Santa Ana Winds FC withstood a dynamic, rapid and vertical Outbreak Soccer Club, that got on the board early and forced the Winds FC backline to struggle to clear the ball. Outbreak, who has qualified for the last two Open Cup tournaments, was the better side for the first 10 minutes of the match. But true to their form, Winds FC gradually settled in and controlled the pace of the match, knocking the ball around comfortably and keeping possession. The final 5-2 score was reflective of the gradual wearing down of the quick-paced Outbreak SC, that found themselves chasing the ball on defense.

Outbreak opened the scoring in the 4th minute on a goal by Juan Meza, on a play that saw a through ball beat the Winds FC defense. Santa Ana got even in the 14th minute on corner kick headed into the net. The match remained intense and deadlocked into halftime, 1-1.

Winds FC opened up the second half pressuring in attack, creating chances and getting shots on goal. It looked like a matter of time before they’d go ahead, and that they did in the 54th minute on a shot on goal by striker Kramer Runager. Santa Ana looked like the side in control until Outbreak broke through only three minutes later to tie things up at 2 on another vertical play, beating the Winds defense combining an assist by Torrey Edwards and a finish by Gerson Blanco.

Santa Ana responded in the 65th minute on a cross from the left flank into the box that was knocked in nearly at the goal line to go ahead 3-2. Winds FC ran away with the match from that point on, scoring in the 69th on another cross from the left, assisted by midfielder Kyle O’Brien, finished by Runager to get his second of the night.

The final goal of the night came in the 90th minute on a diagonal assist from inside the right side of the box, combining right back Juan Fuente and left winger Juan “Johnny” Arellano.

Santa Ana Winds first attempted to qualify for the US Open Cup in 2011, but fell just short. They would not return to qualifying until last year when they would fall to La Maquina in the final round. With the win over Outbreak, they advance to Round 2 where they will host newcomers Newcastle United FC.
