The Sonoma County Sol continued their run in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with a convincing 5-2 win against the Orange County Blue Star of the PDL. Two goals from Shawn Percell and a four goals in five minutes melee highlighted the match. The Sol continue their 13-match unbeaten streak (11-0-2) in all competitions, as they prepare for a showdown against Portland Timbers of USL-1 in the Second Round.
When the initial draw was made, it seemed like an outstanding match, but after Orange County clinched a spot in the tournament with four shutout wins, they struggled. Since that hot start, they went on a five-game winless streak and were outscored 13-4 during that span.
The Sol did not waste any time, with Trevor Hurst providing the game’s first goal in the 5th minute. The Blue Star were unable to find an answer to Hearst’s early goal and the score remained 1-0 at the half.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Sol were given a 2-0 lead on the foot of Shawn Percell. Another Shawn Percell tally in the 76th minute propelled the Sol to a 3-0 lead.
The game would get interesting starting in the 82nd minute with a tally from Eric Lafon putting the Sol up 4-0. Less than a minute after, Orange County Blue Star found their way onto the scoreboard, making it 4-1 in the 83rd minute thanks to Kevin Stoll. Again, one minute later, Eric Larson answered for Sonoma County, pushing the score to 5-1. The Blue Star then answered back in the 84th minute, making it 5-2, concluding four goals in less than five minutes between the two clubs.
Next up for the Sonoma County Sol are the Portland Timbers of USL-1, who defeated Kitsap Pumas 3-0 to earn their place in the Second Round. The Sol will host the USL-1 club at Santa Rosa High School on Tuesday June 16th at 7:00pm.
