Austin FC made history Wednesday night, reaching the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Quarterfinals for the first time after a 3–1 win over in-state rivals Houston Dynamo FC at a roaring Q2 Stadium. Under coach Nico Estévez, Austin controlled most of the game and fed off the crowd’s energy, full of chants and excitement.

The breakthrough came in the 29th minute when Brandon Vázquez finished off a perfect cross from Jon Gallagher with a clever flick and a powerful shot to the far post. That goal marked Vázquez’s fifth in five matches and his third of this year’s Open Cup, which ties him for the tournament lead.    .

After the match, Vázquez said, “Yeah, incredible — another ball in the net. Winning is what matters most. We’re happy and motivated. The group knows what we can do, and even when things aren’t perfect, our quality shows. If we keep this up, I think we’ll do well.”

Gallagher added insight on the team’s success: “Sticking to the game plan from the first minute and having the right mentality helped us. Being more direct and playing in strings worked well, especially with Brandon up front and Bukari creating one-on-one chances, even if not every pass paid off. We got good territory and controlled the game.”

Captain Ilie Sánchez notched his first goal for Austin off a low cross from Osman Bukari just after halftime. Sánchez told the media, “We take Open Cup games exactly as they are—playoffs. You win, you advance. You lose, you’re out.”

Bukari earned man of the match honors, scoring a penalty at 56-minute mark and assisting Sánchez’s goal shortly after. Despite recent criticism and rumors about his future with Austin FC, Bukari said he was unaware of the chatter and proved his value tonight with a strong performance.

The match was physical, with nine fouls called in the first 40 minutes. Houston held 59% possession in the first half and took seven shots but failed to test Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver with a shot on target.

Houston pulled one back in the 70th minute through Ezequiel Ponce, assisted by Franco Escobar, but Austin held firm.

The closing minutes grew intense as Houston pushed forward, putting Austin’s defense under pressure. In the 91st minute, Houston’s Brooklyn Raines received a second yellow card and was sent off. Just two minutes later, Austin’s Julio Cascante was shown a straight red card for a controversial challenge that stirred reactions from the crowd and sidelines. Cascante will now miss the club’s Quarterfinal match in July on the road against the San Jose Earthquakes.

2025 US Open Cup Round 4: Austin FC’s Brandon Vazquez makes fans “believe” with comeback vs. El Paso

Austin FC avoided an early exit from the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, overcoming a two-goal halftime deficit to defeat USL Championship side El Paso Locomotive, 3-2, at Q2 Stadium.

El Paso shocked the home crowd in the first half behind a pair of goals from a familiar name in Austin soccer circles. Beto Avila, who previously played for the now-defunct Austin Bold in the USL Championship, silenced Q2 Stadium with a pair of goals.

Less than a minute after having a goal called offside, Avila received a pass from Amando Moreno on the left wing. Avila took a couple of touches, gained the penalty box and fired a low shot which beat Austin goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland to the near post in the 20th minute.

Austin FC continued to put pressure on the El Paso goal. Moments after forcing a point blank save from El Paso goalkeeper Jamali Waite, Austin’s Brandon Vasquez put his head to a cross just outside the six-yard box. His header rang off the crossbar in the 32nd minute.

A minute later, El Paso sprang to live on the other end, forcing a diving save by Cleveland on a shot from about 30 yards out. Then shortly after that, in the 34th minute, Avila received a cross but his touch got away from him, only to have the ball deflect off a defender. Avila chased it down in the box and launched a shot to the far post.

The frustration among the Austin supporters was clear as loud boos rang out at halftime with the hosts trailing 2-0.

“What happened here in halftime was we had a real hard, honest talk amongst ourselves and some words were said,” said midfielder Jon Gallagher. “But I think we were addressing the facts and not caring about the guys’ feelings—we’ve got to do our jobs here, and that’s what we’re supposed to do.”

Despite the deficit, Austin created several chances—particularly through forward Brandon Vázquez, who was active throughout the first half but couldn’t find the breakthrough. As the saying goes, la red no quería ceder—the ball simply didn’t want to go in.

That changed in the 73rd minute when Vázquez finally got on the scoresheet. There was no celebration, just urgency and a sense of unfinished business. Owen Wolff, who had just entered the game, played Vazquez through to the box and the US international one-timed the ball to cut the lead in half.

“It felt like the goal just wouldn’t come. We were putting in all the work, and finally, I hit the back of the net,” said Vázquez. “It was an incredible feeling—and to come back, score, and win the game made it even better.”

Austin had flipped the momentum. Three minutes later, Vazquez played provider. With his back to the goal, Vazquez chested a ball down to Myrto Uzuni, who settled the ball at the edge of the 18-yard-box and fired a shot to beat a diving Waite, sending Q2 into a roar.

Vázquez added his second of the night in the 80th minute, when Wolff dribbled into the El Paso penalty area and just as he reached the box, he sent a low cross to Vazquez who powered a header into the back of the net. He sprinted to the supporters’ section with a scream of “Believe!” as Austin completed the comeback.

Vasquez’s brace gives him 11 career US Open Cup goals, which moves him into a tie for 7th with Dom Dwyer on the Modern Era (1995-present) goalscoring chart. His goal was his fourth game-winning goal in his Open Cup career, which is tied for second most of any player.

El Paso exit the tournament after a courageous first-half performance, but Austin FC’s second-half response—powered by key substitutions and relentless pressure—proved too much to contain. Austin FC will now face in-state MLS rival Houston Dynamo in the Round of 16, with that match also set to be played at Q2 Stadium.

Austin FC II, reigning champions of MLS NEXT Pro, embarked on their eagerly awaited journey in the esteemed soccer competition with a sold-out spectacle of 1,300 fans at their revered home ground, The Pitch at Parmer Lane. The vibrant atmosphere, fueled by a passionate fanbase filling the stands, set the stage for an enthralling clash as Austin FC II faced off against their rivals for the opening round, FORO SC.

However, it was the amateur side from the Dallas area who would play spoiler, with super sub Kyle Bennett scoring an equalizer in stoppage time of the second extra time period to force penalty kicks. Bennett would then score the deciding goal in the shootout as the UPSL side pulled off the upset, 4-3.

“We knew it would be a very tough game against a very strong opponent and we handled the pressure well,” said FORO SC head coach Michel Garbini. “They probably had a bit more of the possession and we tried to be very organized and minimize chances and for moments we felt we were the danger team on the field and players followed the plan and the result didn’t surprise us.”

FORO SC presented a formidable challenge for the defending champions.

The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as the referee’s whistle heralded the commencement of the match. It didn’t take long for the action to ignite, with Micah Burton of Austin FC II showcasing his prowess and making an early impact, sending waves of excitement through the crowd just five minutes into the encounter. However, FORO SC’s No. 10, Moiad Ankir, swiftly retaliated with a menacing shot in the 21st minute, only to be denied by a spectacular save from Austin goalkeeper, Marcus Alstrup, much to the relief of the home supporters.

Despite FORO SC’s spirited resistance, Austin FC II continued to assert their dominance, with Jonathan Santillan spearheading relentless assaults on the visitor’s defense, keeping them on their toes between the 2nd and 22nd minute mark. However, despite their relentless pressure, the breakthrough remained elusive, with both sides locked in a tense battle for supremacy.

As the first half progressed, the pendulum of momentum swung back and forth, with Micah Burton coming agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock for Austin in the 37th minute, only to be thwarted by the resilient defense of FORO SC. However, just when it seemed like the halftime whistle would sound with the deadlock intact, FORO SC seized a golden opportunity in the 38th minute, with Johnathan Rey Sauceda capitalizing on an aerial delivery from Daniel Escorcia to put the visitors ahead, sending shockwaves through the home crowd.

Undeterred by the setback, Austin FC II launched a spirited counteroffensive, with Bryant Farkalarfun coming close to leveling the score in the dying embers of the first half. As the halftime whistle blew, the home team found themselves trailing by a solitary goal, prompting Coach Brett Uttley to rally his troops for a spirited fightback in the second half.

The resumption of play saw Austin FC II emerge with renewed determination, as CJ Fodrey orchestrated a scintillating attacking move that nearly resulted in an equalizer for the hosts in the 48th minute. Despite their relentless onslaught, Austin found themselves frustrated by FORO SC’s resolute defense, with the second half witnessing a flurry of attempts from the home side within the opening minutes.

However, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 52nd minute, as Bryan Arellano’s precision free-kick caused chaos in the FORO SC defense, ultimately leading to a confusing goal credited to Santillan, much to the jubilation of the home faithful, as Austin FC II restored parity.

With the scoreline level, both teams threw caution to the wind in pursuit of a decisive goal, with Austin FC II dictating proceedings and carving out numerous opportunities. Yet, despite their valiant efforts, neither side could find the elusive winner within regular time, setting the stage for a captivating extra-time spectacle.

As the game entered the additional period, fatigue began to set in, but both teams exhibited remarkable resilience, refusing to wilt under pressure. With tensions reaching fever pitch and the prospect of penalties looming large, every moment became fraught with significance.

“We made a change to take a risk and change the formation which put us a little bit more aggressive forward and taking risks in the back but the players responded really well to the pressure and kept each other accountable,” said Garbini. “On the last play of the game we got what we deserved and after all the fight and persistence, we felt very proud of each other.”

In the nerve-wracking penalty shootout that ensued, Austin’s Fodrey and Alonso Ramirez displayed nerves of steel, converting their spot-kicks with aplomb. However, a miss from Sal Mazaferro provided FORO SC with a lifeline, which they duly capitalized on to emerge victorious, stunning the home crowd and punching their ticket to the next round of the competition.

“We are excited and looking forward for the next game and we all know that the preparation will need to be better than we did because we probably will play a tougher opponent,” said Garbini. “But no matter what happens, I’m very proud of those boys and we want to expose them to these professional teams. I think there’s a lot of talent on this team and they have the tools to play at the pro level.”

Despite the heartbreak of defeat, Austin FC II and their loyal supporters showcased commendable sportsmanship, acknowledging the valiant efforts of their team. Coach Brett Uttley graciously praised the performance of FORO SC and expressed his best wishes for their future endeavors in the tournament, “they competed incredible and you know wish them all the best in the next round” said Uttley.
