The 2010 USASA Region I Tournament will be the largest in professional era history. It will feature 16 teams from eight different state associations as well as the National Premier Soccer League. The tournament begins on April 11, and the winners from semifinal action on May 23 will qualify for the 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Freedoms general manager George Halkidis made good on that promise as the Freedoms dispatched Fenerbahce 4-1 to continue their dominance over Eastern NY. For New York, it was their third straight Open Cup title and their fourth in the last five years.

Despite playing in a torrential downpour throughout the match, Phoenix SC captured their first Eastern Pennsylvania Open Cup championship, defeating the United German Hungarians (UGH) 2-1 in overtime. Kamara Freebolle scored the equalizer and Jack Pocorobba put home the game-winner to put the club one step closer to qualifying for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

A total of 76 clubs took part in the first Open Cup tournament in 1914, a majority of whom came from the Northeast region of the country.
In 2008, the Seattle Sounders became the first club in the Professional Era to advance to the Semifinals in consecutive seasons after beginning play in the First Round.
