelphia Union (MLS).
After disappointing PDL seasons in 2014 and 2015, Ocean City returned to the spotlight by making the PDL National Semifinals. The team who emerges out of Wednesday’s game will get a shot at a pro team in the next round as the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL) await the winner.

The Eagles are playing in the Open Cup for the first time since their first appearance last year when Jersey Express (PDL) converted a pair of penalty kicks and held on for a 2-1 win.
Defense was key to Clarkstown’s success a season ago. Led by captain Andreas Chronis and Chris Riordan, it conceded 12 goals in as many games during the regular season. New addition Stephen Roche brings some extra Open Cup experience to the team, captaining Lansdowne Bhoys to the third round of the tournament a year ago.
Reading United has plenty of Open Cup experience playing in its ninth straight tournament, a Modern Era record for an amateur team. The run includes a five match opening round win steak (tied for a Modern Era record) that Reading will be looking to extend.

AFC Ann Arbor, a newcomer from the National Premier Soccer League with the explosive attack will meet the Michigan Bucks (PDL) in the opening round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. According to TheCup.us records, AFC Ann Arbor is the first team from the city, which is home to the University of Michigan, to qualify for the tournament.
On the other side, the Bucks, are without question the best amateur team in the country when it comes to the US Open Cup. No amateur club has more wins (13), pro team upsets (9) and no amateur team has upset not one, but two, Major League Soccer teams (New England Revolution in 2000, Chicago Fire in 2012). The defending PDL champions are making its fifth-straight appearance in the tournament.
This is the first time these two teams meet officially, as they have practiced and scrimmaged each other before.
AFCAA boasts an electrifying trio up top with “El Tridente”: Yuri Farkas, Hector Morales, and Dario Suarez. The Mighty Oak also have a deep midfield with captain Leigh Rumbold, Jake Rufe, and University of Michigan player Tristian Jacob. They have also added year one scoring leader Kyle Breitmeyer and they will have a strong anchor in between the posts with former New England Revolution goalkeeper TJ Tomasso.
The Bucks have lost many star players over the years, and they usually just reload. But they lost a lot of talent from last year’s league championship team such as Russell Ciccerone, Adam Najem, PDL Defender of the Year Lalas Abubakar, Francis De Vries, Ethan Kutler, among others. They had three players selected in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft: Abubakar (5th overall to Columbus Crew SC), De Vries (29th overall to Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Ethan Kutler (39th overall to the New York Red Bulls). However, one thing Bucks fans can usually count on is that general manager Gary Parson and head coach Demir Muftari will find players to replace them.

The GPS Omens will visit Portland, ME to kick off their fourth US Open Cup as they take on the GPS Portland Phoenix at Memorial Stadium. Nearly a year after some Omens players took part in a friendly with Italian Serie A giants, AS Roma, the Boston-based club look to earn their first US Open Cup victory in club history. The amateur side will need to be in good form if they are to upset the Premier Development League (PDL) Northeast Division champions, GPS Portland Phoenix.
GPS Portland Phoenix will look to improve in this year’s edition of the US Open Cup after last year’s disappointing first round lost against AFC Cleveland (NPSL). The pride of Portland, Maine qualified for the tournament this year after winning their division in the PDL.
The GPS Omens qualified through the USASA Bay State Soccer League (BSSL), besting Southie FC in the first qualifying round and Newtown Pride FC in the second qualifying round of the 2017 US Open Cup. After missing qualification last season for the first time since 2013, the “Boys from Boston” will bring experience to the pitch as they look to make a run in the tournament.
The game is a rematch from the opening round of the 2013 US Open Cup when the hometown Portland Phoenix shut out GPS Omens (then known as Mass Premier Soccer) 2-0 on first minute goal and an 89th-minute penalty kick by Pierre Omanga. Wednesday’s game will be on the same field.

Grand Rapids FC (NPSL) will make their Lamar Hunt US Open Cup debut and they will kick off theri inaugural cup run with a road game against a club with a rich history in the tournament.
Chicago FC United may be a new name in the Premier Development League (PDL), but this is the latest name of the long-time PDL affiliate of the Chicago Fire. The name change is a result of the club parting ways with the Major League Soccer (MLS) side. This is the fifth different name the club has featured, starting out as the Chicago Fire Reserves in 2001. During its more than 15-year relationship with the Fire saw numerous Major League Soccer and US National Team players pass through their club.
Chicago has seven US Open Cup wins in team history, fourth-most among amateur clubs in the Modern Era (1995-present). This will mark their sixth appearance in the tournament since their debut in the competition in 2004.
Chicago FC United will begin league play against the Saint Louis Lions on May 23 at Northwestern University, where the club will play all of its home matches. Chicago FC United is coached by Jamie Smith, who had a lengthy professional career playing for Celtic and Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership and the Colorado Rapids in Major League Soccer, among other clubs. Smith also appeared twice for the Scotland national team.
Grand Rapids FC, now in its third season of existence, is entering year two in the NPSL. The Boys in Blue earned a berth in the US Open Cup by placing first in the Great Lakes West Conference in their inaugural season in the NPSL. In 2017 thus far, Grand Rapids has yet to play a match in the NPSL but did defeat Grand Rapids Olé SC 2-1 in its first match of the new season. Key players for GRFC include forward Noble Sullivan, defender Tony Deakin, and goalkeeper Noah Fazekas. Grand Rapids is coached by George Moni.

The Dutch Lions FC (NPSL) will make their Lamar Hunt US Open Cup debut and they will kick off their inaugural cup run as they host the experienced Dallas-based amateur side North Texas Rayados.
The NTX Rayados look to advance in this year’s addition of the cup and rebound after the disappointment of being disqualified the night before the 2016 US Open Cup was set to kick off. They were ousted from the tournament because they withdrew from their local league temporarily, and the rules state that teams must be an active member of a US Soccer-affiliated league to be eligible. The squad from north Texas showed off their cup experience in the qualifying rounds, besting Celtic Cowboys Premier 7-0 in the first round and CD Montagua New Orleans 2-0 in the second round. The Rayados will look to their cup experience as an advantage to upset the first time competitors in Conroe, TX.
The Dutch Lions qualified for this years tournament after placing second in the South Central NPSL conference and winning their regional tournament. Winners of the match will face off against San Antonio FC (USL) in the second round of the tournament in another Texas derby.

Host FC Wichita (NPSL) is making its second appearance in the competition after earning an at-large bid. The team lost at home to the Des Moines Menace last year in its Open Cup debut.
The NPSL side is still taking shape for 2017, with only 10 confirmed players for the upcoming season.
Azteca FC is making its first Open Cup appearance. It earned the right to play FC Wichita with a pair of qualifying wins last fall. They started with a 3-1 win over FC Denver, and clinched an Open Cup berth with a 2-1 victory over Harpo’s FC.
Azteca FC played its way into the qualifying by winning the last Colorado State Cup. The game will be played May 10 at Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita.

With one team making its seventh straight Lamar Hunt US Open Cup appearance and the other set for its second straight, the Des Moines Menace and AFC Cleveland square off Wednesday in West Des Moines, Iowa, at Valley Stadium at 7:30 p.m. in one of the games to watch of the first round.
A win from the hosts will bring USL side FC Cincinnati (USL) to Iowa, while a Cleveland win would set up an intra-state second round game in Cincinnati on May 17.
Des Moines qualified as one of the 10 PDL division winners, receiving an automatic berth in the annual tournament. The Royals, meanwhile, qualified as a playoff team in the 2016 NPSL season and made sure to leave all doubt behind by winning the NPSL championship.
AFC Cleveland was given the short end of the straw again this year on travel. Last year, making its first appearance in the tournament, traveled from Ohio to Maine for its opening-round win against PDL side GPS Portland Phoenix. In the next round, the Royals came to the Midwest before falling 2-0 to Saint Louis FC (USL). The total round-trip mileage amounted to 2,594 by the time Cleveland was home spread over two weeks. This year, the trek to Des Moines is 661 miles one way.
The Menace, heading into its seventh straight season with a US Open Cup appearance, will try to continue its run of opening-round wins. Des Moines has won each of its first-round games since 2012 (if you include the Menace’s USASA side that qualified in 2014). Last year’s third-round appearance in a 2-1 loss to San Antonio was the third time in last four years the Menace made it as far. The other two times came in back-to-back years, starting in 2013 (2-0 loss, Sporting KC). The following year resulted in a 1-0 loss at home to then NASL side Minnesota United.

One of these Sooner State teams will earn its first Lamar Hunt US Open Cup victory on May 10.
National Premier Soccer League side Tulsa Athletic, which is hosting its cross-state counterparts, has lost its only Open Cup game each of the three times it has qualified for the tournament since 2014. That year, the A’s lost 2-0 at home to OKC Energy FC, the senior side of the team they’re facing this year.
The Tulsa team brings plenty of local flavor into the matchup, with 13 players who competed at Oklahoma colleges.
OKC Energy U-23, which competes in the PDL, will make its USOC debut when it travels to Tulsa. The team’s roster includes defender Jacob Van Compernolle, who has played 38 games for USL side OKC Energy FC over the past two years. They qualified by winning the Mid-South Division with a 10-3-1 record, but ultimately fell in the Conference Finals to the Midland/Odessa Sockers, the team that finished second to them in the regular season.
The sides are among a record four Oklahoma teams in this year’s Open Cup field. The game will be May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Tulsa Soccer Complex.

Two sides with a history as developmental programs will face off in Tucson in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
FC Tucson hosts the Colorado Rush on May 10 at Kino North Stadium.
FC Tucson won its opening game in the tournament last year, while Colorado is making its US Open Cup debut.
The PDL side has played two competitive games so far this season, losing to BYU in its opener before recovering to claim a draw in the team’s second matchup. Tate Schmitt scored Tucson’s only goal in the two games on a penalty kick.
Colorado Rush rolled through last fall’s open division qualifying tournament, blanking FC Boulder 3-0 in the opening round. They followed that up by traveling more than 1,000 miles to Portland, Ore. where they defeated International Portland Select 4-0 to clinch a spot in the tournament. before they traveled more than 1,000 miles to Colorado Amateur Soccer League tournament without giving up a goal, earning a spot in the USOC for the first time.
The Rush formed in 1997 when two Littleton youth soccer clubs merged. It currently leads the eight-team Colorado Division of the United Premier Soccer League with a 5-1-2 record.

Two of San Diego’s top clubs will meet in the First Round of the 2017 US Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a chance to advance to the Second Round when Chula Vista FC will visit the Albion SC Pros on Wednesday night. The two sides are meeting for the first time in any competition in 2017, and the stakes and intensity will be high as these crosstown rivals meet on the pitch.
While there is no guarantee as to who fans will see on the pitch for these two San Diego County powerhouses, it seems likely that both the Chula Vista and Albion coaches will concoct strong sides given what is on the line. It will be an opportunity for both clubs to showcase their top teams.
The rhythm of the game will be something to watch as both clubs expect end-to-end action. Chula Vista will aim to set the pace and earn an advantage in Albion’s final third. Albion look to capitalize on the intensity of the match and advance to the next round against fellow-San Diego club.
The match comes at a time where San Diego is at the heart of conversations surrounding Major League Soccer expansion. Back in January, a group of local investors announced their plan to bring MLS to San Diego. Fans should expect a lively match.
“We are looking forward to the game, especially when it is a local derby,” said Hector Diaz, Chula Vista FC’s Director of Coaching. “As we talk about MLS coming to San Diego, this game will be the closest to that atmosphere.”
There should be plenty of local talent on display.
Keep your eyes on Alberto Diaz, who was a nominee for TheCup.Us Lower Division Player of the Tournament in 2015, CalSouth Adult Player of the Year in 2015. Diaz, a longtime member of the Chula Vista side and plenty of experience on the pitch, was named CalSouth Youth Player of the Year in 2011.
On the Albion side look for Tre Hayes to bring flair to the attacking front, having just earned two goals and two assists this past weekend in their NPSL matchup versus City of Angels FC.
“We’re excited. We know it’s a big moment for the club and for the city of San Diego,” said Albion head coach Ziggy Korytoski.

Two California clubs looking for their first win in the US Open Cup will face off in Glendora – and the winner gets the additional prize of hosting a professional side.
FC Golden State Force are making their first US Open Cup appearance in their second season as a club. In their inaugural campaign in 2016 they finished third in the Southwest Conference of the PDL. They feature some interesting young talent, including defensive midfielder Camille Kamdem, most recently of Les Astres FC in Cameroon, and goalkeeper Kevin Silva, who plays at UCLA and has featured for the US Under-19 national team.
They’ll face Outbreak FC, who nearly notched a cup upset in their first appearance last year, taking Seattle Sounders U-23s (PDL) to extra time before eventually falling 3-1. While the team is mostly made up of a group of friends from the Orange County area, they’ve added a few ex-pros, including forwards Spencer Thompson (formerly of Portland Timbers) and Alex Antonescu (OC Blues FC).

La Máquina (UPSL) the Cinderalla story of the 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup look to repeat last year’s success as they take on the Fresno Fuego (PDL) in the first round of the 2017 tournament. Last year, they became just the 12th amateur team to reach the Fourth Round in the competition’s Modern Era. In Round 4, they faced Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy. Although a man up from the 70th minute on, they could only forced the Galaxy into extra time, eventually conceding a controversial goal and exiting the tournament, 4-1.
Currently sitting in 7th place in the UPSL Western Conference, La Maquina have started their league season strong and hope to replicate that success in the tournament.
The Fresno Fuego (PDL) have not qualified for the USOC since 2014, but look to capitalize on their early league success as they enter the 2017 tournament. They opened their season with a 4-0 win over their Southwest division rivals the Burlingame Dragons. A player to watch on is Jose ‘Chiva’ Cuevas who opened with a brace in that victory. The Fuego will hope to recapture the magic of their first cup run in 2003 when they upset three professional teams en route to the Fourth Round before falling to the LA Galaxy.

They finished the 2016 PDL Season third in the Western Conference and after a first round playoff exit hope to start 2017 strong. Garrett Heine, who led the team in scoring in 2016 is the man to watch as they take on the LA Wolves FC in their first round matchup.
The Los Angeles Wolves FC, one of the powerhouses in the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL), led by US Soccer Hall of Famer Eric Wynalda will look to start their 2017 USOC
The Wolves made waves in their US Open Cup debut last year. To qualifying, they began with a 2-1 win over fellow UPSL side Del Rey City, the Wolves defeated Cal FC by the same scoreline to qualify for the tournament. Once they got in, they got a free pass into Round 2 after the Ventura County Fusion (PDL) forfeited. Next, they upset their first professional team by holding the USL’s Orange County Blues to a 1-1 draw after 120 minutes and winning the penalty kick shootout 4-2. Their cup run would end at the hands of 2016’s Open Cup darling La Maquina, another UPSL rival, by the score of 2-0.

OSA FC and Seattle Sounders U-23s are two clubs in the southern suburbs of Seattle, in the shadow of the slightly more popular MLS club from the big city. But both sides will feel well-positioned to go on a cup run of their own.
The NPSL club, OSA FC made their first and most recent cup appearance in 2015, when, under the name of FC Tacoma 253, they fell to Kitsap Pumas in the first round. Now rebranded and moved north, the Italian-influenced club is hoping to build off of last year’s success. They won the Northwest Division of the NPSL last year – albeit a division that was, at the time, made up of just two teams.
Their opponents are making their third US Open Cup appearance. Both times the Sounders U-23s have advanced to the second round before falling. The most recent of these was last year, when they knocked off Outbreak FC before they, too, were beaten by Kitsap Pumas. Defender Matt Reinikka of Davidson College returns to the squad after playing for Charlotte Eagles last year and is expected to lead the team from the back.

The first round Southern California matchup between Moreno Valley FC, an up and coming team in the UPSL and Ventura County Fusion, a perennial US Open Cup qualifier will be an interesting affair.
Last year’s Open Cup saw Ventura County Fusion win in Round 1 over the LA Wolves only to find out the next morning that the Wolves had filed a protest stating that Ventura County Fusion had fielded an ineligible player. LA Wolves eventually won the protest, and the Ventura County Fusion were disqualified from Open Cup play.
They’ll be looking to redeem themselves in the first round of the USOC as they meet Moreno Valley FC, winners of the most recent USASA Region IV championship. Ventura County Fusion are only starting their PDL Season, having played only one game. For the Fusion, this will be the eighth cup participation in a row.
Moreno Valley FC made their way to the first round of this year’s Open Cup by cruising through a pair of qualifiers against fellow UPSL clubs. They blanked Ozzy’s Laguna by a score of 6-0 with the mayor in attendance, Alex Anderson scored a pair of first half goals and it was smooth sailing from there. In the game that ended up being the clincher for the club’s first Open Cup berth, they beat High Desert Rush FC (part of the larger Rush Soccer organization), 5-1. Anderson scored two more and Jadilson Da Silva added a brace on a hot day in Victorville, Calif.
