2010 US Open Cup First Round: City Islanders need OT to knock off Brooklyn Italians

June 18, 2010 by Josh Hakala

The Brooklyn Italians lead twice, but J.T Noone’s goal in the 89th minute propeled the match into extra time, where the Harrisburg City Islanders would score two goals and notch a 4-2 victory in the first round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Brooklyn opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Marco Hamilton lobbed Islanders goalkeeper Tomer Chencinski from midfield to put the Italians in front 1-0.

The lead did not last long as Islanders’ Midfielder Nate Jafta scored on a breakaway on 19 minutes to knot the score at 1-1.

The second half saw Brooklyn jump out to a 2-1 lead thanks to a goal from Paul Nittoli in the 65th minute as he placed his shot to the right side of the goal past Islander’s keeper Chencinski.

It seemed as the Italians were going to knotch the first upset of 2010, but Geoff Bloes tally off a J.T. Noone assist in the 89th minute tied the game at 2-2 and took the match into extra time.

Soon after the first whistle J.T Noone struck in the 92nd minute with a superb goal to put the Islanders up 3-2 and giving them the lead for the first time in the match.

In the 119th minute former NPSL player Dominic Oppong put the game out of reach with his goal to finish the match 4-2 in favor of Harrisburg.

Harrisburg will now move on to host Long Island Rough Riders June 22 at Skyline Sports Complex with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. EST.
