The US Soccer Federation conducted the draw for Round 3 of the 2014 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, as the 101st edition of the tournament adds all eight of the US-based NASL (Division II pro) teams.
The Third Round, which will take place on May 28, will see the NASL teams join the 24 Round 2 winners to decide which clubs will earn a date with Major League Soccer. All US-based MLS clubs enter the tournament in Round 4 as a result of this year’s record number of partcipating teams (80).
The procedure to host an Open Cup game will remain in place as they have for the last few years. If a team wants to host, they submit an application to the federation and if that venue meets the minimum standards, then that team will be a part of a coin flip to determine who hosts. If one team does not meet the standards, or just doesn’t apply, then the other team receives the rights to host.
The draw was held at the US Soccer headquarters in Chicago with Indy Eleven president Peter Wilt in attendance to witness the proceedings. Also attending the draw was Chicago Fire writer Jeff Crandall, who last year, introduced Open Cup fans across the country to the federation’s procedure when it comes to the tournament’s draw. He has returned with another installment, as he explains which teams did not apply to host third round games, which teams didn’t meet the fed’s venue standards and how it all went down.
