Despite fresh faces in the starting XI and fatigue from travel, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds did just enough. In the Arch City, Pittsburgh scored early to defeat Columbus Crew 2, 1-0, in the Third Round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup at Lower.com Field on Tuesday.

A curling corner kick from Jorge Garcia took a deflection before being flicked towards the net by Pittsburgh captain Danny Griffin. Columbus goalkeeper Luke Pruter was unable to secure the loose ball, giving the Riverhounds a lead in the 28th minute representing the only score of the match.

Griffin said that the direction of Garcia’s corner allowed him to put the ball out of reach of Pruter.

“I know that Jorge can play crosses with either foot so obviously he was going to go with an in-swinging ball. He can go either left or right no matter what side he is on,” Griffin said. “I knew that he was going to whip one hard. My job was just to get in front of the man and once I saw it hard and low I knew I just had to redirect it. I was fortunate to get it into the corner where it was harder for the keeper to save.”

Griffin’s goal served as the game winner as the Hounds backed up his effort with stout defense. They did not concede a single Columbus shot during the first half of play, much to the relief of goalkeeper Jacob Randolph in his season debut. Randolph made three crucial saves in the second half to maintain Pittsburgh’s advantage.

The netminder was grateful to earn his first career win with the Riverhounds.

“It’s huge. Last year I played in a few games and got my first career shutout. This is my second one but more importantly it is my first win,” Randolph said. “I take great pride in that. Especially in such a historic competition like the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.”

The rotated Pittsburgh squad earned just the fifth road victory in the club’s 21 Cup appearances. Tuesday’s match was the second of four consecutive road fixtures.

With the victory, Riverhounds head coach Bob Lilley earned his 23rd career US Open Cup win as a coach. He now moves into a tie for fifth place on the Modern Era’s coaching wins table with Adrian Heath. Lilley said the extended road trip is already a challenge for his team.

“We had to be selective when we pressed with some guys. We would not have been able to make it with our five subs for even 90 minutes if we did not manage this game for some players,” said Lilley. “We had a balance of some experienced players today that also played in Charleston. It is a bit of a sacrifice because now we have to wonder how much they will have in their legs for Saturday in Loudon (Virginia), who is in first place.

“The league is very important to us as well. It is difficult how they schedule these weeks. It would be easier if we had a couple of home games but when they are all on the road, it is a challenge.”

Pittsburgh endured a major blow late in the second half as Midfielder Junior Etou suffered an injury and was substituted off the pitch in stoppage time.

Lilley said that the club did not have an official update yet but initial evaluations were not positive.

“It does not look good. I think he is probably going to be out for a while,” Lilley said.

The Pittsburgh victory ends Columbus’ first venture into the 111-year-old tournament. The Capybarras finish the tournament 2-1-0 while Pittsburgh improved its all-time Cup record to 18-18-3.

Tuesday’s fixture was not the first time the Riverhounds have eliminated a Columbus team from the tournament. Pittsburgh hosted Columbus’ First Team in 2023, defeating them by the same scoreline of 1-0.

Pittsburgh awaits their Round of 32 opponent which will be decided via draw on Thursday as all 16 MLS sides will enter the tournament. The Round of 32 will take place May 6-7.

2025 US Open Cup Round 2: Young stars propel Columbus Crew 2 past Lexington SC

Goals from three Columbus Crew 2 players, all under the age of 20 sent Lexington SC crashing out of the the Second Round of the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a 3-0 win. Midfielder Owen Presthus, and forwards Christian Ortiz and Brent Adu-Gyamfi each tallied goals for the Capybaras to advance to the Third Round.

It was a back and forth game from the opening kick, with both teams turning each other over high up the pitch. It only took Presthus seven minutes to open the scoring for the Capybaras. Presthus connected with 16-year-old phenom Chase Adams on a low cross to dispatch a deflected shot into the far corner.

Presthus said he knew the importance of the US Open Cup because his father – Tom Presthus, who won the 2002 US Open Cup with the Columbus Crew – keeps his ring in his office.

“I saw he has an Open Cup ring from 2002 and he has it in our office,” Presthus said. “It’s just a constant reminder of what this tournament is. It’s the most historic soccer competition in America.”

Lexington got its footing back quickly though, controlling possession and creating chances for a majority of the next 20 minutes. Midfielder Michael Adedokun grazed Crew 2’s woodwork on a first time shot from the center of the box in the 23rd minute, inches away from levelling the match.

Crew 2 pushed back, attempting to hit Lexington on the counter but the visitors thwarted any of the Capys attempts to bear down on goalkeeper Brooks Thompson. Lexington had a few opportunities off of corners, but could not seriously threaten goalkeeper Luke Pruter.

After a minute of added time in the first half, both teams headed to the locker room with just a goal separating them. Despite the scoreline, much of the first half was spent inside Crew 2’s defensive half.

The second half started off well for Columbus. Crew 2 controlled possession and had two shouts for a penalty — one for a handball and the other for taking down Ortiz in the box — that were not given by the officials.

Although the penalty cries fell upon deaf ears, the Capys continued to play with renewed energy. Lexington struggled to get out of its own half despite making multiple substitutions at halftime.

The visitors’ luck changed in the 56th minute when a corner was awarded off a deflected pass. A short corner and quick cross flew into a sea of bodies in the box, sending the ball careening off the bottom side of the crossbar. Pruter quickly secured the ball before it bounced over the line, allowing Crew 2 to survive another near-miss by Lexington.

A mere minute later, Pruter was called into action again. The 23-year-old used every inch of his wingspan to get a touch on a deflected shot and tip the ball over the bar to save the Capys again.

Lexington’s onslaught on the Crew 2 goal continued, but the hosts punched back in the 65th minute. A bad pass in the back of Lexington’s defense was picked off by Ortiz, who outpaced the defense and slotted a low right-footed shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Seven minutes later Ortiz was bearing down on goal again. A quick slip pass caught the Lexington defense napping and the 17-year-old was one-on-one with Thompson. Ortiz attempted to nutmeg the goalkeeper, but Thompson remained big and got a touch on the ball to send it wide.

Lexington threw more bodies forward and Columbus sat in a 5-4-1, with Pruter standing on his head to keep the visitors out. Crew 2 took advantage of Lexington chasing the game in the 95th minute, with Adu-Gyamfi lacing a right-footed shot across the goalkeeper into the bottom corner to push Columbus’ lead to three goals.

After 90 minutes and six minutes of stoppage time, Crew 2 came away with a 3-0 win over Lexington to move on.

Crew 2 assistant coach Josh Williams was proud of his team competing in a high-level cup competition, but does not want this to be his squad’s last win in it.

“I feel like the Open Cup just does something,” Williams said. “It was fun tonight to kind of play the underdog role. We’re going to show up, whether we’re home or away. It doesn’t matter the stadium, we are going to show up compete. We fear no one and anything can happen, and I feel like we showed that tonight.

Columbus moves onto the Third Round of the Open Cup, which will take place on April 15-16.

The 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup kicked off Wednesday night for Columbus Crew 2, as they made their inaugural appearance in the prestigious tournament for the first time as they hosted New York Renegades FC. Led by former Columbus Crew captain Federico Higuain, the Capybaras – which the team was dubbed in 2023 – helped Higuain advance to the next round of the U.S. Open Cup for the first time in his career, defeating the Renegades 4-1.

Columbus dominated the possession battle, holding 75% to the Renegades 25% while having 14 shot attempts (12 on target).

Crew 2 got the scoring started late in the first half  with Keesean Ferdinand getting on the end of a ball inside of the penalty area, heading it into the back of the net. Brent Adu-Gyamfi then doubled the Crew’s lead late in first half stoppage time with his left-footed shot just before the half.

The second half mirrored the first, with Columbus on the front foot, forcing the Renegades to tire again.

Tristan Brown got his first of the night in the 62nd minute before Adu-Gyamfi secured his brace in the 69th minute.

Jonathan Silveira scored the lone goal for the Renegades in the 80th minute with a left-footed shot from outside of the 18-yard box and into the net at the far post, but it couldn’t propel the Renegades to pull another back before the final whistle.

Not only was this win the first for the Capybaras in the Open Cup, but it was also the first time that head coach Federico Higuain advanced in the tournament in his career.

Columbus Crew 2 is back in action Sunday March 23, as they travel to take on Inter Miami CF II.
