The Charleston Battery welcomed some familiar names to Blackbaud Stadium, but sent the former pros of CASL Elite back to Raleigh, NC with a 4-2 defeat.
The Battery opened the scoring quick on a 7th minute goal from Brandon Massie, loff a pass from Levi Coleman. Coleman then added a goal of his own five minutes later after capitalizing on an errant back bass to CASL goalkeeper Matt Waldrop. Charleston took a 3-0 lead into the half when Zach Prince knocked in a low shot off a pass from Josh Bolton.
CASL finally got on the board in the 53rd minute when former Miami FC midfieder Tim Merritt scored from twenty yards out. Merritt nearly added another a few minutes later, but was unable to control Dustin Swinehart’s cross. Charleston pushed their lead back to three goals when substitute Tom Heinemann scored just eight minutes after entering the game. Former Charlotte Eagle Swinehart netted a consolation goal for CASL in the 80th minute, but it was all too little too late for the USASA club.
