Valley 559 FC traveled nearly 900 miles for one more shot at US Open Cup history, and on a windy Saturday night at Interbay Stadium, the Fresno side finally claimed it. A late, curling free kick from Ernesto Espinoza carried Valley to a 1-0 win over Ballard FC and into the 2026 tournament for the first time.

Espinoza delivered the breakthrough in the 87th minute after Josh Zambrano was tripped just outside the penalty area. The left-footed strike skipped toward the lower-left corner, beating Ballard goalkeeper Lars Helleren’s outstretched hand and settling the tense match.

Ballard, coming off a 5-1 qualifying win a round earlier led by former MLS player Lamar Neagle, surged forward in response. Seven minutes of stoppage time stretched to twelve as the home side threw numbers ahead, but Valley’s back line held shape and cleared danger after danger to preserve the result.

The match had opened with flowing play and heavy challenges. Valley tested Ballard early through Espinoza, whose 18th-minute shot grazed the post before another easy save for Helleren at the half-hour mark. Ballard briefly believed it had an opener in the 31st minute when Nii Engmann tucked in a loose ball inside the 6-yard box. A deflection, however, had pushed him offside, wiping away the celebration.

Ballard came out of halftime pressing relentlessly, forcing Valley into hurried clearances, contested goal kicks and tense moments in their defensive third. The hosts nearly paid for their aggression in the 77th minute when Quincy Amarikwa broke free behind the back line but the former MLS player pushed his 1-on-1 attempt wide.

That miss proved costly, and Valley made the most of its late opportunity.

“They have pace,” Valley head coach and former pro Milton Blanco said. “Usually we send a lot of numbers forward, but we knew with them we had to be careful. We didn’t want to stop playing our game, but we needed to protect ourselves in the back.”

Valley 559 FC Defender Mason Gonzalez said the team leaned on its identity.

“If we don’t give up a goal, we have the attacking talent to find one eventually,” he said. “When we were trying to see the game out, I had complete confidence we weren’t going to concede. That’s a real strength of ours.”

After two straight years of falling short in qualifying, Valley 559 FC finally broke through, earning a long-awaited place in the 2026 Open Cup. The club now turns its attention back to UPSL NorCal South play while awaiting its first-round draw.
