The 1993 US Open Cup champions El Farolito embarked on anther qualifying campaign, in an attempt to reach the US Open Cup for the second consecutive year. The historic San Francisco Soccer Football League club traveled to the East Bay to face the new UPSL club from San Ramon, Calif., Dynamos FC in the first round of the open division qualifying tournament.
El Farolito dominated much of the match as the team’s main striker Carlos Montes led the way with a hat trick. The game finished with El Farolito advancing to the second round of qualifying with a 3-0 victory at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon.
The score line could have been much worse for the Dynamos had it not been for the stellar play of their keeper Martin De La Torre, who came up with multiple huge saves to keep his team in the match for as long as possible.
El Farolito came storming out of the gates with several chances inside the first ten minutes. The best of which came off a cross that found Carlos Montes, who had his shot saved at point blank range from Dynamos keeper De La Torre in the 7th minute of play. Then again in the 14th minute El Farolito’s Angel Partida and Carlos Montes played a nice one-two that forced De La Torre into his second big save of the match.
Finally, in the 16th , El Farolito was able to make the breakthrough, when a cross from Arnhold Rivas found Carlos Montes who was able to beat the Dyanmos’ goalie, this time to give his side the 1-0 lead.
Minutes later, Carlos Montes would be looking for his second of the match as he saw De La Torre off his line from more than 40 yards out in the 20 th minute. The shot was inch perfect, but so was save from De La Torre who had to scramble back to keep his side in the match.
The attacking core of El Farolito including Gustavo Ruelas, Ederson De Silva along with Montes and Partida, caused havoc to the Dynamos’ defense for the rest of the first half, but they were unable to find a second before the break as the half finished 1-0.
The start of the second half saw Dynmaos FC create their first real chance of the match in the 48 th minute when Dominic Hertz missed his effort in the box just wide.
El Farolito took back the control of the match after that Dynamos effort and began to push for their second goal. This push saw Marco Lubel rattle the cross bar from outside the box in the 59th minute.
Seconds after that, El Farolito would find their second as Carlos Montes slotted home his brace from the right side at the near post to make the score line 2-0 in their favor.
The Dynamos did not quit after this as Tony Jimenez forced the first save out of El Farolito keeper Mario Martinez in the 68 th minute that preserved his sides 2-0 advantage.
Carlos Montes would seal the match, however, for El Farolito when he finished off his hat trick in the 73 rd minute effectively ending the match and sending his side into the next round of qualifying.
Dynamos keeper De La Torre would come up with a few more nice saves to keep the match from getting out of hand late as the game ended with a score line of 3-0 in favor of El Farolito.
