2008 Second Round: Miami FC edge Silverbacks, earn first win over pro team

With Alex Afonso’s lone strike of the game in the 40th minute, Miami FC advanced past the Second Round of the US Open Cup for the first time with a 1-0 win over the visiting Atlanta Silverbacks.

In a rare switch, Miami FC head coach Zinho decided to rest players in advance of Tuesday’s Open Cup contest, instead of the other way around.

2007 US Open Cup Round 3: FC Dallas reaches Quarterfinals with PK win over Atlanta Silverbacks

FC Dallas needed six rounds of penalty kicks to finish off the USL First Division’s Atlanta Silverbacks at Pizza Hut Park in a Third Round US Open Cup match. The two teams finished regulation tied 1-1 and after 30 minutes of scoreless extra time, the home team moved on to the Quarterfinals with 4-3 shootout win.

2007 Second Round: Saved PK gets Silverbacks past high-flying Charlotte Eagles

The Atlanta Silverbacks, 10-0 winners in their opening round match two weeks ago, were faced with a bigger challenge in their Second Round match. The Silverbacks needed only one goal and a saved penalty kick to overcome the USL-2 leading Charlotte Eagles 1-0.
