2009 Second Round: City Islanders advance after dramatic PK shootout with Western Mass Pioneers

The Harrisburg City Islanders earned a rematch with the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer by defeating the Western Mass Pioneers on penalty kicks after as 0-0 draw.

Both teams played to a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of normal time and 30 minutes of extra time. Western Mass held on for the scoreless draw despite being out shot 15-6 over the 120 minutes. Both teams had good scoring chances denied by the woodwork in the extra session. The Pioneers Federico Molinari and Yan Klukowsk each struck the left post, and Harrisburg’s Brandon Swartzendruber’s shot went off the crossbar late in extra time.

After both teams converted their first penalty attempt, Weston Mass goalkeeper James Thorpe saved attempts from Nate Baker and Tim Velten. This only kept the count even at 1-1, as Klukowski and Almir Barbosa of the Pioneers both missed their attempts. After both teams were good with their next two kicks, the tiebreaker moved to sudden death. Swartzendruber made good on his kick for the City Isles, while David Tyrie sent his kick wide right, sending Harrisburg and goalkeeper Chase Harrison to the Third Round. Harrison finished with three saves while Thorpe stopped six shots.

Harrisburg faced New England in the 2007 US Open Cup Quarterfinals at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Mass., and fell 2-1. The rematch will be at New Britain, Conn. on June 30, with the winner advancing to the round of eight.

The Harrisburg City Islanders made easy work out of their nearby PDL opponents, the Reading Rage, cruising to a 4-1 victory. The win puts the City Islanders into the Second Round for the third time in their brief three-year history.

It was the first Open Cup appearance for the Rage since 2003 when they were a professional team in the USL’s Pro Soccer League. Reading was looking for their first Open Cup win, having lost their opening game in their two previous appearances (2001, 2003).

The USL-2 club got on the board right away when Chad Severs assisted on Steve Fisher’s opening minute goal. Reading responded seven minutes later when Jon Ports netted an unassisted tally.

Ty Shipalane put the City Islanders in front for good just three minutes from halftime, off a pass from Cody Reinberg. Harrisburg padded their advantage in the second half, with goals from Nicki Paterson and a penalty kick by Severs.

Harrisburg will now host fellow USL-2 club Western Mass Pioneers in the Second Round on June 16.

2007 Second Round: Rhinos need OT to win physical battle with Western Mass

Despite out shooting the Pioneers 40-3, the Rochester Raging Rhinos needed a late goal and extra time to defeat the Western Mass Pioneers, 2-1 at PAETEC Park in Rochester.

The Rhinos came out firing in the first half, taking 13 shots, only to come away with nothing. Their best shot at the lead was in the 16th minute, when Chris Aloisi made a run down the right side and crossed to Hamed Diallo, who was stopped by Pioneers ’keeper Kevin Trapp. The ball rebounded to the feet of Matthew Delicate, who was also stopped despite being inside the six-yard box. Despite all of the shots Rochester took, It was Western Mass who snatched the lead just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Jeff Deren managed to sneak behind two Rhino defenders and a charging GK Chase Harrison, and managed to get a touch on the ball and send it trickling into the net.

In the second half, the Pioneers were all defense, intent on holding onto the 1-0 lead for the win. Rochester added another 18 shots, and finally broke through in the 83rd minute on a Matthew Delicate goal. Delicate received a pass from Aaran Lines, and promptly put the ball away to tie the game. Western Mass resorted to even more physical play in the final minutes of regular time, and could be considered lucky to finish with 11 men on the field.

The Rhinos got the game-winning goal at the end of the first period of extra time. This time is was Lines himself providing the tally, and Rey Angel Martinez nearly put the USL-1 side up 3-1 when his chip shot over GK Trapp struck the crossbar. The teams finished the physical affair with 52 fouls and nine yellow cards between them.

2007 First Round: Rhinos make early goal stand up, beat Rough Riders 1-0

The Rhinos needed only one goal to defeat the PDL Long Island Rough Riders, and advance to the Second Round of the US Open Cup. For Long Island, it was their first appearance in the tournament since they moved down to the PDL from the Second Division.

Matthew Delicâte’s goal came in the 20th minute, heading in a cross from Stephen Shirley-Black.

The Rough Riders had two good opportunities to tie the game in the first half. A corner kick sent into the penalty area was headed on goal where Rhinos goalkeeper Chase Harrison was nowhere to be found, but midfielder Danny Kramer was there to save the day, at least momentarily. Just seconds later, Harrison made a point blank save from the left side of the 18 yard box which was one of his many great saves in the game. In the 40th minute, Harrison shined yet again. Rough Rider forward Mike Palacio launched a strong left foot from about 25 yards out but Harrison dove to his left to punch it away. One minute later, Palacio had another opportunity from 20 yards out, but Harrison was there again to keep it a 1-0 game.

While Matthew ’s goal in the 20th minute was enough for Rochester, it was Long Island goalkeeper Tim Melia vs. Johnny Menyongar in the second half. In the 64th minute, Melia stopped a 20 yard attempt from Menyongar off a touch pass from Delicâte. Three minutes later, the Rough Riders ’keeper dove to his left to stop a one-timer shot from the Liberian striker, leaving Menyongar in disbelief. Menyongar struck again three times in three minutes. In the 83rd, Melia got in the way of a 20-yeard shot, in the 84th, Menyongar’s shot went wide, and in the 85th, Menyongar thought he finally beat his nemesis. Before he could celebrate, however, the linesman raised his flag to signal offside.

The loss extends Long Island’s Open Cup losing streak to four games, including games from their first tournament appearance in 1997 as a member of the A-League (losing 1-0 in extra time to the Metrostars), and as a Second Division team in the 2003 and 2005 competitions when they lost to the Mid-Michigan Bucks (PDL) and the Ocean City Barons (PDL).

Rochester returns to PAETEC Park on June 26 to host the Western Mass Pioneers in the Second Round.
