The Austin Aztex won their first US Open Cup match as a USL First Division club with a 2-0 win over the Mississippi Brilla, a third year Premier Development League (PDL) team making thier first appearance in the tournament. Last year, the Austin Aztex U23s qualified for the Open Cup as a PDL side, but this was the inaugural season for Austin’s USL-1 franchise.
Jeff Harwell gave Austin a 1-0 lead after 18 minutes, off a low cross from Zack Pope. Eddie Johnson — the Englishman who spent time in the Manchester United youth academy — added some cushion to the Aztex lead in the second half after Harwell directed a loose ball to Johnson in the 64th minute.
Austin will host another PDL club next Tuesday, the El Paso Patriots, in the Second Round.
