2013 US Open Cup Second Round: Fort Lauderdale survives scare from 10-man Laredo, advance via penalties
It wasn’t as easy as they had hoped, but the second-tier NASL Fort Lauderdale Strikers advanced 7-6 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw against amateur PDL Laredo Heat in a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match at Lockhart Stadium on Tuesday.
The Laredo Heat advanced to the second round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup for the second consecutive year, downing California amateur club PSA Elite 2-0 Tuesday night at Texas A&M International University.
A dozen clubs are making a return appearance in the event, including 10 that were in the tournament this past year. Four sides will be making their US Open Cup debuts in 2013.

The San Antonio Scorpions played in their first ever US Open Cup game against the Laredo Heat of the PDL in the Second Round of the 2012 edition, and they won 2-0 to advance to face the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer.
In a showdown of two Texas clubs, powerhouses in their leagues, familiar with one another through player movement, it was no surprise that it came down to overtime to decide the outcome. The Laredo Heat prevailed, 4-2 in extra time, over a valiant ASC New Stars side that fought well after being reduced to 10 men.
