FC Tulsa survived a spirited challenge from Little Rock Rangers and pulled away late for a 4-2 win in Round 1 of the US Open Cup on Wednesday night.

In a Little Rock high school football stadium, the Rangers, an amateur side from USL League Two, pushed their professional visitors from the USL Championship deep into the second half before Tulsa finally put the match away.

While FC Tulsa began its USL Championship regular season two weeks ago, the Little Rock team had only trained together for three days before the match as the USL League Two season does not kick off until May.

“Some of the guys are going to come back this summer,” Rangers head coach Francesco Brunetti explained. “Some of our older guys work here in town. Some of them took a shift, 9-5 today, and came to play. And the second goal was scored by one of our academy kids. We had three academy kids playing at the end.”

“I think it means everything to them, right?” Tulsa manager Luke Spencer said of his opponents after the match. “It’s their opportunity, so they’re really excited for it, regardless of the circumstances. And I think that the challenge for us is that it’s an environment that we haven’t been in before. But, all in all, I’m just happy with the result.”

An 85th-minute strike from Little Rock academy player Aiden Turner was one of the highlights of the match as it cut Tulsa’s lead to 3-2. Turner, a high school senior committed to play Division III soccer at Hendrix College next year, recovered a deflected shot in the box and slotted it past the goalkeeper at the near post.

“I saw it go in the net and I was hurrying to get the ball,” Turner said. “I tried not to celebrate too much because we still had a job to do.”

Just seconds after Turner’s goal, Tulsa’s Nelson Pierre rifled a low shot into the net to restore Tulsa’s two-goal lead and seal the victory.

“I think there were a lot of positives to take away,” Spencer said of his Tulsa team. “We wanted to be dangerous in front of goal, create a lot of opportunities and be able to finish them.”

FC Tulsa grabbed the lead early with two first-half goals. Harvey St. Clair finished a Bruno Lapa cross in the 18th minute to open the scoring. In the 31st minute, Tulsa extended its lead through a powerful Jamie Webber volley from outside the box.

Little Rock responded in the 51st minute when Raphael Kistmann turned a Jon Koka cross off the crossbar and into the goal. Tulsa’s Lamar Batista headed home a lofted set piece from Webber in the 71st minute to extend his team’s lead back to two goals. Turner scored in the 85th minute before Pierre answered seconds later to complete the scoring.

Despite the loss, Brunetti believes his team’s Open Cup experience will prepare them for a successful USL League Two season.

“I think this set a standard for all of us,” he said. “If we don’t meet that standard every game, from the coaching staff through to the last guy that we have in the team and the club’s equipment manager, there’s going to be disappointment. I think it’s going to give us a lot of hope, but also a lot of work to do to match the standard every time.”

2025 US Open Cup Round 2: FC Naples scores early, defense shines in shutout of Little Rock Rangers

FC Naples waited until the 91st minute of their First Round US Open Cup match to score the game-winning goal against local rival, Sarasota Paradise. Last night, in front of an energetic home crowd, the USL League One leaders needed less than one minute to put away the game winning goal.

Midfielder Jayden Onen received a ball from Ian Cerro just outside of the visiting Little Rock Rangers’ box. Onen’s speed created the space he needed to score while most of the crowd of 2,174 fans were still settling into their seats.

Head coach of FC Naples, Matt Polland, started a rotated line-up for the Second Round match including giving a start to FC Naples Academy player, Roscoe Rubinstein, at the striker position. The balance of regular starters and reserve players was the right mix to breakdown the USL League Two opponent.

In the 14th minute, FC Naples defender, Brecc Evans, rose above his mark off a corner kick to head the second goal of the game. The goal gave FC Naples some breathing room but Polland said post-game that “After scoring the second goal we kind of went into cruise control for a little while which I wasn’t happy about, but the second half response was excellent. The defensive pressure, the effort was there obviously scoring another goal kind of put the game away.”

The third goal came for the home team came in 77th minute as substitute Andres Ferrin dribbled his way into the box and threaded a right-footed shot past Henry Hampshaw to seal the victory.

“Anytime we can give guys meaningful minutes it’s important,” said Pollard. “It allows for development. It’s a long season and you never know when you’re going to need to call on people so the ability to get more and more players meaningful minutes in these sorts of moments in very important for us for continuation through out the year.”

Little Rock played almost the entire game chasing a goal. Being the visitors, having to travel and face a team from a higher division was always going to be tough, but Little Rock did create problems for Naples.

It was not until the 60th minute when a foursome of FC Naples regulars subbed on that the imbalance between the two sides was truly exposed. In that last 30 minutes the home team constantly created dangerous chances barely letting the opposition out of their own half.

For FC Naples, the solid defensive performance combined with sustained attacking pressure was effective to secure their place in Round 3 in the club’s first appearance in the US Open Cup.

“We are feeling good, we are rolling right now,” said FC Naples defender Gustavo Fernandes. “Our mentality before the game was come out strong, come out with a lot of energy and I think we saw that in the first minute when we were able to get a goal so it was a good showing from us.”

Little Rock Rangers SC pulled off an upset victory against Birmingham Legion FC Wednesday at Episcopal Collegiate School, winning 1-0. The lone goal came from midfielder Caoimhin McConnell in the 48th minute.

The match started slowly, with neither team breaking the opposing back line until the 27th minute, when Little Rock defender Sohma Ichikawa conceded a foul in the penalty box, sending Birmingham’s Lucca Dourado to the spot. However, goalkeeper Tomasz Wroblewski kept the ball out of the net to keep the match level.

From there, both teams traded fouls for the remainder of the half, with the Legion’s Roman Torres and the Rangers’ Daniel Burko each receiving a yellow card as the first half ended 0-0.

The second half began full of action, with McConnell breaking out in the first five minutes to pull the Rangers ahead 1-0. McConnell, a Northern Irishman and senior at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, credits the fans for giving the team energy. “We have the best fans in USL League Two,” McConnell said. “And it showed when we scored that goal. Even though are a few levels higher than where we play, it felt like we were level the whole game, and the fans were a big part of that.”

The Rangers, having established a lead, pulled back defensively for the remainder of the half, allowing the Legion to control possession. The Legion continued to maintain control of the ball throughout the rest of the game, taking 10 shot attempts total for the rest of the second half.

Rangers Head Coach Nicholas Doyle, who played for the Little Rock side last time the US Open Cup was held there, credited their goal to the team’s patient style of play. “We have some weapons out front,” Doyle said. “Our front four can do some real damage if the back six can hold on and give them opportunities. We knew if we defended them and pressed a little, we could hit them on the counter.”

The Rangers would finish the game with five shots on goal to Birmingham’s three, seven shots to Birmingham’s 13, and eight fouls to Birmingham’s ten to finish off the USL Championship side. The Rangers will now be paired off with one of the other 31 winners of the First Round to compete in the Second Round from April 1-2.

2019 US Open Cup Round 1: NTX Rayados’ last second goal leads to PK win over Little Rock Rangers

Mariano Fazio was the hero for NTX Rayados in their penalty shootout victory over the Little Rock Rangers in the First Round of the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday night.

The Argentine defender tapped in a parried shot from teammate Lucio Martinez five minutes into second half stoppage time — essentially the final seconds of the game — to tie the contest at 2-2. He then went on to score the deciding penalty in Rayados’ 4-2 shootout victory.

“We gave everything. We put a good effort together, and, finally, we were able to score,” Fazio said. “It was a good feeling to score and tie the game for us.”

Fazio’s late equalizer came after a 15 minute attacking onslaught from the visiting Rayados team. They often found themselves with ten men in the attacking third with only the goalkeeper standing at the halfway line to clean up any clearances. All hope looked lost in the 88th minute, however, as Rayados went down to 10 men due to a straight red card to Reyes Vargas, a second-half substitute. The visiting team stayed resolute and found their equalizer.

“We just had to make adjustments. That did hurt us,” Rayados player-manager Tito Salas said of the ejection. “The whole time I was on the sideline yelling ‘Let’s keep it positive.’ The boys fed off of it, and it went in. It was a lucky goal, but we’ll take it.”

NTX Rayados logoThe equalizer led to a pair of 15-minute extra time periods in which Rayados kept a tight defensive shape and sought to hold on to the deadlock and head into a penalty shootout. Little Rock had a few good chances, including a 115th minute curling effort from Ryan Blair which went just wide of the post, but ultimately failed to find the winning goal. Rayados goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias Ramirez saved Little Rock’s opening penalty from Trevor Reed, and Robel Dent sent the Rangers’ fourth penalty attempt wide to open up the opportunity for Fazio to win the shootout.

The win advances Rayados to play in the second round of the US Open Cup on Tuesday. This is the third second-round appearance in Rayados’ eight-year history in the tournament. In 2018, the North Texas outfit advanced to the Fourth Round of play before falling to MLS side and eventual cup champions Houston Dynamo by a score of 5-0.

Wednesday night’s competition began amidst a heavy downpour which caused for a wet and muddy playing surface. Rayados began the game on the front foot with an 8th minute goal which was the beginning of a thundering opening half-hour for the visitors. The goal came when Rayados striker Reece Wilson brought down a well-placed cross from right-back Carlos Valdez and slotted a right-footed shot past the keeper and into the bottom-left corner of the goal. The team then forced three acrobatic saves from Rangers’ Spanish goalkeeper Walid Barriou on long-range efforts before the Little Rock outfit shifted momentum with a 27th minute equalizer from Alex Guadron.

The young El Salvadorian forward found the ball amidst a flurry of blocked shots and passes and sent the ball past the Rayados keeper from just outside the box. The goal caused Rangers to settle into the game and find a few chances on goal. In the 40th minute, the Rangers found the back of the net again. This time, Guadron laid a pass off to winger Sabelo Hlongwane who chipped the keeper from outside the penalty box. Sabelo wheeled off in celebration, and his team took a 2-1 lead into the halftime break.

The second half saw an even amount of chances from each side until Rayados began their final push for an equalizer with about 15 minutes remaining in regulation. Despite putting nearly the whole team behind the ball, Little Rock missed a golden opportunity to seal the game when Robel Dent hit the post with a breakaway effort in the first minute of stoppage time. Just four minutes later, Rayados equalized and turned the game on its head.

“Our guys came out and didn’t sit back and watch. They came out and competed,” said Rangers head coach Will Montgomery. “They showed they can compete against a tough team. We were unfortunate that we didn’t get second and third chances in the second half. We had plenty of opportunities to kill the game off, and we just couldn’t do it.”

Despite the loss and stormy weather, it was still a special night in Little Rock for the Rangers. It was the first opportunity for the NPSL side to compete in the US Open Cup, and it was the first time in the 106-year history of the competition that an Arkansas-based team participated in the tournament.

“It is a tremendous honor to be able to coach the first team in the US Open Cup from Arkansas. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go on to the second round, but overall I am very honored to be coaching this team and to be able to say we achieved something and now we get to look forward to getting back here again.”
