Reading United (PDL) 1:2 (AET) Rochester Rhinos (USL Pro)
Colin Rolfe of the Rochester Rhinos scored the game-winning goal in the 119th minute to give the Rochester Rhinos a 2-1 win over Reading United AC in the opening game of the Third Round, keeping intact its perfect record in the Open Cup against amateur teams. Rochester equalized seconds after Reading opened the scoring in the 66th minute. The Rhinos will host defending Open Cup champion DC United in Round 4. MATCH REPORT [+]
Harrisburg City Islanders (USL Pro) 4:2 Baltimore Bohemians (PDL)
Morgan Langley and Jimmy McLaughlin each scored a brace, and the City Islanders held off a pesky Baltimore team to win 4-2 and earn a date with the Philadelphia Union in the Fourth Round. Langley scored eight minutes in, and McLaughlin added two more to give Harrisburg a 3-0 halftime lead. Harrisburg improved to 10-1 against amateur teams, while Baltimore suffered its first Open Cup loss. MATCH REPORT [+]
New York Greek American Atlas (USASA) 1:2 Richmond Kickers (USL Pro)
The Richmond Kickers overcame an hours-long lightning delay, as well as a first-half deficit, to defeat four-time US Open Cup champion New York Greek American Atlas 2-1. Chris Megaloudis put the Greek Americans on top in the 21st minute, but George Davis IV answered back for the Kickers in the 48th. William Yomby scored the game-winner in the 81st, sending Richmond to the Fourth Round, where it will host the New England Revolution. MATCH REPORT [+]
RWB Adria (USASA) 2:3 (AET) Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL Pro)
RWB Adria took its professional opposition to two overtimes, but Jhonny Arteaga’s strike ended the hopes of an upset for the two-time Open Cup semifinalists. Adria netted twice after Pittsburgh opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Down 2-1, the Riverhounds equalized in the 80th off the right foot of Collins John. With the victory, the USL Pro side notched multiple victories in a single tournament for only the second time in club history. They face the Chicago Fire in the next round. MATCH REPORT [+]
Charlotte Eagles (USL Pro) 0:2 Carolina RailHawks (NASL)
In Round Three’s first match-up of professional teams, it was second-division Carolina RailHawks emerging victorious over third-division Charlotte Eagles. Nazmi Albadawi and Jun Marques Davidson gave Carolina an insurmountable lead in the first half, and Kupono Low made his 200th appearance for the RailHawks. Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL) 5:0 Chattanooga FC (NPSL)
The Atlanta Silverbacks crushed Chattanooga FC in front of the biggest-ever crowd in Tennessee for an Open Cup game. A crowd of 4,058 wasn’t enough to propel the amateur side past its professional foes as the Silverbacks scored three times before the halftime whistle and added two more after the break. Orlando City U23s prevailed over the Charleston Battery in the longest penalty kick shootout in the Modern Pro Era. Lucas Diniz scored Orlando’s 12th and game-winning penalty kick in the record 14-round shootout. The U23s were up 2-0 at the half, but Charleston got goals in the 63rd and 68th minute to make the game all-square. Orlando City U23s travel to face the Portland Timbers in Round Four. Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) 1:4 Orlando City SC (USL Pro)
Future MLS side Orlando City SC cruised past the Tampa Bay Rowdies for the second time this season to secure a place in the Fourth Round and a match with the Colorado Rapids. All the goals were scored in the first half in Orlando’s 4-1 victory. Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) 0:2 New York Cosmos (NASL)
In a match rich with history, the New York Cosmos won their first-ever US Open Cup match against two-time champions Brooklyn Italians. While the Cosmos trace their heritage back to the Cosmos of the original NASL, that league did not allow its teams to compete in the Open Cup. Jimmy Ockford scored in the 16th minute, Hagop Chirishian scored in the 29th, and Brooklyn finished with nine men in a comfortable game for the NASL side. Dayton Dutch Lions (USL Pro) 2:5 Indy Eleven (NASL)
Blake Smith’s hat trick propelled Indy Eleven past Dayton Dutch Lions 5-2 in Indy’s first Open Cup game. Smith opened the scoring in the 26th minute, put Indy up 2-0 in the 30th, and made it 5-2 in the 88th. Dayton made a game of it, scoring two goals after going down 4-0, but it wasn’t enough. Laredo Heat (PDL) 3:2 Ft. Lauderdale Strikers (NASL)
On the final play of the game, Esteban Bayona converted a penalty kick to edge the Laredo Heat past the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. The 3-2 Laredo victory was the biggest upset of the night, as the Heat were the only amateur team to defeat a second-division club. The Strikers sprinted out to a 2-0 lead 12 minutes in, but their goalie took a red card in the 20th minute. Laredo chipped away, netting goals in the 27th and 86th minute. North Texas Rayados (USASA) 2:4 San Antonio Scorpions (NASL)
The San Antonio Scorpions came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat the North Texas Rayados 4-2 in the Third Round. The Rayados scored in the 11th minute, then San Antonio scored an own goal six minutes later. It was a different second half however, as the Scorpions got two goals each from Josue Soto and Sainey Touray to earn the victory. FC Dallas is the foe for San Antonio in the next round. Minnesota United FC (NASL) 1:0 Des Moines Menace (USASA)
One goal was all it took for Minnesota United FC to earn a ticket to Round Four, where it will face MLS champion Sporting Kansas City. Chris Ramirez finally broke the deadlock in the 86th minute. Actually a PDL club, the Des Moines Menace qualified this year out of USASA. Des Moines got its first Open Cup victory as a USASA side in the Second Round against the Real Colorado Foxes. OKC Energy FC (USL Pro) 1:2 (AET) Arizona United SC (USL Pro)
Two USL Pro expansion teams battled it out with Arizona United SC prevailing 2-1 in extra time. Bradlee Baladez put Arizona ahead in the 112th minute, and the United goalkeeper saved a penalty kick in the 118th. Both teams finished with 10 men. Arizona opened the scoring in minute 84, but Oklahoma equalized in stoppage time. United will host the Los Angeles Galaxy in the Fourth Round. MATCH REPORT [+]
Fresno Fuego (PDL) 0:6 Sacramento Republic (USL Pro)
Sacramento Republic crushed short-handed Fresno Fuego 6-0 to move on to Round Four and a date with the San Jose Earthquakes. Fresno kept close until going a man down in the 41st minute. The floodgates opened, and Sacramento scored once in first half stoppage time, then five more times in the second half to cruise to victory. PSA Elite became the third amateur team in this year’s tournament to make the Fourth Round, earning 3-1 penalty kick victory over LA Galaxy II after a scoreless draw. LA had its chances, including a Travis Bowen penalty kick that was saved by PSA in the 81st minute. With the victory, PSA Elite advance to take on three-time Open Cup champions Seattle Sounders.
